Maude Roseanne Yates

Maude Roseanne Yates, 92, passed away Monday, March 30, 2009 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Washington County, VA on June 9, 1916 and was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Yates, two daughters, Linda Booher and Reba Storey. and two sons at birth. She was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church for sixty years.

She loved everyone. A very special lady and will be missed by all. A good mom and friend to everyone.

She was the mother of thirteen children and is survived by Rosa Harrison, Bristol, TN, Betty Gaither, Merritt Island, Florida, Mary Steele, Princeton, West, Virginia, Georgia Cooper, Bristol, VA, John “Bill” Yates, Abingdon, VA, Charles “Rusty” Yates, Johnson City, TN. Margaret Barrett, Bristol, TN, Kathy Greer, Bristol, TN, Lue Rogers, Bristol, TN, several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, April 4, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Service Main Street Chapel with Rev. Bobby King and Rev. Jack Bowery officiating.

Interment will follow Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in the Yates cemetery. Those attending are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 1:55 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Johnny Dillard, Billy Dillard, Gary Dillard, Wayne Dillard, Will Dillard, Phillip King, John Holley, Roy Hayworth.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Home.

Mary Hale Edmonds

Mary Hale Edmonds, 95, passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2009.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack and daughter, Sue Arrington of Roanoke, VA.

She is survived by her family, Bob and Pat Fields of Mendota, VA, Ben and Glenda Edmonds of Bristol, VA, Joe Arrington of Roanoke, VA, Phoebe Houck of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, Jackie Edmonds of Denver, CO, 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Eva Nell Phillips of Castlewood, VA and brother, Bill Hale of Gainesville, VA.

Services for Mary Edmonds will be private.

Myrtle DeBoard Louthian

Mrs. Myrtle Geneva DeBoard Louthian, 82, of Glade Spring went to be with the Lord on December 1, 2008 in Abingdon.

She was born April 22, 1926 in Washington County and was a daughter of the late Stewart Alvin and Martha Washington McGlocklin DeBoard. She was a member of Joy Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton Louthian; a daughter, Peggy Jean Louthian Gill; a son-in-law, Elmer Creasy; a great grandson, Willie Browning; and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors are her daughter, Charlotte Christine Louthian Creasy; brothers, Carl “Bill” DeBoard and “Clum” Stewart DeBoard both of Pennsylvania; seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mrs. Myrtle Louthian will be conducted at 8:00pm Wednesday, December 3, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with the Rev. Richie Neese officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00pm until 7:45pm Wednesday at the funeral home.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00am Thursday, December 4, 2008 in Mt. Rose cemetery in Glade Spring. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Those attending the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff and nurses at Valley Health Care in Chilhowie for their special care.

Kathy Dianne Walls Holmes

Kathy Dianne Walls Holmes, 47, of Saltville passed away Monday, December 1, 2008 in Abingdon.

She was born January 18, 1961 in Washington County and was a daughter of Pauline Walls of Bristol, Tennessee and the late, John M. Walls. She was Deputy Treasurer for the Washington County Treasurer’s Office.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Tester, and her mother-in-law, Eileen Holmes.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, are her husband, Mike Holmes; her brother, John Walls of Bristol, TN; her sisters, Linda Ahmed of Richmond, Patty White of Sellersburg, Indiana, and Faye Walls of Blountville, TN; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mrs. Kathy Holmes will be conducted at 3:00pm Wednesday, December 3, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with the Rev. James Allen. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be family and friends. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:00pm until the time of the service Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association are preferred.

Betty Jane Edwards

Mrs. Betty Jane Edwards, 77, of Abingdon went to be with the Lord Wednesday, December 3, 2008 in Johnston Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.

She was born in Dickenson County, Virginia and was a daughter of the late Fred and Bessie Yates Sykes. She had spent the last 42 years in Abingdon and was retired from Washington County School Systems, working in the cafeteria at Abingdon Elementary. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Bristol, Virginia. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

She is survived by her loving husband of 58years, M. Ray Edwards; her daughter, Rita Price and husband, Dean of Abingdon; her son Jerry Edwards and wife, Iris of Damascus, Virginia; three grandchildren, Amanda Beth Price and husband, Josh of Abingdon, Ricky Wayne Edwards and wife, Erica, and Brian Wayne Edwards and wife, Holly both of Damascus; three great grandchildren, Joseph Edwards of Clifton Forge, Virginia, Alona Rayne Price, and Eden Grace Price, both of Abingdon; three sisters, Launa Mullins of Belleview, Florida, Christina Fuller and husband, Robert of Clintwood, Virginia, and Margie Gumm and husband, Bud of Gray, Tennessee; five brothers, Alvin Sykes of Abingdon, Elmer Sykes and wife, Faye of Palm Coast, Florida, Sherald Sykes and wife, Sophie of Alexandria, Virginia, Bobby Sykes and wife, Susie of Clintwood, Virginia, and Haskel Sykes and wife, Carol of Church Hill, Tennessee; special friend and caregiver, Sue Spivey; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends also survive.

Funeral services for Mrs. Betty Edwards will be conducted at 1:00pm Saturday, December 6, 2008 at Victory Baptist Church (11101 Island Road, Bristol, Virginia 24202) with Dr. Austin Cook officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon. Pallbearers will be George Price, Ricky Edwards, Brian Edwards, Josh Price, Joe Lusk, J.B. McReynolds, and Bill Murphy. Honorary Pallbearers will be Men of Victory Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends at Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon from 6:00 until 8:00pm Friday.

The family would also like to especially thank the nurses and staff of Grace Health Care and the 3rd Floor nurses and staff of Johnston Memorial Hospital for their special care.

Dolores W. Morefield

Dolores W. Morefield, age 70, died Saturday, December 06, 2008, in Holston Valley Medical Center from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on November 1, 2008.

She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, VA and a member of Glade Spring Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late T. R. and Ina Wright. She was a retired Purchasing Agent with the State Hospital in Marion, VA. She enjoyed craft shows, antiques, cooking, and loved cats. She had a great sense of humor and a great heart and was a very loving wife and mother.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, John C. Morefield; a son, Randy Morefield and wife, Alice of Chapin, SC; a daughter, Sandra M. Parker and husband, Randy of Bristol, Va. and special friends, Kenneth and Nancy Miller of Chilhowie, Va.

The funeral service will be conducted Monday, December 8, 2008, at 3:00 P.M. in the Glade Spring Baptist Church with Pastor Greg Hensley officiating. The family will receive friends at a reception following the service at the church. A private family burial will be Tuesday in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

The family would like to give special thanks to the Doctors, Nurses, and Staff of the I.C.U. unit at Holston Valley Medical Center for their loving care over these last few weeks.

Helen Henegar Williams

Mrs. Helen Henegar Williams, age 81, passed away on Wednesday, December 3, 2008.

Helen was born in Meadowview, Virginia on March 5, 1927. She had made her home with her daughter and son-in-law for several years after moving to Illinois. She was a daughter of the late Earl and Margaret Henegar. Helen was also preceded in death by her husband James E. Williams, her daughter Ada Darlene Thompson, her son Robert Wade Williams and her brother Sam Henegar.

Survivors include her son-in-law (who was also her caregiver), Ardon Thompson of Colona, IL; her granddaughter, Kimberly Thompson of Rock Island, IL; her grandson, Bradley Hoshour of California; her sisters, Bernice Millsap of Abingdon, VA and Ethel McCray of Orangeburg, SC and her brother William Henegar of Bamberg, SC.

The funeral service for Helen will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Tuesday, December 9, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 10:00 A. M. until the time of the funeral service.

A Memorial service will be conducted at first Baptist Church in Colona, Illinois on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at 11:00 A. M.

In place of flowers, the family has requested donations to be made to Genesis Illini Hospice, 801 Illini Drive, Silvis, IL 61282.

Arnold A. Kennedy, Jr.

Arnold A. Kennedy, Jr., age 63, passed away at his home in Blountville, TN on December 8, 2008, after a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold Kennedy and Vergie Potter Kennedy; one sister, Rosetta Kennedy Tulloss; and one half-brother, Rufus Ayers Kennedy.

Arnold was employed by Sears Roebuck and Co. as an appliance technician for 35 years. Arnold loved his work and his greatest joy was helping others.

He is survived by his wife and companion of 45 years, Judy Kennedy; one son, Stephen Kennedy; one granddaughter, Hannah Prater; and one great-grandson, Braxton Prater.

A graveside service for Arnold Kennedy will be conducted Thursday, December 11, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Pastor Jeremiah Sluss officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.

Pallbearers will be Jason Compton, Nathan O’Quinn, Larry Branham, Robert Swindall, Gaines Sutherland, Jr., Dustin Widener and Keith Willis. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Hudson, Buddy Fleenor and Greg Goins.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Tennessee Kidney Foundation, 4450 Walker Blvd., Suite 2, Knoxville, TN 37917 or to the American Diabetes Association, P. O. Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720.

Harley Van Thomas, Jr.

Harley Van Thomas, Jr., 29, of Rustic Lane in Abingdon departed this life Sunday, December 7, 2008 at his home.

He was born February 11, 1979 in Abingdon and was a son of the late Harley Van Thomas, Sr. and Lakie Doss Thomas. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Virginia. He had been a farmer all of his life and he was an avid sportsman who loved to hunt and fish. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Survivors are his fiancée, Rosie Worley of Abingdon; his brother, Harvey Thomas and wife, Kelly of Glade Spring; his sisters, Lucy Headrick of Glade Spring, and Brenda Tapia and husband, Hector of Chilhowie; a special brother-in-law, Raymond Headrick; a special uncle, Eugene Thomas; three special nieces, Brandy, Hope, and Stephanie; and one special little nephew, Christian Salone. Numerous friends and other family members also survive.

A graveside service for Harley Thomas will be conducted at 2:00pm Friday, December 12, 2008 at Mt. Olivet cemetery in Glade Spring with Rev. Tim Norris and Pastor Danny Salyer officiating. Pallbearers will be Tim Steffey, David Thomas, John Hess, Danny Owens, Charlie McVey, Ray McVey, Raymond Headrick, John Nickels, Dean Whitt, and Joe Eller. Honorary Pallbearers will be Bradley Robinson, Brad Robinson, Richard Jollie, Jimmy Jollie, and Michael Worley. Those who wish to go in procession to the cemetery are asked to assemble at Farris Funeral Service by 1:00pm Friday.

The family will receive friends at Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon from 6:00 until 8:00pm Thursday.

Ada Lou Thornsberry

Ada Lou Thornsberry, 84 went to spend her first Christmas with the Lord on December 10, 2008.

She started raising kids in 1946, became a full time housewife and raised six children with the last one being born in 1964. She was a ship welder during World War II, loved to dance, winning several awards and danced with Chubby Checker at the fairground.

She had attended Life Line Ministries for the past eight years. She will be missed by a host of family and friends and the many children from Mrs. Reta’s. She was preceded in death by her husband James Lewis Thornsberry.

Survivors include her sons, James Larry Thornsberry and a special daughter-in-law and caregiver, Loretta Thornsberry, Abingdon, VA, Garry Keith Thornsberry and wife Phyllis Thornsberry, Pikeville, KY, Tommy Anthony Thornsberry and wife Bobbie Thornsberry, Pikeville, KY, Stephen Wayne Thornsberry and wife, Barbara Thornsberry, Gray, TN, her daughters, Deborah Lou Stiltner and husband Johnny Jay Stiltner, Meadowview, VA, Linda Kaye Looney and husband Carl Wayne Looney, Grundy, VA, thirteen grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, December 13, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the Farris Funeral Service, Main Street Chapel with Pastor Darrell Martin officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View cemetery, Bristol, VA.

A service will also be conducted Friday, December 12, 2008 at 8:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home,

Pallbearers will be Michael Dillard, Adam Blosser, Tony Stacy, George Brewster, Arthur Plummer and Jeremy Mitchell. Honorary pallbearers will be grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ben Allison Heath
Ben Allison Heath, age 88, passed away Thursday, December 11, 2008, in the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center.

He was a member of the Chilhowie Baptist Church and was a Veteran of World War II, having served in the U. S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother Rube and Maggie Heath, a brother, Jesse Heath; sisters: Mary Cox, Edith Rhudy, Ruby Bosley and Grey Dishman; and his step-mother, Rebecca Heath.

Survivors include his wife, Mattie Trent Heath; two sons, Ben Allison Heath, Jr. and wife Lois, and Terry Wayne Heath, all of Bristol, VA; a daughter, Rosa Lee Weaver and husband Bob of Franklin County, VA; three brothers: Clarence Heath of Pennsylvania; John Heath of Glade Spring, VA; and Hurley Heath of Chilhowie, VA; two sisters: Shirley Cox of Pennsylvania and Ruth Teaters of Chilhowie, VA; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral service for Ben Allison Heath will be conducted Saturday, December 13, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with military honors to be conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Joshua Lyle Price and Precious Baby Price, infants, passed away Friday, December 12, 2008 in Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include the parents, Isaiah “Tye” Price and Paula Kaye Risinger Price, Meadowview, VA, maternal grandmother, Patricia Risinger, Arkansas, paternal grandparents, Tim and Connie Watts, Meadowview, VA, paternal great grandmother, Phyllis Helton, Abingdon, VA, maternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Parker, Abingdon, VA, two uncles, Kirby Price, Meadowview, VA and John Risinger, Florida.

A graveside service will be conducted Monday, December 15, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens Baby Land with Pastor Matthew Helton officiating.

There will be no visitation in the funeral home.

Harvey "Junior" Keene

Mr. Harvey “Junior” Keene, 77, formerly of Jolo, West Virginia was called home to Heaven on Monday, December 15, 2008, after a long and courageous battle.

He was born in Frankfort, West Virginia and was a son of the late, Harvey and Pearl Jackson Keene. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the love of his life and wife of 57 years Nellie “Kupy” Keene, one brother, and two sisters.

Survivors include one son, Hobert Keene and wife, Joyce of Mount Holley, North Carolina; two daughters, Ernestine Smith and husband, Lennie of Damascus, and Christine Parson and husband, Rick of Bluff City, Tennessee; one sister, Edith Ballard of Alexandria, Virginia; one special sister-in-law, Wilma Deskins of Damascus; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Harvey Keene will be conducted at 1:00pm Wednesday, December 17, 2008 in the Mausoleum Chapel of Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Virginia with Pastor Mark Davidson officiating. Interment will follow the service. Those wishing to drive in procession to the cemetery are asked to assemble at Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon at 11:00am.

The family will receive friends at Farris Funeral Service from 6:00pm until 9:00pm Tuesday.

The family would also like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Shelby Olds and her staff for their exceptional care.
