Margaret Elizabeth Cadle

Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Cadle, 79, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, went to be with the Lord Thursday, May 10, 2007, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County, Virginia, and was the daughter of the late William and Glenna Tate.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Johnny Tate and Fred Tate, and by her sister Dorothy Tate.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, William B. Cadle, Jr.; daughters: Sheila Lester and husband Arvil of Bristol, VA; Karen Ball and husband Hunter of Bristol; and Helen Patzke and husband Lloyd of Meadowview, VA; nine grandchildren: Melissa, Tony, Marjorie, Michael, Amanda, Brad, Nikki, Jessica and Debbie; eight great-grandchildren: Hannah, Logan, Jenna Reese, Jackie, Justin, Allison, Clayton and Kimberly; her brothers: Lewis Tate and Danny Tate; her sisters: Lou Russ, Susie Helton, Martha Williams, Evelyn Creasong, and Barbara Helton; and special friends of the family, Sherry Hicks and Nickie Dillard.

Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Cadle will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 12, 2007, at Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon with Rev. Oscar Edwards officiating. Active pallbearers will be Aaron Hicks, Tony Williams, Brad Ball, Jason Rosenbaum, John West, Steve Hicks and Stephen Dillard. Honorary pallbearers will be Justin Greer and Dr. David Guldseth.

The family will visit with friends and relatives from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Friday, May 11, 2007, at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon.

Etta Gobble Glover

Etta Gobble Glover passed away Friday, May 10, 2007 at the age of 91. She lived most of her life in Washington County, VA and was the daughter of the late George A. and Octavia Y. Gobble. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Eugene “Gene” Glover and was a Christian. She and her husband Gene were owners and operators of Glover’s Cleaners for many years.

She is survived by a son, Alan “Tom” Glover, Meadowview, VA, a daughter, Donna G. Rector and husband Don Rector, Wytheville, VA, two grandchildren, Tracy Pauley and Don B. “Donnie” Rector, Jr., both of Wytheville, VA, and two great-grandchildren, Victoria Lea Smythers and Stephen Pauley both of Wytheville, VA

The graveside service will be conducted Sunday, May 13, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Pastor John Stapleton officiating. Those attending are asked to meet at the cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7-9 p.m. in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Washington County Life Saving Crew, P. O. Box 65, Abingdon, VA 24212.

Bernice Huff Garrett

Mrs. Bernice Huff Garrett, age 101, of the Cleveland Community of Washington County, Virginia passed away Monday, May 14, 2007 at her home.

Mrs. Garrett was born in Kentucky on January 17, 1906 to the late J.W. and Mary E. Huff. Mrs. Garrett had lived in the Cleveland Community of Washington County, Virginia since 1932. She was a retired school teacher. She started her teaching career in Bristol, Virginia. In early 1950’s she taught at Cleveland Elementary School in Washington County, Virginia and East Cherokee Elementary School in Sullivan County, Tennessee. She was a strong supporter of the Cleveland Presbyterian Church, Cleveland PTA and was a member of the Washington County Home Demonstration Club and the South Holston Community Club.

Mrs. Garrett was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-two years, Claude Ernest Garrett, and four sisters, Etta Childress, Margaret Carr, Odelle Darter, and Wava Pippin.

Mrs. Garrett is survived by one son, Lee Frank Garrett and wife, Grace of Abingdon, Virginia, two daughters, Mary Ann Moore and husband, Dr. French H. Moore, Jr. of Abingdon, Virginia and Claudia Garrett Sprinkle and husband, Wm. Malcolm Sprinkle of Abingdon, Virginia. Grandchildren, Dr. French H. Moore, III and wife, Laura; Drs. Marilou Moore Johnson and husband, George; Garrett Andrew Moore and wife, Janet; Alicia Sprinkle Arney and husband, Steve; Lee David Sprinkle and wife, Karalee; and Wm. Martin Sprinkle and wife, Amanda. Two sisters, Betty Huff and Lois McVeigh both of Bristol Tennessee. Twelve great-grandchildren, one sister-in-law, Mildred Garrett and several nieces and nephews also survive. Extended family for whom we are most grateful; Peggy Williamson, Kathy Whitten, Jo Morrow, Ella Mae Johnson, Mabel Brown, and Myrtle Jefferson

The funeral service for Mrs. Garrett will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Thursday, May 17, 2007 at Cleveland Evangelical Presbyterian Church with Dr. Frank Preston and Rev. Tom Musselman officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dr. French H. Moore, III, Garrett Moore, Dr. George Johnson, Steve Arney, Lee David Sprinkle, and Wm. Martin Sprinkle. Honorary Pallbearers will be Bucky Buchanan, Sam Bralley, and Steve Smith. The family will receive friends Wednesday May 16, 2007 after 6:00 P.M. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.

Myrle JoAnn Brodnick

Myrle JoAnn Brodnick, age 77, died Monday, May 14, 2007.
She was born in West Virginia and had lived in the Abingdon area for over 45 years and had attended the Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her husband A. J. Brodnick; her daughters, Candace J. Workman of Bristol, VA and D. A. Aldridge and husband Al of Jupiter, FL; her son, Gregory Brodnick and wife Sheila of Cedar point, NC and two grandchildren.

A memorial service for Mrs. Brodnick will be held at a later date.

Kenneth Goff

Mr. Kenneth Houston Goff, age 56, died Tuesday, May 15, 2007 as a result of injuries from an automobile accident.

Born on July 21, 1950 in Beckley, WV, Kenneth was a son of the late Samuel Wilson Goff and Easter Mae Shrewsberry Goff. He was also preceded in death by his brother Carl Goff. Kenneth was a member of Riverbend Baptist Church, a former little league baseball coach in Glade Spring and was a talented woodworker and painter. He was a U. S. Army Veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Kimberly Dawn Goff; his son Wesley Houston Goff of Abingdon; his daughter, Kendrea Lynn Goff Miller and husband Nathan Brian Miller of Abingdon; his step-children, Ashley Nicole Cook and Joseph Daniel Cook; his brothers, Samuel R. Goff of High Point, NC and Quinton Goff of Detroit, MI; his sisters, Dorothy Bolen of Coal City, WV, Christine Stanfield and Reva Eastridge both of Saltville, VA; Nora Roberts of Archdale, NC, Ruby Spencer of Glade Spring, VA, Wanda Wood of Elkhart, IN and Debra Goff of Goshen, IN; his grandchildren, Benjamin Isaiha Goff, Nicholas Dane Miller and Nathan Thomas Miller; several nieces & nephews; close family friends, Carolyn Helton, Brenda Prater, Buddy Joe Taylor, Gertie Helton, Ron Helton and Johnny Helton.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P. M. Friday, May 18, 2007 at the Valley View Assembly of God Church or anytime at the home of his sister-in-law Elaine Vannoy, 303 Mesa Drive, Glade Spring or his sister, Christine Stanfield, 4504 Adrian Lane, Saltville, VA. . The funeral will be conducted at 2:00 P. M., Saturday, May 19, 2007 in the church with Pastor Roger O’Quinn and Pastor Robert Wood officiating. Burial will follow in the Eastridge family cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Lawrence Eastridge, Charles Eastridge, Kevin Eastridge, Andrew Eastridge, Ronald Lee Goff, James Goff, Eddie Watson and Mark Watson. Honorary pallbearers will be Rick Goff, Ron Helton, Johnny Helton and Randy Boardwine.

The family has asked for memorial contributions to be made to the Brumley Gap Volunteer Fire Department, 19287 Brumley Gap Road, Abingdon, VA 24210.

Linda Ruth Wingfield Owens

Linda Ruth Wingfield Owens, age 53, died at Johnston Memorial Hospital Friday, May 11, 2007. Linda loved to do needlepoint and her grandchildren were the love of her life.

She is survived by her son: Sam Wingfield of Florida and her daughter: Ruby K. Beckner, Roanoke, VA; 3 grandchildren.

Services were private.

Melvin C. Snodgrass

Melvin C. Snodgrass, age 85, of the Hayter’s Gap Community, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 19, 2007, surrounded by his loving family.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years Virgie Nipper Snodgrass.

Mr. Snodgrass attended Valley View Assembly of God and most recently attended Riverbend Union Church. He owned and operated Snodgrass Repair Service for 20 years and was a well-known farmer and community leader. Over the years, he was actively involved in the Valley Rescue Squad, the Clinch Mountain Volunteer Fire Department and the Hayter’s Gap Senior Citizens. He also served as Coordinator for the Hayter’s Gap Community Center for several years and was instrumental in the development and implementation of the Progressive Community Club which is now known as People, Incorporated.

He is survived by one son, Kenneth Snodgrass of Abingdon; five daughters; Norma Taylor and husband Troy; Lois Shupe and husband Dean; Donna Rickman and husband Oaksey; Kim Hill and husband Glenn, all of Hayter’s Gap; and Geneva Mitchell and husband Hampton of Richmond, VA, 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Service, Main Street Chapel, 427 East Main Street with Pastor Roger O’Quinn officiating. Following the service, burial will follow in the Snodgrass Family cemetery on North Fork River Road in Hayter’s Gap where Mr. Snodgrass lived his entire life.

Pallbearers will be Paul Taylor, Danny Shupe, Michael Allison, Gary Louthian, Justin Louthian and Gary Buchanan.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Valley Rescue Squad or to the Hayter’s Gap Senior Citizens, 7712 Hayter’s Gap Road, Saltville, Virginia 24370 in honor of Mr. Snodgrass’ dedication and devotion to both those groups.

Samuel C. Gray

Mr. Samuel C. Gray, age 90 passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2007 in Valley Health Care Center of Chilhowie.

He was a native of Washington County and had lived in Maryland for 35-40 years and returned to the Abingdon area 25 years ago. He was a Veteran of World War II having served in the U. S. Army, serving four years in the Pacific Theatre. He was preceded in death his wife, Julia Gray, his parents, John Mack Gray and Nellie Harris Gray and a brother, Jim Gray.

Survivors include his son, Bobby Gray and wife Karol, Abingdon, VA, his daughter, Nellie Slater and husband David, Perry Hall, MD, his brothers, John Mack Gray, Maryland and Curtis Gray, Abingdon, VA, his grandchildren, Jeffery Gray, Travis Gray, Matt Slater, Christina Slater and Adam Gray, his great-grandson, Parker Gray.

A memorial graveside service will be conducted Thursday, May 24, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in the Bethel Presbyterian Church cemetery with Rev. Ricky Ray officiating. Military honors will be presented by the Bristol VFW.

There will be no visitation in the funeral home although friends may greet the family at the cemetery at 10:45 a.m.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Bristol VFW and the grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Alzheimer’s, 207 N. Boone Street, Suite 1050, Johnson City, TN 37604.

Debra Rackowski Christopher

Debra Rackowski Christopher, age 51, passed away Monday, May 21, 2007 in Boone, North Carolina.

She is preceded in death by her beloved grandparents, Margaret and Robert Vollriede and her dog Muffin.

She is survived by her parents, Anthony T. Rackowski and Susan Rackowski, one brother, Joey Rackowski of Abingdon, Virginia, two sisters, Marcia Lee Francis of Florida, and Margie Rackowski of Wilmington, North Carolina, three nephews, Thomas Richardson, Michael Richardson, and Jonathan Rackowski, an aunt, Marcia Cipriano and husband Vinnie. Also survived by a life friend, Wendell Johnston of Boone, North Carolina.

A funeral mass will be conducted Thursday, May 24, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church in Abingdon, Virginia with Father Paul Maier officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday, May 24, 2007 from 5:00 P.M. until 6:30 P.M. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 427 East Main Street Abingdon, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Washington County Animal Shelter, 27252 Porter Lane Abingdon, Virginia 24211.

Irene Fraley

Irene Fraley, 96, died Tuesday, May 22, 2007, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Miss Fraley was born in Washington County, Virginia, the daughter of Charles and Salley Fraley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters: Elizabeth Countiss, Eliza Sprinkle and Goldie Garrett. She is survived by one niece, Sally Bentley of Bristol; and by three nephews: Robert Sprinkle, Jr., of Logansville, GA; Rev. Jack Sprinkle and Bill Sprinkle, both of Bristol.

Miss Fraley was a member of Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church. She retired as a chemist from Edgewood Arsenal, the national center for research and development. She was a life member of the American Chemical Society.

Services for Miss Fraley will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 25, 2007, at the Knollkreg Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel with Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the mausoleum chapel. Pallbearers will be Pete Barker, Hubert Jones, Lester Wright, Larry Thomas, Bill Parsons, Charlie Gilbert, Marc Phillippi and John Mowery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11537, Alexandria, VA 22312.
