SHEVELLE MICHELLE COLUMBUS

Portsmouth -- Shevelle Michelle “Velle” Columbus, 27 of the 2000 block of High Street was called home to be the Lord June 16, 2006, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. She was born in Portsmouth, VA. Shevelle gave her life to Christ, and she was a member of Wisdom of God Ministries. She was the daughter of Stella Porter. Her survivors include her three beautiful daughters, Shaquala Columbus, Deshayla Columbus, and Zykira Harris all of Portsmouth; three sisters, Margaret Gibson, Renee Grant (Ernest , Sr) and Patricia Porter, all of Portsmouth; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and a special friend Andre Harris. A life celebration will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, June 22 at New Hope Church of Christ Holiness, 2500 Peach Street, Portsmouth, by Elder, Dr. Martin D. Perry, Sr. and Pastor Raymond C. Taylor. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery. Viewing will be held on Wednesday, June 21 at J.T. Fisher Funeral Services from 12 noon to 6 p.m. J.T. Fisher Funeral Services is handling the final care arrangements.

GERALDINE GRAY

Chesapeake — Geraldine China Gray, 68, of the 3000 block of Camelot Blvd, departed this life on June 13, 2006 in Suffolk, VA. Ms. Gray was born in Sumter, South Carolina to Robert and Sallie China. She retired after 10 years of service as a Nursing Assistant.

Ms. Gray leaves to cherish her memories 6 daughters Cynthia China, Janice Caine, Sharon Chachere, Kimberly Dial, Robin Gray and Sherri Dial and a brother Joseph China (Laura). Also left to cherish her memories are sister in laws Thelma China and Rosetta McClellan, 14 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A life celebration service will be held on Monday, June 19 at 11am at Olive Branch Baptist Church with Pastor Ernest Reid, Jr officiating. Interment will be private.

The family will assemble at 3009 Camelot Blvd at 10am. Viewing will be held on Sunday, June 18 at J T Fisher Funeral Services, Inc. 1080 N George Washington Hwy Chesapeake, from 1 pm to 6pm. The family will be at the funeral home from 5 pm to 6pm to receive family and friends. J T Fisher Funeral Services, Inc. is handling the final care arrangements.

JAMES EDWARD MAZE

Norfolk — James Edward Maze was born on January 6, 1967 and was the 2nd child born to the proud parents of Cleveland Senior and Geraldine Maze. He was educated in the Grand Rapids Christian Schools and graduated from Grand Rapids Christian High School in June of 1985. James loved sports and during his schooling, he played junior varsity and varsity football, basketball and track.

In February 1986, James enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and received two rifle expert badges. James met his wife Eleanor in October 1986 at the Marine Corp gymnasium in Norfolk, Virginia. He loved the area and settled there. He was an avid fisherman and would go fishing every chance he had. James received a Masters Angler Award and many fishing certificates from the Commonwealth of Virginia.

James was a thinking man. He was open, and always ready to make friends. He could strike up a conversation with anyone and was willing to help others in need. James was a Christian and loved the Lord.

James was preceded in death by his daughter Jeanetta Nichole Maze. He leaves cherished memories, which will be held deep in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed by his wife Eleanor Maze, sons James and Cleveland, mother and father Geraldine and Cleveland Maze, Sr.; Brother Cleveland (Vivian) Maze; Sisters Dr. Tanisha Maze (fiance' Dago Berto Garcia) and Tonya (Anthony) Casey; Grandmother Naphenia Morgan; 4 nieces and 2 nephews; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. James, you are loved!

LIZZIE B. AUSTON

Portsmouth — On Saturday, July 15, 2006, God called home a precious jewel. Lizzie Bremby “Peanut” Auston, a native of Nansemond County, VA was the daughter of the late John and Mary Francis Bremby. She retired from LD Amory Seafood of Hampton. Ms. Auston was preceded in death by her husband John Henry Auston, Sr., and son John Henry Auston, Jr.

She leaves to cherish her memory two devoted daughters, Doris Auston-Parker (Lester), and Vivian Auston, sister Lillie White, and brother Leo Bremby all of Portsmouth, eight grandchildren, fourteen beautiful great-grandchildren, three sister-in-laws Rosetta McClellan, Susan Bremby, Hattie Mae Bremby, a daughter-in-law, Godmother to her grandchildren Sondra Moore and a special friend Mrs. Annie Harrell. Also left to cherish her memory are a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A life celebration service will be held on Saturday, 12 noon, July 22 at Poplar Run Baptist Church located at 5330 Bennetts Pasture Road in Suffolk with Pastor James Williams officiating. Interment will be in the Poplar Run Cemetery immediately following the service. Viewing will be held on Friday, July 21 from 2pm until 7pm at J. T. Fisher Funeral Services located at 1080 N George Washington Hwy Chesapeake, VA. The family has entrusted J. T. Fisher Funeral Services to handle the final care arrangements.

CRAIG GRIFFIN

Chesapeake — Craig Griffin, 48, of the 2000 block of Gilmerton Road in Chesapeake, departed this life on July 12, 2006. A life celebration service will be held at 12 noon on Friday, July 21 at J. T. Fisher Funeral Services Chapel located at 1080 N George Washington Hwy., Chesapeake, VA. The final care arrangements are handled by J.T. Fisher Funeral Services.

DEMARCUS BOLDEN

Chesapeake — Demarcus Antonio Bolden also known as Marcus, 20, of the 2000 block of Anna Maria Way, departed this life on July 11. He was called home not to have pain another day. Marcus was born in Columbus, Mississippi to Orlando and Teresa Bolden. He graduated Deep Creek High School. Marcus attended Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church where he was a previous Junior Missionary.

He leaves to cherish his memory his parents, Orlando and Teresa Bolden, sister, Tiara Marisha Bolden, and brother Milton Raymond Bolden. Also left to cherish his memory are his grandparents Mary and John Allen, Willie Moody, James and Mary Bell Morris and Thomas Bolden.

A viewing will be held today from 4 pm – 7pm at J. T. Fisher Funeral Services located at 1080 N George Washington Hwy Chesapeake, VA. Funeral services will be held at Charity Full Gospel Baptist Church in Crawford, MS on Monday, July 17 at 1:00. The family has entrusted J.T. WILLIE MAE GOODMAN

Portsmouth — Willie Mae Goodman, 75, of the 900 block of Douglas Avenue, departed this life on Wednesday, August 30, 2006. Ms. Goodman retired from Maryview Medical Center in March 1993 after 31 years of service. She was a former member of St. John Baptist Church in Portsmouth, VA.

Ms. Goodman is predeceased by her husband George M. Goodman, Sr. and son; Ernest O. Goodman. She leaves to cherish her memory 4 daughters; Hattie V. McIntyre (Edward), Deborah C. Stafford (Jeremiah), Terry D. Roots (Glenwood) and Willie Mae Brown (Reginald); and two sons; George M. Goodman, Jr. (Lucy) and Tony M. Goodman (Daphne). Also left to cherish her memory are 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Viewing will be held on Friday, September 1, 2006 from 7pm until 9pm at J. T. Fisher Funeral Services located at 1080 N. George Washington Hwy., Chesapeake, VA. A life celebration service will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2006 at 2pm at Macedonia Baptist Church, 1705 Shipyard Road in Chesapeake, VA with Rev. George E. Davis, Jr. officiating. DANIEL ELLIS

Chesapeake — Daniel “Donnell” Ellis, 53, of Columbus Avenue, died on August 28, 2006 at Maryview Hospital. Donnell was a Supervisor at Western Branch Mosquito Control. He was also a Mason and a well known little league baseball coach in the Western Branch area. He leaves to cherish his memory a daughter; Nikki Traylor, and two sons Daniel Martinez and Marquis Ellis. Also left to cherish his memory is a brother James Ellis and a host of aunts, uncles, friends and co-workers. A life celebration service will be held on Friday, September 1, 2006 at J. T. Fisher Funeral Services; 1080 N George Washington Hwy Chesapeake, VA at 11:30 am. Viewing will be on Thursday, August 31 from 12 – 5pm at the funeral home. The family has entrusted J. T. PHILIP E. PARR, SR

Chesapeake — Philip E. Parr, Sr. 77, of the Deep Creek area, departed this life on Friday, August 25, 2006 at Chesapeake General Hospital. Mr. Parr was born in Dyersburg, Tennessee and was a Korean War Veteran. For over 12 years, Mr. Parr attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Ollie G. Parr, daughter; Catherine A. Parr, and two sons; Philip E. Parr, II and Gregory Parr (Joselyn). Also left to cherish his memory are three grandchildren; Natasha A. Hampton, Paul M. P. Parr, and Philip E. Parr, III; a great-grandson; Philip E. Parr, IV, four nieces and four nephews plus a host of loving family and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 30 at 1:30pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 2820 Galberry Road; Chesapeake. Viewing will be held Tuesday, August 29 from 11 am until 8 pm with the family present from 5 – 8 pm at J. T. Fisher Funeral Services located at 1080 N George Washington Hwy., Chesapeake. RICKEY V. COPELAND

Portsmouth — Rickey V. Copeland, 42, of the 200 block of Edison Avenue, was called home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 08, 2007. Mr. Copeland faithfully was a Sheet Metal Specialist at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard for 17 years.

He is predeceased by his father, Hersey E. Copeland, Sr. and grandmother, Sallie Phillips.

Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Peggy Copeland, and daughter, Chardonnay Hawkins, one son, Niquo Hawkins, two sisters; Joyce A. (James) Henderson and Tasha F. Copeland, one brother, Hersey E. Copeland, Jr., uncles; John E. (Barbara) Copeland, Sr. and William (Evelyn) Windley, aunt, Lucille Windley. Also his loving fiancée, Bernice Stackhouse.

Viewing will be held on Monday, August 13, 2007, from 12 noon until 5pm at J. T. Fisher Funeral Services, located at 1080 N. George Washington Hwy., Chesapeake.

A life celebration service will be held on Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at 12noon at First Baptist Church Camelot where the pastor is Rev. Cecil Wicker. The Rev. Marcus Brown will be officiating. Burial will be at Carver Cemetery, Suffolk, VA.

Chesapeake - Andre Trotter, also known as Rude Boy, 30, of the 2000 block of Meadows Landing, departed this life Sunday, July 29, 2007. He was born in Portsmouth to Joyce Trotter and Jehu Hill. Andre attended Wilson High School. He was a member of Faith and Action Church in Norfolk.

Andre will be greatly missed by his fiancée; Angela Gaynor and their sons; Robert and Qwenta Gaynor. He will also be missed by his parents; Joyce Trotter and Jehu Hill, sisters; Shante Holland-Artis(Dwayne), Sherry Holland, Shannon Elliott and Sherita Elliott; and brothers; Troy Holland, Jason Hill, David Trotter and G. Hill. Also left to cherish his memories are aunts; Sherry Holland, Brenda Hill, Lillian Williams, Lilly Mayo, Mary Williams and Sincerial Ferrell; uncle, Wenda Ferrell; future father and mother in law John and Gail Johnson; future sister in laws; Vanetta Williams and Johnelle Johnson; future brother in law, Linwood Williams , and cousins.

SHERRY A. MCFARLAND

Sherry Ann McFarland was born in Portsmouth, Virginia on June 01, 1950, to the late Gertrude Boston and the late Marion Alexander McFarland. Sherry was called home on Saturday, July 21, 2007, at Peninsula Hospital in Far Rockaway, New York.

Sherry attended public schools in Portsmouth, Virginia. She had an overwhelming desire to help people, and after relocating to New York, she continued her education and earned a degree as a Registered Nurse, specializing in Geriatrics from Brooklyn Jewish Hospital School of Nursing. She retired from Lawrence Nursing Center as the Assistant Director of Nursing in 2003.

She was a dedicated and faithful member of Holy Ghost Headquarters Prayer Band Mission Church in Far Rockaway, New York. Whenever her health permitted, she would attend services at Friendship Temple and Friendship Cathedral when she was in Virginia.

Sherry was preceded in death by both parents, a son, Forice Lamoar McFarland, two brothers, Marvin and Aaron McFarland. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, a son, Troy Devore McFarland (Nicole) of Portsmouth, Virginia; an adopted daughter, Saprina Brown of Far Rockaway, New York; step-mother, Vivian McFarland of Washington, DC, five sisters, Karen Denise McFarland-Hagins (Ron) of Portsmouth, Virginia, Diane Brooks (Leo) of Hayward, California; five brothers, Nathan Boston (Helen) of Compton, California, Delmar McFarland of Annapolis, Maryland, Gerald W. McFarland of Arlington, Virginia, Benjamin L. McFarland (Davina) of Bowie, Maryland, and Dwight Williams of Hayward, California; six grandsons, Shamique F. Williams-McFarland of Greensboro, North Carolina, Troy D. McFarland, Jr. of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Deontray McFarland of Portsmouth, Virginia, Tahj Cherry of Suffolk, Virginia, Nygel of Roswell, Georgia and Shamar Codrington; six granddaughters, Keeyama and Aloni Williams-McFarland, both of Greensboro, North Carolina, Tamesha and Anjani Cherry, both of Suffolk, Virginia, Shuziyah Brown and Derreca Bellanfantie, both of Far Rockaway, New York; two very special nephews, Ahmed and Atif (Demetrica) McFarland, both of Portsmouth, Virginia; great-niece, Keyama McFarland, two great-nephews, Kysheem McFarland and Daquan Gray, all of Portsmouth, Virginia; six aunts, Sallie Elliott, Nellie Lewis and Essie Cooper, all of Portsmouth, Virginia, Mary Gray of Hyattsville, Maryland, Ethel Allen of Emporia, Virginia and Elsie Moore of Moreno Valley, California; a devoted and loving church family; a host of relatives, friends and extended family

LUELLA A. BODDIE

Chesapeake - On July 21, 2007, the holy angels in heaven called the name of Luella Allen Boddie, 88, of the 3000 block of Sir Meliot, to eternal rest. She was born to the late John and Lourinda Pulley Allen on June 7, 1919 in Spring Hope, NC (Nash County). She was also preceded in death by her husband, Emmitt Boddie, Sr.

She leaves to cherish her memory three sons; Emmitt Boddie, Jr., Vic Boddie, Sr. (Burnette), Bobby Boddie (Harriett), four daughters; Peggy King, Colette Copeland Harrison (Michael), Betty Smith (Melvin) and Trina Boddie. Also left to cherish her memory are grandchildren, great grand children, great great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be held on Wednesday, July, 25, 2007 from noon until 5:00 pm at J. T. Fisher Funeral Services located at 1080 N George Washington Hwy., Chesapeake. A life celebration service will be held on Thursday, July 26, 2007 at 11:00 am at Bethlehem Church of Christ Disciples, 939 Marietta Avenue, Norfolk with Minister Jeremiah Jones officiating. Chesapeake – Rohan Bailey, 39, of the 600 block of Gresham Drive departed this life on Thursday, July 12, 2007. Final care arrangements have been entrusted to J. T. Fisher Funeral Services. A life celebration service will be held on Wednesday, July 18, 2007 at 6:00pm in the chapel of J. T. Fisher Funeral Services located at 1080 N. George Washington Hwy., Chesapeake, VA.

PASTOR L. LORENZO AKINS

Portsmouth – Pastor L. Lorenzo Akins, 43, Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church West Norfolk, departed this earthly life on November 4, 2007 at his residence. He was born in Bainbridge, GA on October 7, 1964. He was a honor graduate from Norfolk State University with a B. A. degree in Psychology. Pastor Akins also earned a Certificate of Religious Studies from Evans-Smith Institute of Virginia Union School of Theology. He was a certified coach for the Pillars of Power Leadership Institute at Grove Baptist Church and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Pastor Akins was currently employed at Waste Management as an Operations Manager. He was preceded in death by his mother, Rosa Mae Akins Levens and his step-father, John Henry Levens.

Pastor Akins leaves to cherish his life, his wife of 22 years, Jacqueline, two lovely daughters, Ashley Shamekia and Lauren Simone; a devoted aunt, Lelar Akins; two sisters, Alice Edwards and Annie D. Levens-Morris; three brothers, Robert Akins, Kenneth Levens and Gregory Akins; a host of other relatives and close friends.

A public viewing will be held on Thursday from 12 noon until 5:00 pm at J. T. Fisher Funeral Services, 1080 N. George Washington Highway, Chesapeake, VA and a memorial service will also be held 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will receive visitors on Thursday at the home of Victoria Prince, 6209 Winthrop Drive in Suffolk, VA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Akins Family Memorial Fund in care of Grove Baptist Church, P. O. Box 6219, Portsmouth, VA 23703.

CHARLES LAMONT RUSH

Portsmouth - Charles Lamont Rush, 24, of the 200 block of Chowan Drive went home to be with his Lord and Savoir Jesus Christ on Wednesday, October 31, 2007. He is deeply loved by his family and was affectionately called "Deep C" by his friends.

He was born on November 9, 1982 in Portsmouth, Virginia. He was named after both of his grandfathers (Charles Rush and Charles Franklin).

Mr. Rush was a former member of the United Full Gospel Revival Center in Chesapeake, Virginia. He recently rededicated his life back to the Lord. He graduated from Deep Creek High School and attended Aviation Institute of Maintenance in Virginia where he received his Bachelors in Aviation Science. He was also a U.S. Air Force Disabled Gulf War Veteran.

He was predeceased by his grandfather, Charles Rush and a step-grandfather, Lawrence Litton.

He leaves to cherish his memories his mother, Meta D. Rush-Brown, his step-dad, Kenneth W. Brown, Sr., his father, Guy Franklin; sisters,

Raena D. Rush of Portsmouth and Michele-la Hamlin of Norfolk; brothers, Darius D. Rush and Lloyd J. Harris; two grandmothers, Jessie Mae Rush and Ruby Mincey (Danny); grandfather, Charles Franklin; nieces and nephews, Reshaun, Bre’Aunna, Ty’Aunna, Chashaun and Sejaida; a beloved fiancé, Shauntrell Saunders; and many, many aunts, cousins, and friends.

Viewing will be held on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 from 12:00 p.m. until 8:00pm at J. T. Fisher Funeral Services, 1080 N. George Washington Hwy., Chesapeake. A life celebration service will be held on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 at 12:00 noon at Solid Rock Baptist Church, 1340 Gust Lane, Chesapeake. ELSIE MAE BOONE JOHNSON

Portsmouth – Elsie Mae Boone Johnson also known as “Sister”, 70, of the 1500 block of Leckie Street was called home to be with the Lord on November 2, 2007. She was born in Gates, North Carolina and was a retired food service worker for Portsmouth Public Schools. She was a member of Rose of Sharon United Church in Suffolk.

Mrs. Johnson was predeceased by her husband, Cyrus M. Johnson; her father, Jack Boone; a sister-in-law, Sally Mary Sims; and a brother-in-law, Wilbur Johnson. She leaves to cherish her memory her mother, Dessie Boone Coston, two daughters, Diane Trusty (Donald) and Evelyn Campbell (Roosevelt) both of Portsmouth, VA; six sons, Lavane Johnson (Mary), Cyrus Johnson, Jr. (Ada), Norris Johnson (Phyliss) all of Portsmouth, VA; Floyd W. Johnson (Shelia) of Chesapeake, VA; Rickey Johnson (Angelica) and Eric Johnson both of Tuscaloosa, AL.

She also leaves to cherish her memory four sisters, Doris Adell Cross of Gates, NC, Mildred Dillard and Kathryn Hampton both of Portsmouth, VA, and Nell Smith (Alvin) of Colorado Springs, CO; two brothers, George Vernon Boone (Hannah) of Atlantic City, NJ and Clarence Jefferson Boone; five sister-in-laws, Hazel Lee Turner of Suffolk, Peggy Goulet (Robert) of Wise, VA, and Rita Brinkley (Benjamin), Bertha Gatling and Ellen Gatling all of Suffolk; three brother-in-laws, Kermit Johnson, Arthur Gatling, Jr. and Bradley Gatling; 17 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Viewing will be held on Monday, November 5, 2007 from 2pm until 7pm at the funeral home, 1080 N. George Washington Hwy., Chesapeake. A life celebration service will be held at Rose of Sharon United Church, 2440 Nansemond Pkwy., Suffolk on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 at 11:00am. Burial will take place at Boone Family Cemetery in Gates County, NC. The family will assemble at 1601 Spratley Street, Portsmouth, at 10:00am. Final care arrangements have been entrusted to J. T. Portsmouth - Herbert Harrell Jr, 69, of the 1000 block of Hodges Ferry Road, was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 27, 2007. Mr. Harrell was born in Portsmouth, VA on April 18, 1938. He attended and graduated from I. C. Norcom High School in Portsmouth. After graduating, Mr. Harrell moved to New York City where he worked with the New York City Transit for 20 years. He later moved back to Portsmouth where he worked as a school crossing guard until his death.

He leaves to cherish his memories wife, Annie Hart Harrell; seven children by a previous marriage, 20 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. A life celebration service will be held 11:00am on Saturday, November 3, 2007 at J. T. Fisher Funeral Services located at 1080 N George Washington Hwy., Chesapeake, VA. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery. The family has entrusted J.T. Fisher Funeral Services located at 1080 N George Washington Hwy., Chesapeake, VA to handle the final care arrangements.

SHARON J. DILLARD

Chesapeake - Sharon J. Dillard, 60, loving wife, mother, and grandmother passed away peacefully, October 24, 2007, with her family by her side. Born in Princeton, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Leon Sckenck and Electa Ollivierre. Sharon retired from City Hall, New Brunswick, New Jersey and lived in Chesapeake since 2001. She was briefly employed at the HER Shelter as a Women’s Services Coordinator. A caring person, Sharon enjoyed gardening, cooking, decorating, and most of all taking care of her husband "Earl" and family.

She leaves to cherish her memory husband, Earl Dillard of Chesapeake; three sons Ronnie Wright (Aida) of Trenton, New Jersey, Wilford Wright Jr. and Adrian Wright of Atlantic City, New Jersey; grandchildren, Ronnie Jr., Basillio, Shakur, Sarrayah, Naji, and a special granddaughter, Melissa. Three step-children Earl T. Dillard, Salisbury N.C., Renna Dillard & Marvia Dillard, Astoria Long Island, New York. & six step grandchildren; Brother Bruce Parker (Mary) Somerset, New Jersey. Best friend & sister in-law, Diane (Roosevelt) Stephenson NJ, special niece Fran Dillard-Moore (Norman); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A viewing will be held at the funeral home on Monday, October 29, 2007 from 2 to 7pm.The family will be present at 6pm. A life celebration service will be held noon on Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at Solid Rock Baptist Church, 1340 Gust Lane, Chesapeake. The burial will be at Carver Memorial Cemetery, Suffolk. The family has entrusted J. T. Fisher Funeral Services; 1080 N George Washington Hwy., Chesapeake to handle the final care arrangements.
