Madge Jessee

Madge Jessee, 82, died Wednesday, August 6, 2008 at Valley Health Care in Chilhowie. She was born and raised in Russell County in the High Point area. She moved to Washington County in 1958. She was a straight-talking lady that loved embroidering and cross-stitching. She loved to cook and garden. She attended Bethel Baptist Church in Bristol, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Isaac Jessee, Sr. and her son, Bobby Gale Jessee.

She is survived by 4 sons; Conrad Jessee and wife Phyllis of Glade Spring, Kyle Jessee and wife Jane of Meadowview, Roy Jessee and wife Bertha of Glade Spring, Junior Jessee of Bristol, Virginia; 1 daughter; Angela Widener and husband Bill of Abingdon; 1 daughter-in-law; Susan Jessee of Meadowview; 13 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren.

The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, August 9, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Don Witt officiating. Burial will follow in Skeens cemetery in Russell County.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be the following granddaughters, Lisa Dotson, Jeanette Garcia, Shirley Dotson, Becky Ball, Cindy Deel, Becky Dillard, Betty Ledford, and Amanda Stewart. Grandsons Dewey Jessee, Daniel Jessee, William Widener, and Randy Jessee will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Katherine Irene Bull

Katherine Irene Bull, age 82, passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2008 at the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tennessee.

Born on March 5, 1926 in Maryland, Katherine was a daughter of the late Benjamin Noyes and Rose Howard Noyes. She had made her home in the Bristol area for the past 27 years. She was of the Catholic faith.

Katherine was a caring and devoted caregiver and friend who faithfully and selflessly gave of herself to the people for whom she cared and the pets she adopted. She was an avid bingo player.

Survivors include her sister Nancy Wilson and her dear friends Nell Lambert, Sharon Morrison, Larry Greer, Karen Cook and all of her special friends at Interstate Bingo. .

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Graham Norris

Mr. Graham Edgar Norris, age 68 passed away Thursday, August 7, 2008 at his residence.

He attended the Spoon Gap Freewill Baptist Church in the Spoon Gap Community of Washington County, VA.

Mr. Norris was preceded in death by his parents Edgar and Bessie Norris and two brothers, Herman Norris and Charles Norris.

Survivors include his wife, Eileen Norris, Abingdon, VA, a son and his wife, David 'Brad' and Ginny Norris, Abingdon, VA, brothers, Paul Norris, Harr, TN, Thurman Norris, Bristol, VA, Ernest Norris, Abingdon, VA, John Norris and Tom Norris both of Lenior, NC, a sister, Nora Branson, Bristol, VA, three grandchildren, a special niece that was thought of as a daughter, Nina Davis, Bluff City, TN, a special nephew that was thought of as a son, Glenn Norris, Bluff City, TN.

The funeral service will be conducted Sunday, August 10, 2008 at 3:30 p.m. in the Spoon Gap Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Herbert Bailey officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View United Methodist Church cemetery, Route 75, Abingdon, VA.

Pallbearers will be Paul Sweet and Men of the Spoon Gap Freewill Baptist Church. A special honorary pallbearer is Donald Williamson.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 2:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. at the church.

Curtis Blane Tate, Sr.

Mr. Curtis Blane Tate, Sr., age 79, died Friday, August 8, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Mr. Tate was a lifelong resident of Washington County and was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Kathleen. After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean Era, he returned home and worked for Pet Milk Company for seventeen years. Mr. Tate went on to retire from Westinghouse Corporation following twenty years of work. He enjoyed farming, collecting arrowheads and frequenting the Cherokee and Huddle House restaurants. Mr. Tate was also a member of the V.F.W Post #6975.

Mr. Tate is survived by one son, Curtis Blaine Tate, Jr. and his wife, Kathy of Abingdon. Two brothers: Coy Vernon Tate of Abingdon, Bobby Gene Tate and wife Constance of Bristol, TN, One Sister: Helen Yvonne Harless and husband Charles of Longwood, FL; One granddaughter, the joy of his life, Ashley Blaine Tate of Abingdon; Several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Curtis Blane Tate, Sr. will be conducted Monday, August 11, 2008 at 11:00 am in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service located at 427 East Main Street with Pastor Bob Neace officiating. Interment will follow at Knollkreg Memorial Park with military graveside rites conducted by the Highlands Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Phillip Mitchell, Curtis Tate, Nathan Tate, Phillip Tate, Curtis Musick and Ernie Morphew. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe P. Johnson, Fred Newman, Allen Asbury, Dr. James Gardner, Dr. Richard Gardner, Holiday McClanahan, Dr. Carey McKain, Ed Blevins, Fred Sullins, Kenny Sullins and Mr. Tate's friends from the Huddle House.

The family would like to express special thanks to the fifth floor nursing staff at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Dr. Sooklal, and Dr. Jim Gardner.

Pearl Bryant Shortt

Pearl Bryant Shortt, age 86, went to be with the Lord on Friday, August 8, 2008, after a brief illness.

Pearl was born on June 22, 1922, in Washington County, Virginia and was the last surviving child of George and Elizabeth (Hughes) Atkins. She had been a member of Woodland Baptist Church for 40 years. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Pearl is survived by her lifelong companion and husband of 57 years, Claude Shortt; she was a special mother and aunt to Valerie Thayer and her children, Kellsey, Kaleigh and Kolton Thayer. Additional survivors include several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Mrs. Pearl Bryant Shortt will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, August 10, 2008, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Bob McCormick officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Don Davenport, Lewis Orfield, David Bailey, Dale Bailey, Nelson Shortt, George Orfield, Kreg Thayer and Hobert Brooks. Honorary pallbearers will be the Men's Sunday School Class at Woodland Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 9, 2008, at the funeral home.

Mary Jane Shortt

Mary Jane Shortt, age 79, passed away on Friday, August 8, 2008 at the Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, TN.

Mary was born August 28, 1928 to the late George Franklin and Louise Manuel Hodge in Sullivan County, TN. She had lived in Washington County, VA since 1947 and attended Wyndale United Methodist Church. Mary loved to baby sit children. She also enjoyed working word search puzzles. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gilmer Ray Shortt, Sr; her son, Gilmer Ray Shortt, Jr; two brothers, George F. Hodge, Jr., and Maxwell Monroe Hodge; and one sister Barbara Grubbs.

She is survived by one son, Jeffery Lee Shortt and his wife, Cathy Statzer Shortt, Bristol, VA; two daughters, Hazel S. Kennedy, Abingdon and Pamela S. Fields and her husband Gary, Abingdon, VA; four sisters, Hattie Booher, Bristol, TN. Linda Humphreys, Bristol, TN, Wanda Faye Gill, Bristol, VA, and Jean Robertson, Richmond, VA; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mary Jane Shortt will be conducted at 6:00pm on Sunday, August 10, 2008, at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA with Rev. Amy Bartee officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. A graveside service will be held on Monday, August 11, 2008 at 1:00 pm at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Those attending the graveside service at asked to be at the cemetery by 12:50 pm. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Blackwell, Ronnie Grubb, Clinton Bailey, and grandchildren. The family would like to express a special thanks to the nurses at the Hospice House and Dr. Cowan.

Bobby D. McCormick

Mr. Bobby D. McCormick, 60, passed away Saturday, August 9, 2008 at his residence.

He was a lifelong resident of Washington County and was a member of the Mountain View Baptist Church. He had been employed with the Department of the Visually Handicapped in Washington and Wise Counties and retired from the Virginia Department of Corrections as a probation/parole officer with a total of twenty-fives years of service.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard O. McCormick.

Survivors include his wife of thirty-seven years, Jacqueline 'Jackie' Harless McCormick, Abingdon, VA, his son, Anthony Ryan McCormick and wife, Ashley, Johnson City, TN, his mother, Maggie Kestner McCormick, Meadowview, VA, his grandchildren, Bailey and Lily McCormick, special friends, Paul and Rose Riffey.

A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. in Knollkreg Memorial Park with Rev. Bill Denton officiating. Honorary pastor will be John Wesley Price. Those attending are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 12:55 p.m. on Tuesday.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Thomas, Gary Thomas, Jerry Widener, Jerry Webb, Ronnie Hicks, Chad Thomas. Honorary pallbearers will be Brian Barrett, James Barrett, J. R. Bowman, Daryll Thacker, Paul Riffey, and James G. Harless, II.

Special thanks to Hospice of Southwest Virginia, Naomi Barrett and staff, Dr. Jonathan Swank, Diane Wise, Dr. Paul Armstrong and a very special sister-in-law, Peggy H. Bowman. Also special friends, Carla Harless Marshell and Kimberly Harless.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home.

Sylvia Mae Helton Guinn

Sylvia Mae Helton Guinn, age 55, of the Blackwell's Chapel Community, passed away Sunday, August 10, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA.

Sylvia was born on August 7, 1953 in Washington County, Virginia and was a daughter of Harvey Helton and Helen Taylor Helton.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Roscoe Guinn; her sons, David Guinn of the home and Richard Guinn and wife Sandy of Meadowview; her grandson, Austin Guinn and several brothers and sisters.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Wednesday, August 13, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Sam & Loretta Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Rose cemetery in Glade Spring, VA. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12 Noon until the time of the funeral on Wednesday.

Pallbearers will be Timmy Morgan, Wade Jackson, Mike Johnson, Johnny Dotson, Denny Mitchell, Dennis Mitchell, Joe Guinn and John Guinn.

Beulah Elizabeth Porter

Beulah Elizabeth Porter, age 98, passed away on Thursday, August 14, 2008, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA.

Beulah was born on July 4, 1910 and was a daughter of the late Maggie Porter. She was a lifelong resident of Glade Spring and was a member of the Ebenezer Methodist Church.

She is survived by her devoted daughter, Estelle Beverly of Glade Spring; her son, Lucas Porter of Wytheville, VA; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her sisters: Jude Porter Skipper, Jean Porter Preston and Willie Porter Vannoy; and by her brother Pat H. Porter.

The funeral service for Mrs. Beulah Elizabeth Porter will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 19, 2008, at Ebenezer Methodist Church in Glade Spring, Virginia, with Dr. Jerry Jones officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow at Mt. Rose cemetery. Pallbearers will be family members.

Gary Wayne Baldwin

Gary Wayne Baldwin, 35, died Saturday, August 16, 2008. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County and attended Antioch Christian Church. He loved many outdoor activities such as camping and fishing with his daughters; and also enjoyed horseback riding, cooking, and 4-wheeling. He worked many years as a heavy equipment operator in the construction industry. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Frank and Anna Lou Gobble; and his paternal grandparents, Jim and Ethel Baldwin. Gary will be truly missed. He was such a good friend to all that knew him. He was always helping someone.

He is survived by his wife, Jenell Ferguson Baldwin; 2 daughters, Mekesha and Amber Baldwin of Meadowview; his step daughter, Meagan Garrett of the home; his step son, Jonathan Garrett of the home; his mother, Nancy Baldwin of Abingdon; his father, Homer Baldwin and companion Brenda Stowers of Abingdon; his brother, Johnny Baldwin and wife Tammy of Abingdon; his father and mother-in-law; Jimmy and Dorothy Ferguson of Abingdon; brother-in-law, Harry Ferguson of Abingdon; 2 sisters-in-law, Gleneda Sproles and Teresa Robinson, both of Abingdon; his nephew Zachary and niece Hannah.

The funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Hwy., Abingdon, Va. with Pastor Doug Findley, Pastor Jackie Church, and Pastor Clifton Duncan officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6-8 p.m. at the Forest Hills Chapel.

Pallbearers will be Keith Harless, Blaine Baumgardner, Monty Reynolds, Archie Gregory, Chad Hamilton, Mark Hamilton, and Earl Reynolds. Honorary pallbearers will be Gary's cousins, and Steven Sproles, Tommy Orfield, and Butch Robbins.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the family.

Mary Hahn

Mary Carlene Hahn, age 83, passed away on Saturday, August 16, 2008 at her home.

She was born on July 24, 1925 in the Meadowview community of Washington County, Virginia and was a daughter of the late Robert Hahn and Vernie Clark Hahn Barrett. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Charles & Lee Hahn; her sister, Frances St. John and her brother-in-law, Danny St. John.

Mary had lived the past 20 years at 260 Senior Drive in Abingdon where she had many friends. She was a lifelong member of Mt. Carmel Christian Church in Meadowview where she had a lot of friends that were more like family members. She loved her family and friends and they loved her more than anything.

Mary made friends anywhere she went.She was active in the Abingdon Senior Citizens Center on Monday& Wednesday, while Thursday was her shopping day at Food Country. Sunday she was off to church. She started each day with her morning coffee and making dolls that she loved to share with her friends and family.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Handy and his staff for all that they did for 'Miss Mary'.

God gave us an angel 83 years ago and on Saturday, August 16, 2008 God took her from us. It hurts us to let her go but God was ready for her. 'Buggy' we will all miss you very much.

Survivors include her sister, Ann (Wackie) Holmes and her husband Bud of Meadowview; her brothers, Fred Hahn and wife Cathy of Bristol, VA, Clarence (Fro) Hahn and wife Debbie of Abingdon; her sister-in-law, Ann Hahn of Nashville, TN; her nieces, Kathy Sasey (Tom), Melissa Edwards, Frances St. John, and Chasity Torbett; her nephews, Kenny St. John (Beth), Danny St. John (Gina) Robbie Hahn, Ernie Keesee (Sharon), Jeff Hahn (Susanna) Eddie Hahn, Josh Hahn (Renee), Jason Hahn (Tasha) and Joe Hood (Zeela); several great nieces and nephews, several great-great nieces & nephews and two very special friends, Dot (Mom) & Clifford (Meaness) Howley.

A funeral service will be conducted at 12:00 Noon Wednesday, August 20, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Jim Spence officiating. Burial will follow in the Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be her brother Clarence (Fro) Hahn, and family members, Kenny St. John, Robert Hahn, Jeff Hahn, Blaine Thomas, Clifford Howley, Bud Holmes. Honorary pallbearers will be her great nephews and great-great nephews, Tom Sasey, Dr. Handy and the men of Mt. Carmel Christian Church. The family will receive friends from 7-9 P. M. Tuesday at the funeral home or any time at the home of her sister, Ann Holmes.

Bill Hash

Bill Hash, 80, passed away Tuesday, August 19, 2008 in a Bristol, Tennessee hospital. He was born in Gaithersburg, Maryland the son of the late Edgar Jackson and Lydia Hash. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved pet, Russell.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Hash; two sons Jeffrey Hash and wife, Luann of Westminster, Maryland and Jon Hash of Abingdon; his daughter, Elizabeth Simmers and husband, Randy of Richmond; his sister, Virginia Vance of Westminster, Maryland; and his grandchildren, Jack Hash, Gabrielle Hash, Lydia Simmers, and Isabella Simmers

The funeral service will be conducted Friday, August 22, 2008 at 7:00pm at Mt. Carmel Christian Church in Meadowview with Pastor Jonathan Platt officiating.

Marshall Edward Grant

Marshall Edward Grant, age 27, also known as 'Little Marshall' went to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 21, 2008.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Marshall and Eleanor Grant and his maternal grandparents, Thomas and Inez Mann. 'Little Marshall' loved his hobbies of camping, fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Grant of the home, his son, Justin Porter, Castlewood, VA, his parents, Timothy and Gail Grant, Abingdon, VA, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jerry and Rosie Slate, Lebanon, VA, his sisters, Melissa Ashley and husband, Daniel, Angel McVey and husband, Charles, all of Damascus, VA, his brother, Junior Grant and wife, Terrilyn, Meadowview, VA, his brother-in-law, Jerry Slate and wife Tammy, Lebanon, VA, special nieces and nephews including Frances Grant, Corey and Trace Ashley, Caden Grant, Nikki McVey, Hailey, Kristen and Jared Slate, several aunts, uncles and cousins, a special friend, Joe Thomas, Saltville, VA, his very special dachshunds, whom he loved dearly, Jenny and Penny.

The funeral service will be conducted Monday, August 25, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the Farris Funeral Service, Main Street Chapel with Pastor David Matlock and Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethel Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Slate, James Tuggle, Kennis Necessary, Jason Thomas, Stanley Heath, Kelly Waugh, Kenny Collins, Corey Ashley.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
