Ruth Elizabeth Halsey Lambert, 90, of Wythe County, Va., died Monday, June 9, 2003, at Asbury Place in Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 14, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Harvey Atkinson officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

Born Nov. 5, 1912, in Wytheville, Va. She was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howe K. Lambert; her parents, Sanders Crockett Halsey and Ada Ruth Felty Halsey; three brothers, Logan D. Halsey of Wytheville, Va., Eugene Harold Halsey of New York, Julian Howard Halsey of Wytheville, Va.; one daughter-in-law, Mary McLaughlin Lambert of Wytheville, Va.; two sisters-in-law, Helen Lambert Williams of Wytheville, Va., and Bulah Lambert Wolford of Barco, N.C.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Rebecca and Don Loveday of New York, and Linda and Larry White of Dallas, Texas; three sons and daughters-in-law, William Lambert of Wytheville, Va., Jack and Josie Lambert of Staten Island, N.Y., and Gene and Judy Lambert of Max Meadows, Va.; one sister, Margaret Callahan of Wytheville, Va.; one brother and sisters-in-law, Edgar and Lorraine Halsey of Herndon, Va., Laura S. Halsey, and Bertha Lambert Dix, both of Wytheville, Va.; 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several niece, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends Friday, June 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

Elbert Harvey Spencer

Elbert Harvey Spencer, 63, of Thomasville, N.C., died Saturday, June 7, 2003.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 9, at 4 p.m. in the J.C. Green & Sons Chapel in Thomasville, N.C., with the Rev. Pat Ellis officiating. Interment was in the Original Church of God cemetery, Davidson County, N.C.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Goins Spencer of Thomasville, N.C.; two sons, Nathan Wayne Spencer and Ricky Earl Spencer, both of Thomasville, N.C.; his mother, Emmie Spencer Nichols of Max Meadows, Va.; five sisters, Virginia Davis of Bland, Va., Elsie Author of Christiansburg, Va., Carrie Jones of Austinville, Va., Linda Sykes of Galax, Va., and Susan Westmoreland of Roanoke, Va.; four brothers, Herman Spencer of Mountain City, Tenn., Timothy Spencer of Max Meadows, Va., Clinton Spencer of Staunton, Va., and Dewey Spencer of Pulaski, Va.; and seven grandchildren, Brandon Spencer, Sean Spencer, Emily Spencer, Maston Kindley, Heather Kindley, Tristan Brewer and Danielle Ward.

J.C. Green & Sons Inc. in Thomasville, N.C., was in charge of the arrangements.

Lyndell Lyle Hockman

Lyndell Lyle Hockman, 81, of Mount Jackson, Va., died Monday, May 12, 2003, at his home.

Funeral service was held Wednesday, May 14, at 2 p.m. at the Dellinger Funeral Home in Mount Jackson, Va., with the Rev. Jeffry J. Roberts officiating. Burial with full military honors by Massanutten Post. No. 2447 V.F.W. Edinburg was in Mount Jackson cemetery. A Masonic service was held Tuesday, May 13, at 7 p.m. at Mount Jackson United Methodist Church following visitation.

He was born May 28, 1921, in Slanesville, W.Va., a son of the late Floyd and Essie Saville Hockman. He was a member of Mount Jackson United Methodist Church, Mount Jackson Masonic Lodge No. 103 A.F. & A.M., a former member of Alexandria Scottish Rites, a member of Massanutten Post No. 2447 Edinburg, Past Patron of Mount Jackson Chapter No. 162 OES, member of Woodstock Chapter No. 93 OES and served in various volunteer positions in the county through the years. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force after 23 years and the Shenandoah County School System at Triplett Technical Institute after 15 years. He was a veteran of three wars, World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He received the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Purple Heart and several campaign ribbons. His unit received two Presidential Unit Citations.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Waldo Hockman.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Ann Gillespie Hockman, whom he married May 12, 1946, in Wythe County, Va.; two sisters, Carson "Kit" Haines of Morgantown, W.Va., and Bernice Stone of Cincinnati, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 West Cork Street, Winchester, VA 22601; or Mount Jackson United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 27, Mount Jackson, VA 22842.

Beulah White Harris Litz

Beulah White Harris Litz, 87, of Wytheville, Va., formerly of Pulaski, Va., died Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at her residence.

Funeral service will be held Friday, May 16, at 11 a.m. at Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home in Pulaski with the Rev. Randal Lawrence officiating. Burial will be in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin, Va.

Born Nov. 10, 1915, in Pulaski County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Frank B. and Pearle Worrell White. She was a creator of crafts for Charles Dickens Characters and was a longtime member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, Wytheville, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James "Jack" William Litz; three sisters, Alma Dalton Robertson, Beatrice Arnold and Daphine Coffey; and one brother, Sterling White. Survivors include one son, S. Arnold Harris of Roanoke, Va.; two sisters, Marie Hurst of Laurel, Md., and Jo Ann Akers of Pulaski, Va.; three brothers Ralph E. White, Frank B. White and John W. White, all of Pulaski, Va.; three grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

The family will receive friends at any at the residence of Jo Ann and Travis Akers, 3106 Fink Farm Road, Pulaski, Va.

Virginia York Baker

Virginia "Nellie" York Baker, 76, of Barren Springs, Va., died Thursday, May 15, 2003, in the Pulaski Community Hospital, Pulaski, Va.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 18, at 2 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel in Austinville, Va., with the Rev. James Price officiating. Interment will be in the James Snow cemetery in Barren Springs, Va.

She was born in Wythe County, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond R. Baker; her parents, Isaac Andrew York Sr. and Willie Myrtle Carpenter York; two sisters, Daisy Brewster and Maudie June York; four brothers, Clifford Lee York, Claude B. York, Albert Alvin York and William Oscar York.

Survivors include two sisters, Annie "Janie" Snow of Barren Springs, Va., and Mary Susan Miller of Anaheim, Calif.; two brothers, Isaac Andrew York Jr. of Roanoke, Va., and Jimmy York of Barren Springs, Va.; two aunts, Annie Primm of Max Meadows, Va., and Hestal Carpenter of Baltimore, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, May 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Reese Funeral Home Chapel.

James Donovan "J.D." Cox Sr.

James Donovan "J.D." Cox Sr., 80, of Bristol, Tenn., died Monday, May 12, 2003, in Bristol, Tenn.

He was born March 2, 1923, in Pickshin, W.Va., a son of the late Clayborn B. and Pauline A. Vaughan Cox. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in Bastian, Va., in 1940 and 1941, where he met his wife, Winifred Ellen "Toots" Kelly Cox. He was a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Marine Corps. After more than 30 years of service, he retired from the Virginia Department of Corrections as a warden. Recently he received his 50-year pin from the Masonic Lodge. He was a Past Master of the Bland Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Winifred Ellen "Toots" Kelly Cox; and a son, J.D. "Don" Cox Jr.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Ron and Jane Cox of Bristol, Tenn., and Mike Cox of Mechanicsville, Va.; five grandchildren, Doug Cox and his family of Laurel, Del., Eric Cox and Jill Holcomb, both of Norfolk, Va., and Amanda Cox and Chris Cox, both of Mechanicsville, Va.; extended families, the Havens and the Townleys; and close friends, Bob Myers, Ralph DeHart, both of Bland, Va., Marvin Lambert of Courtland, Va., and Brenda Cox of Salisbury, Md.

Memorial donations may be made to a local food bank or charity of one's choice.

Leola Ruth Groseclose, 88, of Ceres, Va., died Friday, May 16, 2003.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 18, at 2 p.m. at the Bethany United Methodist Church in Ceres, Va., with the Rev. Ruthanne Henley officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hub; two daughters, Shirley and Rosemary; her parents, Thomas and Lillian Atwell King; and brothers.

Survivors include a daughter, Marsha Penley of Wytheville, Va.; grandchildren and their spouses, Chris and Tracy Penley of Wytheville, Va., Faith Seagle of Ceres, Va., Meagan and Chad Parcell of Wytheville, Va., Eleanor and Keith Dunn of Wytheville, Patrick and Sarah Bruce of Ceres, Va., Joy Bruce of Roanoke, Va., and Dixie and Craig Booe of Mocksville, N.C.; eight great-grandchildren, Hayley, Devin, Adrian, Jaden, Jacob, Kaitlyn, Travis, and Jeremy; extended family, Danny and Linda Penley, and Booty Bass; and her little dog, Brittay; and five nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, May 17, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel in Bland, Va.

Carolyn Stoneman Long

Carolyn Stoneman Long, 65, of Ashtabula, Ohio, died Friday, April 11, 2003, at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa.

Burial was in Ridgeview cemetery, Ohio.

She was born on Jan. 17, 1938, in Ivanhoe, Va. She had been an Ashtabula, Ohio, resident for most of her life. She was a 1956 graduate of Ashtabula High School.

She was preceded in death by an infant son; and her parents, Eugene and Gladys Richardson Stoneman.

Survivors include her husband, Ernest G. Long, whom she married on Jan. 17, 1959; three daughters, Susan Leonard, Karen Garnett and Kelly Sunderlin, all of Ashtabula, Ohio; one son, Robert Long of Ashtabula, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Michael, Daniel, David, Tommy, Stephen, Brianna, and Felicia; three brothers, K. Douglas Stoneman, Larry E. Stoneman, and Randall Stoneman, all of Ashtabula, Ohio; and one sister, Carol Rey of Boca Raton, Fla.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital, 11100 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH 44106.

Catherine Roslyn Pauley

Catherine Roslyn Pauley, 80, of Max Meadows, Va., died Monday, June 9, 2003, in the Grayson Nursing and Rehab Center in Independence, Va.

A prayer service will be held Thursday, June 12, at 8:30 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville, Va. A funeral mass will be held Friday, June 13, at noon at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Wytheville, Va., with Father Rene Castillo officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

She was born in New York, a daughter of the late James Howard and Anne Cimino Finning. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and was a retired secretary.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, James and Mary Ann Pauley of Illinois; one daughter, Janis P. Hilliker of Max Meadows, Va.; six grandchildren, James Pauley, John Pauley, Patrick Pauley, Kenneth Hilliker, Denise Hilliker and Thomas Hilliker; four great-grandchildren, Kiera Hilliker, Kaycee Hilliker, Victoria Hilliker and Angelina Hilliker; and one sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Robert Rettig of New Jersey.

The family will receive friends Thursday, June 12, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. (service time) at the Barnett Funeral Home.

William "Wayne" Allison Jr.

William "Wayne" Allison Jr., 47, of Pulaski, Va., formerly of Draper, Va., died Friday, June 13, 2003, in the Pulaski Community Hospital, Pulaski, Va.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 16, at 4 p.m. at the Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Ken Pearce, the Rev. Randal Lawrence and the Rev. George Freeman officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Born Jan. 28, 1956, in Wytheville, Va., he was a member of Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church. He was a graduate of Dublin High School and later lived in Northern Virginia where he attended the Virginia Glass Academy and became certified as a glass technician and an accomplished auto mechanic. He was employed by Koon's Ford in Falls Church, Va., for several years. He later moved to Wythe County, Va., where he owned and operated a business for some time. Due to a problematic illness, he retired and moved back to Pulaski, Va.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Wayne "Booty" Allison Sr.; two brothers, James Randal "Randy" Allison and Keith Emmuel Allison; one sister, Cindy Elizabeth Allison; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Windle of Draper, Va., and Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Wayne Allison of Wythe County, Va.

Survivors include his mother, Margaret Windle Allison of Draper, Va.; one brother, Alan Richardo "Ricky" Allison of Draper, Va.; a sister, Alice A. Hensley of Dublin, Va.; a longtime companion, Beatrice Jane Quesenberry of Pulaski, Va.; a son, Travis Wayne of Pulaski, Va.; a daughter, August Jane of Pulaski, Va.; several nieces and nephews; and a good friend and cousin, Gary Akers of Pulaski, Va.

William Gatewood "Bill" Coulson Jr.

William Gatewood "Bill" Coulson Jr., 63, of Danner Road, Max Meadows, Va., died Sunday, June 15, 2003.

Graveside services will be private.

He was born Sept. 11, 1939 in Wythe County, Va., a son of the late William G. Sr. and Ollie Gertrude Fowler Coulson. He was a driller, having worked for E.J. Longyear, V.P.I. and Daniels Construction. He served in the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by one daughter, Tammy Arnold of Max Meadows, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Barry "Stew" Coulson of Max Meadows, Va., Jeff "Fred" and Vickie Coulson of Ivanhoe, Va., and Margaret L. Coulson of Max Meadows, Va.; five grandchildren and their spouses, Stephanie Arnold, Tonya Coulson, Crystal and Adam Hagy, Beth Coulson, and Dominik Coulson; one great-grandchild, Adam Clay Hagy Jr.; four sisters, Gay Coulson, Kathryn Coulson, both of Pulaski, Va., Lillian Thomas of Max Meadows, Va., and Donna Coulson of Houston, Texas; one brother, Sidney "Bub" Coulson of Dublin, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home in Austinville, Va., or at the home of his daughter, Tammy Arnold, at any time.

Carol Jean "Tonto" Jones, 57, of Dungeon Spring Road in the Piney community of Wythe County, Va., died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at her home.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 17, at 11 a.m. at the Liberty Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Bobby Lewis and the Rev. Kent Lewis officiating. Interment will be in the Mt. Zion cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, Va., a daughter of the late Floyd E. and Vivian Arnold Dunford. She was a former employee of the Southwest Virginia Training Center, a member of Liberty Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church and a member of the Jones Singers.

She is survived by her husband, Tommy Jones; three sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas Wayne and Suzanne Jones of Rural Retreat, Va., Steven Eugene and Sheila Jones, and Eric Shawn and Jennifer Jones, all of Wytheville, Va.; six grandchildren, Kayla Jones, Ernie Simons, Jodie Simons, Brad Jones, Tara Faith Jones and Isaac Jones; one great-grandchild, Austin Blake Hamm; one sister, Evelyn "Sue" Hall of Max Meadows, Va.; one brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Wanda Dunford of Wytheville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Monday, June 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Liberty Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church or at the residence at any time.
