Woodrow Wilson Sutherland

Mr. Woodrow Wilson Sutherland, age 90, formerly of Dickenson County, Virginia, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, February 11, 2007.

Woodrow was born on December 27, 1916 in Haysi, Virginia and was a son of the late Wade and Nannie Sutherland. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who was loved by all his family and neighbors. Woodrow loved to hunt and fish in his golden years. He was a retired coal miner and had worked in the mines for over 38 years and was a member of the Clintwood Masonic Lodge for 41 years. He was of the Primitive Baptist Faith and enjoyed the beautiful singing and wonderful words of faith by the ministers.

Survivors include his devoted and loving wife of 70 years, Ruby Emma Sutherland; his children, Ronald Rhett Sutherland and wife Charlotte; Freida Ann Sutherland and Mark Wilson Sutherland and wife Linda all of Abingdon, VA; five grandchildren, Dr. Kevin Scott Sutherland of Richmond; Kimberly Ann Sturgill and husband Rick of Abingdon; Stacey Conard and husband Mark of Ventura, CA; Stephanie Brooks and husband Mark of Bristol, VA, Kim Roark and husband Jeff of Abingdon; his great grandchildren, Roby, Jacob and Charlie Sturgill of Abingdon; Noah and Emma Sutherland of Richmond; Shiloh and Shelby Brooks of Bristol; Grace, Katie, Benjamin and Isaac Conard of Ventura, CA and Caleb and Courtney Roark of Abingdon; his sisters, Gladys Sutherland of Haysi, VA and Jackie Keene of Oakwood, VA; his brothers, Boone Sutherland and Fonso Sutherland both of Haysi, VA; several nieces and nephews and special friends Steve and Tina Artrip of Abingdon.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 9:00 P. M. Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. The funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P. M. Wednesday, February 14, 2007 in the funeral home chapel with Elders Price Viers and Joel Turner officiating. Burial will follow in Russell Memorial cemetery in Lebanon, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Benny Sutherland, Tim Sutherland, Wayne Sutherland, Gary Keene, Steve Artrip, and Tim Taylor. Honorary pallbearers will be David Sutherland, Rod Taylor, Robert Kuchan, Fonso Sutherland, Boone Sutherland, Don Artrip and Denny Sutherland. The family wishes to give special thanks to his caretakers Gaylene Reynolds, Aid and Assist and Hospice. In place of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Cancer Outreach Foundation, 206 Abingdon Place, Abingdon, VA 24211. Ray Thompson

Mr. Ray Thompson, age 87, passed away Tuesday February 13, 2007 in Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Thompson was born November 27, 1919 in Pond Creek, Kentucky to the late Roy and Belva Thompson. He was a retired coal miner with 28 years of service. Mr. Thompson is formerly of Oakwood, Virginia. He was a member of Macedonia Church of Christ.

Mr. Thompson is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Oakie Diamond Thompson, one brother, Emmett Thompson and three sisters, Virginia Smith, Shirley Layne, and Ruby Keene.

Mr. Thompson is survived by three sons, Dale Thompson and wife, Wanda of Garner, North Carolina, Randal Thompson and wife, Glenna of Bristol, Tennessee, and Dean Thompson and wife, Patsy of Oakwood, Virginia. Two daughters, Sandra Thompson of Abingdon, Virginia and Judy Lankford and husband, Alan of Bristol, Tennessee. Three sisters, Joyce Ann Thompson of Chicago, Illinois, Dorothy Blankenship of Baltimore, Maryland, and Deloris Sizemore of Louisville, Kentucky. Nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive.

The funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Thursday February 15, 2007 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Dr. Don McGregor officiating. A private committal service will be conducted Friday February 16, 2007 in Clinch Valley Memorial Park, Richlands, Virginia. Pallbearers will be grandson and friends. The family will receive friends in the funeral home from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. prior to the funeral Thursday evening.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Lung Association, P.O. Box 1249 Abingdon, Virginia 24212.

Lois Jones

Lois Jones went to her Heavenly eternal home on February 13, 2007 after a long battle with cancer. She peacefully went to sleep with several of her family by her side. Born June 23, 1938 in Dickenson County, she was the first born of Eula Anderson and the late Wilson Anderson. Mrs. Jones had been a member of the Holston Valley Baptist Church since 1997. She loved her church and was very active while able to attend.

She was preceded in death by a son, Palmer Lynn Edwards (“Lynnie”); a sister, Nina Edwards; brothers, Cecil Anderson, David Anderson and Wilson “Alan” Anderson; and a brother-in-law, Jim Williams.

She is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Robert Monroe Jones of Abingdon, VA; daughters: Nickena “Nicki” Jones Stiltner and husband Jay of Abingdon, and Tammy Sample of Jackson, MI; sons: Randell Jones Keyte and wife Carol of Abingdon; Dewayne Edwards and wife, Beverly of Monroe, GA; Rob Monroe Jones, III of Livonia, MI; Palmer “Buster” Robert Jones of Cedar Bluff, VA; brother: Darrell Anderson of Abingdon; sisters: Brenda Rose and husband Luther of Meadowview, VA; Bonicha Williams of Murray KY; Margaret McDonald and husband Rex of Abingdon; Dorothy Cochran and husband, Ronnie of Abingdon; two special sisters-in-law: Victoria Anderson and Brenda Sue Anderson; a special great-granddaughter, 1 year old Hope Marie, who was such a pleasant joy to Lois during her illness; a host of nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters in Christ and many, many friends and numerous grandchildren.

The funeral service for Lois Jones will be conducted Friday, February 16, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Service Main Street Chapel, 427 East Main Street, with Pastor Paul Ketron, Pastor of the Holston Valley Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in the Holston Valley Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6-8 p.m. in the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Randell Keyte, Dave McDonald, Jay Stiltner, Hunter Fuller, Chris Williams, Jordan Anderson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Parlie Meadows, Pete Hubbard, Hunter Brown, James Ward, Rex McDonald, Luther Rose, Ronnie Cochran, Darrell Anderson and the men of the Holston Valley Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Outreach Foundation, 206 Abingdon Place, Abingdon, VA 24211 or to the Holston Valley Baptist Church cemetery Fund, 18396 Cleveland Road, Abingdon, VA 24211.

At the present date, Lois is in Heaven having a joyous family reunion.

Samuel Henry McCracken

Samuel Henry McCracken, age 79, died Thursday, February 15, 2007 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.

Henry was born on May 12, 1927 in Washington County, Virginia and was a son of the late Ace and Mary McCracken. He was a retired from the maintenance department with the Town of Abingdon. Henry was a U. S. Army Veteran and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include a sister, Sara Lou Lowe of Stanton, KY and special nieces Barbara Nicholson of Abingdon, Margaret Hicks of Glade Spring, VA and Debbie Campbell of Meadowview, VA.

A graveside funeral service for Samuel Henry McCracken will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Sunday, February 18, 2007 at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Speaker will be Larry Wayne Gobble. Those attending the funerals service are asked to gather at the cemetery by 10:50 A. M. There will be no formal visitation at the funeral home, however those who wish may come by the funeral home to sign the guest register.

Kathlyn S. Hunter

Mrs. Kathlyn S. Hunter, age 91, a resident of The Grand Court of Bristol, VA, died early Thursday morning, February 15, 2007.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Harold W. Hunter. Mrs. Hunter was born in Pittsburg, PA and lived most of her life there. She and her husband retired to Hudson, FL where they lived for many years prior to moving to Bristol, VA.

She is survived by three daughters: Patricia A. Hunter of Abingdon, VA, Karen M. Bale of Vernon, CT and Debra J. Devokaitis of Fort Mill, SC; her granddaughter, Kristy M. Miller of Harrogate, England and two great grandchildren, Kaitlyn M. Miller and Connor D. Miller also of Harrogate

A memorial service will be held at St. John Lutheran Church in Abingdon, Virginia at 3:00 P. M., Sunday, February 18, 2007 with Pastor Kent Peterson officiating. Tyler Pruitt

William Tyler “Coach” Pruitt, age 65, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, February 18, 2007, at his home after many courageous health battles.

Tyler was born June 3, 1941, a son of the late Everette Pruitt and his surviving mother, Frances M. Pruitt. Tyler dedicated his life to educating others and coaching them to be the very best they could be at whatever they chose to do in life. This was demonstrated by example throughout his career with the students and athletes at Patrick Henry High School, where he spent 33 years teaching and coaching. Tyler always provided a word of encouragement to any person he came in contact with, and he believed everyone was special. Tyler was a very happy man who led a simple life, loving everyone he knew and always making a positive difference in the lives he touched. Tyler was an accomplished athlete at Chilhowie High School and at Emory & Henry College, where he played football with the same passion with which he lived life. His most cherished accomplishment was his marriage to his loving wife, Helen – the love of his life. He also had a very special love for his daughter, Jennifer.

Tyler is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Helen, and by the light of his life, his daughter Jennifer Pruitt Nelson and husband Mark. Also surviving are his mother, Frances M. Pruitt; brothers: Eddie Pruitt of Glade Spring, VA; Donnie Pruitt and wife Paula of Wytheville, VA; Harry Pruitt and wife Dot of Poquoson, VA; sisters: Lucy Jones and husband, Jimmy of Saltville, VA, and Retta Conner and husband Ashley of Chilhowie, VA; Tyler is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews living throughout Virginia.

Funeral services for Tyler Pruitt will be held at Macedonia Church of Christ, 25350 Watauga Road, Abingdon, VA, on Tuesday, February 20, 2007, at 8:00 p.m., with Evangelist Michael McCoy officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. prior to the service; they also welcome visits to Tyler and Helen’s home located at 28424 Hillman Highway, Meadowview, VA. The committal service will be Wednesday, February 21, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at Knollkreg Memorial Park, Abingdon, VA. Those attending may meet at the church by 10:30 a.m. for the procession to the cemetery or may go directly to the cemetery if they desire.

Pallbearers will be Cecil Ratcliff, Tony Rector, Johnny Tolliver, Larry Tolliver, Chris Pruitt, Jamie Jones, Bradley Fleenor, Jason Tolliver, Andy Tolliver, Jackie Tolliver, Robert Pruitt, and Wayne McNeil. Honorary pallbearers will be V.T. Rector, Fount Taylor, Johnny Fleenor, Joe Tolliver, Jack Tolliver, all current and past coaches at Patrick Henry High School, all athletes coached by Tyler, all men of the Macedonia Church of Christ, all brothers-in-law, and all of Tyler’s friends.

The family would like to thank Dr. Baker and all other healthcare givers as well as the Glade Spring Life Saving Crew.

Charles Howard Trent, Sr.

Mr. Trent, age 93, was born and born again. He took his last breath on earth and his first breath in Heaven Sunday morning, February 18, 2007.

He is absent from the body and present with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Children and grandchildren; Dr. Charles H. Trent, Jr., (Elias), Strasburg, PA, William A Trent (deceased), Lura Cinda Gonzalez (Kim and Anthony), Bronx, NY and Katie Trent-Carrington (Stephanie), Abingdon, VA, great-grandchildren; Alvin Berkley and William Alexander Lomans, Chilhowie, VA, (Stephanie and husband Alvin), and Jessica and Destiny Gonzalez (Anthony, deceased), niece, Patricia Hayes, Glade Spring, VA, grand nephew, Sedrick Hayes (Cheryl), Salem, VA, He also leaves behind additional nephews, grand nephews, grand nieces, and a host of other relatives.

Celebration of the everlasting life he had and has will begin Tuesday evening, February 20, 2007 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home and conclude on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 with the final service beginning at 1:00 p. m. in the Farris Funeral Home, Main Street Chapel with Rev. William Austin, Pastor John Stapleton and Dr. William Weldon officiating.

Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with military honors to be conducted by Highlands Fellowship Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Bradley, Gary Coleman, Randy Camper, Ollie Cox, Lucius Earls, George Fullen, Sedrick Hayes and John Puckett.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ralph Coffey, Teddy Summitt and Lemuel Wheeler.

John Wesley Shelton, Jr.

The Rev. John Wesley Shelton, Jr went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 19, 2007.
Rev Shelton was an associate Minister at the New Hope Baptist Church, Bristol, VA, were he served faithfully for several years.

His is preceded in death by his father John W. Shelton, Sr. Mother Evelyn B. Shelton, sister Elta Mae Shelton-Wright.

He is survived by his wife Lois O. Shelton, two daughters, Onita Smith, Milford, DE, Johnice Knight & Son-in-Law Dwayne Knight, Fishers, IN, one son Joel Howard & Daughter-in-law Nellie Howard, Houston, TX, God-daughter, Angela Reynolds, Hamden, CT. One sister, Elizabeth Shelton- Geary, Yeadon, PA, one brother, Sylvester Shelton and sister-in-law Audrey Shelton, New Haven, CT, one niece dear to his heart Jennifer Morgan & husband Clayton Edward Morgan, of Lewes, DE. He also leaves to mourn 9 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews.

The homegoing service will be held at Farris Funeral Service, Main Street Chapel on Thursday, February 22, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. W. J. Reid officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from noon until 2:00 p. m. Thursday in the funeral home.

Carolyn Ann Corcoran Koller

Carolyn Ann Corcoran Koller, 47, passed away unexpectedly on February 17, 2007 in Alexandria, VA. She was a 1977 graduate of Abingdon High School; she earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Roanoke College and a doctorate degree from Virginia Commonwealth University.

In recent years, Carolyn renewed her lifelong interest in opera and performed as a soprano in many Washington area venues, including the Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap, and the Washington National Cathedral. For several years she was a member of the Cathedral Choral Society, where she was a soloist in the 2002 Joy of Christmas concert, which was broadcast on National Public Radio. In November of 2006, she performed with the Espresso Opera Company of New York City in the role of Desdemona in Verdi’s Otello. She was a winner of the 2006 Montpelier Classical Recital Competition in Laurel, Maryland and performed a recital at the Festival in October, 2006. In 2004, she was a featured guest artist at the Virginia Highlands Festival of the Arts in Abingdon, VA.

She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Hodges, and Mr. and Mrs. William Dennis Corcoran. She is survived by her parents, Gloria and Bill Corcoran of Abingdon, VA; two sisters, Jennifer Corcoran of Greensboro, NC, and Melissa Corcoran Pearson of Nashville, TN; her niece and nephew, Jessica and Alex Dolianitis, both of Greensboro, NC; her aunt and uncle, Carolyn and Bob Hahn of Wadsworth, OH; her three cousins, Tara Wegner and her husband Chuck, of Del Mar, CA; Mia O’Connor of Wadsworth, OH; and Rob Hahn and his wife Joanne, of Wadsworth, OH. She is also survived by her very best friend Robert W. Woody, who, with his love and support of Carolyn, will always be a member of the Corcoran family.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 23 at 1:00 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Abingdon, VA with Pastor Kent Peterson officiating. Relatives and friends will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church immediately following the services. A private interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Johnnie Clark Osborne

Mr. Johnnie Clark Osborne, age 80 went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 20, 2007 at Valley Healthcare Center, Chilhowie, VA. Mr. Osborne was born on June 23, 1926 and was a son of the late Claude and Stella (Rhudy) Osborne. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Mae (Calhoun) Osborne and several brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his son, Johnnie Osborne and wife, Alice of Glade Spring; daughters, Debbie Blevins and husband, Bob of Glade Spring and Edy Pratt of Frederick, MD; brothers, Jessee Frank Osborne of Appomattox, VA and Billie Osborne, St. Augustine, FL; sisters, Nellie Watson of Chilhowie, Margaret Orr of Glade Spring, and Dorothy Forrester of St. Augustine, FL; grandchildren, Cristie Blevins Lester and husband Jason, Jenny Capeta and husband Tommy, Danielle Colley, Jordan Osborne, Madison Osborne and great granddaughter Hannah Capeta.

The funeral service for Mr. Johnnie Clark Osborne will be held Wednesday, February 21, 2007 at 7:00 pm at the Farris Funeral Service, Main Street Chapel with Reverend Billy Hawkins officiating. The committal service will be held Thursday, February 22, 2007 at 11:00 AM at Mt. View United Methodist Church cemetery in Chilhowie, VA. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until the time of service on Wednesday at the funeral home and also any time at the home of his son, Johnnie Osborne, 42143 Ramblewood Drive in Glade Spring.

Active pallbearers will be Jordan Osborne, Jason Lester, Tommy Capeta, Keith Hamilton, Dave Eastridge, and Tim Jones. Honorary pallbearers will be Bobby Harris, James Helton, Jr., Roland Lester and John Watson.

Hubert "Mike" Counts

Hubert “Mike” Counts was suddenly called to heaven on Monday, February 19, 2007.

Mike was preceded in death by his son, Jason Michael Counts, and by his mother and father, Mary Hockett Counts and Hubert M. Counts. He was also preceded in death by one sister-in-law, Shirley Self and her husband, Frank; and by one brother-in-law, Robert Winebarger.

Mike is survived by his wife of 37 years, Wanda Counts; his daughter, Michelle Counts of Abingdon; and one sister, Jewell Caudill and husband Bill of Abingdon. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Lois Repper of Boynton Beach, FL, and Fonda Waldron and husband Herb of West Palm Beach, FL; two brothers-in-law, J. M. Winebarger and wife Judy of Abingdon, and Don Winebarger and wife Jeanie of Tyler, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mike was an avid fisherman and was a coach for Abingdon Little League and Senior League baseball for several years. He attended Shelby Street Church of God in Bristol, TN, and was employed by Bristol Bag Company.

A celebration of the life of Mike Counts will be held on Thursday, February 22, 2007, at Farris Funeral Service, Main Street Chapel. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:45 p.m. Pastor Darrell Bewley will lead the main celebration at 8:00 p.m. Graveside services will be held on Friday morning, February 23, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at Mountain View United Methodist cemetery on Route 75 in Abingdon. Those who wish may meet at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. Friday for a procession to the cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Ben Sanders, Nick Infante, Rocky Ball, Claude Hollaway, Jimmy Moore, Tom Barker, June Roark and Teddy Ray Price. Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Wood, Lynn Hockett, Jeff Scott, Joe Kennedy, Vince Repper, Jackie Fleenor, Allen Riffey, Roy Hampton, Harrell Erwin, Danny Wilson, Dr. Forrest Swan, Gary Christian, Patrick Haverty, Russell Statzer, Josh Fields, John Summitt, Anthony Summitt, Jack Hill, Heagon Winebarger, Tim Winebarger, Brian Winebarger, Mark Copley, Dale Hockett, James Hockett, Roger Hockett, Danny Hockett, Billy Hockett, Marcus Street, Norman Johnson, Roger Copenhaver, Johnny Fennell, Kenneth Hughes, Kirk Repper, Bill Self, Mike Self, Jamie Winebarger, and John Pawleski.
