Jeanne Bell Stokes

Mrs. Jeanne Bell Stokes passed away on Friday, August 22, 2008 at her home. She was born on July 22, 1928 to the late Grover Bell, Sr. and Stella Webb Bell in Sweetwater, TN.

Mrs. Stokes had lived in Washington County since 1960. She retired in 1985 from Dominion Bank-West State Street, where she was an officer of the bank. Jeanne enjoyed gardening, traveling and working crossword puzzles.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Thomas; special nieces Candi Arnold, Meadowview, VA, Sherry Freeman, Houston, TX, and Evelyn McConkey, Sweetwater, TN; a special nephew, Thomas H. Arnold, Bristol, TN; special friends, Barbara Chandler, Betty Stein, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lisanby, and Mrs. Thelma Buffalow.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, August 25, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. John Massey, Jr. officiating. Those attending the graveside service are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 12:50 p.m. The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 24, 2008 from 6:00 pm until 8:00pm at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. The family would like to express a special thank you to Wilma and Mich Arnold, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hayes, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Chandler, Mr. and Mrs. T. Harry Arnold, Johnston Memorial Home Health, Southwest Virginia Hospice, and Dr. Handy. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 246, Abingdon, VA 24212.

Clara Hinchey Harless

Clara Hinchey Harless, 88, of Abingdon, Virginia passed away Monday, August 25, 2008 in Johnston Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Ashe County, North Carolina and was the daughter of the late James Calvin and Tippy Elledge Hinchey. She had spent almost all her life in the Abingdon area and was of the Baptist faith. She had attended Pilgrim Baptist Church in Abingdon for many years and was a lifetime member of Palestine Baptist Church. She was always faithful.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur C. Harless. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She was a very special aunt to all of her nieces and nephews whom survive her. She is also survived by numerous wonderful and caring friends and neighbors.

Funeral services for Clara Hinchey Harless will be conducted at 8:00pm Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at Pilgrim Baptist Church in Abingdon with Pastor Doug Finley officiating. Friends may call at the church after 6:00pm until the time of the service Tuesday. A committal service will be held at Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon Wednesday at 11:00am

Leslie Lee Crosslin

Leslie Lee Crosslin, age 62, passed away Monday, August 25, 2008.

He was a U. S. Navy Veteran of the Vietnam era and was a retired employee of United Parcel Service with 34 years of service.

Survivors include his wife Janice Tate Crosslin; his beloved daughter, Regina Slaughter and her friend Joe Kite of Bristol, TN; his son, Bradley Crosslin and wife Beth of Knoxville, TN; his mother, Mildred Crosslin of Manchester, TN and his sisters-in-law, Carol Tate and Kathy Slagle.

The family will receive friends from 2:30 - 3:45 P. M. Thursday at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA). The funeral and entombment service will follow at 4:00 P. M. in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum with Leroy Hull III officiating. Pallbearers will be Jerry Patton, Jack Segroves, John Miller, Russell Cassell, Phil Robertson and Carlton Gobble. In place of flowers, the family has asked that memorial donations be made to the Wellmont Hospice Camp Caterpillar Grieving Children's Program, 280 Steele's Road, Bristol, TN 37620.

David Sanders, Jr.

David Sanders, Jr., age 84, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 30, 2008 at Bristol Regional Medical Center with his family by his side. He was born February 17, 1924 in Bristol, Tennessee, a son of the late Dave Scott and Dora E. Worley Sanders. He worked for the Brown Agency for many years and retired from Bristol Memorial Hospital in 1984. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II where he served in Okinawa with the 419th Quartermaster Truck Company. A lot of his duties included driving day and night under blackout conditions in mud and over all types of terrain. He was a life member of the D. A. V. Chapter 40 of Bristol, Va. He attended Gethsemane Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Pauline Vernon Sanders, who he loved dearly; 2 grandsons Chris A. Booher and Jeffery Scott; 2 sisters and 4 brothers.

He is survived by 2 daughters, Barbara Gibson and Rita Witt and husband Billy; and 1 son, James David Sanders, all of Bristol, Va.; grandchildren, Paula Carver, Mark Booher and wife Treasa, David Witt, Steven Witt, Michael Witt and wife Jessica, James A. Sanders and wife Ellen; great grandchildren, Atlanta, Constance, NiCie, Trinity, Dalton, Dustin, Harley, Brandon, and one great granddaughter to be born in September; and one great great grandson, Colton. He is also survived by special friends Peggy Blevins and Howard Totten, 5 nieces, and friends too many to name, and his loving dog Shandy.

A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Pastor Jerry Russell officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Highlands Veteran's Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon. Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

The family would like to express special heartfelt thanks to Dr. Fred Greear for his compassion and care of their father.

Samuel M. Blackwell

Samuel M. 'Sammy' Blackwell, 69, went to his Heavenly home on August 31, 2008 at his home in Glade Spring.

He was born in Clinchburg, Virginia and was the son of the late James E. and Margaret N. Bordwine Blackwell. He was a U.S. Marine, an avid fisherman, and gardener. He was a retiree of the Virginia Department of Transportation. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Ross, Dr. Robinette and Staff, Lisa Bales, and the 5th floor staff of Johnston Memorial Hospital for their compassion and care.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James E. Blackwell, II and David M. Blackwell; his father-in-law, Frank L. Bowers; a step granddaughter, Ashley Brooke Sutherland; and two close friends, 'Nook' Ratcliffe, and 'Mick' Owens.

He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Mary Bowers Blackwell; four daughters, Sarah Sutherland and husband, Wade of Bristol, Virginia, Terry Puckett and husband, Shane of Glade Spring, Nancy Greer and husband, Tommy of Abingdon, and Judith Edwards and husband, Billy of Bristol, Tennessee; mother-in-law, Sarah Bowers of Glade Spring; five grandchildren; six step grandchildren; three sisters, Peggy McThenia and husband, Pat of Glade Spring, Patsy Johnson of Meadowview, Virginia, Debbie Heffinger and husband, Gale of Abingdon, and a special friend, Mike Shreeves. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services for Samuel 'Sammy' Blackwell will be conducted at 3:00pm Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at Glade Spring Baptist Church with Pastor Stephen Sneed, Pastor Stephen Byrd, and Pastor Greg Hensley officiating. Interment will follow in Old Glade Presbyterian cemetery in Glade Spring. Pallbearers will be members of the family. The Highlands Fellowship Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the gravesite. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00pm until the time of the service on Tuesday.

For those seeking tributes other than floral, memorial contributions to the building fund of the Glade Spring Baptist Church, 414 Monte Vista Drive, Glade Spring, VA 24340, are encouraged.

Julian Barry Crouse

Julian Barry Crouse, infant son of George Crouse and Crystal Neville, died Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at Holston Valley Medical Center.

He is also survived by his maternal grandparents, Joseph and Brenda Neville of Bristol, Va.; paternal grandfather, George Crouse, Sr. of Philadelphia, Pa., paternal grandmother, Lorraine Buhalo of Bristol, Va.; 2 uncles, Jeffrey Martin and Joseph Neville; maternal great grandparents, Adlia Succarotte of Bristol, Va., Mack Jones of Churchill, Tn., and Ruth Jones of Kingsport, Tn.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

James D. Skeen, Sr.

WESTMINSTER, Md. - James D. Skeen Sr., 84, died April 30, 2008, at the Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster.

Born Jan. 13, 1924, in Abingdon, Va., he was the son of the late Raymond and Lula Parris Skeen. He was the husband of Eula Norris Skeen, whom he married Dec. 14, 1946. He had worked in the maintenance department at Western Maryland College, retiring in 1962. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Independent Church, where he served as assistant pastor.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are children, Barbara and Alan Bare of Silver Run, Md., Lula and Skeeter Bowers of New Windsor, Md., James D. Skeen Jr. of Manchester, Md., and Donald and Darleen Skeen of Westminster; siblings, Brady Skeen of Chilhowie, Va., Mary Richardson of Damascus, Va., Roy Skeen of Bristol Virginia, Judy Dollar of Abingdon and Malcolm Skeen of Morristown, Tenn.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by children, Ronda and Wayne Skeen, and siblings, Pauline Miller, Hazel Richards and Peggy and Maurice Skeen.

Funeral services and interment will be held on Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Forest Hills Memory Garden in Abingdon. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Highlands Fellowship Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the cemetery Chapel from 11 a.m. until start of services.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 800 Wyman Park Dr., Suite 110, Baltimore, MD 21211.

Nancy Jane Plummer Thomas

Nancy Jane Plummer Thomas, age 52, went to be with Jesus on Thursday, April 5, 2007 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital.

She was born February 26, 1955 in Washington County, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband Dan Thomas, her parents Arthur Plummer and Pearl Price Plummer, her brothers Lester, Earl Roscoe, and Wilton Lee Plummer and her sister Netty Gay Connor.

She is survived by her sisters, Lilly Thomas and husband Bill Thomas, Meadowview, VA, Ethel Caudill, Meadowview, VA, Barbara Kestner and husband Jeff Kestner, Meadowview, VA, her brothers, Arthur Plummer and wife Thelma Plummer, Abingdon, VA, Troy Plummer, Bristol, VA, several nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews, a very special neighbor Mr. Elmer Wright and one very special best friend Paula Orfield.

The funeral service will be conducted on Easter Sunday, April 8, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Service Main Street Chapel with Pastor Tommy Wilson officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:00-9:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Friends may visit at the homes of Bill and Lilly Thomas, 14118 Brandon Drive, Glade Spring or Sherry Hartsock, 26464 Old Saltworks Road, Meadowview, VA. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Eric Taylor, Jeff Kestner II, Tom Sexton, Jimmy Mulkey, Howard Blevins and Eli Martin. Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Kestner, Bill Thomas, Conley Orfield, John Blackwell, Dr. Carey McKain, Oakley Sanders, Doug Morris, Jason Plummer, Jim McCray and the Nursing Staff at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

A special thanks to the 3rd floor nursing staff at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Sally D. Neely

Sally D. Neely, age 97, passed away Saturday, April 7, 2007 in Grace Healthcare of Abingdon.

Mrs. Neely was a native of Johnson County, TN, was a member of the Corinth Baptist Church, Laurel Bloomery, TN and attended the Centenary Baptist Church in the Sutherland Community. She had been employed with Lincoln Furniture Company in Damascus until its closing and was a cook with several local restaurants until her retirement.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Leonard Neely, two sons, Henry Neely and David Neely, a grandson, Johnny Bebber and a great-grandson, Andrew Creasey.

Survivors include her son, Robert Neely and wife Reba Neely, Abingdon, VA; her daughters, Doris Bebber, Abingdon, VA; Mary McClure and husband Dan McClure, Sutherland Community, TN; and Betty Younce, Moravian Falls, NC; nineteen grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

The graveside service for Mrs. Neely will be conducted Tuesday, April 10, 2007 at 4:00 p.m. in the Sunset Memorial Park, Damascus, VA with Pastor Robert Griffin, Jr. officiating. Those attending the service are asked to assemble at the funeral home by 3:20 p.m. Tuesday for the procession to the cemetery. Pallbearers will Rob Rambo, Tony Bebber, Donald Bebber, Gary Bebber, Robert Younce and Michael Younce.

There will no visitation in the funeral home although friends may visit the funeral home to sign the guest register. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Alzheimer’s Foundation, 207 Boone Street, Suite 1050, Johnson City, TN, 37604.

Cannie S. Leach

Bristol, VA - Cannie S. Leach passed away Monday, April 9, 2007, at her sister’s home in Bristol, VA. She was born February 17, 1919, in Russell County, Virginia, a daughter of the late Ira and Dora Stevens. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur L. Leach, five brothers and one sister.

Mrs. Leach was a former resident of the Xenia and Beavercreek Ohio area. She had retired after working 38 years at the Delco Division of General Motors. She was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Temple Church in Dayton, OH.

Survivors include her sisters, Mary Rasnick of Bristol, VA, and Hettie Farmer of Honaker, VA; her brother, Russell Stevens of Bristol, VA; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Leach’s family will visit with friends on Wednesday, April 11, 2007, from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon. The family will also receive friends Friday, April 13, 2007 from 6:00 – 8:00 P. M., at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3380 Dayton-Xenia Road in Beavercreek, OH.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 10:00 A. M. Saturday, April 14, 2007, at Beaver cemetery in Beavercreek, OH.

Dorothy Louise Murdock

Dorothy Louise Murdock, age 89, passed away Monday April 2, 2007 in Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Dorothy was born February 16, 1918 in Salem, Virginia. Dorothy was a resident of Grace Health Care in Abingdon.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday April 11, 2007 in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. John E. Massey, Jr. officiating. Everyone wishing to attend the service is asked to assemble at the cemetery by 10:50 A.M.

Roland Herndon

Mr. Roland Perry Herndon, age 89, died Thursday, April 12, 2007 at Grace Healthcare Center in Abingdon.

Born on April 11, 1918 in Russell County, VA, he was a son of the late Perry Franklin Herndon and Mary Evelyn Helton Herndon. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Nell Esther Counts Herndon and his brother, Ralph Herndon.

Mr. Herndon had retired from the U. S. Postal Service after serving as Postmaster for 30 years at Swords Creek Virginia. He was a U. S. Army Veteran of WW II.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, David and Brenda Herndon of Kingsport, TN; his sister, Helen Carlson of Bristol, VA; his grandchildren, Russell Herndon, Erin Herndon and Brian Herndon; his great grandchildren, Mary Herndon and Marshall Herndon.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:45 P. M. Sunday, April 15, 2007 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 P. M. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating. Entombment will follow in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Military honors will be provided by the Highlands Fellowship Veterans Honor Color Guard. Pallbearers will be Russell Herndon, Brian Herndon, Jeff Moyers, David Counts, Fred Gent and Bob Miller. Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Central & Western Virginia Office, 274 Hillsdale Drive, Suite 1, Charlottesville, VA, 22901.

Monte Helton

Mr. Montie Winston Helton, age 50, passed away Sunday April 15, 2007 at his home.

Mr. Helton was born August 12, 1956 in Smyth County, Virginia to Montague and Gertie Helton.

Mr. Helton is preceded in death by his wife, Jeanie Helton and his father, Montague Helton.

Mr. Helton is survived by his mother, Gertie Helton of Abingdon, Virginia, one son, Travis Helton of Saltville, Virginia, three daughters, Becca Osborne and husband, Nathan of Meadowview, Virginia, Melissa Thomas and husband, Jeremy of Glade Spring, Virginia, and Jessica Helton of Saltville, Virginia. Two brothers, Ronnie Helton and Johnny Helton and wife, Kathy all of Saltville, Va; Three sisters, Brenda Helton and Carolyn Helton both of Saltville, Virginia and Betty Jo Taylor and husband, Doug of Glade Spring, Virginia. Four grandchildren, Austin Osborne, Skylar Thomas, Madison Thomas, and Leann Woods. Special nephew, Eugene Ellis of Saltville, Virginia and several nieces and nephews also survive.

At the request of Mont there will be no services conducted.
