Charles A. Stout

MR. CHARLES A. STOUT, 69, died Wednesday September 19, 2007 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was born in Washington County and had lived in Roanoke several years before moving to Abingdon twenty-two years ago. He was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force, he loved to fish, and was a former truck driver for Hancock Steel Company in Salem. He was preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Hazel Walden Stout.

He is survived by three sons, Mark Stout, Ricky Stout, and Bryan Stout all of Roanoke; one daughter Faye Conner of Roanoke; one sister Ann S. Poole of Abingdon; 11 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 1 nephew and 1 niece.

Graveside services will be conducted Saturday, September 22, 2007 in Knollkreg Memorial Park at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to assemble at the funeral home Saturday by 12:30 p.m. for the funeral procession to the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be friends and family.

Roxie Bartee Wright

Roxie Bartee Wright died Friday, September 21, 2007, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her husband David Wright, her son, Bill Bartee, her daughter Donna Lue Bartee, and her grandson Fallon Bartee.

Survivors include daughters, Carole (Sissy) and James Widner; Sheree and Richard Brown. Grandchildren Gina Qualls, D.J. Brown, Jenna Brown, Tereka Bartee, Bill Bartee Jr., Chance Bartee. Great-grandchildren Sunshine Atwell, Lala Kiser, Shady Bartee, Tori Bartee, Chance Bartee, Jr., Shane Bartee, Billy Bartee, Bill Bartee III. Great-great grandchildren Madison Atwell, Caden Atwell. Sister Wilma Jean Clark, Bristol, TN. Special niece Lisa Banks, Bristol, TN. Daughter-in-law Joan Bartee, Winchester, VA.

Funeral services and burial will be private and there will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Thelma Bostic Hearld

Mrs. Thelma Bostic Hearld, age 81, passed away Friday, September 21, 2007 in Johnston Memorial Hospital.

She was born on December 26, 1925, daughter of the late William A. Bostic and Hazel P. Bostic.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Niles D. Hearld and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her son Wayne D. Hearld and wife Vivien of Tucson, Arizona; daughter, Lennace Murchison and husband, Ellis of Brighton, Colorado. Two brothers, Mack Bostic and Ershel Bostic; one sister, Erlene Hayter. Four grandchildren and one great-grandson along with several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 P.M. on Sunday, September 23, 2007 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Dr. Don Paxton officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home from 6 P.M. until time for service. The committal service will be conducted 1:30 P.M. Monday, September 24, 2007 at Knollkreg Memorial Park with Rev. Wes Stringer officiating. Those wishing to attend are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 1:15 P.M. at the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in memory of Mrs. Hearld to the Washington County Life Saving Crew, 237 Park Street, Abingdon, Virginia 24210.

Eddie Ray Matney, Jr.

Eddie Ray Matney, Jr., beloved husband, father and son, age 29, passed away on September 19, 2007. He was a resident of Washington County, VA, a graduate of Abingdon High School and a driver for UPS. Eddie enjoyed racing, hunting, fishing and camping.

Eddie is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Henry William Matney and his maternal grandmother, Shirley Pauline Layne.

He is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Bridget Jan Bartley Matney; he was the devoted daddy of Logan Lee and Hanna-Raye Grace. Additional survivors include his loving parents, Eddie Matney, Sr., and wife Melody of Hurley VA; special in-laws, Rick and Becky Bartley of Abingdon, VA; his sister and brother-in-law, Tiffany Chantille Wise and Charlie of Damascus; his brother and sister-in-law, Jonathan Henry Matney and Brandy of Abingdon, VA; his paternal grandmother JoAnn E. Matney, Abingdon, VA; his maternal grandfather Earvin Layne of Hurley; his nieces and nephews Brooke and Sydney Wise, Drake Matney, Hunter and Lane Bartley; and many dear friends.

Funeral services for Eddie Ray Matney, Jr., will be held on Monday, September 24, 2007, at 11 a.m., at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, with Rev. Darrell Davis, Pastor David Gibson, and Brother Randy Davenport officiating. Entombment will follow in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum of Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 23, 2007 from 6-9 p.m. at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Pallbearers will be co-workers from UPS and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Todd Estep, Derick Estep, Jacob Estep, Chad Bartley, Wesley Shafer, Joshua Shafer, Caleb Shafer, Rusty Snellenburger, Jeffrey Prater, Alex Prater, Donnie Anderson, Shawn Matney and Jerry Matney.

Charles O. Colley

Charles “Chuck” O. Colley, age 51, of Maryville, TN passed away Thursday, September 20, 2007, in the comfort of his home. Born April 1, 1956, he was a loving father, devoted son, and an honorable man who left an impression with all who met him. He was a master electrician. He was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Caudle Colley.

Survivors include his loving mother, Dorothy Colley of Abingdon, VA; devoted loving daughters, Christine Colley of Maryville, TN., Gina Good and husband Travis Good; and two grandsons Hunter Good and Christopher Good of Elizabethton, TN.; and daughter Danielle Colley of Frederick, MD. Two dedicated brothers Rick Colley and wife, Karina Colley of Jacksonville, FL., and Mark Colley of Abingdon, VA; two nieces, Jessica Kippax and husband Jon Kippax of Daytona Beach, FL and Makayla Colley of Ranson, WV. Two nephews Richard Colley of Alexanderia, VA and Shane Colley of Ranson, WV.

The family will gather for a celebration of life service on Monday, September 24, 2007 at Farris Funeral Service for immediate family. Followed by a private service to be held on a later date to say a final goodbye to such a monumental man. He is loved and will be missed.

Jesse Ellis Moore

Jesse Ellis Moore, age 87, passed away Thursday, September 20, 2007, at Grace Healthcare in Abingdon.

He was born and raised in Gloucester, VA, he then moved to Abingdon, where he resided for 40 years before moving to Florida. Jesse was a member of the St. Thomas Episcopal Church and a member of the Abingdon Masonic Lodge #48. He was the former owner of Moore’s Welding and Radiator Repair. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Widener Moore.

Survivors include one daughter Peggy M. Blackwell of Abingdon, VA; one son Robert E. Moore, Shelby, NC; one sister Sally M. Beatty of Virginia Beach, VA, three grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Father Craig Wiley officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until the service begins. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 246, Abingdon, VA 24212.

Frances Nunley Duncan

Mrs. Dora Frances Nunley Duncan, age 84, died Monday September 24, 2007 at Westbury Health and Rehabilitation Center in McDonough, GA.

Frances was born on September 25, 1923 in Washington County, Virginia and was a daughter of the late Charles Henry Nunley and Willie Bell McFadden Nunley. She was also preceded in death by her husband Garnett O. Duncan.

Frances was a member of the Washington Chapel United Methodist Church in Abingdon and had moved to Georgia five years ago to be with her son and his family.

She is survived by her son, Ronald Duncan and his wife Brenda of Hampton, GA; her sisters, Ruth Lamie of Saltville, VA and Lou Nunley of the Lindell Community of Meadowview, VA; her brother Ernest Nunley of Bristol, VA; four grandsons; eight great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P. M. Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 A. M. Thursday, September 27, 2007 in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Doug Findley officiating. Burial will follow the service. Those attending the funeral service are asked to assemble at the gravesite by 9:50 A. M. Thursday.

William Howard Thayer

Mr. William Howard Thayer, age 80, passed away Tuesday September 25, 2007 in Valley Health Care in Chilhowie.

Mr. Thayer was born July 6, 1927 in Washington County, Virginia to the late Thomas Clifton Thayer and the late Lola Louella Broyles Thayer. Mr. Thayer was a lifelong resident of Washington County and a farmer. Besides his parents Mr. Thayer is preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Selfe Thayer; two brothers, Thomas Edward Thayer and James Lewis Thayer.

Mr. Thayer is survived by four sons; William C. Thayer and wife, B.J. of Rural Retreat, Jamerson Wayne Thayer and Daniel Howard Thayer both of Abingdon, and Robert Franklin Thayer and wife, Anita of Bristol, TN. Four daughters, Delores Ann Coe and husband, Kim of Abingdon, Elana Pauline “Polly” Thayer of Bristol, VA, Teresa Lynn Emerson and husband, Ronnie of Meadowview and Lola Rebecca Cox and husband, Wade of Damascus. Nine grandchildren; Crystal Miller and husband, Shawn, Jennifer Coe, April Atkins and husband Jimmy, Hunter Thayer and wife, Mandy, Annie Minton and husband, Charlie, Chavala Emerson, Alexis Thayer, Shane Thayer, and Kelcey Thayer. Nine great-grandchildren, Drew, Zoe, and Laken Miller; Alley, Chris, and Walter Minton; Kyler Thayer, and Braxton and Brayden Emerson. Three brothers, John Garland Thayer of Limestone, TN, Donald Clifton Thayer of Abingdon, and David Kyle Thayer of Hopewell, VA; two sisters, Hazel Ruth Orfield of Meadowview and Virginia Ellaree Thayer of Abingdon.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2 P.M. Friday, September 28, 2007 at Mountain View United Methodist Church with Rev. Donald Thayer, Rev. Garland Thayer and Rev. Scott Spence officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View United Methodist Church cemetery. Pallbearers will be son’s-in-law and grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of Valley Health Care. The family will receive friends Thursday, September 27, 2007 from 6 – 8 P.M. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. In lieu of flowers in honor of his granddaughter Jennifer Coe donations may be made to Carcinoid Cancer Foundation, 333 Mamaroneck Ave. # 492 White Plains, NY 10605. Special thanks to Valley Health Care and Hospice of Southwest Virginia.

Van Patton Henderson

Mr. Van Patton Henderson, 80, died Tuesday, September 25, 2007 at his residence. He was born and lived most of his life in Washington County. He was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church. He was the son of the late Zeb Vance and Dorothea Frances Henderson. He was a retired rural letter carrier with the United States Postal Service and a farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife Bonnie McClanahan Henderson.

He is survived by 2 sons, Joseph Patton Henderson and wife Lisa of Glade Spring and Scott Carson Henderson of Glade Spring; 3 daughters, Kathy H. Cook and husband Gary of Abingdon, Patricia H. Pafford and husband Cecil of Chilhowie, and Judy H. Turnmire of Glade Spring; and 5 grandchildren, Terry R. Turnmire, Jr., Ashley Erin Turnmire, Tracey Caroline Cook, Emily Elizabeth Vaught, and Grayson Patton Henderson.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, September 29, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with the Rev. Fred Minnick officiating. Burial will follow in the Rush Creek cemetery. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Hillard C. Smith

Mr. Hillard C. Smith, age 97, passed away at his home in Abingdon, VA on September 26, 2007 following a short illness.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his loving wife of 75 years, Rissie M. Smith and a devoted son, A. Frank Smith of Huntington, WV.

Mr. Smith was born on April 19, 1910 Morgan County, Kentucky and moved to Ashland, Kentucky in 1942. He was a past member of the United Steelworkers of America and was employed by Armco Steel for 35 years before retiring in 1972

Survivors include his daughters, Ruth Holmes and husband Hansel Holmes and Kathie Sutherland and husband Dr. J. P. Sutherland Jr. all of Abingdon, VA; his son Darryl Smith and wife Ann Smith of Glade Spring, VA; his daughter-in-law, Joann Smith of Huntington, WV; 7 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.

The family would like to express their gratitude to two very special friends, Hazel Gibson and Marie Adams.

The funeral service for Mr. Smith will be conducted Saturday in Ashland, Kentucky. The family has asked that those who wish to honor the memory of Mr. Smith, to please consider memorial donations to the American Heart Association, 208 Sunset Drive, Suite 113, Johnson City, TN 37604.

Dorothy Coonts McDonald

Mrs. Dorothy Coonts McDonald, age 87, of 569 Sycamore St., Glade Spring, died Thursday, September 27, 2007, at her home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee W. McDonald.

Dorothy was born April 5, 1920, in Belington, WV. She was a graduate of Alderson-Broadus College, Phillippi, WV, and a former elementary school teacher in Barbour County, WV, and Baltimore County, MD. She was a member of Byars-Cobb United Methodist Church in Glade Spring.

She is survived by her daughters, Lenora Smith and husband Leonard, of Damascus, and Beth Sheffield and husband David, of Glade Spring. She is also survived by grandchildren Lee Anne Sheffield, Michael Sheffield, and Matthew Sheffield, all of Glade Spring; Kristi Smith Slaughter and husband Kevin, of Bristol, and great-granddaughter Kassidy Slaughter, of Bristol.

Visitation will be from 6 – 8 P.M. Saturday, September 29, at Carvosso United Methodist Church, 19429 Rustic Lane, Abingdon. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Sunday, September 30, 2007, also at Carvosso United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Leonard Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens, Abingdon. Active pallbearers will be Leonard Smith, David Sheffield, Michael Sheffield, Matthew Sheffield, Eddie Sheffield, Kevin Slaughter, Roy Coonts, Rex Coonts, Gaile Coonts, Jerry Musick and Tom Holliday. Honorary pallbearers will be Ken Roop, Charlie Ross Moore, D.C. Cobler and Brandon Lester.

Dorothy’s family would like to extend special thanks to caregivers Carol Elmore, Karen Poe, Edna Creasy, and Lee Anne Sheffield, and also to Naomi Barrett, Hospice of Southwest Virginia, and Dr. Mark Handy.
