NATHAN C. MARTIN

Nathan Clyde Martin, 61, of Stuart, died Wednesday, January 11, 2012, at Pioneer Community Hospital of Stokes County in Danbury, N.C.

He was born in Patrick County on August 19, 1950 and was a son of the late Grover Bishop and Evelyn Dalton Wiggington.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Jeremy Bishop and Kimberly Martin of Newport News; one daughter, Elizabeth Brown of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and one granddaughter Taylor Martin of Newport News.

A memorial service was held Friday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Jim Churchwell officiating. Burial was private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Liver Foundation, 1341 N. Delaware Ave., Suite 209, Philadelphia, Pa. 19125; or to the Cpl. Jonathan W. Bowling Memorial Fund, c/o Patrick County Education Foundation, P.O. Box 497, Stuart, Va. 24171.

PHILLIP D. ROBERTS

Phillip Dean Roberts, 54, of Sandy Ridge, N.C., died Saturday, January 14, 2012, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.

He was born in Henry County and was a son of the late William Guy Roberts and Margaret Elizabeth Woolwine Roberts.

He had served in the U.S. Marines and was a carpenter.

Surviving are two brothers, William Thomas Roberts of Stuart and Robert Leon Roberts of Virginia Beach; four sisters, Loraine Gilles of Lake Luzerne, N.Y., Deborah Rusmisel of Stuart, Patricia Agee of Danville and Rebecca "Becky" Puckett of Meadows of Dan; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Bernard Handy officiating. military rites will be conducted by the Patrick County Veterans' Memorial Honor Guard. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

LESTER R. SMITH

Lester Roosevelt Smith, 93, of Martinsville, died Tuesday, January 10, 2012, at Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden, N.C.

He was born in Patrick County on December 4, 1918 and was a son of the late Walter Herman Smith and the late Mamie Jane Flippin Smith. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Lois Bridges.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was in the Battle of the Bulge. He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of VFW Post #4637 and American Legion Post #11.

Surviving are one daughter, Deborah Smith Vaden of Danbury, N.C.; two grandchildren; and three sisters, Lillie Moore of Kernersville, N.C., Virginia Shively of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Pauline Foley of Bassett.

The funeral was held Saturday at Bassett Funeral Service chapel with the Revs. Jeff Evans and Dan Schelling officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park with military rites by the Martinsville-Henry County Veterans' Honor Guard.

JAMES C. ADAMS

James Conrad "Connie" Adams, age 92, of Stuart, died Saturday, January 28, 2012, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart. He was born on December 17, 1919 in Patrick County and was a son of the late Walter and Duzzie Foley Adams. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Vivian Morrison; and three brothers, Curtis Adams, McCray Adams, and Navy Adams.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received a Purple Heart. He was a member of Sycamore Baptist Church and American Legion Post #105.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Elsie Lawless Adams of the home; one sister-in-law, Roberta H. Adams of Stuart; a special nephew, Albert Morrison; two nephews, Wade and Weldon Morrison; and four nieces, Carolyn Gravely, Linda East, Betty Garcia, and Nora Perkins.

Funeral services were held Monday at Sycamore Baptist Church with the Rev. Gerald Melton officiating. Burial, with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans' Memorial Honor Guard, was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Wade Morrison, Weldon Morrison, Albert Morrison, Junior Mabe, Tony Perkins, Alfred Gravely and Frank Garcia.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sycamore Baptist Church c/o Nancy Midkiff, 171 Sycamore Church Lane, Stuart, VA 24171. Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

LOIS N. BOWMAN

Lois "Ergie" Nunn Bowman, age 90, of Claudville, died Monday, January 30, 2012 at Blue Ridge Nursing Center. She was born in Patrick County on October 20, 1921 and was a daughter of the late Abe and Layla Smart Nunn. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Pate Eugene Bowman a daughter, Judith Ann Bowman; a son, Buddy Ray Bowman and two grandchildren.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother and a devoted member of the Church of Christ Stuart. Surviving are one daughter and sons-in-law, Beatrice and Trenton Spence and Philip Anderson; sons and daughters-in-law, R.C. and Bonnie Bowman, Johnny Bowman and Rita Bowman, all of Claudville; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; one sister, Zelma Doss of Claudville; and special friends, David Truitt and Rachel Love.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Church of Christ in Stuart by the Rev. James Percival and Aaron Blackard. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, N.C.

MARIE F. CLARKE

Marie Foster Clarke, 87, of Brandon Oaks Nursing and Rehab Center in Roanoke and formerly of Martinsville, died Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at the center. She was born July 19, 1924 in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late Larkin Benjamin and Myra Anthony Foster. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Nathan Clay Clarke, in 1995; two brothers, Woodrow Foster and Conrad Foster; and a sister, Virginia Plaster.

She graduated from Hardin Reynolds High School, attended Perry Business College and retired from DuPont with more than 30 years of service. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Linda Livengood of Roanoke; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Friday at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Sarah Whitmore officiating. Inurnment was in Roselawn Burial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 146 E. Church St., Martinsville, Va. 24112.

PAUL L. GALIS

Paul Lemoine Galis, age 70, of Claudville, died Tuesday, January 24, 2012. He was born in Fairview, W.Va., on April 12, 1941 to the late Alexander and Eloise Luton Galis.

He was retired from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Surviving are his wife, Linda Tucker Galis; one son, Paul A. Galis of Silver Spring, Md.; two daughters, Ottie Lynn Galis Rust of Gainesville and Pamela Galis Kershes of Ashburn; one stepson, Christopher R. Boyer of Meadows of Dan; three grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and two brothers, John Galis of Morgantown, W.Va., and James Galis of Bremen, Ga.

A memorial service was held Saturday at Hastings Funeral Home in Morgantown, W.Va. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation, 5511 Staples Mill Road, Suite 202B, Richmond, Va. 23228.

Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

CHARLES C. HALL

Charles Coy Hall, age 74, of Stuart, died Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at his home. He was born in Patrick County on December 23, 1937 and was a son of the late Henry and Eunice H. Hall. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Lucy H. Fain and Annie H. Turner; and two brothers, Woodrow and Frank Hall.

He had worked for over 40 years for Mitchell Howell Ford and Nelson Automotive as a salesman, and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Mary Lou Collins Hall of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Patricia Hall and Michael and Missy Hall, all of Stuart; four grandchildren, Samantha Joyce and husband Brandon of Lawsonville, N.C.; Nikki Handy and husband Jason of Stuart, Allison Hall and Dillon Hall of Stuart; three great-grandchildren, Kylee Joyce, Ben Joyce and Jaxon Handy; one brother, Cecil Hall of Martinsville; a sister-in-law, Ella M. Hall of Stuart; a brother-in-law, J.D. Collins and wife Joan of Collinsville; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held Friday at Mayo Mountain Baptist Church cemetery with the Revs. Bernard Handy and Jim Churchwell officiating. Pallbearers were Alan Hall, Larry Hall, Ronnie Hall, Lorin Hall, Tommy Wells, Harry Hairston, Tim Jones and Danny Boles. Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 22099 Jeb Stuart Hwy., Stuart, Va. 24171.

EMORY R. HUGHES

Emory Ronald "Snookie" Hughes, 74, of 538 Via's Orchard Road, Critz, died Monday, January 30, 2012, at Pioneer Community Hospital in Stuart. He was born on July 20, 1937 in Westfield, N.C., to the late Otis Hughes and Margaret Duncan Hughes. He was also preceded in death by two daughters, Melissa Glenn and Susan Glenn; and three brothers, Jon Glenn Hughes, Allen Hughes and Tommy Hughes.

He was a member of Tatum Macedonia Primitive Church in Patrick Springs.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Hughes of the home; one daughter, Felicia Becerril of Stuart; one son, Steven Glenn of Patrick Springs; four sisters, Margie Bohannon of Martinsville, Geraldine Rucker of Stuart, and Earlene Hughes and Verlene Hughes, both of Westfield; three brothers, Clyde Hughes and Hensey Hughes both of Westfield, and Alfonso Hughes of Stuart; five grandchildren and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Norris Funeral Services Stuart chapel with Elder Manuel Jessup officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 1 to 2 p.m., at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by Norris Funeral Services, Inc. and Crematory in Stuart.

CHARLES L. MABE

Charles Lee Mabe, 36, of Ararat, died at his home Tuesday, January 24, 2012. He was born in Surry County, N.C., on August 24, 1975 to Yvonne Smith Mabe and the late Rayford Randolph Mabe.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are one sister, Tammy Mabe of Ararat; one brother, Danny Ray Mabe of Mount Airy, N.C.; one nephew and two nieces.

A graveside service was held Friday at Willis Gap Baptist Church.

Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.

RUSSELL H. MEYER

Russell Hamilton Meyer, age 54, of Stuart, died Monday January 30, 2011, at Pioneer Community Hospital of Patrick County. He was born in Evansville, Ind., on June 19, 1957 to Russell Meyer and the late Barbara Grant Meyer.

He served his country as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Surviving are two daughters, Ferida Michelle Cralle of Stafford, and Lara Danielle Meyer, who is serving in Afghanistan; his father and stepmother, Dr. Russell Meyer, Capt. USN Ret., and wife Donna of Stuart; one sister, Manya Meyer of Vineland, N.J.; two brothers, Harrison Meyer of Virginia Beach and Jesse Meyer of Suffolk; one stepbrother, Allen Touchstone of Ft. Benning, Ga., and a stepsister, Aubree Touchstone of Stuart.

A time of visitation will be held on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart. The Patrick County Veterans' Memorial Honor Guard will hold a flag presentation program at 6:30 p.m. Saturday evening.

ELVERA L. MITAN

Elvera "Sid" Lind Mitan, age 94, of Stuart, died Saturday, January 28, 2012 at the Landmark Center in Stuart. She was born in Litchfield, Ill. on November 20, 1917 to the late Asa and Emma Samples Hearlston. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Harry J. Lind; her second husband, Edward F. Mitan; a son, John H. Lind; a granddaughter, Heather Lind Patterson; a sister, Faye Young; and a brother, Ace Hearlston.

She was a member of Grace Baptist Church, and had been a school bus driver with the Illinois public school system.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Jeffery and Annetta Lind of Stuart; two daughters, Judith Varnadore of Shalimar, Fla., and Janice Thompson and husband Dennis of New Berlin, Wisc.; five grandsons, Jeffery J. Lind Jr. and wife Moira of Lindenhurst, Ill., Corey E. Lind of Martinsville, D.J. Thompson of Milwaukee, Wisc., Rickie Varnadore and Jimmy Varnadore, both of Shalimar; three granddaughters, Jennifer Zirbel and husband Matt of Milwaukee, and Debra Varnadore and Kristine Varnadore, both of Shalimar; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church with Pastor Ted Thisse and the Rev. Jim Churchwell officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1108, Stuart, Virginia 24171. Moody Funeral Home in Stuart is in charge of the arrangements.

SHERRY L. OWENS

Sherry Lynn Owens, 44, of Unity Church Road, Ararat, died on Wednesday, January 25, 2012, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. She was born March 22, 1967, in Patrick County, and was a daughter of Glenda Smith Owens and the late Bernie Owens. She was also preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Preston Smith; her paternal grandfather, Woodrow Owens; and a special aunt, Debbie Fain.

She was a member of Unity Church.

Surviving are her mother, Glenda Smith Owens of the home; one sister, Candy Burkhart of Ararat; two brothers, Dale Owens of Stuart and Brian Owens of Ararat; three nieces; two nephews, Austin Burkhart and Jason Owens; two great nieces; her maternal grandmother, Louise Smith of Ararat; her paternal grandmother, Mary Eliza Owens of Westfield, N.C.; several aunts and uncles; her church family and special friends and family.

The funeral service was held Saturday at Unity Church, with the Rev. Buford Jessup officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Unity Church, c/o Linda Mitchell, 57 Dan Valley Farm Road, Claudville, VA 24076. Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy.
