SMOAK
Mrs. Betsy (Rice) Smoak left us for her Lord Jesus February 5, 1997. "For me, to live is Christ and to die is gain." Daughter of Elsie Rice, Betsy served as a missionary with her husband Tom for 34 years. She was a loving mother of six, grandmother of seven and dear sister. God loaned her beautiful life to us for a little while that we might see more of Him...because she lived. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to Wycliffe Bible Translators, Hunting ton Beach, Calif. 92647.

STEMBRIDGE
Mr. Robert James Stembridge, age 72, of Chase City, passed away Wednesday, February 5, 1997. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Frances Trent Stembridge; his daughter and her husband, Brenda Hamlette and Jerry Wayne Hamlette Sr. of Lynchburg; his sisters, Nannie Lee Hamaker of Richmond and Valeria Rickman of Chase City; his brother, Bryant Stembridge of Chase City; his grandchildren, Cheryl Card of Chase City, Sherry Lloyd and Jerry Wayne Hamlette Jr., both of Lynchburg; his great-granddaughter, Crystal Michelle Card of Chase City and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Saturday (tonight) 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Newcomb Allgood Funeral Home in Chase City and where services will be held Sunday, February 9 at 2 p.m. with the Reverend Bill Thornton officiating. Interment will follow in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Chase City. Memorial contributions may be directed to your local Rescue Squad or Fire Department. Mr. Stembridge was a retired welder for the former Westinghouse in South Boston, a re tired tobacco farmer and a former employee of Byrd's Food Store in Chase City, a Navy Veteran of World War II, a member of the American Legion Post #43 and a life-long member of Bethel Baptist Church.

STRASH
Adam Michael Strash, died February 5, 1997. He is survived by his parents, Dr. Alfred M. Strash and Linda L. Neely; two sisters, Jennifer and Rebecca Strash; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Strash; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Anthony J. Bleichner; and several other relatives. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd. where funeral services will be held Saturday, 1 p.m. Interment Dale Memorial Park.

TAYLOR
Carl L. Taylor, owner and president of Tank Trailer Inc., died February 6, 1997. He is survived by his wife, Frances Fulp Taylor and her family and their extended family, Tim and Linda Ford. Mr. Taylor had been active in the tank truck industry for 40 years. He was a member of the National Tank Truck Carriers Association, National Trailer Dealers Association and the Liquid Waste Haulers Association. He was on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Trucking Association, serving as treasurer and also the American Trucking Association. Mr. Taylor was a member of the Manchester Lodge No. 14 AF & AM, Scottish Rite Bodies and the Acca Temple Shrine. He was a member of the Million Dollar Band and the Manchester Shrine Club. He was also a charter member of Willow Oaks Country Club. He attended John Marshall High School and played in the band. He was a Navy Veteran of WWII. The family will receive friends Friday from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd. and where Masonic Memorial service will be held Friday at 7 p.m. and funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park. Mr. Taylor was a supporter of the Shriners Hospital for Children and the Scottish Rite Childhood Language Center. Contributions will be appreciated in his memory c/o Acca Temple at 1712 Bellevue Ave.

TERRELL
Annie P. (Betty) Terrell, 83, of Richmond, died Thursday, February 6, 1997. She was the widow of Guy Elwood Terrell, and is survived by her sons, Frank Elwood Terrell and Guy Gregory Terrell; brothers, Cedric Pittman and Clarence Pittman; one sister, Josephine Coiner. Her remains at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday (today). A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday (today) in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad, 1101 Horsepen Rd., Richmond Va. 23229.

TRISTANY
Anna V. Tristany of Richmond, died February 6, 1997. She is survived by two sons, Russell Baumann and Fred Baumann of Albany, NY; daughter, Barbara Nottke also of Albany; sisters, Mary Chenoweth of Forked River, NJ and Helen Dudinski of Bayville, NJ; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. Her remains rest at Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd. where family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday (today).

WALL
Reverend William A. Wall, age 67, of Tappahannock, died February 6, 1997. survived by his wife, Jo Anne Wall; his sister, Carolyn W. and husband Rodney Smith of Newport News; sister-in-law, Yvonne C. and husband, Max Lowrie. He attended Bluefield Baptist College, Bluefield, VA.; Carsonewman Baptist College, Jefferson City, TN., Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Ft. Worth, TX; he was Assistant Pastor of Bell Avenue Baptist Church, Knoxville, TN; Pastor of Eastville Baptist Church, Eastville, VA; and Upper King and Queen Baptist Church, King and Queen Co., VA. At retirement he started Walls Wood Shed, Tappahannock, VA. making wooden toys and children's furniture. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, Tappahannock. Remains rest at B. W. White Funeral Home, Aylett, where the family will receive friends, from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, and where services will be held Sunday, 2 p.m. Interment Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery. Rev. Glen Cannon and Rev. John Yeatts officiating.

WINFREY
Miss Irma A. Winfrey, 99, of Mechanicsville, died Sunday, February 2, 1997. She is survived by one brother, William S. Winfrey of Mechanicsville and several nieces and nephews. Miss Winfrey was a member of Cool Spring Baptist Church. Remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Sunday, and where services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday. Interment Signal Hill Memorial Park. BALDERSON
Gladys Connelly Balderson, age 97, of Hampton, formerly of Newland, widow of Guy M. Balderson, died on Thursday, May 15, 1997. Mrs. Balderson was the daughter of the late Rev. George and Lorena Connelly and was a member of Welcome Grove Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons, Maurice "Winston" Balderson of Landham, Md. and Gayle R. Balderson of Hampton; a daughter, Jeane B. Woolson of Hampton; six grandchildren; eight great- grandchildren; a sister, Ernestine C. Hoffman of Richmond. A funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Welcome Grove Baptist Church, Newland, with burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at Welch-Marks Funeral Home, Warsaw. Memorial contributions may be made to the Welcome Grove Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 408 Kinderhook Pike, Warsaw, Va. 22572 or your favorite charity.

BELVIN
Joy Collins Belvin, 90, of Richmond, died Friday, May 16, 1997. She was preceded in death by her husband, Verney A. Belvin; two daughters, Nettie B. Masters of Alexandria, Va., and Edith B. Balbeisi of Richmond; one sister, Estelle C. Lawson of Amelia; one brother, Junius Collins of Richmond; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and where services will be held 11 a.m. Monday. Interment Oakwood Cemetery.

Thomas; three nephews, one devoted, Dr. Fred T. Stokes, Don Brawley, of New York and Ernest Williams, of Georgia; three nieces, Helen A. Stokes, Rose B. Crawford and Barbara B. Graham, both of New York; a great- niece, Debra S. Brown; two daughters-in-law, Alice P. Brown and Angela S. Brown; a son-in-law, Harold Ligon, of South Carolina; two cousins, Berthel Monroe and Bedford Smith, of Maryland; a devoted friend, Novella Brown; a host of other relatives and friends. BURNETTE
Blanche S. Burnette, 83, of Richmond went to be with her Lord Friday, May 16, 1997. She was the widow of Ollen L. Burnette. She is survived by her daughters, Mildred B. Bailey and Doris J. Edwards, both of Richmond; her son, M. Warren Burnette of Dinwiddie; her stepsons, Ollen Burnette Jr. of Alabama and Wayne Burnette of Richmond; thirteen grandchildren and five great -grandchildren; her sister, Julia Huneycutt; her brother, Curtis Smith, both of Oakboro, N.C. Mrs. Burnette was a retired employee of the catalog department of Sears Roebuck & Co. and was active in many West End clubs. Remains rest at Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Road, where the family will receive friends 3 to 5 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad.

CHISHOLM
Jacqueline G. Chisholm passed away on May 16, 1997. She is survived by her mother, Dorothy K. Chisholm; her brother, Charles E. Chisholm; and sisters, Lori Chisholm and Deborah Potter. Jacqueline was a graduate of Henrico High School and Virginia Commonwealth University. She taught school in Shenandoah and Henrico County Public Schools. A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 1214 Wilmer Ave. on Saturday, May 24 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Camp Va. Alease Atkins Douglewicz, age 87, of Charles City, widower of Joseph T. Douglewicz, died May 15, 1997. survived by a son, Thomas A. Douglewicz of Charles City; a grandson, Joshua T. Douglewicz of Chesterfield. Family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 East Laburnum Ave., where services will be held 2 p.m. Monday. Helen Kathleen Hawks Downs, age 78, died May 16, 1997. She was the widow of Gerald Eugene Downs. She was preceded in death by a son, William David Downs. She is survived by two daughters, Kay Downs Candelario of Virginia Beach, Mary Elaine Downs Harding of Courtland; three sisters, Irene Hawks Davis of Miami, Fla., Elizabeth Hawks Daniels and Margaret Hawks Smith, both of Christmas, Fla.; six grandchildren, Chip Vincent of Southern Shores, N.C., Scott and Gerry Vincent of Emporia, Donna Downs Griffies and Kay Downs Allen, both of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., and Beth Harding Marshall of Norfolk, Va.; eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at the Main Street Baptist Church, Emporia, with interment in the Greensville Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Echols Funeral Home, Emporia. Arthur T. (Tom) Fulghum III, 54, of Chester, died Wednesday, May 14, 1997. He is survived by his wife, Jean S. Fulghum; his son, Richard G. Fulghum; his father, Arthur T. Fulghum Jr.; his brother, Richard M. Fulghum; his sister, Juanita A. Fulghum. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd., where services will be held 11 a.m. Monday. Interment Sunset Memorial Park. Goodman, of Rockville, Md., beloved son of Susan and Allan Goodman and the late Harvey Goodman; loving brother of Perri Rebecca Goodman; beloved grandson of Adele and Henry Shapiro and Virginia and Leonard Goodman; nephew of Kenny and Evalyn Cohn, Sydnor Shapiro, Lloyd Goodman, Sandy and Kathy Goodman, Sandy and Jane Shapiro; and cousins, Robert, Rachel, Joel, Jill and Madie.
