POWELL
Elizabeth H. Powell, age 83, of Richmond, widow of Charles E. Powell, died November 26, 1998. survived by her children, Emmett Wade Powell, Thomas T. Powell and Elsie P. Hackett; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren. Services will be private.

RAY
John M. Ray, 78, of Richmond, died Thursday, November 26, 1998. He was preceded in death by his wife, Velma J. Ray. Survivors include two sons, Larry Ray and his wife, Susan and Dean Ray and his wife, Helen, all of Powhatan; one sister, Nealie Harrell of Georgia; and four grandchildren, M. Dean Ray, Kami E. Sineath, Joseph M. Ray and John N. Ray. Mr. Ray was retired from the U.S. Navy with 20 years of service. He was a retired lieutenant of the State Capitol Police and was a 50 year member of Masonic Lodge #345. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road, where the family will receive friends 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday and 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday. A Masonic Service will be held 7 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. Interment Maury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bainbridge Street Baptist Church.

RICHTER
Virginia (Gina) McKinley Richter of Richmond died November 25, 1998. She was a retired secretary of Millhiser, Inc., an active member of Medical College of Virginia Hospitals Auxiliary Hospital and Volunteers and a life time member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She is survived by two daughters and sons in-law Robin Anne and Don Bolick of Norfolk, and Marguerite (Peggy) and Robert Dowdy; three grandchildren, Aaron, Matthew, and Kathleen Dowdy. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. A funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Monday at St. Pat rick's Catholic Church. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery. If desired, donations may be made to St. Patrick's Catholic Church or Medical College of Virginia Hospital's Auxiliary and Volunteers.

Departed this life November 26, 1998, Mrs. Mary Rogers of 2400 Burton St. formerly of 718 N. Chimborazo Blvd. Reposing at the Scott- Lightfoot Funeral Home, 3021 "N" St. Services to be announced.

SANDS
Lily E. Sands, 83, of Richmond, died November 26, 1998 at her home. She was born February 25, 1915, in White Gate, Va. The daughter of the late Ward and Mary Sands, she was preceded in death by her brother, Ellis Sands. She is survived by two sisters, Gladys Compton of Fincastle, Va. and Mary Dove of Troutville, Va.; her brother, L. H. (Pete) Sands of Rocky Gap, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Ms. Sands was retired from E. I. Dupont and was a member of Berryman United Methodist Church. Graveside Services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Fort Hill Memorial Park in Lynchburg, Va. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Odd Fellows Home, 600 Elmwood Ave., Lynchburg, Va.

SAYLOR
George W. Saylor, 73, of Del Rio Drive, Port Orange, Fla., died Wednesday, November 25, 1998 in Gainesville, Fla. He was born in Bristol, Tenn. and a former resident of Richmond, Va. He was a World War II Army veteran and retired from Miller Manufacturing Co. as a lumber purchasing agent and supervisor for 30 years. Survivors include his wife, Ruby; three sons, Phil of Atlanta, Ga., Jerry of Indiatlantic, Fla., and Daryel of Port Orange, Fla.; one daughter, Susan Saylor of Columbia, Md.; two grandchildren. Volusia Memorial Funeral Home, Port Orange, Fla. is in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Assoc., 1900 S. Harbor City Blvd., Suite 302, Melbourne, Fla. 32901.

SMITH
Margaret W. Smith, 73, of Newport News, Va died Tuesday, November 24, 1998. She is survived by her husband, Robert C. Smith Jr. who is a 40 year retiree of Virginia Power; one daughter, Cheryl Cunningham; two grandchildren, George Cunningham, IV and Shalie Cunningham. Remains rest at the Central Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where the family will receive friends on Friday, November 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Also where a funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Ministries Endowment Fund of Pine Street Baptist Church, 400 S. Pine St., Richmond, Va. 23220

Departed this life November 25, 1998, Annie May Tyler of Montpelier. She was the widow of the late Cleveland Tyler. She leaves to cherish her memory seven daughters, Virginia Tyler, Jo Ann Greene, Marion Snead, Barbara Word, Selena Coates, Shirley Tyler and Brenda Gordon; three sons, William, Earl and Ernest Tyler; 42 grandchildren, 50 great- grandchildren; seven great-great- grandchildren; one sister, Ethel Buggs; four sons-in-law, Grover Gordon, Lee Word, William Greene and Donald Coates; four daughters-in- law, Mable, Mary, Annie and Rose Lee Tyler; two brothers-in-law; one sister-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Henry W. Dabney Funeral Home, Washington Hwy. (U.S. 1N), Ashland. Funeral service 1 p.m. Monday at Bethany Baptist Church, Montpelier. Rev. Ronald Hart officiating. WILLIAMS
Connie Duncan Williams, age 52, of Urbanna, formerly of Richmond, died Thursday, November 26, 1998. She was a member of Urbanna United Methodist Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department. She is survived by her husband, Wayne W. Williams; her mother, Hattie Duncan, Urbanna; one brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Delores Duncan; one aunt, Helen Huffer; two nieces, Donna Lehmann and Debbie Suter, all of Richmond. Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, November 29, in Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home, Saluda. Interment Remlik Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Remlik. ADAMS
Mr. Walter L. (Q-Ball) Adams, 81, of Chesterfield, went to be with the Lord on January 28, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Adams; his son, James Gracen Adams; his daughter, Nancy Blanchard; two brothers, Ralph and John Adams; his sister, Louise Southers; four grandchildren; and his great-grandson. Mr. Adams retired from Dupont in 1982, with over 35 years of service. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd., where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, with interment in Dale Memorial Park and where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Manchester Volunteer Rescue Squad.

BULLOCK
Stephen A. Bullock, 55, of Midlothian, died January 28, 1999. He was an employee of Riverside Wellness Center and is survived by three brothers, Stuart H. Bullock of Richmond, Peter A. Bullock of Oswego, N.Y., and August Bullock of Santa Cruz, Calif.; two nieces, Paige Herring and Heather Bullock; two nephews, Bryan Bullock and Jason Bullock; two great-nephews, Christopher and Brandon Herring. A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 31, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., where the family will receive friends after the service. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Alliance for Mentally Ill of Virginia, 200 N. Glebe Rd., Suite 1015, Arlington, Va. 22203.

CARLTON
Mary Britt Carlton, age 95, a lifelong resident of Boykins, died Thursday, January 28, 1999. Born on June 18, 1903, she was the daughter of the late Walter H. and Mary Parker Britt. She was a member of Boykins United Methodist Church and its oldest continuous living member. She served as the president of the Mason Bible Class and as chairperson of the Parsonage Committee for many years. She was past president of the Boykins Woman's Club and had graduated from what is now known as James Madison University with a degree in home economics. She was the widow of Herman Odell Carlton. She is survived by her daughter, Con stance Carlton Day and her husband, David A. Day III of Boykins; two nephews, Dr. J. Mills Britt Jr. of Franklin and Walter H. Britt III of Suffolk. A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, January 31, 1999, at 3 p.m. in Boykins United Methodist Church by the Rev. L. Raymond McGarr and the Rev. James Browder. Burial will follow at Beechwood Cemetery, Boykins. The family will receive friends at Purviance Funeral Home, Boykins, on Saturday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times at the residence of David and Connie Day, 33333 Pine Crest Dr., Boykins. Memorial donations may be made to the Memorial Fund of Boykins United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Kitty Lassiter, P.O. Box 246, Boykins, Va.

CARTER
Oscar Blair Carter, 84, of Richmond, died Thursday, January 28, 1999. He is survived by his nephews, T. Scott Carter of Richmond, and W. Blair Carter of Norfolk. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

CHILDS
Arlene W. Childs departed this life, January 27, 1999 at Williamsburg Community Hospital. She is survived by four sons and three daughters-in- law, Junior Washington, Leon and Pauline Washington, Harvey and Evelyn Childs, Robert and Robinette Childs; two sisters, Mae Anna Weston, Ruth Beverly; two brothers, Daniel and Freddie Washington; 13 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Henry W. Dabney Funeral Home, Washington Hwy. (U.S. 1 North), Ashland, Va. Funeral services will be Sunday, January 31 at 2 p.m. at the Mangohick Baptist Church. Rev. Michael Norris officiating. Interment church cemetery. Family and friends will assemble at the church at 1:45. McCarthy director.

CLARKE
Mrs. Ethel Parker Crocker Clarke entered eternal rest Thursday, January 28, 1999, in Southside Regional Medical Center. She leaves to cherish her beautiful life, one devoted daughter and son-in-law, with whom she resided, Julia C. and Ernest Richardson of Dinwiddie; one devoted son and daughter-in-law, Rev. William E. and Zeldna Clarke of Chesterfield; two granddaughters; two grandsons; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 2, at Oak Street AME Zion Church. Interment will be in Eastview Cemetery. Please omit food. Funeral arrangements provided by William N. Bland & Son Funeral Home.

Mr. John D. Evans of Lamb Ave. and a former employee of the American Tobacco Co. departed this life January 29, 1999. The staff of W.S. Watkins and Son Funeral Home is serving his family.

Thomas West Ford, 74, of Woodland Road, Hopewell, died Friday, January 29, 1999 at his residence. He was born in Richmond, Va. and was a lifelong resident of Hopewell. Mr. Ford was the son of the late Herbert M. and Sallie R. West Ford. He was a charter member of Jordan Point Country Club, charter member of Salt Water Anglers, former member of the Rotary Club, and a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. Mr. Ford was a retired Masonry Contractor after thirty-eight years. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy O. Ford of Hopewell; one daughter, Sallie Ragland Ford Doeg of Germantown, Tenn.; one son, Thomas West Ford Jr. of Hopewell; two grandchildren, Thomas Frederic Doeg and John West Doeg, both of Germantown, Tenn. The family will receive friends Saturday, January 30, 1999 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Monday, February 1, 1999 at 11 a.m. in St. John's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Edward S. Bushong Jr., Rector officiating. Interment in Appomattox Cemetery. Mrs. Simmie Norman Freeman of 5006 Colwyck Drive departed this life January 29, 1999. Her remains will rest at Mimms Funeral Home, 1827 Hull St. Winfree-Wright Funeral Service, Amherst, Va., in charge of arrangements. Complete notice will appear later.

Boyce Tupper George, 61, of Cumberland, died Thursday, January 28, 1999 at Johnston-Willis Hospital in Richmond. He was born November 23, 1937, the son of the late Mark Manford George and Inez Collins George of Cumberland. Surviving are four sons, William B. George, Michael L. George and wife, Patricia, Ricky M. George and wife, Lisa, all of Richmond, Barry W. George and wife, Kristin of Powhatan; two daughters, Wendy George Smith and husband, Harrison of Charlottesville, Cheri A. George of Atlanta; one brother, David S. George and wife, Barbara of Cumberland; two sisters, Mildred Huskey of Richmond, Mary Anne Speas and husband, Roy of Stanley, N.C.; and seven grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Shorter Funeral Home in Farmville. Funeral services for Mr. George will be held at Fitzgerald Baptist Church in Cumberland, Sunday at 3 p.m. with interment at Center Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
