Joseph D. Thornton, 89, a survivor of the Battle of Iwo Jima and a Washington, D. C. streetcar driver and police officer, died Tuesday, July 3, 2007, at his home of lung cancer.
In the spring of 1939, Mr. Thornton met his wife, Merle Poynor at the firehouse at Quantico Marine Base and July 1 they celebrated 68 years of marriage.
Mr. Thornton was a streetcar driver for years and could recite his route by heart. In 1940, he started work as a police officer. During World War II, he served two tours in the U. S. Marine Corps. He first served in China, and drove supply trucks through the streets of Shanghai. He volunteered for a second tour of duty, and invaded the beach on the island of Iwo Jima, living for days with no food, through ferocious gun battles. He was on the island for 26 days and on February 23, 1945 he saw the flag raised on Mount Suribachi. After the war, he returned to the police force. He retired as a private in 1966, at a luncheon also honoring multimillionaire philanthropist Laurance Rockefeller. Mr. Thornton had served as a traffic officer in the 14th precinct for many yeas, walking neighborhood residents across the busy intersection of Minnesota Avenue and Benning Road Northeast. In 1965 children of the Sunnyside Neighborhood Club wrote a poem praising him for getting the home safely.
After retirement, Mr. Thornton and his wife lived in a house on the banks of the Rappahannock River. For many decades, he daily filled feeders for the many hummingbirds, songbirds and squirrels who visited the yard. He was also an avid vegetable gardener. He is survived by his wife, Merle Poynor Thornton; two sons, William and Joseph “Sonny” Thornton; daughter-in-law, Pat Thornton; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, and many friends and neighbors.
