Mollie Louise Cox of Bland, Va., died Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 11 a.m. in the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel, Bland, Va., with the Rev. Robert Carbary officiating. Interment will be in the Blue Springs United Methodist Church cemetery.

She was born in Grayson County, Va. She was of the United Methodist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman "Casey" Cox; her parents, Ellis Fielder Sage and Leona Sage; four sisters and one brother.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Freida and Randy Irvin of Wytheville, Va., and Judy and Bobby Leighton Newberry of Mechanicsburg, Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, Dwight and Margie Cox of Bland, Va.; two granddaughters and a spouse, April and Ricky Dutton, and Ashley Cox; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Nov. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel, Bland, Va.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorial donations to the Bland County Rescue Squad.

Charles Buford Booher

Charles Buford Booher, 63, of Wytheville, Va., died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at his home.

Funeral service will be held Friday, Dec. 12, at 11 a.m. at the Wytheville Baptist Church with Pastor Wade D. Tucker Sr. officiating. Interment will be in West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

He was born April 20, 1940, in Mendota, Va. He was a member of the Wytheville Baptist Church and was retired from Longwood Elastomers Inc.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Craig and Bonnie Ethel Worley Booher; two brothers, Darold Booher and Bobby Booher; and a nephew, Gregory Booher.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara F. Booher; one daughter and son-in-law, Holley and Boyd Vaught of Dallas, Ga.; one son and daughter-in-law, Brett and Cindy Booher of the Fort Chiswell area of Max Meadows, Va.; four grandchildren, Garrett, Bryson, Lacey and Caroline; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy Couch, Betty and J.R. "Bob" Smith, Shirley Leonard, and Janet and Marvin Farmer, all of Bristol, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Dec. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wytheville Baptist Church.

Memorial donations may be made to the Wytheville Baptist Church Window Fund or the American Cancer Society.

Richard D. Ingram, 65, of Bland, Va., died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003.

Walter Wesley Palmer

Dr. Walter Wesley Palmer, 72, of Wytheville, Va., died Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at his home.

Funeral service will be held Thursday, Dec. 11, at 10 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Dr. Donald Stansell and the Dr. Christopher Pile officiating. Interment will be in West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 9.

He was born in Southeast Roanoke, Va., a son of the late Robert Pelham and Beatrice Link Palmer. He attended Jamison Elementary School and Stonewall Jackson Junior High School and was graduated from Jefferson Senior High School in 1950. After serving in a U.S. Marine Corps Rifle Company in the Korean War, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Roanoke College, a master’s degree from VPI and a doctorate from the University of Virginia. A teacher at Highland Park Elementary School and Jefferson Senior High School, he served as president of the Roanoke City School Masters Club. He was principal of Wakefield Combined School, Wakefield, Va., and Culpeper County High School. Later he served as director of instruction for the Harrisonburg School system.

From 1968 through 1996, he served at Wytheville Community College in various capacities from professor to dean of instruction and honored with the title professor emeritus in 1997. In 1998 he was the graduation speaker at the request of the students, faculty and administration. He also taught graduate school administration courses for UVa and VPI and was past commander of the Wytheville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2719. A life member of the Marine Corps League, the V.F.W., and the American Legion, he was past president of the Wytheville Rotary Club, which honored him with a Paul Harris Fellowship. He served on the board of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Wytheville, Va.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Roberts Palmer; a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Leigh Palmer and the Rev. Michael Hadaway of Richmond, Va.; a brother and sister-in-law, Ellis Wayne and Peggy Palmer of Chamblissburg, Va.; two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Phyllis and Ken Cockerham of Collinsville, Va., and Ginger Roberts and Richard Ballard of Abingdon, Va.; and two brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Scott and Cleta Roberts, and Charles and Anna Ray Roberts, all of Rural Retreat, Va.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Dec. 10, at from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Wythe County Rescue Squad or to the charity of one's choice.

Louise Smith Ogle

Louise Smith Ogle, 83, of Barren Springs, Va., died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, in the Beverly Health Care Blue Ridge.

Funeral service will be held Friday, Nov. 21, at 2 p.m. at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel in Hillsville, Va., with the Rev. Randy Morris officiating. Burial will be in the Frost cemetery.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Zona and Junior Cox of Independence, Va., and Ann and Junior Hundley of Pearisburg, Va.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Friday, Nov. 21, from 1 to 2 p.m. (service time) at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel.

Mildred Combs Rasnake

Mildred Combs Rasnake, 94, of Bastian, Va., died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, in Kegley Manor Nursing Home, Bastian, Va.

Funeral service will be Thursday, Nov. 20, at 2 p.m. at the Bastian Union Church with the Rev. Lee McIntosh and the Rev. Paul Looney officiating. Interment will be in the Rose Hill cemetery, Bastian, Va.

She was born in Russell County, Va. She was the oldest member of Bastian Union Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Asa Rasnake; her parents, Walter and Bell Ray Combs; a daughter, Verna Irene Bruce; six brothers and one sister.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Ila Jean and Arnold Kitts of Bastian, Va.; one sister, Cora Buckles of Lebanon, Va.; four grandchildren and their spouses, Gary and Fran Bruce of Roanoke, Va., Jennifer and Cory Breckenridge of Salem, Va., Dr. Rhonda Ryan of Salem, Va., and Shirley and Derrick Russell of South Boston, Va.; and five great-grandchildren and a spouse, Brandi Bruce, Candice Bruce, Joshua and Jennifer Hamilton, Bethany Hamilton and Patrick Ryan.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bastian Union Church.

Charles F. Anderson

Charles F. Anderson, 83, of Oswego, N.Y., formerly of Stratford, N.J., died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003.

The mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, Nov. 22, at 10 a.m. at St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church, Stratford, N.J. Interment will be in Gates of Heaven cemetery, Clementon, N.J.

He worked 39 years at Exide Battery in Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alva C. Anderson.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary R. and Hugh T. Mulgrew Jr. of Wytheville, Va., and Charlene and Robert Gurney of Oswego, N.Y.; a sister and brother-in-law, Marie and Frank Graft of Bellmawr, N.J.; 14 grandchildren and their spouses, Hugh T. III and Melanie Mulgrew of Rural Retreat, Va., Kathryn and Al Bird of Charleston, W.Va., Robert and Kim Mulgrew of Wytheville, Va., Tammy Mulgrew of Wytheville, Va., Patrick Mulgrew of Rural Retreat, Va., Matthew and Amy Mulgrew of Walnut Cove, N.C., Colleen and John Brewster of Rural Retreat, Va., Rebecca and Jason Irvin of Wytheville, Va., Michael Mulgrew, Kristina Mulgrew, David Mulgrew, Shawn Mulgrew, all of Wytheville, Va., Kathy Gurney, and Kristina Gurney, both of Oswego, N.Y.; and nine great-grandchildren, Patrick Mulgrew Jr., Walker Keen, Hugh T. Mulgrew IV, Mason Mulgrew, Matthew Alexander Mulgrew, Michael Mulgrew, Harley Jo Mulgrew, Celeste Clark, and Summer Brewster.

Gladys Marie Brewster Crouse, 76, of Wytheville, Va., died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at her home.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, Nov. 22, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Clayton Hounshell and the Rev. James Dean Brewster officiating. Interment will be in the New Bethel cemetery.

She was born July 17, 1927, in Smyth County, Va., a daughter of the late Cleo Brewster. She was a member of New Bethel United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Roscoe Crouse; and one sister.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Doris and Michael Mays of Vinton, Va.; two sons, Allen Roscoe Crouse of Bluefield, W.Va., and Larry Kenneth Crouse of Rural Retreat, Va.; three sisters, Lois Robinson of Damascus, Md., Charlotte Cline of Wytheville, Va., and Mae Rose of Paige, W.Va.; eight brothers, George Brewster Jr. of Rural Retreat, Va., Harloe Brewster of Fairfax, Va., John Brewster of Roanoke, Va., Paul Brewster of Wytheville, Va., Leon Brewster of Rural Retreat, Va., Dean Brewster of Greenville, Tenn., William "Buster" Crabtree, Va., and Robert "Bobby" Crabtree, both of Smyth County, Va.; special friends, Paige Cochran and Nora Walters; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Ray Maynard Arnold, 45, of Max Meadows, Va., died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral service will be held Monday, Nov. 24, at 8 p.m. in the Reese Funeral Home Chapel in Austinville, Va., with the Rev. A.C. Ashford officiating. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 11 a.m. in the Mt. Zion cemetery.

He was born July 12, 1958, in Wythe County, Va., a son of the late Benny Bernard and Helen Mozelle Clemons Arnold.

Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Perry Lee and Lisa Arnold of Lindside, W.Va.; one sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Greg Gibson of Max Meadows, Va.; a special friend, Ellie Cregar of Max Meadows, Va.; two nephews, Brandon Arnold and Chad Arnold; one niece, Britney Arnold; and several aunts, uncles and other close relatives.

The family will receive friends Monday, Nov. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. (service time) at the Reese Funeral Home.

Fred Jay Bivens, 56, of High Point, N.C., died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at his home.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 10 a.m. at Forbis and Dick Funeral Services, in Greensboro, N.C. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 3 p.m. at Rosehill cemetery, Bastian, Va.

He was born April 8, 1947, in Bluefield, W.Va., a son of Ethel Bivens and the late Ernie Bivens of Marion, Va. He was employed with Bill Black Volkswagen in Greensboro, N.C. He was a veteran of the United State Air Force.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Ray Bivens.

Survivors include his wife, Vickie Bivens of High Point, N.C.; two daughters, Jennifer Mason of Charlotte, N.C., and Rebecca Kirkman of High Point, N.C.; his mother, Ethel Bivens of Marion, Va.; two brothers, Jack Bivens of Marion, Va., and Mike Bivens of Virginia Beach; one sister, Nancy Cress of Marion, Va.; three grandchildren, Dustin Bivens and Allison Kirkman, both of High Point, N.C., and Ashley Mason of Charlotte, N.C.; and two nieces.

The family will receive friends Monday, Nov. 24, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Forbis and Dick Funeral Service in Greensboro, N.C.

Thelma Cleo Shinault Childers, 70, of Wytheville, Va., the Piney community, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 26, at 11 a.m. in the St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. James Black officiating. Interment will be in Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Rural Retreat, Va.

She was born Dec. 6, 1932, in Wythe County, Va., a daughter of the late Early M. and Sibble Campbell Shinault. She was a member of St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She is survived by her husband, George F. Childers Sr. of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, George F. "Butch" Jr. and Brenda Childers of Wytheville, Va.; one daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Doug King of the Piney section of Wythe County, Va.; two sisters, Kathryn Ogburn and Mary Leagans, both of Winston-Salem, N.C.; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Todd and Sammy King, Danny and Stephanie King, Brian and Missy Childers, Jason Childers, T.J. King, Sara Childers and Andrew King; nine great-grandchildren, Coty, Erin, Hunter, Cheyenne, Santana, Matthew, Zack, Amber and Cameron; a special family friend, Tracy; and a special friend, Bonnie.
