BATEMAN
John Preston Bateman, age 74, of Mechanicsville, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, July 24, 2002 after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jean Bateman; his children and their spouses, John G. and Sharon Bateman of Mechanicsville, Ronald F. and Donna Bateman of Marshall, Pamela and Tom Maciejewski of Richmond; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Bateman was a member of Grove Avenue Baptist Church. Remains rest at the Atlee Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, corner of 301 and Shady Grove Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, and where services will be held 11 a.m. Friday. BRITTON
Charles C. "Junie" Britton Jr., 86, a retired City of Richmond employee, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Alice K. Britton; his children, Barbara Britton Nunnally and her husband, Robert L. Nunnally of Highland Springs and Patty Britton and her friend, David Powers of Goochland; his sister-in-law, Helen Jeanne Keeling. Mr. Britton was born and raised in Church Hill. He was a lifelong member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where his mother and father and other family members attended. He was with the U.S. Army 604th Engineer Battalion during WWII, serving in Northern France, Rhineland and England, where he received two Bronze Stars. He worked at Parker Field for over 30 years and was an avid New York Yankees fan. He was a member of Northside Lodge No. 292 A.F.&A.M. and was also a member of the Musician's Union and a drummer in several local dance bands. Remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 East Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday. BROD
Fay W. Brod, 88, of Richmond since 1948, died July 24, 2002. She was predeceased by her husband, Harry L. Brod. She is survived by a daughter, Susan Neidlinger; two granddaughters, Sheina Renee and Hannah Leah Neidlinger; and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins, especially blessed by Helene Laskoe; and countless friends, who will always remember her ever present smile. Mrs. Brod first retired from the Rose Avenue Market in 1973 and then Thalhimers Westmoreland. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Friday (today) at New Montifiore Cemetery, New York. Shiva will begin 7 p.m. Sunday at the home of her daughter in Richmond.

BROOKS
Welton Lee Brooks passed away on July 24, 2002. He leaves to cherish his memories five sisters, Mozell H., Annie M. and Dorothy W. Brooks, Ethel E. Taylor and Rosa J. Hawkins, all of Richmond; four nieces; five nephews, among them one devoted, James E. Hamlett; a host of great-nieces and nephews, several great-great-nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives; and friends, among them one devoted friend, Odessa Thornton. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St. Remains will lie in state Saturday, 10 a.m. at First Union Baptist Church, Mechanicsville, Va., where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Dr. B.S. Giles officiating. Burial church cemetery.

CAUDLE
Ruby Scott Caudle, 84, of Richmond, passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2002 at her home. Surviving are R. Keith Caudle, her husband of 61 years; her son, Robert K. Caudle Jr. and his wife, Angier Brock Caudle; grandsons, Robert K. Caudle III and his wife, Jennifer Courain Caudle and William Angier Scott Caudle and his wife, Leanne Yanni; great-granddaughter, Jane Angier Caudle; brother, Howard C. Scott and his wife, Edith M. Scott; sister-in-law, Ellen S. Scott; a special cousin, Vivian O'Hare; a special niece, Betty Moody; and a host of other wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins. She was the daughter of the late Leon C. and Lizzie P. Scott. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Linwood, Ashton, Walter and Milton Scott; and a sister, Thelma S. Worthington. She was born in Dendron, Va. and moved to Richmond with her family in her early teens. As a young woman, she worked in sales at Thalhimers Department Store. She was active in the Westhampton Women's Club and was a member of Welborne United Methodist Church. Remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where the family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. Graveside services will be held 12 noon Saturday, July 27, 2002 at Westhampton Memorial Park. CULLINGSWORTH
Linda Cullingsworth, 43, of Laneview, Va., departed this life Thursday morning, July 25, 2002. She is survived by her loving husband, Danny L. Cullingsworth; and two sons, Matthew Scott Ramsey and Clayton Michael Ramsey. She was the loving daughter of Jean and Stuart Lynch of Montpelier, Va. and the sister of Sandra Edwards of Richmond. She battled with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency and received a lung transplant. She was heroic and brave, and always a loving, caring and giving person. Linda is now free of discomfort and in God's hands; she will always live in the hearts of her family. A memorial service will be held at Glebe Landing Church, Laneview, Va. on Saturday, July 27 at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. Martin Kerby.

DUNCAN
Mary Akers Duncan, 78, of Richmond, widow of Cecil A. Duncan, died Thursday, July 25, 2002. She is survived by two sons, Jeff B. Duncan and his wife, Betty S. Duncan of Rockville and John A. Duncan and his wife, Patricia A. Duncan of Floyd; one daughter, Nancy D. Ciandella and her husband, Thomas L. Ciandella Jr. of Mantua, N.J.; and four grandchildren, Anne and Amy Duncan and Andy and Lauren Ciandella. Mrs. Duncan was the last surviving child of the late Tazewell B. and Lucy H. Akers. She was a member of Westhampton United Methodist Church. Remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, and where services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 28. Gladys Dunivan, 83, of Beaverdam, widow of Early Dunivan, passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2002. She is survived by a daughter and husband, Dolores and Tom Siceloff of Richmond; two grandsons, Robert Grooms Jr. and Christopher Spicer; two stepsons, Thomas and Gene Donovan; four stepdaughters, Brenda Lane, Faye Napier, Marie Emerson and Betty Chinault; a devoted sister-in-law, Elsa Stanley; and many friends. Remains rest at the Beaverdam Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion Christian Church. Roland N. Epps, 74, son of the late Fannie and Frederick Epps Sr., passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 2002 in his home. He leaves to cherish his blessed memories, his wife, Verna "Bumpsy" White Edwards Epps; his daughters, Rolande Kirkland Dews and her husband, Ronald of Takoma Park, Maryland and Hanaan (Karen) Khabir and her husband, Samad of Richmond; his aunt, Elizabeth Cumber; his seven grandchildren; his one great-grandchild; and a host of other relatives and friends. A funeral service celebrating his life will be held 1 p.m. on Monday, July 29, 2002 in First Baptist Church, on Scotland Street, with the Rev. Dr. Thomas Shields officiating. Hilda Marie Gwaltney died in Richmond on Wednesday, July 24, 2002. She is survived by her son and daughters-in-law, John A. and Donna Gwaltney of Wall, N.J. and Jean M. Gwaltney of Spring Hope, N.C.; four grandchildren, James F. III, Michael S., J. Allen Gwaltney Jr. and Kimberly G. Brewer; seven great-grandchildren. HACKMAN
Carol J. Edmondson Hackman, 79, of 143 Boggs Ave., Apt. 102, 23452, passed away July 23, 2002 in Sentara Bayside Hospital. A native of Detroit, Michigan, she had lived in Richmond eight years and the past year in Virginia Beach. She was the loving wife of the late George Robert Hackman. Mrs. Hackman was a retired art teacher with the Detroit Board of Education; attended St. Andrew's United Methodist Church in Richmond; was a member of the Hanover Art League and Metropolitan Art Association in Richmond. She is survived by two daughters, Susan Hackman of Henrico Co. and Sharon Hackman of Virginia Beach; two nieces, two nephews, four great-nieces, and five great-nephews. Robert Nelson Hart (Bobby), 70, of Beaverdam, formerly of Richmond, died July 24, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Delores P. Hart; three daughters, Linda H. Wagstaff, Patsy Hart and Robin L. Taylor; four grandchildren, Tara, Alex, Christopher and Brooke; three stepchildren, Laurie, Jon and Randy. He was preceded in death by Vernelle S. Hart.
