Roberta Sword Lawson

Roberta Sword Lawson, age 85, passed away on Thursday, December 25, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA.

Roberta was born on February 26, 1923 in Washington County, VA. She was the last surviving member of her family. She was a daughter of the late Melvin Sword and Harriett Cox Sword. She was also preceded in death by her husband Robert L. Lawson; her sister, Stella Webb and her brothers Russell Sword, Clyde Sword and Ralph Sword.

Roberta was member of the Washington Springs United Methodist Church and a member of the Eastern Star #151 of Saltville, VA.

Survivors include her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Peggy & Arnold McCready of Glade Spring, VA and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Sunday, December 28, 2008 at Mount Rose cemetery in Glade Spring, VA with Rev. Stephen McCready and Rev. Larry Lusk officiating. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Those attending the service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 1:50 P. M. Sunday. There will be no viewing or visitation at the funeral home; however anyone wishing to sign the guest register at the there may do so at any time.

Alma Bias Burnside

Mrs. Alma Bias Burnside, 90, of Abingdon went to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 25, 2008.

She was born February 7, 1918 to the late Gordon R. and Virgie L. Bias in Boone County West Virginia.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Newton J. Burnside; sisters, Mildred Barker, Helen Burgroff, Nina Stringer; brothers, William Bias, and Alex Bias; and grandson, Timothy Hardwick.

Survivors are her daughter, Sylvia Hardwick and husband, Jim of Abingdon; three sons, Rev. Joe Burnside and wife, Jeannette of Copper Hill, Virginia, John Burnside and wife, Nancy of Radford, Virginia, and Rick Burnside and wife, Andrea of Windermere, Florida; one brother, David Bias and wife, Deanna of Parkersburg, West Virginia; one brother-in-law, John Lyle Burnside of Hurricane, West Virginia; Seven Grandchildren, Alan Hardwick and wife, Lisa, David Burnside and wife, Edith, Jerry Burnside and wife, Amanda, Jo Ann Burnside, Christi Brummit and husband, Michael, Sara Myers and husband, J.R., and Angie Monhollen and husband, Chris; six step-grandchildren and nine great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services for Mrs. Burnside will be conducted at 1:30pm Monday, December 29, 2008 at King’s River Worship Center, 777 Mallory Lane, St. Albans, West Virginia 25177 with Pastor Ron Crum, Rev. Phillip Dunn, and Rev. Michael Brummitt officiating. Interment will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park in St. Albans. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 12:30pm until 1:15pm at the church on Monday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your local Salvation Army or Appalachian Teen Challenge, PO Box 980, Athens, West Virginia 24712.

Joe Wilson Mullins

Joe Wilson Mullins, 49, passed away Friday, December 26, 2008 in Johnston Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.

He was born June 16, 1959 in Abingdon and was a son of the late Woodrow Wilson and Ida Ruth Barrett Mullins. He had most recently lived in Bristol but was formerly a resident of Meadowview, Virginia where he lived with his aunt and uncle, Faye and Frank Barrett. He had worked as a diesel mechanic and as a truck driver, a job he loved. He was a new Christian and a member of Greenfield Baptist Church in Meadowview.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Benny Mullins.

Survivors are his brother, Michael Mullins of New Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; his sister, Elizabeth Stump and husband, Russ of New Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Special aunt and uncle, Faye and Frank Barrett of Meadowview, Virginia; Special Friend, Margie Keith of Abingdon; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

A graveside service for Joe Mullins will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, December 28, 2008 in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon with Pastor Thomas Capron officiating. Interment will follow. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. There will not be a visitation.

The family would also like to extend a special thanks to the Crossroads Medical Staff and to the Staff of Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Pauline Wells Elswick

Pauline Wells Elswick, age 87, passed away Sunday, December 28, 2008, at her residence in Abingdon, VA. A native of Russell County, VA, she had lived in Abingdon since 1972.

She was a retired teacher, having taught for thirty-three years. She was affiliated with several organizations, including lifetime membership in the Virginia PTA, membership in NEA, VEA, and Washington County Retired Teachers Association. She was also a member of Midway Baptist Church in Bristol, Virginia.

Mrs. Elswick was preceded in death by her husband, Kermit Edward Elswick, and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include daughter, Kimberly Crookshank; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Vanessa Elswick; step-daughter and husband, Shelby and John Whited; grandchildren Megan Elswick Larraburu, Maureen Elswick, and Pamela Lyons; great-grandchildren Lee Ann Kinder and Shaun Larraburu; sisters Mae Wells Ball and Ruth Wells Gibson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pastor Dexter Terry will officiate funeral services for Mrs. Elswick at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2009, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Entombment will follow in Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be friends and family. Honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of Midway Baptist Church and the Ladies Sunday School Class that Mrs. Elswick taught for many years.

The family will receive friends on Friday, January 2, 2009, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Midway Baptist Church, 21318 Old Dominion Road, Bristol, VA 24202.

The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to Mrs. Elswick’s gracious caregivers: Charles Roberts, Alyson Abell, Suzanne Goyette, Jacquelyn Helms, and Home Nursing Company, Inc. Home Health and Hospice.

Ida Belle Thompson Blevins

Ida Belle Thompson Blevins, age 88, died Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at Valley Healthcare Center in Chilhowie, VA.

Born on July 9, 1919 in Washington County, VA, she was a daughter of the late Fullen Andrew Thompson and Mary Blevins Thompson. She was also preceded in death by her husband Jacob Samuel Blevins and her sons, Jacob (Yokley) Hill Blevins and David Samuel Blevins.

Survivors include her daughters, Janie Compton and husband Barry of Chesterfield, VA; Mary Elizabeth White and husband Ray of Glade Spring, VA and Betty Jo Westbrook and husband Walt of Clarksville, VA; her sister, Ruth Ramey of Roanoke, VA; her brothers, Elbert Thompson of Spokane, WA and Clark Thompson and Dossar Thompson both of Perryman, MD; 9 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and several foster children that she had raised over the past years.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P. M. Saturday, April 5, 2008 at the Baptist cemetery in Glade Spring, VA with Pastor Bob Neace officiating. Those attending the service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 12:50 P. M.

There will be no public viewing at the funeral home. Those who wish may sign the guest register at the funeral home at anytime. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Mary White, in Glade Spring, VA.

The family wishes to give special thanks to the Staff and Nurses of Hospice of Southwest, VA and also the Valley Healthcare Center.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of Southwest, VA 301 East Valley Street, Abingdon, VA 24210.

Helen Prater Hale

Helen Sybil Prater Hale, 69 years of age, of Abingdon and formerly of Grundy, passed away Thursday, April 3, 2008 at her home. Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Ross and Opal Prater. She was a graduate of Grundy Senior High School and Pikeville College. She was formerly employed as a teacher by the Buchanan Country School System. She was an educator, an interior designer, a former retail store owner, an avid reader, and an animal lover.

Ms. Hale was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her only son, David Ross Hale, her brother, John Ross Prater, and her sister, Brenda Sue Saba.

Ms. Hale is survived by her daughter-in-law: Margaret Skeens Hale of Grundy, VA; two grandchildren: Charles Hale of Bristol, TN and Reece Hale Robertson of Grundy, VA; two great-grandchildren: Elijah and Elizabeth Hale; two nieces: Erica Prater Miller of Abingdon, VA and Jessica Lynn Davis of IN; three nephews: John Ross Prater of Grundy, VA, Christopher Saba of Abingdon, VA and Matthew Saba of Abingdon, VA; four great nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Helen Prater Hale were conducted Friday night at Farris Funeral Chapel. A committal graveside service will be conducted Saturday, April 5, 2008 at 11:30 a.m. in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock, Virginia. Honorary Pallbearers are Charles Hale, B.D. Robertson, John Ross Prater, Danny Miller, Christopher Saba and Matthew Saba.

Edward T. Spires

Mr. Edward T. Spires, age 83, died unexpectedly Sunday, April 6, 2008.

Mr. Spires was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina. His parents were E.T. and Ada Spires. He was a World War II United States Army veteran having served in Europe. He graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a B.S. degree in physics and from Sate University of New York at Buffalo with a MBA degree. He worked for Westinghouse Electric Corporation forty-one years retiring as engineering manager of the Abingdon plant. He was active in the United Way Fund of Washington County and the Washington County Chamber of Commerce.

He his survived by his wife, Caroline; three sons, Eric Spires and wife Denise of Columbus, Ohio, Steven Spires and wife Karen of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina and Mark Spires of Abingdon, Virginia; one sister Sara Spires of Spartanburg, South Carolina and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted on Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at 7 P.M. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. The family will receive friends from 6 P.M. until time of the service on Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the charity of your choice.

Arley F. Tweed, Sr.

Mr. Arley F. Tweed, Sr. age 87 went home to be with the Lord, Monday April 7, 2008 at his residence.

Arley was preceded in death by his wife, Cora Fields Tweed and retired from Crabtree Buick with over twenty years of service. He was a member of the Chestnut Grove Community Church and had served in the U. S. Armed Forces.

Survivors include two sons; Arley F. Tweed, Jr. and wife, Patsy Gail Tweed, Abingdon, VA and Gary Eugene Tweed, Abingdon, VA, five daughters; Josie M. Nunley and husband, William S. Nunley, Abingdon, VA, Hettie Sullins and husband, Carl Sullins, Abingdon, VA, Janice Musick and husband Bundy Musick, Blountville, TN, Cheryl Nineen Boyd, Midway, TN, Teresa A. Dupuis and husband, David A. Dupuis, Middleboro, Massachusetts, a brother James Tweed, Abingdon, VA and a sister, Bertha Kitchens, Abingdon, VA, twelve grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Counts cemetery in the Brumley Gap Community with Reverend Olen Cassell officiating. Interment will follow the graveside service. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. There will be no visitation in the funeral home. Friends attending the graveside service are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 1:55 p.m.

A special thanks to caregiver, Gayleen Reynolds for the love and care given to Mr. Tweed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Brumley Gap Volunteer Fire Department, 19287 Brumley Gap Road, Abingdon, VA 24210.

William Henry Brown

William Henry Brown, age 93, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at his home in Lebanon, VA. A Russell County native, he graduated from Lebanon High School and attended Bluefield College. He participated in two Civilian Military Training Camps during World War II. Mr. Brown retired as an employee of Appalachian Power Company - Clinch River Plant.

Mr. Brown's life centered around his family, and he enjoyed life to the fullest. Hunting and fishing were two of his favorite activities, and he also enjoyed picnics, woodworking and camping. He was usually 'dressed to the nines' and loved to tell a good story. Mr. Brown was a baseball fan and was one of the founders of the Lebanon Little League. He had served on the Lebanon Town Council and was a member of the Lebanon Baptist Church.

Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his first wife, Irene Jessee Brown; his son, Larry K. Brown; his step-son, William (Punk) Dorton; his brother, Walter Brown; and his daughter-in-law, Ann Brown.

His surviving family includes his wife, Elizabeth Dorton Brown of Lebanon; his sons: Dr. Ronnie Brown and wife Jeannie of Abingdon, and Dr. Bob Brown of Green Cove; his daughters-in-law: Nancy Brown of Abingdon and Lorraine Dorton of Lebanon; eleven grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his special family caregiver, Ruby Dorton, and other caregivers Ruth Layne, Ruby Sproles, Kim Green and Evelyn Dean.

The funeral service for William Henry Brown will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, April 11, 2008, at Lebanon Baptist Church with Pastor Tom Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in Russell Memorial cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Brad Stiltner, Frank Hanson, Larry Fleenor, George 'Sweet Pea' Munsey, Richard 'Whitey' Fanis, and Dan Asher. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Mutter, Russell 'Horse Fly' Garrett, Sen. Phillip Puckett, and Mike Puckett.

The family will visit with friends from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, 2008, at Lebanon Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Lebanon Baptist Church, Post Office Box 488, Lebanon, VA 24266.

Wanda Christine Wilson

Mrs. Wanda Christine Wilson, age 60, passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Virginia. She was of the Baptist faith and loved to fish and garden. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Ted Thomas and Bessie Maxwell Thomas, and by her daughter, Carolyn Ann Wilson.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Dale Wilson; sons: Billy Wilson and wife Janice of Lodi; Ronnie Wilson and wife Crystal of Abingdon; and Davey Wilson of the home; daughter, Cindy Whit and husband Keith of Crewe, VA; three brothers: Fred Thomas of Rural Retreat; John Thomas of Saltville; and Ed Thomas of Glade Spring; sister Eunice Bott of Glade Spring; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside funeral service for Mrs. Wanda Christine Wilson will be held at 12 noon on Friday, April 11, 2008, at Rush Creek cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. on Friday at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.

Oscar Cox

Mr. Oscar Burlen Cox, age 65 passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at his residence.

He was born in Meadowview, VA and had lived most of his life in Washington County, VA. He was a Baptist and was preceded in death by his father, George B. Cox, two brothers, Marion Lee Cox and Henry Thomas Cox, a grandson, Travis Jesse Freese. He was a retired truck driver and began farming on the family farm after the death of a brother.

Survivors include, two sons, Oscar Burlen Cox, Jr., and wife Madeline Cox, Little Rock, Arkansas, Jared Burlen Cox of the home, five daughters, Sherry Lawson, Bristol, VA, Sandy Manning and husband, Jerry Manning, Lottsburg, VA, Patricia Gissendanner and husband Jackie Gissendanner, Bristol, TN, Brandy Foster and husband, Brad Foster, Bristol, VA, Samantha Cox, Abingdon, VA, his mother, Georgia Kathryn Cox, Meadowview, VA, a step-son, Jonathan Randall Dalton and wife, Audrey Dalton, Bristol, VA, two sisters, Dorothy Clanahan of Mary Esther, Florida and Lois Wilson and her husband, Larry Wilson, Glade Spring, VA, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted Saturday, April 12, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Mountain View Baptist cemetery, Old Saltworks Road, Meadowview with Pastor Sherrell Dunn and Pastor Tommy Wilson officiating. Interment will follow the service.

Pallbearers will be Leon Smith, Doug McCracken, Joe Donald Necessary, Jerry Manning, Ricky Combs and Randall Dalton. Honorary pallbearers will be David Moore and Clarence Tedder.

Those attending are asked to assemble at the funeral home with the procession leaving at 1:30 p. m.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00-9:00 p.m. in the funeral home.

William Dennis Caywood

William Dennis Caywood, age 57, went to be with the Lord on April 9, 2008 at Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie, VA after a lengthy illness.

He was the son of the late William Lawrence Caywood and Ruby Hickey Caywood. He was also preceded in death by 4 special cousins, Oleta Jo Owens Donnley, Herbie Wallace, Ricky Caywood and Devonne Caywood.

Dennis was a kind and loving person. He touched many lives with his willingness to help others and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Dennis was a U. S. Marine Corp Veteran and had served in Vietnam from December of 1969 to February 1971. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with device, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal with a Letter of Appreciation.

Survivors in addition to his mother are his sister Bunny Caywood McNeil and husband David of Meadowview, VA; his brother, R. D. Caywood and wife Natalie of Ohio; his nephews, Joey Caywood and wife Sandy of North Carolina, Jake Caywood, Benji Caywood and Vlas all of Ohio; Chad Crane and wife Erin of Meadowview, Warrant Officer II Mark W. Crane, U. S. Army of Fort Bragg, NC and his wife Katie, step-nephew, Terry McNeil and wife Mandi; one niece, Sr. Airman Lisa Crane Arnette of Qatar; several aunts, uncles and cousins; his special children, E-6 Chris Melton and wife Mindi and Jessica Coleman; his special friends, Erica Bobbitt of Aide and Assist, Debbie and Bill Neese, Tom Capron, Frank and Dennis Snyder and families, Bobby Guien, Tommy Dutton, Moon and Georgia Mullins, Harley and Sandy Offield, his cousins, Jim and Joan Eller, Dianne Caywood and the second floor staff at Valley Heatlh Care Center.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Sunday, April 13, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Thomas Capron officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Highlands Fellowship Honor Color Guard. The family will receive friends from 1:00 P. M. Sunday until the time of the memorial service. In place of flowers, the family asks that those wishing to honor Dennis' memory to please make memorial donations to the Navy-Marine Corp Relief Fund, 875 North Randolph Street, Suite 225, Arlington, VA 22203.

Hubert Ray Neal

Mr. Hubert Ray Neal, 90, passed away peacefully on Saturday April 12, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was of the Baptist faith. He was the son of the late Lihue and Susie Dunn Neal. He was preceded in death by his son Pat Neal. He was an honorably discharged Seaman, 2nd Class, V6, SV, USNR with the U. S. Navy. He owned and operated Abingdon Cleaners and Launderers, Inc. for many years.

He is survived by 2 sons, Roger Neal, M.D. and Jack Neal, both of Abingdon; 2 daughters, Sandra Walters of Abingdon and Mrs. Jim (Debra) Cox of Dublin, Virginia; 9 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and 2 sisters, Rosie Lewis of Abingdon and Lillian South of Houston, TX.

Mr. Neal's wishes were to be cremated. There will be no services at the funeral home.
