GARLAND D. CARTER

Garland D. Carter, 51, of Martinsville, died Saturday, June 26, 2010, at his home.

Born in Martinsville on July 6, 1958, he was a son of Larkin D. Carter of Bassett and Jeanette O'Dell Reynolds of Bassett. He was preceded in death by grandparents William M. O'Dell and Vergie L. O'Dell and Arnetter E. Carter and Charles Rosco Carter.

He attended County Line Church of God of Prophecy and was in the U.S. Army.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are one son, William Calvin "Billy" Branch of Patrick Springs; two daughters, Annah Victoria "Tori" Carter of North Carolina and Kelly Nichole Carter of Collinsville; two grandchildren; one brother, Randy Carter of Bassett; and one sister, Angela McCloy of Martinsville.

The funeral service was held Tuesday at County Line Church of God of Prophecy with Pastor Freddie Bonds officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with military honors conducted by the Martinsville and Henry County Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to the County Line Church of God of Prophecy, 73 Elf Trail, Bassett, VA 24055.

Arrangements were by Bassett Funeral Service in Bassett.

JUDY M. DAVIS

Judy Martin Davis, 63, of Ridgeway, died Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.

She was born April 16, 1947 in Henry County and was a daughter of the late John Calvin Martin and Rose Lee Hopkins Martin. She was also preceded in death by her son John Allen "Johnny" Martin on June 6; her husband, Alex Davis; a daughter, Casey Dawn Davis; a stepdaughter, Connie Marie Davis Catron; and a stepson, Ricky Davis.

Surviving are one sister, Brenda M. Pendleton of Preston; two brothers, Jimmy C. Martin of Oak Level and Lloyd Barker of Patrick Springs; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and stepgrandchildren.

The funeral was held Thursday at Community Funeral Services in Ridgeway. Pastor Terry Knighten officiated. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.

Pallbearers were Talmadge Martin, Jim Barbour, Mike Shough, Kenny Barker, Dwayne Barker, John Turner and Gary Lee Hall.

CHERYL S. FLORENCE

Cheryl Strader Florence, 51, of Axton, died Friday, June 25, 2010, at her home.

She was born in Martinsville on July 28,1958 and was a daughter of the late Luther James Strader and Doris Campbell Maddox.

She was a nursing assistant for a home health care provider, and was a member of Horsepasture Christian Church.

Surviving are her husband, James Thomas Florence of Martinsville; two daughters, Whitney Strader of Augusta, Ga., and Fantasia Williams of Martinsville; two sons, Antwon Strader of Augusta and Joshua Williams of Martinsville; four sisters, Bonnie Davis of Spencer, Janice Price of Roanoke and Shawn Ryan and Joni Cassell, both of Axton; and one brother, Martin Strader of Woolwine.

Funeral services were conducted Monday at Horsepasture Christian Church by Pastor Dave Cuthbertson. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were William Ryan, L.W. Brown, Guy DeShazo, Frankie Mullins, Rodney Joyce, Mike Joyce and Joshua Williams.

Memorial contributions may be made to Horsepasture Christian Church, 1146 Horsepasture-Price Road, Ridgeway, Va. 24148.

Arrangements were by Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Homes, Martinsville.

BETTY K. FULCHER

Betty Koger Fulcher, 88, of Fieldale, died Thursday, June 24, 2010, at the Landmark Center in Stuart

She was born in Patrick County on July 30, 1921 and was a daughter of the late Lemuel and Carrie Joyce Koger. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Akers G. "Cowboy" Fulcher; a son, Michael G. Fulcher; three sisters, Nannie Sue Miller, Ruby Layman and Pauline Arnold; and five brothers, Alvin, Wade, Hughes and Arthur Koger and an infant brother, Milton Koger.

She graduated from Fieldale High School in 1938 and attended Pleasant Grove Christian Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Lisa Fulcher Hubbard of Martinsville and Betsy Fulcher Gwaltney of Raleigh, N.C.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Homes, Bassett Chapel by Minister Lawrence Harris. Burial was in Old Center Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Cecil Cornett, Charlie Fulcher, Mike Smith, Mack Arnold Jr., Jeff Arnold and Greg Clarke Jr.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fieldale Community Center, P.O. Box 312, Fieldale, Va. 24089.

JOANNE R. KEESEE

Joanne "Jody" Richmond Keesee, age 68, of Stuart, died Monday, June 28, 2010 at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.

She was born in Knoxville, Tenn., on March 12, 1942 to the late James Boyd Richmond and Mary Rose Busseni Richmond.

She was a graduate of the University of Tennessee, College of Dentistry, School of Dental Hygiene, and she practiced as a dental hygienist for 35 years in Patrick County. She was a founding member of Catholic Church of the Risen Lord where she served as treasurer for over 35 years.

Surviving are her husband, Dr. James A. Keesee of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, James M. and Ann Keesee of Chesterfield, John M. and Kim Keesee of Blacksburg, and Jason A. and Jennifer Keesee of Pawley's Island, S.C.; seven grandchildren, Austin, Katherine, Johnathan, Kaitlyn, Christopher, Rion and Ellie Keesee; and two brothers, James Boyd Richmond and Charles Richmond, both of Knoxville.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Catholic Church of the Risen Lord in Patrick Springs with Father Charles Brickner officiating. Burial will follow in Patrick Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Catholic Church of the Risen Lord, c/o St. Joseph's Church, 3579 Carrollton Pike, Woodlawn, VA 24381; or to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 5511 Staples Mill Road, Suite 202B, Richmond, VA 23228.

Moody Funeral Home in Stuart is in charge of the arrangements.

WILLIAM H. MIDKIFF

William Henry Midkiff, 62, of Woolwine, died Sunday, June 27, 2010, at Pioneer Community Hospital.

He was born in Patrick County on October 15, 1947 to the late Joseph Abraham Sr. and Elsie Brammer Midkiff. He was also preceded in death by an infant brother, Donald Edward Midkiff.

He had retired from Virginia Narrow Fabrics and was a member of Jack's Creek Primitive Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy West Midkiff; and two brothers, J.A. Midkiff and wife Linda of Stuart and Conrad Arthur Midkiff of Bassett.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Elder Donnie Conner officiating. Burial was in Woolwine Cemetery.

HELEN F. STOWE

Helen Foley Stowe, 87, of Stuart, died Sunday, June 27, 2010, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.

She was born in Patrick County on June 17, 1923, to the late William Maynard Foley and Bertie Yates Foley. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James E. Stowe.

She had been a member of Stuart Presbyterian Church since 1954 where she served as a Sunday school teacher, youth director and historian. She also was a member of the Women of the Church.

Surviving are her son, James "Jimmy" Stowe and his wife Othelia of Stuart; two grandchildren, Jeryl Stowe and wife Shannon, of Stuart and Jeffrey Stowe of Chesapeake; two great-granddaughters, Madison Grace Stowe and Kaitlyn Faith Stowe; and several cousins.

A graveside service was held Tuesday at Patrick Memorial Gardens with Dr. Bucky Hunsicker and the Rev. Jack Foley officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Stuart Presbyterian Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 944, Stuart, Va. 24171.

Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

VIRGINIA M. WIGINGTON

Virginia McGrady Wigington, 92, of Stuart, died Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.

She was born in Pocahontas, W.Va., on June 2, 1918. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Wigington; two sons, Jeff Wigington and Billy Johnson; her parents; and one brother, George McGrady.

She was retired from J.P. Stevens Rubber Thread where she worked as a secretary.

Surviving are four grandchildren, Monica Gravely, Misty Frans, Jenny Dickinson and Greg Johnson; and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Friday in the Wigington family cemetery on American Legion Road. The Rev. Gerald Melton officiated.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va. 23058-5216.

Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

S. ASHBY CLARK

Shelton "Ashby" Clark, 73, of Dr. Tatum Lane, Stuart, died Thursday, July 29, 2010, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.

He was born in Patrick County on February 11. 1937 to the late Shelton Clark and Marie Tatum Clark. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a twin brother, Tobe Martin Clark.

He was a member of Concord United Methodist Church in Stuart.

He is survived by a special nephew, Christopher Clark of Stuart.

Funeral services were held Sunday at Concord United Methodist Church with Minister Mark Clayton officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were members and friends of the family and church.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the PARC Workshop of Patrick County.

Arrangements were by Community Funeral Service of Ridgeway.

JOHNNIE C. CROTTS

Johnnie C. Crotts, 72, of Vero Beach, Fla., died July 22, 2010, at the Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach.

He was born in Stuart on September 8, 1937, and moved to Vero Beach from Chesapeake 45 years ago.

He owned C.A.R.S. Salvage in Vero Beach for 20 years.

Surviving are one daughter, Teresa Hein of Vero Beach; one brother, Gary Crotts of High Point, N.C.; and one sister, Sylvia Youngblood of Stuart.

A celebration of his life was held July 25.

Memorial contributions may be made to VNA Hospice/Foundation, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, Fla. 32960.

Arrangements were made at Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home and Crematory.
