GARY W. MANNON

Gary Wayne Mannon, 55, of Patrick County and formerly of Bassett, died Sunday, September 5, 2010, at his home.

He was born on August 11, 1955 and was a son of Merle Brickhouse Mannon of Floyd and the late Harvey Mannon Sr. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Ingram; a brother, Harvey Lee Mannon Jr.; and grandparents, Benny and Maggie Brickhouse and Hobart and Gracie Mannon.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are one daughter, Amber Whitlock of Texas; one son, Christopher Wayne Whitlock of Texas; two sisters, Jennifer Post of Florida and Valerie Scott of Bassett; and two brothers, Jimmy Lee Mannon of Patrick County and William Randolph Mannon of Bassett.

A graveside service will be conducted today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. in Henry Memorial Park with Pastor Barney Arthur officiating.

Arrangements are by Bassett Funeral Service.

LOUIS C. MITCHELL

Louis C. Mitchell, 66, of Martinsville, died Friday, September 3, 2010.

He was born in Martinsville on June 17, 1944 and was a son of Irene Wood Mitchell of Ridgeway and the late Simpson J. Mitchell. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Anita Morrison Mitchell.

He worked as a machinist in the Martinsville area for over 40 years and was a lifetime member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Martinsville. He was a member of Patrick Henry Knights of Pythias Lodge.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are one daughter, Tonya Mitchell Donovan and husband David of Richmond; two sisters, Jeanette Mitchell Voggess and husband John of Greenville, Ky., and Becky Mitchell Brown and husband Michael of Spencer.

Memorial services will be held next week at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 824 Starling Ave., Martinsville, Va. 24112.

CECIL R. NEWMAN

Cecil R. Newman, age 84, of Meadows of Dan, died Friday, September 3, 2010, at the V.A. Medical Center in Salem.

Born on April 4, 1926, he was the son of the late Eugene H. and Violet Clifton Newman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Moncella Gray and Violet Paunee Rorrer.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy on the USS Bernadou. He was a member of Conner's View Primitive Baptist Church. He was a distributor in the wholesale egg business for 38 years, and had worked at Haynes Construction for 14 years.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Agnes Stanley Newman of the home; three daughters and their spouses, Phyllis and Tom Botkins of Hot Springs, Maxine and Mike Boaz of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Karen and Richard Wood of Meadows of Dan; five grandsons; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers and their spouses, Garvin and Janice Newman of Florida, Aubrey and Mavis Newman of Daleville, and Elroy and Iva Newman of Lynchburg; and four sisters, Wanetta Doss of Stuart, Betty Jenkins of Ridgeway, Nagatha Wirt of Craig County, and Evelena Dalton and husband Joe of Meadows of Dan.

Funeral services were held Sunday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Elder Edward Bowman and Elroy Newman officiating. Burial was in the Stanley family cemetery at Laurel Fork with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans' Memorial Honor Guard.

Pallbearers were Travis Botkins, Brad Wood, Chad Wood, Shane Boaz, Logan Boaz, Jason Boaz and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to Conner's View Primitive Baptist Church, c/o Oneda Conner, 7005 Belcher Mountain Road, Woolwine, Va. 24185 or to the Stanley Family Cemetery, c/o Karen Wood, 441 Busted Rock Road, Meadows of Dan, Va. 24120.

RICHARD T. SMITH

Richard "Ricky" Timothy Smith, 53, of Bassett, died Thursday, September 1, 2010, at the Veterans Hospital in Salem.

He was born in Bluefield on September 7, 1956, and was a son of the late Steve Richard Smith and Margaret Marrs Smith.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam and worked as a truck driver for Averitt Express in Roanoke until becoming disabled in 2000.

He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Donna Willard Smith of the home; four daughters, Gina Smith Hodge of Martinsville, Tyffani Smith Knott of Collinsville, Dana Jeanne Smith of Bassett and Robin Nicole Farley of Princeton, W.Va.; one son, Richard "Lil' Ricky" Timothy Smith II of Bassett; one brother, Steve Anthony Smith of Stuart; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday at Norris Funeral Services in Martinsville by Butch Mays. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.

Memorials may be made to Wachovia Bank, Richard Smith Memorial, P.O. Box 586, Bassett, Va. 24055.

CARL L. BANKS

Carl Lee Banks, age 72 of Siler City, N.C., died Tuesday, September 27, 2011, at the University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill, N.C.

He was born in Patrick County on January 12, 1939 to the late Elroy William and Vergie Puckett Banks. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Roland Banks; and a sister, Lilly Mae Wheeler.

He had served in the U.S. Army and had been a supervisor at Power Mills in Burlington, N.C. He enjoyed music, played the guitar and harmonica, and loved his family and grandchildren.

Surviving are two sons, Jimmy Lee Banks of Greenville, N.C., and Carl Lee Banks Jr. of Sanford, N.C.; two grandchildren; and two brothers, Eugene Banks of Abingdon and Leroy Banks of Eden, N.C.

A graveside service was held Saturday at Reed Island Springs Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. military rites were conducted by the Patrick County Veterans' Memorial Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Carl Lee Banks Memorial Fund, c/o Moody Funeral Home, Stuart, Va. 24171.

Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

FLORENCE M. BOHANNON

Florence Manring Bohannon, 90, of 5116 NC 8 Hwy. N, Lawsonville, N.C., died Friday, September 30, 2011, at Pioneer Community Hospital of Stokes.

She was born October 2, 1920, in Brunswick County to the late Reid and Bertie Tucker Manring. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Wayne Bohannon; a son, Donald Bohannon; a daughter, Rose Marie Bohannon; and brothers, Arthur and David Manring.

She was retired from Bassett Walker, Inc., was a member of Five Forks Wesleyan Church, and was a member of the Lawsonville Quilters Club.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Bohannon and wife Pat of Stuart and Terry Wayne Martin and wife Jenny of Lawsonville; a daughter-in-law, Jean Bohannon of Walnut Cove, N.C.; one sister, Pauline Robertson of Danbury, N.C.; and five grandchildren.

The funeral service was held Sunday at Colonial Funeral Home Stokes Chapel. Interment was in the Bohannon family cemetery.

LLOYD J. BOWMAN

Lloyd Joseph Bowman, 71, of Cox Ridge Road, Claudville, died Saturday, October 1, 2011, at his home.

He was born April 30, 1940, in Patrick County to the late Hillary and Mattie Willard Bowman. He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Annie Frances Bowman, Opal Allen, Nannie Dawson, and Hazel Bowman; and two brothers, Howard Bowman and William Bowman.

He retired from CMI Industries and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his wife, Bennie Craddock Bowman of the home; two daughters, Lynnette Bowman of the home and Kimberly Felts of Mount Airy, N.C.; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was held Tuesday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Dwayne Sands officiating. Burial was in the Craddock family cemetery.

GARY L. MARTIN

Gary Lee Martin, 63, of Byron, Ga., died Tuesday, September 27, 2011.

He was born December 30, 1947, in Patrick County and served in the Air Force during the Vietname War. He was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Dare.

He lived and worked in Germany for 11 years. In recent years, he lived in Byron and worked as an electronic technician for G&B.

Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Ingrid Martin of Byron; two children, Richie Martin and Terry Torrence, both of Martinsville; his mother, Marie Gibson of Collinsville; one sister, Mary Ann Adams of Ridgeway; one brother, Larry Martin of Glen Allen; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was conducted Saturday at Ekklesia of the Word in Warner Robins, Ga., by Pastor Joe Eyler.

Memorial contributions may be made to Ekklesia of the Word, 1519 Leverett Road, Warner Robins, Ga. 31088.

Local arrangements were by Bassett Funeral Service.

BRUCE W. McKINNEY

Bruce Wayne McKinney, age 53, of Stuart, died Sunday, October 2, 2011, at Duke University Hospital surrounded by those he loved after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on February 12, 1958 in Dayton, Oh., grew up in California and subsequently moved to Stuart in 1981 where he lived every day to the fullest, loved completely, and saw humor in everything.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Delores June Cagle McKinney, and was a member of Fairystone Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Elizabeth Morrison McKinney of Stuart; one son, Eric McKinney of Pennsylvania; one daughter, Jennifer Cox; and a granddaughter; his father, Harry McKinney and his wife Penny of California; one brother, Steve McKinney of Nevada; half-sisters, Dawn Jones and Deanna McKinney, both of California; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Amos and Yolanda Morrison, two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law.

A celebration of his life will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Fairystone Baptist Church with Pastor Clint Conner officiating.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church with burial immediately afterwards in the church cemetery.

Friends and family may also visit the surviving family at 503 Pilson Sawmill Road in Stuart.

If desired, memorial contributions may made to the Smith River Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 122, Woolwine, Va. 24185; or to the Fairystone Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Jane Layman, 105 Chevy Lane, Stuart, Va. 24171.

Moody Funeral Home in Stuart is in charge of the arrangements.

MARSHALL J. NELSON

Marshall James "Mike" Nelson, 89, of Martinsville, died Sunday, September 25, 2011, at his home.

He was born July 2, 1922, in Patrick County and was a son of the late Moir C. and Elsie Corns Nelson. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Barnes Nelson; a sister, Cassie Nelson Smith; and a brother, Akers C. Nelson.

He retired from American Furniture Co., and was a longtime member of Starling Avenue Baptist Church.

Surviving are one brother, Robert L. Nelson of Kernersville, N.C.; and nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was conducted Saturday at Starling Avenue Baptist Church by Dr. David Adkins. Entombment was in Roselawn Abbey.

Pallbearers were Charles Stowe, Eddie Nelson, Hunter Jarrett, Gary Nelson, Mario Mastrangeli and Kenneth Breedlove.

Arrangements were by McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Martinsville.
