Carlyle Broaddus Bowie, 68, of Woodford, in Caroline County died Friday, January 3, 2003 at Mary Washington Hospital.
Born in Mica in Caroline County, Mr. Bowie had retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center after 23 years, had worked at FMC for 18 years, a member of the Caroline Ruritan Club, a member of Caroline Historical Society and a member and past deacon of Bowling Green Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Mary G. Bowie; a son and daughter-in-law, Corbin and Lyda Bowie; a daughter, Ann Bowie of Woodford; and two grandchildren, Courtnie and Daniel Bowie.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, January 6, 2003 in the chapel of Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green with Rev. Jim Vaught and Rev. Kevin James officiating.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Bowling Green Baptist Church, P. O. Box 543, Bowling Green, VA. 22427

Peggy G. Eiker, 70, formerly of Caroline County, passed on Wednesday, January 1, 2003, after a 29-year illness with rheumatoid arthritis.
She was born in Caroline on June 3, 1932, the daughter of the late Lula and John Martin. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Roderick Gouldin.
Survivors include her brother, J. Stuart Martin and his wife, Jackie, of Caroline; and two sisters, Mildred Aguilar of California and Pearl Edwards of North Carolina. She also had many lifelong friends in Caroline.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 4, at Milford Presbyterian Church in Milford.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lula Martin Scholarship Fund, Box 96, Milford, Virginia 22514.
Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, is handling the arrangements.

Mary Purks McWhirt, 95, of Corbin, died Saturday, December 21, 2002 in the Bowling Green Health Care Center.
She was the widow of David D. McWhirt and was the oldest living member of Round Oak Baptist Church
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Alma and Roland Kish of Corbin; two sisters, Bertha Locke of Fredericksburg and Gertrude Dixon of Georgia; six grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, ten great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Viola and Mabel Thacker.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002 in Round Oak Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Newsome officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. tonight at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bowling Green or Spotsylvania Rescue Squads.

Jeffrey L. Carrier, 35, of Dawn in Caroline County, died Wednesday, December 4, 2002 at his home.
Survivors include his parents, Loran and Marjorie Carrier of Dawn; his maternal grandmother, Alma Carrier of Scobey, Montanta; a brother, Rev. Mark Carrier of Dale City; a sister, Genine Carrier of Dawn and a beloved niece, Janelle Carrier of Dawn.
A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 9, 2002 in St. Mary of the Annunciation catholic Church, Ladysmith, with Rev. Mark Carrier officiating. Burial of the cremains will follow in St. Cyril and Methodius cemetery, Woodford. A rosary service will be held Sunday at 5:00 PM at the church. Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green is handling the arrangements.

Mary Eliza Broaddus, 109, of Bagby in Caroline County, died Friday, December 6, 2002 at the home of her son, Woodford Bates Broaddus. Mrs. Broaddus was born August 24, 1893, at Peakes Turnout in Hanover County. She was the third of four children born to Christopher Columbus and Flora Temple Wright Broaddus. Her father was a veteran of the War Between the States. She attended school No. 7 and graduated from Barton Height High School with honors, and from there taught Latin and algebra at Atlee High School Until recently she had lived at her husband's homeplace, Taylorsville, since their 1915 marriage.
At her death, Mrs. Broaddus was the oldest member of Shiloh United Methodist Church where she had served as Sunday School teacher until she was in her 90's, as Communion Steward and was a very active member of the United Methodist Woman. She was a charter member of the Caroline Historical Society and a Real Daugher of the Caroline Gray's.
Mrs. Broaddus will be remembered as being a loving and an inspiring matriarch of her family, a devout Christian, industrious homemaker, gracious hostess, good cook, the best biscuit and roll maker, and having a great sense of humor. When asked on her 100th birthday for advice on living a century she said, "Take things as they come, and accept it as God's will." Her favorite qutoe is from Sam Walter Foss, "Let me live in my house by the side of the road and be a friend of man."
She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Woodford Silas Broaddus and her daughter, Mary Temple Broaddus.
She is survived by a daughter, Jean B. Hudson, widow of George W. Hudson of Richmond; two sons, Woodford Bates Broaddus and his wife, Jean of Bagby, and Perry Broaddus and his wife, Jean of Springfield; her grandchildren, Woodford Ennis Broaddus and wife, JaeYon of Spotsylvania, Gail Hudson Perozzi and her husband, Bruce, of Sumter, SC, Mary Frances Hunley and her husband, Danny of Mathews, Lynwood Broaddus of Bagby, Mark Broaddus of Stafford, Susan Huffman and her husband, Tommy of Bagby, John Carroll Broaddus of Bagby, Liza Shotwell and her husband, Don, of Palmyra; her great-grandchildren, Angie Broaddus Copp and her husband, Tim, of Vancouver, British Columbia, Jean Maria Broaddus of Seattle, Washington, Carolyn Perozzi of Sumter, SC, Stephanie Hunley of Newport News, Bates Broaddus of Bagby, Heather Hunley of Mathews, Joyce Huffman of Bagby, Laura Perozzi of Sumter, SC, Candace Broaddus of Bagby and Tommy Huffman of Bagby; a great-great granddaughter, Sydney Copp of Vancouver, British Columbia; several nieces and nephews; and caregivers, Rozelle Carter and Betty Rohm.
A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 8, 2002 at Shiloh United Methodist Church with Rev. Terry Clark officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 pm Saturday at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green.
Memorial contributions may be made to Shiloh United Methodist Woman, c/o Susan Huffman, treasurer, 24479 Mattaponi Trail, Milford, VA. 22514.

Mildred Jordan Newhouse, 75, of Alps, in Caroline County, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002 at her home. Born in Port Royal, she was the widow of Fred L. Newhouse, Sr.
Survivors include a son, Fred L. Newhouse, Jr. of Christiansburg; a daughter, Linda Williams of Milford; four sisters, Madeline Carter and Amy Tapscott of Richmond and Myrtle Fitzhugh and Lois Bryant of Bowling Green; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002 in the chapel of Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green with the Rev. Kevin James officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately following the service.

Shirlie F. Farmer, 73, of Bowling Green died Thursday, July 31, 2003 in MCV Hospital as a result of an automobile accident. She was the widow of Alvin T. Farmer, Jr. and a member of Bowling Green United Methodist Church. She was also a charter member of Order of Eastern Star #174, a charter member of the Caroline Junior Women's Club and had taught kindergarten for a number of years in Caroline.
Survivors include two daughters, Jody T. Farmer of Bristol, TN and Pamela P. Farmer of Bowling Green; three grandchildren, Ashley Wright, Cody Wright and Rylee Simpkins.
A graveside funeral service will be held Saturday, August 2, at 1:00 PM in Greenlawn cemetery, Bowling Green, with Rev. Terry Clark officiating.

Calvin F. Thornton, Jr., 72, of Bowling Green died Saturday, July 19, 2003 in Memorial Regional Medical Center. He had retired from Rappahannock Electric Co-op after 30 years of service, was a Navy veteran and a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Bowling Green.
Survivors include a niece, Susan Sili of Bowling Green, a nephew, Tommy Medley of Richmond, a great niece, Caroline Medley and great nephew, Jonathan Medley.
A funeral service will be held Friday, July 25 at 2:00 PM in Calvary Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn cemetery. The family will receive friends at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, Thursday 7:00 - 9:00 PM.

Michael W. Durrett, Sr., 57, of Montpelier, formerly of Caroline County, went home to be with the Lord Monday, June 30, 2003, at his home.
Born in Caroline, he was the son of the late Lewis Addison Durrett, Sr. and Lillian Bruce Durrett. He was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Winfrey Durrett. He was a beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia J. Durrett; four daughters, Carolyn M. Cox and her husband, Richard, of Bumpass, Tammy Bruce and her husband, Benjamin, of Ashland, Jennifer J. Durrett of Beaverdam and Amy R. Barlow and her husband, Kevin, of Bumpass; two sons, Michael Wayne Durrett, Jr. and his wife, Tammy, of Fredericksburg and Michael Dwayne Durrett of Montpelier; a stepdaughter, Sherry Lynn Bandy of Glen Allen; two brothers, Lewis Addison Durrett, Jr. and Bruce Durrett of Bowling Green; a sister, Brenda Kreeger of Ruther Glen; nine grandchildren, Rebecca, Richard Jr., Tabitha and Virgil Cox, David and Brittany Larkin, Jessica and Katelyn Durrett and Heather Barlow; two stepgrandchildren, Vanessa and Gloria Natel; a niece, Bonnie McKinney; and a nephew, Travis Durrett.
A funeral will be held at 2 PM Thursday, July 3, at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green. Burial will follow in Greenlawn cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Bernard E. "Pops" Carneal, 73, of Ruther Glen died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Richmond.
Mr. Carneal was born, raised and lived 72 years in Caroline County. He served in Germany with the U.S. Army and worked 35 years as a cross country truck driver for United Vans Lines and Hilldrup Moving and Storage.
Survivors include five children, Toni Phelix of Spotsylvania, Joyce Ray Doggett of Harrisonburg, Michael Bruce Carneal of Spotsylvania, Bernard E. Carneal, Jr. of Lawerenceville and Shana M. Carneal of Caroline; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Sue Carneal.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 19, at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, with the Rev. Charles Tillapaugh officiating. Burial will follow in Wright's Burying Ground, Ladysmith. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Wright's Burying Ground, Box 1, Ruther Glen, Virginia 22546.

Robert Wayne Thomas, 21, of Bowling Green was taken into God's hands by tragic events on Monday, July 14, 2003.
His parents, Sandy Satterwhite Thomas Gray and Michael Thomas welcome friends and family to celebrate his life in a memorial service at Travelers Rest Baptist Church at Snell at 4:00 PM Friday, July 18. ".....Fear not for I redeemed you, I have summonsed you by name, you are mine .....", Isaiah 43:1-5.
