QUENTIN A. REDD

Baby Quentin Alan Redd, age 1, passed away Thursday, April 26, 2012, at Brenner Children's Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.

He was born on April 15, 2011 in Winston-Salem.

Quentin is survived by his parents, Christopher and Nichole "Nikki" Gilley Redd of Stuart; his sister, Kayla Redd of the home; his grandparents, Rick and Denise Gilley of Henry and Mary Lou Redd of Stuart; great-grandparents, Curtis and Lena Young, Junior Gilley, Billy Joe and Marlene Meadows; and several aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Henry Boley Redd, his maternal grandmother, Diane Gilley, and his maternal great-grandmother, Helen Gilley.

Quentin was a true blessing, not only to his family but to everyone. He brought us all together as a family, church family, and community, and brought us closer to God. Quentin's spirit was one of a true fighter. He fought a courageous fight, overcoming many challenges until he earned his wings. Fly, baby fly!

Funeral services were held Sunday at Five Forks Wesleyan Church with Pastor Mike Hatfield officiating. Burial was in Patrick Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were his uncles, Nelson Redd and Bryant Redd.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem, 419 S. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103.

Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Stuart.

HARDY S. CAMPBELL

Hardy Shelburne Campbell, 90, of Ziglar Road, Ridgeway, died Monday, January 14, 2013, at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro, N.C.He was born in Patrick County on December 26, 1922 and was a son of the late Thomas Jefferson Campbell and Clarice Mabel Martin Campbell. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Betsy Gray Campbell; three sisters, Pauline C. Josefson, Doris C. Maddox and Jeanette C. Joyce; and three brothers, Thomas W. Campbell, Jamie F. Campbell and Wayne H. Campbell.

He graduated from Spencer-Penn High School and served in the Navy during World War II where he took part in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy. He retired from Campbell Transmission Service where he was owner/operator for over 30 years. Hardy was a member of the Dixie Racing Circuit and the Virginia-Carolina Early Dirt Racers Association. He was a member of Horsepasture Christian Church and also a member of the choir for many years.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Alpha Freeman Campbell of the residence; one son, Joseph B. (Joey) Campbell of Ridgeway; two grandchildren; one sister, Glenda C. Mays of Ridgeway; and two brothers, Ernest M. Campbell of Ridgeway and Connie D. Campbell of Martinsville.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Horsepasture Christian Church with ministers David Cuthbertson and Robert Ashby officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors by the Martinsville-Henry Veterans' Honor Guard. The family will receive friends tonight (Wednesday) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Horsepasture Christian Church and other times at the residence.

Memorial contributions may be made to Horsepasture Christian Church Mission's Fund, 1146 Horsepasture-Price Road, Ridgeway, VA 24148. Arrangements are by McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Martinsville.

MAYE W. DIESEL

Maye H. Wherry Diesel, age 93, of Stuart, died Thursday, January 10, 2013, at the Landmark Center in Stuart.She was born in New York on May 24, 1919 and was a daughter of the late John and Mae Webster Wherry. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edward John Diesel; a son, Edward Diesel Jr.; and a brother, John "Jack" Wherry.

Surviving are one daughter, Mary Schnitzer of Annapolis, Md.; four sons, Donald Diesel of Elmira, N.Y., David Diesel of Binghamton, N.Y.; Robert Diesel and wife Adah of Stuart and Raymond Diesel of Raleigh, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Mary Alice Wherry of Florida.

A service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Our Mother Catholic Church in Horseheads, N.Y. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery in Horseheads.Moody Funeral Home in Stuart is handling the local arrangements.

JULIANA T. DOSS

Juliana Tucker Doss, 76, of NC 8 Hwy. N, Lawsonville, N.C., passed away, Friday, January 11, 2013, at Pioneer Community Hospital of Stokes County. She was born on September 23, 1936, in Stokes County, N.C., to the late Harry and Wilmer Moore Tucker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Akers Doss.

She attended Snow Creek Primitive Baptist Church and Peters Creek Baptist Church. She retired from Patrick Springs School after 33 years of teaching fifth and seventh grades (1958-1991) and serving as school librarian for many years. She was also a member of the Patrick Springs School PTA and had been a member of the Patrick County Retired Teachers Association since 1991. She was a charter member and past president of Beta Rho chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International Educators Society. Also, she was a member of the Lawsonville Ruritan Club, the Lawsonville Extension Club, and the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Lawsonville Volunteer Fire Department. She along with her husband, Akers Doss, organized and led the Lawsonville Clovers 4-H Club.

Survivors include one sister, Waynona Sands and husband Gene; brothers and sisters-in-law, Sam and Doris Hawkins, Curtis and Mary Lee Doss, and Charlie Francis; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held Sunday, January 13, 2013, at Snow Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery conducted by Beta Rho Educators Society. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Snow Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, c/o Jimmy Tucker, 1997 Sheppard Mill Rd, Danbury, NC 27016. Arrangements were by Colonial Funeral Home Stokes Chapel in Sandy Ridge, N.C.

J. MATTHEW FULCHER

J. Matthew Fulcher, 49, of Bassett, died Saturday, January 12, 2013. He was born in Martinsville on May 13, 1963 and was a son of Nancy K. Fulcher of Patrick Springs and the late James Fulcher.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are one daughter, Amy Nester of Bassett; three grandchildren; two sisters, Faye Rhodes of Bassett and Diana Fulcher Bowden of Stuart; two nieces; and three nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Bassett Funeral Service by Pastor David Keaton. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

DAVID S. GATES

David Stanley Gates, age 57 of Ararat, died suddenly December 21, 2012, at his home. He was born in Newark, N.J. on July 19, 1955 and was raised in Lantana, Fla., then moved to Ararat in 1991. He was a son of the late Davis Lee Gates and Shirley Kelly Rhuda. He was also preceded by a son, Mark Wade Gates.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are one sister, Jody Dixon, three nephews and one niece, all of Gambrills, Md.; and one brother, Dennis Gates and a nephew of Lantana.

A memorial service was held Saturday at the New Beginnings Church in Ararat. Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy, N.C.

DILLARD F. GRAVELY

Dillard Franklin Gravely, 82, of Ramble Road, Collinsville, died Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart. He was born on April 16, 1930, in Henry County and was a son of the late Ben Franklin Gravely and Gracie Richardson Gravely. He was preceded in death by a son, Bruce Allen Gravely. He worked for 41 years for American Electric Power before retiring as a supervisor, was a master gardener and a member of the Martinsville Exchange Club. Gravely was a member of the Smith Memorial United Methodist Church in Collinsville, where he was a member of the Seeker's Sunday School Class and the Methodist Men. He was a past delegate to the Methodist Annual Conference.

Surviving are his wife, Lois Gravely of the home; three daughters, Wynn Gravely Toms of Charlottesville, Heidi Gravely Lanford of Waynesboro and Leah Gravely of Lilburn, Ga.; one son, Dane Matthew Gravely of Bassett; three stepchildren, Gary Dannegger of Snow Shoe, W.Va., Carla Carter of Martinsville and Lori Blankenship of Peru, Ind.; three sisters, Lorene Sundquist of Worcester, Mass., Edith Sanders of Dallas, Texas and Margaret Knight of Martinsville; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Sunday at Norris Funeral Services in Martinsville with Minister Tilden Bridges officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Minter Family Cemetery Fund, c/o Dane Gravely, 1880 Columbus Drive, Bassett, Va. 24055.

WILLIAM R. HARRIS

William R. Harris of Dublin, Ga., went to be with the Lord on January 7, 2013, after a long battle with ALS disease.His last days were spent in the arms of his family in Greenville, S.C. Bill was born on October 25, 1936 in Meadows of Dan. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 until his honorable discharge in 1959. He lived in Dublin for the past 16 years where he worked as a real estate appraiser. He will be remembered for his fighting spirit that was an inspiration to all that met him and his never-ending sense of humor.Bill was the youngest child of the late Matthew O. and Ruth W. Harris.

He is survived by his two devoted daughters who cared for him courageously to the end, Billie Jean Harris Collett and Regina Harris Kaminski; their mother, Jean Plaster Harris; his grandchildren, that he was so proud of, Matthew Collett, Wesley Collett, Haley Kaminski and Nicole Kaminski; and his brothers and sisters, Roxie Bailey and Reba Pruett, both of Bluefield, W.Va., Merle Byrd of Collinsville, Blaine Harris and his wife Wavie of San Antonio, Tex., and Maynard Harris and his wife Jane of Stanardsville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Meadows of Dan Baptist Church on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 11 a.m. There will be a military graveside burial in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Harris requested that a donation be made to his lifelong church, Meadows of Dan Baptist Church, 2511 Jeb Stuart Hwy., Meadows of Dan, Va. 24120.

RUTH W. MARTIN

Ruth Etta Wilson Martin, 87, of Bassett, died Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at the Golden Living Center. She was born in Patrick County on March 17, 1925, and was a daughter of the late Robert Lee and Mary Etta Wilson. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, William A. Martin Sr.; a son, Donald W. Martin; two sisters, Rebecca Wilson and Mabel Agnew; and a brother, James Wilson. She was retired from Fieldcrest Mills and Bassett-Walker Knitting and had been a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Bassett since 1962.

Surviving are two daughters, Patricia M. Wheeler of Martinsville and Yvonne M. Michie of Roanoke; one son, William A. Martin Jr. of North Carolina; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was held Friday at Tabernacle Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby Rakes and Dr. David Towler officiating. Burial was in Henry Memorial Park.

ROBERT H. McKENZIE SR.

Robert Howard McKenzie Sr., 79, of Ft. Pierce, Fla., died Jan. 8, 2013, in Ft. Pierce. He was born in McComas, W.Va., and moved to Ft. Pierce in 1936. He retired as a manager for Canada Dry. He was a member of St. Anastasia Catholic Church and was a past grand knight of the Knights of Columbus.

Surviving are two daughters, Elizabeth Franklin of Ft. Valley, Ga., and Mary Stephens of Pekin, Ind.; one son, Robert McKenzie Jr. of Ft. Pierce; two sisters, Doris Craig of Stuart and Mary Jane Smith of Ft. Pierce; two brothers, Ray McKenzie of Ft. Pierce and Stafford McKenzie of Clemmons, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday at St. Anastasia Catholic Church. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Arrangements were by Haisley Funeral Home, 3015 Okeechobee Road, Fort Pierce.

MARY E. ROBERTS

Mary Elizabeth Roberts, 45, of Coopers Mountain, Martinsville, died Saturday, January 12, 2013 at her home. She was born in Martinsville and was a daughter of Mable Marie Roberts of Martinsville and the late Melvin Ray (Chief) Roberts. She was also preceded in death by her brother Billy Ray Roberts.

Surviving, in addition to her mother, are one daughter, Christy M. Roberts of Martinsville; two brothers, Clift Roberts and David Roberts, both of Martinsville; and three sisters, Gloria Ashby of Henry County, Sally Roberts of Patrick County and Brenda Hundley of Martinsville.

The memorial service was private. Arrangements are by Norris Funeral Services and Crematory.

MARY JANE L. TAYLOR

Mary Jane Liesfeld Taylor, age 61, of Stuart, died Sunday, January 13, 2013, surrounded by her family at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., due to complications of ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. She was born in Richmond on July 30, 1951 and was a daughter of the late Charles Phillip Liesfeld, Sr. and Elnora Bussard Liesfeld. She was also preceded in death by a brother, W. Carey Liesfeld.

She was a parishioner at the Church of the Risen Lord, and had retired from the Patrick County school system with 34 years of service where she was a mathematics and computer science teacher. She was a sponsor of the Senior Beta Club at Patrick County High School for over 20 years and had chaperoned many students at conventions throughout Virginia. Upon her retirement, a scholarship for Beta students was established in her honor. After retirement, she was an ABE/GED Mathematics teacher for the Patrick County Adult Learning Center and had taught at Patrick Henry Community College in Stuart. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and Delta Kappa Gamma, serving as president from 2008 to 2010. She was also involved with the Prayer Shawl Ministry for Hospice and was on the Town of Stuart Planning Commission. She was a member of the Crafter's Guild and attended color pencil art workshops where she had won a merit award from the Jeb Stuart Art Show in 2012. She loved to knit and crochet and shared her talents with many in the community. She was an avid reader and co-founded a local book club that has read over 45 books since 2009. She enjoyed playing Scrabble, Bridge and golf, and also enjoyed her garden and flowers every summer.

Surviving are her husband, Barry D. Taylor of the home; one son, John Phillip Taylor and wife Nicole of Richmond; one daughter, Sarah Taylor Brown and husband Jonathan of Warm Springs; and three brothers, Charles P. Liesfeld, II, Lawrence H. Liesfeld and R. Michael Liesfeld, all of Richmond.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Risen Lord with Rev. Emmanuel T. DeLeon SVD officiating. Burial will follow in Patrick Memorial Gardens. After the burial, a luncheon will be hosted by the Retired Teachers Association at the Reynolds Homestead in Critz.

BEATRICE W. VanDUYNE

Beatrice Mae Wingfield VanDuyne, 83, of Stuart, died Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at Pioneer Community Hospital in Stuart.

She was born in Henry County on August 1, 1929, and was a daughter of the late Everette and Maggie Compton Wingfield. She had worked for Pannill Knitting Co.

Surviving are one daughter, Bonnie Donaldson of Stuart; one granddaughter; and four great-grandchildren.

All services were private.

JAMES H. WILSON JR.

James Harvey Wilson Jr. died Monday, January 7, 2013, in Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., after a brief illness.

He was born March 16, 1927 in Florence, S.C., and was a son of the late James Harvey Wilson Sr. and Martha Jane Gamble Wilson. He was also predeceased by an infant son, David Gamble Wilson; a daughter, Jane Wilson Spano; and a stepson, Mike Simpson.Wilson, a Sumter, S.C., native, had lived in Meadows of Dan since 1991. He was a long time employee of Motorola, having retired in 1981.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Wilson; one brother, Burgess Wilson of Sumter, S.C.; his children, Nelie Wilson Griffin of Winston-Salem, Irma Wilson Comer of Kernersville, N.C., James Harvey Wilson III of Belews Creek, N.C.; stepchildren Len Simpson, Deborah Hayes, and Pam Williams, all of Meadows of Dan; 11 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

His memorial service was held at Moody Funeral Services in Stuart at Saturday, January 12.
