William Jennings Cox dies at 101
Jun 03, 2002
He often said the key to his longevity was plenty of exercise, lots of sleep and no liquor.
William Jennings Cox, who spent 30 years in education and was the first principal of the former New Kent County High School when it opened in 1930, died Friday in Norfolk. He was 101.
He took his first job at Charles City County High School in the early 1920s and served as principal while teaching chemistry and French, said his daughter, Anne Brown of Virginia Beach.
A 1922 graduate of the College of William and Mary, he earned a master's degree in international studies there in 1924.
After moving to New Kent High School, he continued to teach as well as serving as principal.
The current New Kent High opened in 1989.
In 1952, he left New Kent High and his education career. He moved to Norfolk and joined the state Department of Rehabilitation, retiring in 1967 as a district manager.
In his retirement, he had plenty of time for exercise. Brown said her father spent every minute he could engaged in gardening, bowling or golf and was particularly fond of crabbing near his home on the Elizabeth River with grandchildren in tow.
Though he had been in convalescent care in his last years, she said, he had not struggled with any major illnesses.
"He went out just fine."
Mr. Cox was the widow of Elizabeth Goddin Cox.
In addition to his daughter, survivors include a son, Edmund B. Cox of Blacksburg, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Virginia Beach.

Leighton Huske III dies at 63
Sep 16, 2002
With jubilant strides, Leighton Huske III walked the Lawn at the University of Virginia in 1994 as friends and family proudly watched.
"It was just an exciting day," recalled John West, who watched his brother-in-law fulfill his dream of earning a university degree.
It was also an unusual moment, watching a partner in one of Richmond's most respected investment firms with more than 30 years of experience in his profession standing giddy and eager in his cap and gown.
For that one afternoon, Mr. Huske was just another graduate in a sea of graduates. "A lot of people wouldn't choose to walk up and get that diploma with those 20- and 30-year-olds, but he wanted that," West said. "He relished that."
Mr. Huske, who was the last president and chairman at Branch Cabell before the company's acquisition by RBC Dain Rauscher in 2002, died of a heart attack Saturday after a day spent duck hunting. He was 63.
More than three decades before he took that long, joyful walk to receive his diploma, Mr. Huske had enrolled as a freshman at the College of William and Mary. His stay was brief.
He returned to Richmond to take a position on the very lowest rung of the very tall corporate ladder at Branch Cabell & Co.
As a chalk boy, Mr. Huske's duty was to scribble securities quotes on a big chalkboard in the investment firm's lobby. Customers used those quotes to buy and sell securities.
"In those days, you didn't need a [college] degree to climb the ladder," said West, who himself retired recently as president of Craige Inc. Craige is now part of BB&T. The industry, West recalled, was about rolling up your sleeves and getting results: "They wanted you to show them what you could do."
Mr. Huske did just that.
That sort of dedication extended beyond his 42 years in the financial industry.
He was a trustee for the Virginia Student Aid Foundation and the Historic Richmond Foundation.
Mr. Huske's survivors include his wife of 38 years, Anne Rawles Goolsby Huske; two daughters, Anne Gibboney Huske and Isabel Kyle Huske, both of New York City; and a sister, Janie Huske Satterfield of Richmond.
A funeral will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 6004 Grove Ave., on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Hollywood Cemetery.

William Knight, retired pastor, dies
He was police officer earlier
Oct 26, 2002
The Rev. William E. Knight, a retired United Methodist minister and retired executive director of higher education and campus ministry for the denomination's Virginia Annual Conference, died Thursday. He was 78.
Mr. Knight, who traded a career as a Chesterfield County police officer for the pulpit, was also a former superintendent for the conference's Lynchburg District.
"He was a very gentle person who made others feel at ease. Because he was a policeman before he was a minister, he brought a practical approach and a great concern for all people to the ministry," said Dr. Lee B. Sheaffer, former director of the conference's Council on Ministries.
The John Marshall High School graduate and Army veteran was a Chesterfield police officer for three years before entering Randolph-Macon College at the age of 30. He completed studies at Duke Divinity School in 1959.
He served a charge in Stem, N.C., before returning to Virginia, where he was first assigned as assistant pastor at his home church, Barton Heights Methodist. His other pastorates included Laurel Park and Chamberlayne Heights Methodist churches in Henrico, Chestnut Memorial United Methodist in Newport News and Windsor Hills United Methodist in Roanoke.
After a three-year assignment to River Road United Methodist in Richmond, he was named superintendent of the Lynchburg District in 1982, overseeing 98 churches.
In 1988, he was named director of higher education and campus ministry and served in that role until he retired in 1995.
Family members and colleagues said he was most proud of the large number of young people he brought into the ministry and the support he gave new pastors.
Bishop Joe E. Pennell Jr. called Mr. Knight "a pastor who retired but never quit and a servant of the servants" who took a special interest in fellow pastors struggling with problems in their congregations.
In his retirement, he played a large role in the establishment of the Goodson Academy of Preaching in Blackstone, Pennell added. That institution aids active ministers who want to enhance their preaching skills.
A former trustee of Randolph-Macon Woman's College, Mr. Knight served on a number of boards at the conference and regional levels.
He was a former chaplain for police departments in Newport News and Salem and more recently, he volunteered as a chaplain at Retreat Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Yates Knight; a daughter, Andrea K. Williams, of Richmond; two sisters, Eleanor White, of Tampa, Fla., and Shirley Hunt, of Macon Ga.; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Richmond.
