CARPENTER
Rev. James G. Carpenter, 71, of Hillsville, Va., died Monday, November 30, 1998, at the Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax. He was born February 5, 1927 in Coal City, Ill. Rev. Carpenter was pastor at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, Martinsville and interim pastor at Milner Memorial in Raleigh, N.C., pastor of All Souls Presbyterian Church in Richmond, where he served two terms on the Richmond City Council. He and his wife, Jane served as missionaries in Quito Ecuador. He also served as pastor at Hillsville Presbyterian Church for 16 years until his retirement. He was named Pastor Emeritus in 1998. At the time of his death, he was serving as pastor of Buffalo Mountain and Indian Valley Presbyterian Churches. Rev. Carpenter is survived by his wife, Jane Dykhuizen Carpenter of the home; two sons, John Mark Carpenter and wife, Alice of Raleigh, N.C. and James Scott Carpenter of Mt. Airy, N.C.; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Carpenter of Richmond; three grandchildren, Jonathan Scott Carpenter, Virginia Jane Carpenter and Emily Kathryn Carpenter. A memorial service will be held Friday, December 4, 1998, 11 a.m. at the Hillsville Presbyterian Church, Hillsville, with Rev. Don Nance, Rev. Bryan Childress, Dr. Thomas Sproule and Rev. Duane Steele officiating. Interment Buffalo Mountain Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, December 3, 1998, at the Hillsville Presbyterian Church. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Hillsville Presbyterian Church, Hillsville, Va. 24343.

CHRISTIAN
Freida Shaffer Christian, 93, of Richmond, died November 30, 1998. She was the widow of John S. Christian Jr. She is survived by three daughters, Julia Louise Christian, and Sara Neblett, both of Richmond and Jacquelyn Pendland of Highland Springs, Fla.; also one sister, Anne Rankin of Richmond; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Christian was an honorary member of Monument Ave. Crest Garden Club. Graveside services will be con ducted Thursday 11 a.m. at Westhampton Memorial Park. Woody Funeral Home assisting family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad.

DUNLAP
Barnwell S. Dunlap, of Richmond, died Tuesday, December 1, 1998. A native of Atlanta, Ga., Mr. Dunlap attended Atlanta Public Schools and Georgia Institute of Technology. He was a member of Sigma Pi Epsilon fraternity. He was also a graduate of the Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriters. Mr. Dunlap was an Army Air Force Veteran of World War II and flew as a navigator in the China Burma Theater. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal with two clusters, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the American Campaign Medal, and the European African Middle East Campaign Medal - his squadron was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation. He retired from the Air Force with the rank of major. Following the war, he returned to Atlanta and entered the Insurance Business as a special agent with the A. H. Turner Insurance Co. He was a partner with the Insurance Firms of Kinnett Edwards & Boyd and the London Agency both located in Atlanta. At the time of his retirement, he was Marketing Manager with Aetna Insurance Co. for the state of Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. He was a former President and life member of the Insurance Association of Virginia and a member of the Honorable Order of the Blue Goose International Virginia Pond where he served as Virginia's most loyal Gander. A member of the Commonwealth Club, the Westwood Club and a member of St. Lukes Episcopal Church, Powhatan, Va., where he served two terms as Senior Warden and was also a volunteer at St. Mary's Hospital. Mr. Dunlap is survived by his wife, Sue Alderman Dunlap; his son, B. S. Dunlap III; his daughter, Susan Dunlap of Lynchburg; his daughter-in-law, Katherine; and his granddaughter, Sarah; also two nieces, Celeste Dunlap Weisel of Dallas, Texas and Michelle Dunlap of Frankfurt, Germany. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. Funeral services will be held Thursday 11 a.m. at Grace & Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to your favorite charity.

EGGLESTON
Margaret (Peggy) Allen Eggleston, age 69, resident of Elizabeth Crump Manor, formerly of Mechanicsville and widow of Jessie B. Eggleston Jr. died November 30, 1998. survived by three daughters, Judith E. Stone and husband Larry D. Stone of Richmond, Beverly Page Eggleston of Mechanicsville and Elizabeth Marie Gordon of Lakehill, Texas; three grandchildren, Jason Carlisle Maybush, Lucas Gordon and Jesse Hutchinson; her sister, Dorothy Shaw of Richmond, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Eggleston was a member of the O.E.S. Chapter XIV and also was a member of Pioneers of Bell Atlantic Telephone Co. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave. where services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday. Interment Oakwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to: American Heart Association.

ELLIS
Walter Lee Ellis III, age 76, of Richmond, died Sunday, November 29, 1998. He was preceded in death by a son, Walter Lee Ellis IV. He is survived by two sons, Larry S. and Jerry Lee Ellis; one grandchild, Jeremy Lee Dulgher; three stepdaughters, Gloria J. Hobbs, Darla Neiss and Katherine Funderburk; three sisters, Eloise Smith, Zelma Habermehl and Marion Sanders; two brothers, Lonnie A. Ellis Sr. and William V. Ellis; several step-grandchildren and step-great- grandchildren; and his former wife and caring friend, Zora Ellis Ross. His remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and where funeral services will be held 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. Interment Washington Memorial Park.

GATES
William E. (Butch) Gates Jr., 36, of Varina, died suddenly on Monday, November 30, 1998. He is survived by his wife, Linda Evans Gates; a son, Kendall William Gates; his mother, Ruth Stigall Gates of Petersburg; a half sister, Laura Nenninger of St. Louis, Mo.; two half brothers, John C. Reuter of Omaha, Neb., Wayne E. Reuter of Aurora, Ill.; his parents-in- law, Bill and Patsy Evans of Highland Springs. Butch was a member of Lakemont Baptist Church in Petersburg, a life member of the West End Volunteer Rescue Squad, an active member of Company 2, New Kent Volunteer Fire Dept. and was employed as an Emergency Communications Officer for the City of Richmond. After 12 noon Wednesday, friends may call at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Road, where services will be held 11 a.m. Thurs day. Interment Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers please make contributions to Company 2 of the New Kent Volunteer Fire Dept.

HAZARD
Chester Carroll Hazard, 92, passed away on November 30, 1998 in Orange, Va. For many years Mr. Hazard resided at Montpelier Station, Va., where he was Business Manager of Montpelier Farms from 1928 until its sale to the National Trust. He was the son of the late William Thomas Hazard and the late Emma Miller Hazard. Mr. Hazard was a member of the Orange Presbyterian Church, which he served as deacon, elder and trustee and was the church treasurer for 25 years. He also served on the Orange County School Board for 32 years, and was its Chairman for 29 years. He served as President of the Board of the James Madison Muse um in Orange and was a Mason and member of the American Legion, having served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Hazard was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Mary Young Hazard. He is survived by his two daughters, Mary Chester Hazard Griffith of Kinsale, Va., and Carolyn Hazard Jones and her husband, Robert G. Jones of Virginia Beach, Va.; and by his five grandchildren, Mary Carroll Platt of Washington, D.C., Lindsay Carr Farino of Portola Valley, Calif., Charles Tayloe Griffith of Richmond, Va., Robert Griffith Jones Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va., and Chester Hazard Jones of Tampa, Fla. He is also survived by his seven great- grandchildren; and by his sister, Emma Frances Hazard Bartley of Orange, Va. A quiet, unassuming Christian gentleman, Mr. Hazard will be best remembered by his family as a wonderful father and grandfather, whose unwavering integrity and loving kindness enriched them all. A Christian service in remembrance of the life of Mr. Hazard will be held in the Orange Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. on December 3, 1998. Interment will follow at the Graham Cemetery. Preddy Funeral Home is handling arrangements. The family will receive friends between 5 and 7 p.m. at the funeral home on Wednesday after noon, December 2. HOLMES
Departed this life, November 28, 1998 in a local hospital, Rev. Dora Lee Holmes of Newtown, Va. She is survived by her husband, Fred D. Holmes Sr. of Newtown; two daughters, Rev. Drucilla B. Tate of King William, Margaret L. Dunaway of Philadelphia, Pa.; five sons, Daniel W. Ruffin Sr. (who preceded her in death), Roland N. Holmes of Mechanicsville, Rev. Fred D. Holmes Jr. of Newtown, Rev. Cornelius R. Holmes of Richmond, and Larry S. Holmes of Waldorf, Md.; three sisters, Drucilla R. Braxton of Philadelphia, Pa., Agnes R. Washington of St. Stephens Church, Laura R. Truehart of Philadelphia, Pa.; one brother, Robert Ruffin of Hampton. Her remains will lie in state Wednesday, December 2, from 12 noon until 8 p.m. at Washington Funeral Home, Tappahannock. Viewing will continue on Thursday, December 3, from 11 a.m. until hour of service at First Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Newtown, Va., where funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Rev. T. Scott Sawn and Rev. Robert D. Brown officiating. Interment in church cemetery. Professional service entrusted to Washington Funeral Home, Tappahannock.

JEFFERSON
Rudolph Jefferson Sr., 56, of Richmond died Saturday, November 28, 1998. He is survived by his wife, Denise M. Jefferson; two sons, Kenneth D. Jefferson Sr. and Rudolph Jefferson Jr.; three grandchildren, Kenneth Jr., Keyvon and Kevin Jefferson; four brothers, Willard, Clarence, Alfred and Edward Jefferson; two sisters, Betty and Millian Jefferson; a host of nieces and nephews, four sisters-in-law, four brothers-in- law, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 North 25th Street, where funeral services will be held Thursday, 11 a.m. Grath Campbell officiating. Burial Forest Lawn.

LANYI
Michael Adler Lanyi of Savyon, Israel, widower of Ilona Lanyi, died November 30, 1998 in Israel. He is survived by daughter, Marsha Caspi of Savyon, Israel and son, Thomas Lanyi of Richmond, Va. He was a long time resident of Winnetka, Illinois before retiring to Israel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Lubavitch of Virginia

Elmo L. (Ludy) Lawing Jr. of 13812 Woodsedge Rd. Colonial Heights entered eternal rest December 1, 1998. Professional service by the Dabney's Morticians. Funeral notice later.

LINDSEY
Eugenia Knox Lindsey, widow of Daniel W. Lindsey Jr., died Tuesday, December 1, 1998. She is survived by her daughter, Jean L. Oakey and her husband, John of Richmond; son, Daniel W. Lindsey III and wife, Barbara of Shorewood, Minn.; sister, Mary Knox Hubard of Norfolk, Va.; and brother-in-law, Harrison; seven grandchildren, John M. Oakey III, Daniel Lindsey Oakey, Christopher Knox Oakey, John Tyler Lindsey, Katherine Lindsey Auchter, Daniel W. Lindsey IV and Sarah Macon Lindsey; great-grandson, John Tyler Lindsey Jr. Mrs. Lindsey was a lifelong member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Richmond where she was baptized the first year of the church, a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Virginia and a former member of The Woman's Club. Funeral services will be at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church Thursday, December 3, 1998 at 11 a.m. Interment in Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Stephen's Endowment Fund. Arrangements by the Central Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home.

MALLORY
Died November 30, 1998, Virginia C. Mallory, 91, of Hampton, formerly of Ashland. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Ruby and George E. Corker Jr. of Hampton; four grandchildren, Phyllis and Robert Stoneburner, Winchester, Cheryl and Scott Bookwalter, Poquoson, Gary and Nancy Corker of Ashland, and Larry Corker of Hampton; eight great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Marie Williams, Ashland, Gertrude Babcock, Richmond and Anne Bridwell of Yorktown. Mrs. Lillie Belle Woolfolk Morton, widow of Hugo E. Morton and formerly of 2706 Hanes Ave. departed this life November 30, 1998. She is survived by six nephews, Peter Woolfolk (D.C.), David and Samuel Wool folk (Conn.), George Woolfolk (Ga.), William Woolfolk (Calif.), Lorenzo Harris (Va.); three nieces, Elise Woolfolk Holmes (Ga.), Doris Woolfolk Gee (Texas) and Rosina Woolfolk Ward (Pa.); many great-nieces, great- nephews and friends. Her remains rest at W.S. Watkins & Son Funeral Home where her family will receive friends 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. After 10 a.m. Thursday, her remains will rest in Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church where funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Rev. Rodney Hunter, officiating. NICHOLLS
Margaret Nicholls died Monday, November 30, 1998. She is survived by her husband, Malcolm R. Nicholls Sr.; daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Clint Wilkinson; son, M. Roger Nicholls Jr.; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Kim and Dan Probst; grandson, Brian Wilkinson and granddaughter, Lynn Wilkinson. Mrs. Nicholls was a lifetime member of the Forest View Rescue Squad Auxiliary, a member of Westover Baptist Church and past President of the A V A V R S . Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road, where the family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday. Interment Maury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Forest View Rescue Squad or Westover Baptist Church.

POPE
Miss Mary Ellen Pope, 83, of Richmond, died November 28, 1998. She is survived by her nieces, Sue Wise, Jean Beckley, Phyllis Keilman, and Pamela Price; and brother-in-law, Daniel Kulczyk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, December 2, 1998 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of St. Joseph Home. Interment Mt. Calvary.

SAUNDERS
Pauline Iris Saunders, age 94, of Chester, died December 1, 1998. She was the daughter of the late William Hirum Foutz and Lucy Dooley Foutz of Roanoke, Va. Pauline was the wife of Luther "Jack" Saunders and moth er of Frances Hurley Barnes, both deceased. She is survived by her granddaughter, Sherrie Barnes Bowman and grandson, Kevin Patrick Barnes; son-in-law, Talmage E. Bowman; four great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two nieces. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at J.T. Morriss in Chester on Dec. 2, 1998. A service will be held at J.T. Morriss Chapel at 12 Noon Thursday. The interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.

SHARP
Duffy Sharp Jr., age 70, of Richmond, died December 1, 1998. He was preceded in death by his oldest son, Mel Stuart Sharp. survived by his wife, of 49 years, Ella Louise Sharp; two sons, Willis Sharp and his wife, Judy, and Randy Wayne Sharp; three grandchildren, Willis Sharp Jr., Steven Sharp and his wife, Jody, and Victoria Sharp; also two brothers, Paul and Sam Sharp all of Richmond. Mr. Sharp was an Icon in the electrical industry for over 50 years. Remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave. Graveside services will be held 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Washington Memorial Park.

SMITH
Departed this life November 25, 1998, Ms. Geneva V. Smith, age 37, of 6555 Balsam Rd. She is survived by her parents, Shirley Taylor Starke; father, Walter E. Smith; stepfather, Leon Starke; four sisters; six brothers; grandmother, Geneva Bigger; four aunts; two uncles; host of nieces, nephews and cousins; one brother-in-law; and other relatives and friends. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at 1st Baptist Church at 720 Cheatwood Avenue. Rev. Andre Wimbush (pastor), Rev. Darrell Taylor officiating. Family and friends assemble at the church 10:45 a.m. Thursday.
