September 29, 1898 - Mr. J.W. Jewell, of Berkley, who was employed in the shipwrights' department at the Navy yard, died yesterday morning of heart failure. Mr. Jewell was engaged in helping to shift a camel from one side e of the ship to the other. This necessitated towing the camel around the bow of the ship by means of a long hawser. A number of men on the wharf were doing the towing and Mr. Jewell, was on the camel to breast it off from the ship. As the float came in sight around the bow of the ship it was seen that Jewell was lying on it's deck. He was unconscious. As quickly as possible Mr. Jewell was carried to the yard dispensary, where the doctor in charge said he had something the matter with his heart. He died before anything could be done for his relief. Mr. Jewell was the father-in-law of Mr. John E. McDonald, of this city.

September 29, 1898 - The funeral of IRWIN, the little son of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. ROWAN, took place at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon from the residence of its grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. GASKINS. The Rev. R. B. Eggleston officiated. The interment was in Oak Grove.

September 30, 1898 - On the 28th of September, 1898, at 10:30 p.m. Mr. HIRAM WESLEY BARRETT, aged 45 years and 9 months. The funeral services will take place at Fourth Street Baptist Church this 9Friday) afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend.

September 30, 1898 -In this city, at the residence, No 38 Virginia street, Thursday, September 29th, 1898, at 7:303 o'clock a.m., MICHAEL J. HATTON, aged 53 years. The funeral will take place from St.. Mary's Catholic Church Saturday morning at 9 o'clock. Requiem mass. Rriends are invited to attend.

October 5, 1898 - At her residence, Lawrence avenue, Lambert's Point, Tuesday, September 4th,1898, at 11 o'clock a.m., MATTIE A. [LAMBETH] beloved wife of Charles H. Lambeth, in the 25th year of her age. The funeral will take place from the Zion's M.E. Church this [Wednesday] afternoon at 2 o'clock. Friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend.

October 5, 1898 - At the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. A. M.Osborne, 106 Cooke avenue, Tuesday morning at 4 o'clock. MARY V. PLUMMER, widow of the late Joshua Plummer, in the 61st year of her age. The funeral will take place from the residence Wednesday Afternoon October 5th, at 3:30 o'clock. Friends are respectfully invited to attend.

October 13, 1898 - [Portsmouth] Judge C.W.MURDAUGH a prominent member of the Portsmouth Bar, died at 6:30 o'clock last evening at his home at London and Crawford Streets. His death was the result of a paralytic stroke which he sustained on Monday morning. Judge Murdaugh was born in Suffolk, Dec 28, 1828, but since the age of six years has been a resident of this city. His parents were James Murdaugh and Mary Murdaugh, whose maiden name was Riddick.
After receiving his early education in this city Judge Murdaugh entered William and Mary College. He studied law at the University of Virginia, graduating with high honors. He began the practice of law in 1849, and continued until the beginning of the Civil War. He was elected to the Legislature in 1850 or 1851 and served one term. Judge Murdaugh served with distinction in the Confederate Army, and rose to the rank of Captain. While a lieutenant in the Sixty-first Virginia Regiment (Mahone's brigade) he was severely wounded at Chancellorsville. He was subsequently elected to the Legislature by the soldiers and attended the sittings in Richmond during the winter months. For six years Judge Murdaugh occupied the bench of the hustings court, which position he filled with ability. After his retirement from the bench, he formed a co partnership with Capt. R.C. Marshall and was the senior member of the firm at the time of his death.
The deceased was married in 1856 to Miss Eugenia Dickson, of Norfolk, who with eight children, survives him. The children are: Mr. C. W. Murdaugh, Jr.; Mr. John Murdaugh; Mrs. Thomas A. Bain; Mrs. John A. Lejeune; Mrs. Robert M. Kennedy; Miss Marion Murdaugh, Miss Georgie Murdaugh, Mr. Joe Murdaugh. Judge Murdaugh was a member of the Royal Areanum, K.of P., including the endowment rank, the Knights of Honor and Portsmouth Lodge B.P.O.E. He was also a member of Seaboard lodge, No 56, A.F. and A.M.; Mount Horeb Royal Arch, Chapeter 11 and Portsmouth Commandery, Knights Templar of which he is past eminent commander. The members of the bar of Portsmouth, Norfolk and vicinity will meet in the husting courtroom at 11 o'clock tomorrow morning to take action upon the death of Judge Murdaugh. The funeral will be conducted from the residence at 3:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon.

October 10, 1898 - Mr. William E. Crandol, aged 39 years, died yesterday afternoon at his home, No 1120 Effingham Street. A widow and four children survive him. The funeral will be held from the residence at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon.

October 10, 1898 - Daniel W. Shacklock died at 11:15 o'clock Saturday night at the home of his aunt, Miss Frances C. Nichols, 909 Washington street, at the age of 48 years. The funeral took place at 3 o'clock this afternoon from the residence, the Rev. Dr. Ray officiating. The interment was in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

October 10, 1898 - W. H. Howard, Jr., a well-known resident of Norfolk county, died at 7 o'clock this morning at his home, near Deep Creek. Mr. Howard was employed at the Navy yard. On Tuesday last he was sent home in the yard ambulance suffering from an attack of diabetes.. On the following day, however, his condition being apparently much improved, he left on a business trip to Isle of Wight county. While away a second attack came on. Mr Howard returned home last Friday and his condition became steadily worse until the end this morning. Mr Howard leaves a widow and two children. He was a member of the Royal Arcanum and K.of P. lodges of this city and was also an Odd Fellow.

February 10, 1899- BRIAN McGRATH In the Naval Hospital at Portsmouth, N.H. at 8 o'clock Wednesday night, a well known and popular Portsmouth boy, Brian D. McGrath, breathed his last after an illness of about a month. Brian at the time of his death occupied the important and responsible position of chief machinist of the of the U.S.S. Alliance, and his untimely demise terminated a continuous service in the United States Navy of 18 years. Brian D. McGrath possessed a most generous nature; his hand was ever ready to assist, those less fortunate than himself. He was honest and upright in all his dealings with his fellow men, and news of his death was received in this city with unfeigned sorrow. His remains will arrive home tomorrow morning and will be taken to the home of his mother, Mrs. Mary McGrath, No 110 Lincoln street, whence the funeral will take place Sunday. Besides a mother, who deeply feels the heavy hand of affliction which has been placed upon her, he leaves a sister, Mrs. J. Thompson Carr, and four brothers, Messrs. Peter, Thomas, Edward and Michael McGrath. The cause of this young man's death is said to have been wounds received while a member of the crew of the Cushing during the war with Spain.

February 10, 1899 The funeral of Dr. W.T. SUTTON, who departed this life at his home, No 265 Granby street, Tuesday night, was held from the residence at noon yesterday in the presence of a large assemblage. Pickett-Buchanan Camp, and the Norfolk Medical Society were present each in a body. The services, were conducted by Rev. A. S. Lloyd, rector of St. Luke's and Rev. Dr. B. D. Tucker, of St. Paul's Episcopal Churches. The floral tributes were very handsome. The remains were laid to rest in Elmwood Cemetery. Following were the pall-bearers: Dr. H.M. Nash, Dr. Lomax Gwathmey, Paymaster Eldred, U.S.N.; Mr. Charles Wilson, Colonel H. L. Turner,Mr. W. T. Brooke, Colonel A. Nash and Mr. N. Beaman.

February 10, 1899 - The obsequies of Mrs. JANE E. JONES, relict of the late Mr. Jason Jones, whose demise occurred at the residence of Mr. James F. Cherry, No. 317 North Maltby avenue, Wednesday night, were held from Trinity M.E. Church at 2:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The officiating minister was Rev. Lloyd T. Williams, pastor of the church. The interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, of which city the deceased was a former resident.

February 10, 1899 The venerable Mrs. ELIZA A. MOORE died at the Allmand Home of the Cumberland Street M.E. church, No. 199 Fenchurch street, at 4 o'clock yesterday morning at the advanced age of 85 years. The funeral will be held from the home at 3 o'clock this afternoon and will be conducted by Rev. C. W. Pettit.

February 10, 1899 - Mr. MARK BRIGHT, an aged resident, died at his home, at the corner of Corprew and Maltby avenues, early Wednesday morning. His remains were taken to Camden, N.C., yesterday for interment. The deceased had suffered long and seriously with cancer.

MILLEON, William, Fri Jan 2, 1835. Died on Wednesday night, Mr. William Milleon, Auctioneer and Commission merchant of this borough, in the afternoon of the previous day, while attending to his business at the office, he was suddenly attacked by paralysis, which terminated in a few hours in death. Mr. M. was a native of England, resided for some years in Pennsylvania, but for the last thirty years, has been an active and industrious citizen of our borough. The friends and acquaintances of the deceased are requested to attend his funeral this morning at 11 o'clock, from his late residence, corner of Charlotte and Brower streets.

GRAVES, Thomas Armistead. Fri Jan 2, 1835. Died in Portsmouth, on Wed morning last, Master Thomas Armistead Graves, son of Mr. Wm. A. Graves, aged about 8 years. The deceased with some other boys, was upon the Railroad on Saturday the xxx riding upon some of the Dirt Cars, when he fell off and the car passed over him, crushing his leg from the knee down.

McCOLL, Hugh . Died yesterday morning after a short illness (occasioned by wounds, and bruises caused by being dragged through the streets by a young filly running away, while leading her to water, to which he had so securely bound his wrist that he was unable to extricate himself.). Mr. Hugh McColl a native of Scotland, but for the last four or five years, a grocer of this borough, aged about 50 years. His friends and acquaintances are requested to attend his funeral from his late residence on Union St., this afternoon at 5 o'clock. Monday

SHUSTER, Jacob. Died on Saturday last at his farm on Tanner's Creek, Capt. Jacob Shuster. He was for many years a respectable shipmaster of this port, but had been engaged for some time previous to his death in agricultural pursuits. He was exact in his dealings and blameless in his walks before men. For some years past he had been a zealous member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was about 50 yrs. of age. His friends and acquaintances are requested to attend his funeral, this morning at 11 o'clock from his late residence. Williamson, Wilson, to James, Miss Ann, Married on Tuesday night last by the Re. Mr. Smith. Both of this borough.
