Ruth Harriet Gobble

Mrs. Ruth H. "Granny" Gobble, age 85, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, November 15, 2006 in Valley Health Care in Chilhowie. She had lived most of her life in Washington County, Virginia. She attended Temple Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Denton Gobble, one son, George Gobble, one grandson, Greg Gobble, and one sister, Lorene Lloyd.

She is survived by five Sons, Roger Gobble, Roy Gobble, Wayne Gobble, Kenneth Gobble and Junior Gobble all of Abingdon; two daughters, Geraldine Holloway of Glade Spring and Rebecca Simmons of Abingdon; seventeen grandchildren, one step-grandson, twenty-five great-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren; one brother, R. J. Anderson of Abingdon and two sisters, Ann Fugate of Abingdon and Kate Trent of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

A song service and worship service celebrating the life of Mrs. Gobble will be conducted Thursday, November 16, 2006 at 7:30 PM in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Paul Price officiating. A committal service will be held Friday at 11:00 A.M. in the Knollkreg Memorial Park. Everyone is asked to assemble at the cemetery by 10:50 A.M. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until the time of service. The family will also receive friends at any time at 265 Melrose Street, Abingdon. Pallbearers will be family. Honorary pallbearers will be all area ministers that are friends of the family.

Special thanks to the 3rd wing at Valley Health Care Center of Chilhowie, and all her friends that came to see her.

Charlotte McCray Scalf

Charlotte McCray Scalf, age 54, of Abingdon, Virginia passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. God mercifully called her home after a long, brave battle with cancer.

Charlotte was born on June 16, 1952 in Washington County, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her father, Rev. Roy McCray and her step-sister, Mary Ellen Crawford Dye.

Charlotte’s parents are the Rev. Havis and Dorothy Litton McCray Crawford. Charlotte was the loving mother to four children: Olivia Scalf, Morrell Scalf (David), Tyrel McPherson (Brandon), and Daniel Scalf. Her grandson, Jacob Alan Wright, was the light of her life. Charlotte had three wonderful sisters: Mrs. Jim (Sherie) Horton, Mrs. Roger (Doris) O’Quinn, and Mrs. Dowell (Jackie) Richardson; one uncle, Tommy (Judy) Litton; two nieces, seven nephews, several great-nieces and nephews; as well as numerous close friends.

Charlotte was a fighter and God bestowed many blessings upon her life. She was of the Pentecostal faith and loved serving the Lord. She said many times that if her ordeal with cancer got just one person saved, then it would all be worth it. Charlotte was a blessing to everyone she came into contact with and she will never be forgotten.

Charlotte graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 1970. She graduated from Virginia Highlands Community College in 1996 at the top of her class. She graduated from Emory and Henry College in 1998 and then went to work with People, Inc. where she remained employed until she had to quit due to her sickness.

Charlotte attended Fletcher’s Chapel Church most of her life as well as River Bend Union Church. She lived most of her life in the Hayter’s Gap and Brumley Gap communities where many people knew her as a friend, second mom, and caring neighbor.

The funeral service for Charlotte will be conducted at 1:00 P. M., Friday, November 17, 2006 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Roger O’Quinn officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 9:00 P. M. Thursday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Charlotte’s nephews: Israel and Morgan O’Quinn, Pete and Ryder Richardson, Jason Counts, Justin Horton, and Derrick Dye. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Brumley Gap Fire Department, Sheriff Fred Newman, Major Blake Andis, and members of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office; Dr. Taylor and staff at Cancer Outreach, Dr. Emily DeBord, Dr. William Grosh and Priscilla Merrill, R.N. with the UVA Cancer Center, Michael McCray, Tommy Litton, Rob Goldsmith, Linda Midgett, Danny Foster, and Michael Rush.

Anyone wishing to visit with family may do so at the home of the Rev.& Mrs. Havis Crawford at 13497 King Mill Pike, Bristol, Virginia.

Charlotte’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the countless people and churches who prayed endlessly for her during the battle with cancer. They would also like to thank the Food City Pharmacy in Abingdon, Michelle Counts and the Cancer Outreach Foundation, 5th floor staff and nurses at JMH, Abingdon Ambulance Service, Washington County Fire & Rescue, and the Ambulance Service of Bristol; Dr. Fincher and staff with Nicewonder Cancer Center; the UVA Cancer Center, People, Inc., and the ladies at Classic Studio and Company.

In lieu of flowers, her children request that donations be made to the Cancer Outreach Foundation at 206 Abingdon Place, Abingdon, VA 24210 in care of Michelle Counts or the Brumley Gap Volunteer Fire Department (donation envelopes will be available at the funeral home).

Celia Olivene Moore

Mrs. Celia Olivene Moore, age 67, passed away, Wednesday, November 15, 2006, at the Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Virginia and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by two sons, Perrion Lee Taylor and Kevin Blane Taylor.

She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Baumgardner of Bristol, Tenn.; two sisters, Gwen Pippin of Abingdon, Va. and Maxine Moore of Hampton, Va.; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted Sunday, November 19, 2006, at 2:00 PM in the Knollkreg Memorial Park with Rev. Ricky Neese officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be the grandsons and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 PM Saturday night at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Those attending the service are ask to meet at the cemetery before the service.

Mabel Overbay Fields

Mrs. Mabel Overbay Fields, age 79, surrounded by her husband and children went to be with the Lord Thursday, November 16, 2006 in Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Fields was born March 2, 1927 in Smyth County, Virginia to the late William Fred and Willie Thomas Overbay. Mrs. Fields was a member of Victory Baptist Church. Mrs. Fields was preceded in death by six brothers and 3 sisters. Mrs. Fields was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Mrs. Fields is survived by her husband of 61 years Joe Frank Fields, two daughters, Jerri F. Mitchell and husband, Alan and Patricia G. Fleenor and, husband Curtis all of Abingdon. Two sons; Joe S. Fields and wife, Trenna of Dalton, Georgia and Dr. Rev. Dennis Fields, Sr. and wife, Glenna of Abingdon. Eight grandchildren six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, November 18, 2006 at 8:00 P.M. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Highway) with Dr. Rev. Dennis F. Fields, Sr.. and Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating. A committal service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday November 19, 2006 in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Dennis Fields, II, Curtis S. Fleenor, Nolan Fleenor, Henry Fields, Harold Fields, Robbie Price. The family will receive friends at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service from 6:00 P.M. until time for service on Saturday.

The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Grace Health Care Activities Department, 600 Walden Road, Abingdon, Virginia 24210.

Ruby Irene Whitlock Hash

Ruby Irene Whitlock Hash, age 90, passed away on Monday, Nov. 13, 2006, at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

She had been a resident of the Hillcrest Adult Care for the past 20 years before moving to Grace Healthcare Center.

Ruby was born on April 26, 1916, in Knoxville. She was preceded in death by husband, William Fred Hash, and her parents, William Jacob and Ella Mae Warwick Whitlock.

A special thank you to her friends, Troby Kirk, Angie Booth and Alice Burton, all of Maryland, and Audrey Rickman of Virginia, for the love they shared with Ruby.

The graveside service for Ruby was conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, 2006, at Felts Memorial cemetery in Galax, with the Rev. Ted Bartlett officiating.

W. Clyde McCracken

Mr. William Clyde McCracken, age 88, passed away Sunday, November 19, 2006, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Mr. McCracken was born November 13, 1918 in Washington County, Virginia, to the late Benjamin Harrison McCracken, Sr. and Mary Thomas McCracken. Mr. McCracken served in the United States Navy during World War II and retired after 45 years of service from Washington Motor Company. He was a member of Abingdon Baptist Church.

Mr. McCracken was preceded in death by his first wife of 50 years, Dorothy Jackson McCracken; by four brothers: B.H. McCracken, Bobby McCracken, Garland McCracken, and Monroe McCracken; and by three sisters: Earnestine Weaver, Lucille Jackson, and Pearl Lloyd.

Mr. McCracken is survived by his wife of 19 years, Bonnie Breeding McCracken; one son, Charles “Sonny” Grogan; one daughter, Marlene Gehman; two granddaughters, Teresa Stephon and Lisa Owens; one sister, Geneva Repass, three great-grandchildren; two step-daughters, Norma Johnston and husband Jack and Judy Osborne; 2 step-granddaughters, one step-grandson and two step-great grandchildren.

A funeral service for Mr. Clyde McCracken will be conducted Wednesday, November 22, 2006, at 11:00 A.M. in Abingdon Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Stephen Pollard officiating. Interment will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park, with military graveside rites by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Joe Stephon, Cody Owens, Frank Stephon, Jesse Owens, Charles Hutton and R.W. Osborne. Honorary pallbearers will be Bert Mullins, Jim Hughes and the Men of The Kiser Sunday School Class. The family will receive friends Tuesday November 21, 2006 from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.

Ernest Ray Guinn

Mr. Ernest Ray “Ernie” Guinn, age 35, died Friday, November 17, 2006, at his home.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, November 22, 2006, at 11:00 AM in the Blackwell’s Chapel cemetery with Rev. Paul White officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 – 8 PM Tuesday at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Family and friends are to ask to meet at the cemetery before the service.

Martin Rosenbaum, Jr.

Mr. Martin Rosenbaum, Jr., age 86, passed away Friday, November 17, 2006 at his residents.

Mr. Rosenbaum was born August 17, 1920 in Washington County, Virginia to the late Martin Rosenbaum, Sr. and Sally Barker Rosenbaum. He was a World War II veteran having served in the United States Army. Mr. Rosenbaum was of the Presbyterian faith.

Mr. Rosenbaum is preceded death by one sister, Dorothy R. Bowles of Franklin, North Carolina. And five brothers, Delma Rosenbaum of Kimberly, Idaho, Fred Rosenbaum, Clyde Rosenbaum, Walter Rosenbaum, and French Rosenbaum all of Glade Spring.

Mr. Rosenbaum is survived by two sisters, Virginia Ramsey of Salem, Virginia, and Sarah R. Hackler and husband, Robert of Marion, Virginia. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted Friday, November 24, 2006 at 2:00 P.M. in Old Glade Presbyterian Church cemetery with Rev. Timothy E. Bird officiating. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to assemble by 1:50 P.M. at the cemetery. Friends and family may visit at the home of Grace Rosenbaum 32305 Lee Highway Glade Spring, Virginia at any time Friday before the service.

Patsy Bowers Davenport

Mrs. Patsy Bowers Davenport, age 68, died Friday, November 24, 2006 at the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Patsy was born on March 15, 1938 in Washington County, Virginia and was a daughter of the late Thomas W. Bowers and Maggie Orr Bowers. She was a longtime member of the Glade Spring Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 49 years, Charles W. (C. W.) Davenport; her daughter, Melinda Kay Davenport of Glendale, AZ; her sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Don Beach of Glade Spring, VA; her niece, Phyllis Ayling of Charleston, SC and her very dear and special friend, Marlene Gill.

The funeral service for Patsy will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Monday, November 27, 2006 at the graveside in Old Glade Spring Presbyterian Church cemetery with Rev. Timothy Bird officiating. Interment will follow the service. Those attending the service are asked to gather at the cemetery by 10:50 A. M. Monday.

The family will receive friends any time at Patsy’s home. There will be no formal visitation at the funeral home, however everyone is welcome to come by to sign the guest register book.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to the Washington County Animal Defense League, P. O. Box 2099, Abingdon, Virginia 24212.

John W. "Tobe" Bowers, Jr.

John W. "Tobe" Bowers, Jr., age 75, went to be with his Lord and Savior Wednesday, November 29, 2006 after a valiant battle with cancer.

Tobe was a lifelong resident of the Wallace Community in Washington Co., VA. and had worked most of his life as a farmer and master tile setter, and had hauled agricultural lime and fertilizer throughout Southwest VA. He was a member of Maple Grove Presbyterian Church and a member of the York Lodge # 12 A.F. & A.M. for more than 50 years.

Tobe was the son of the late John W. Bowers, Sr. and Pearl Blevins Bowers. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Eva Lee Rosenbalm Bowers; two half brothers, Edgar Lee Bowers and James C. Bowers and four half sisters, Daisy Harley, Pearl Harley, Nellie Anderson, and Catherine Strouth.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Janelle Tyree Bowers; four daughters, Mrs. Beverly (Clarence) Wilson, Jr. of Kingsport, TN; Mrs. Toby (Don) Jordan, Mrs. Jackie (Bobby) Williams, and Mrs. Rosie (Luke) Roberts all of Bristol, VA; three brothers, Jack Bowers, Ralph Bowers, and E.H. Bowers, all of Abingdon; five sisters, Margaret Nash, Betty Watson, Faye Roark, Ann Roark, all of Bristol and Carolyn Thomlinson of Blountville; one half­ brother, W.R. Bowers of Bristol; two half-sisters, Ethel Dickenson of Bristol, and Eva Moore of Smyrna, TN; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth J. Wells of Abingdon, Jaime Williams, Lucas Jordan, Jessica Williams, Jill Williams, Nathan Roberts, and Laura Roberts all of Bristol; two step grandchildren, Donnie Jordan of Madisonville, TN and Michael Jordan of Knoxville, TN. He is also survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for John W. “Tobe” Bowers, Jr. will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, December 2, 2006 in the Maple Grove Presbyterian Church with Mr. Stephen Talbert, CLP officiating. The burial service will follow at Maple Grove cemetery with Masonic Services by the York Lodge #12 A.F. & A. M. The family will receive friends from 6 - 9 p.m. on Friday December 1, at the York Lodge #12 Fellowship Hall, located on Black Hollow Road, Abingdon. (Black Hollow roads turns by Central Machine Shop off Wyndale Road).

Pallbearers will be Lucas Jordan, Nathan Roberts, Donnie Jordan, Adam Wilson, Mark McCracken, Garland Nash, Bruce Tyree, and Greg Roark. Honorary pallbearers will be Buddy Parris, Clarence Stevens, Herman Bostic, Carrroll Young, Billy D. Lester, Jerry Dunn, Robert Dunn, Tim Alderman, James Tate, Paul Tate, David Wilson, Elwood Cretsinger, Freddie Mullins, Martin Houser, Jr., members of York Lodge #12 A.F. & A. M., Dr. Tom Johnson, Dr. Thomas Boeve and Dr. Emily DeBord.

Contributions as gestures of remembrance for Tobe may be sent to Cancer Outreach Foundation, 206 Abingdon Place, Abingdon, VA 24211 or the American Lung Association of Virginia, PO Box 1249, Abingdon, VA 24212. All flower memorials are requested to be taken to the York Lodge for delivery.

Edward Tilden Blackwell

Mr. Edward Tilden Blackwell, age 45, passed away November 29, 2006.

Mr. Blackwell is preceded in death by his father, William E. Blackwell.

Mr. Blackwell is survived by one son, Edward Seth Blackwell of Abingdon, mother, Joye Blackwell of Bristol, Virginia, and several aunts, uncles and nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted 11:00 am Saturday, December 2, 2006 in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Pastor David Gibson officiating. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 10:50 a.m.

Honorary pallbearers will be Mark Frye, Jody Frye, Tim Roberts, Tommy Sykes, and Friends of Midway Church of the Living God.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Midway Church of the Living God, P.O. Box 34 Abingdon, Virginia 24212.

Bobby Jackson Bays

Bobby Jackson Bays, 57, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 1997, in the Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport, Tenn.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 16 at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.

He was a graduate of George Wythe High School.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Beatrice Fowler Bays; and a sister, Bonita B. Porter.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Bays of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a son, Benjamin "Benny" Bays of Baltimore, Md.; a daughter, Toni Overmiller of Maryland; his father, Howard E. Bays of Wytheville; and one grandchild.

Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.

Raymond Sherwood Cornett

Raymond Sherwood Cornett, 72, of Marion, Va., died Thursday, June 5, 2003, in the Veteran's Hospital, Salem, Va.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 7, at 7 p.m. at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, Marion, Va., with Pastor James H. Bangle officiating. Military rites will be conducted by Marion V.F.W. Post No. 4667. Burial will be in the church columbarium.

He was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Occupation Forces in Japan and Germany. He also was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. While serving in Korea, he was awarded the Bronze Star. He served as a master watch maker and jeweler for many years in Marion, Va.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Waak Cornett of Marion, Va.; one daughter, Dana Jean Cornett of Harrisonburg, Va.; one son, Avery Sherwood Cornett of Marion, Va.; and one granddaughter, Brooke Cornett Moon.

The family will receive friends Saturday, June 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ebenezer Lutheran Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the 7-1 Building Program, Veterans Medical Center, 1970 Roanoke Blvd., Salem, VA 24153.

Seaver-Brown Funeral Service in Marion, Va., is in charge of the arrangements.
