As a young woman, she attended classes at Coker in preparation for her study at Westhampton College at the University of Richmond where she was graduated in 1923 with a bachelor's degree in English and history. After a year's study with pianist Robert Casadesus in Paris, she taught at Judson College (Ala.) from 1927-29, was supervisor of music for the Hartsville Public Schools from 1929-38, and attended Coker College, from which she received a second degree in 1940, this one in music. She also pursued graduate study at the University of Oklahoma, the Eastman School of Music and Northwestern University. She also served on the Board of Administration, the governing body of the church. She sponsored campus beautification projects on both the UR and Coker College campuses. At UR she donated both time and money to numerous landscaping projects at Westhamp ton College, where one of her many projects included the donation of the Italian fountain on the Westhampton College Quadrangle named in honor of Leslie Sessoms Booker, a member of the class of 1922 and former Alumnae Secretary. She also was a founder and patron of the Richmond Symphony. Her UR honors include Mortar Board, Westhampton College's Distinguished Alumna Award, the Voice of the University Award, the Trustees' Distinguished Service Award, and the Alumni of the University of Richmond Award for Distinguished Service. In 1979, Coker College honored her with the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award for Distinguished Service. She also received the Outstanding Alumna Award in 1981 and an honorary degree in 1984. In presenting her the Voice of the University Award in 1976, UR speech and theatre faculty member William H. Lockey noted, "No single person in the University family has such a determined interest in supporting the beauty of our campus." She also was a member of the Westhampton College Alumnae Association Governing Board, the UR Rector's Club, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Tuckahoe Woman's Club, the Tuckahoe Terrace Garden Club, the National Music Library Association and Arachnidae (a scholarship honorary society).
