Ocie Mae Carter, 79, of Bastian, Va., died Friday, May 9, 2003, in a Bluefield hospital.

Funeral services were held Sunday, May 11, at 2 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Mortuary Chapel in Bluefield, Va., with the Rev. Alan Ashworth officiating. Burial was in the Maple Hill cemetery.

She was born at Grapefield, Va. She attended the Green Valley United Methodist Church at Grapefield, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Pat Carter; her parents, Harman Carter and Minnie Kidd Carter; and two brothers, Martin Carter and Ray Carter.

Survivors include three sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Charles Akers of Rocky Gap, Va., Shirley and William Walker of Bland, Va., and Irene Heilman of Bastian, Va.; a special nephew and his spouse, Gilbert and Rena Walker of Bastian, Va.; two sisters-in-law, Helen Carter of Bastian and Florence Carter of Springville, Va.; and several other nieces and nephews.

Donations may be made to the Green Valley United Methodist Church, c/o Lisa Walker, Route 1, Box 32A, Bland, VA 24315.

Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, Va., was in charge of the arrangements.

Blanche K. Compton

Blanche K. Compton, 82, of Rocky Gap, Va., died Friday, May 9, 2003, at her residence.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 12, at 11 a.m. at the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel in Bland, Va., with the Rev. Lee McIntosh officiating. Interment followed in the Temple Hill cemetery.

She was born Jan. 21, 1921, and was a lifelong resident of Bland County, Va. She was a member of the Bastian Union Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe B. Compton; her parents, John H. and Straus H. Kinser; and two sisters, Eloise K. Stowers and Eileen K. Wagner.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Melinda C. and Jerry Belcher of Rocky Gap, Va., and Nancy C. and Mike Huskins of Cedar Grove, N.C.; a son and daughter-in-law, John F. and Brenda Compton of Oakwood, Va.; a sister and brother-in-law, Nannie Rose and Buford Tiller of Rocky Gap, Va.; a brother and sister-in-law, H.M. "Buddy" and Anne Kinser of Bastian, Va.; two granddaughters, Mary Belcher and Jennifer Belcher; two grandsons, Wes Huskins and Adam Huskins; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Ruby Roland, members of the Bland County Senior Citizens, Ilee McGlen and Sherry Belcher.

Norma Jean Eversole

Norma Jean Eversole, 68, of Max Meadows, Va., died Friday, May 9, 2003.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 13, at 11 a.m. at the St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church in the Fort Chiswell section of Max Meadows, Va., with the Rev. David Wood, the Rev. Henry Ayers Jr. and the Rev. James Black officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

She was a member of St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton Elwood Eversole; and her parents, Eugene and Edna Porter.

Survivors include two sons, James R. "Jim" Eversole of Elizabeth Town, Ky., and Edward C. "Eddie" Eversole of Max Meadows, Va.; two daughters and son-in-law, Anita Eversole, and Brenda and Dennis Robinson, all of Max Meadows, Va.; one brother and sister-in-law, Doug and Loma Porter of Wytheville, Va.; three sisters and brother-in-law, Frances Waddell, Wanda Garland, and Kay and Loring Pattison, all of Wytheville, Va.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Monday, May 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville, Va., and Tuesday, May 13, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. (service time) at the St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church.

John Luther Fisher

John Luther Fisher, 81, of Manassas, Va., died Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at Prince William Hospital, Manassas, Va.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 15, at 10:30 a.m. at the Price Funeral Home in Manassas, Va., with the Rev. Rudy Tucker and the Rev. Denise Childers officiating. Interment will be in the Arlington National cemetery, Arlington, Va.

He was born in Max Meadows, Va., Sept. 3, 1921, a son of the late John C. and Mary Blanche Arnold Fisher. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Manassas, Va. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served during World War II and was a POW.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dawn S. Fisher; one daughter and son-in-law, Diane Fisher and Steven Chiknas of Vienna, Va.; and one grandson, Gregory Steven Chiknas.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center Street, Manassas, Va.

Scott Allen Hylton, 43, of Willis, Va., was killed in the line of duty Friday, May 9, 2003.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 13, at 11 a.m. at Topeco Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Mike Varner officiating. Interment will be in Topeco cemetery. Graveside services will be conducted by Floyd Masonic Lodge No. 329 A.F.&A.M.; , Christiansburg Police Honor Guard and the Virginia Army National Guard, Det. 1 Co. B 1st. Bn. 116 Infantry, 29th Infantry Div. (Light).

He was a member of the Christiansburg Police Department, Floyd Masonic lodge No. 329 A.F.&A.M.; , the Virginia Army National Guard, Floyd American Legion Post No. 127 and Topeco Church of the Brethren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Landon Allen Hylton; a brother Lyndon L. Hylton; and his grandparents, Earnest and Ruby Hubbard and Ferry and Odell Hylton.

Survivors include his wife, Khris L. Hylton of Willis, Va.; daughter, Kayelin Darlene Hylton of Willis, Va.; three sons, Justin Hylton, Jonathan Hylton and Jordan Hylton, all of Willis, Va.; his parents, Jack and Darlene Hylton of Willis, Va.; a sister, Trina Darlene Hylton of Radford, Va.; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Gene and Linda Schwidde of Wytheville, Va.

Virgil V. Vaught

Virgil V. Vaught, 83, of Narrows, Va., died Friday, May 9, 2003, at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, Va.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 12, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows, Va., with the Rev. Clarence Dillon and the Rev. Gerald Hilton officiating. Burial was in Birchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg, Va., with graveside rites conducted by the American Legion Post, the V.F.W. Post No. 6000 both of Narrows, and Post No. 311 Pembroke, Va.

Born in Giles County, Va., on Aug. 29, 1919, he served in the U.S. Army for three and one half years during World War II. He retired from Celanese Corporation in 1984, having worked 44 years as a millwright. He was a member of the First Church of God, Rich Creek, Va.; and American Legion, Post 68, Narrows, Va.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jess and Ada Fletcher Vaught; four sisters, Mae Reed, Louise Marcus, Betty Booth and Lucille Thomas; and five brothers, Earl Vaught, Clifford Vaught, Cecil Vaught, Jack Vaught and Clarence Vaught.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Edna Wright Vaught of the home; a daughter, Cheryl Robertson of Knoxville, Tenn.; a son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Linda Vaught of Narrows, Va.; five sisters, Marie White Spicer, Martha Beasley, Annie Meadows, Joyce Sloan and Racheal Herman; four brothers, Sylvester Vaught, Charlie Vaught, Bill Vaught and Jesse Vaught; two granddaughters and spouses, Julie and Donny Dicer of Athens, Ga., and Melanie and Dewey Reynolds of Narrows, Va.; three grandsons and spouse, Keith and Rhonda Vaught of Jacksonville, N.C., Chris Robertson of Atlanta, Ga., and Cody Rose of Narrows, Va.; four great-grandchildren, Logan Rice and River Lang of Narrows, Va., Zachary and Amari Vaught of Jacksonville, N.C.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Helen Elizabeth Watkins

Helen Elizabeth Watkins, 86, of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, May 10, 2003.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 13, at 2 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel in Bland, Va., with the Rev. Raymond Vanover officiating.

She was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith and was a lifelong resident of Wytheville, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Houston Watkins Sr.; one son, Houston Watkins Jr.; and her parents, the Rev. Robert and Ellie Smith.

Survivors six sons, James Watkins, Joseph Watkins, John David Cregger and Mickey Roberts, all of Wytheville, Va., Robert Lee Kading of Bland, Va., and Lee Roy Watkins of Ashland, Va.; six daughters, Dora Grubb, Mary McFarland and Edna Sutliff, all of Wytheville, Va., Lili Belle Gettig of Colorado, Velvet Thacker of Ashland, Va., and Elsie Monahen of Marion, Va.; 22 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.

Wilbur Vencen Buchanan

Wilbur Vencen Buchanan, 79, of Wytheville, Va., died Friday, June 20, 2003, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 23, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Arthur Chapman officiating. Interment will follow in the New Bethel cemetery. American Legion Post No. 9 will conduct graveside military rites.

He was born April 14, 1924, in Wythe County, Va., a son of the late Mitchell and Laura Porter Buchanan. He was retired from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel Buchanan; one daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Alan Rogers of Richmond, Va.; two stepsons, Kenneth Sargent and Keith Sargent; one grandson, Jason Bryant of Richmond, Va.; a special nephew, David Sheffey; special caregivers, Martha Repass and Carolyn Repass; and three other nephews.

Lottie Jane Lambert Crigger

Lottie Jane Lambert Crigger, 87, of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, June 21, 2003.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 25, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville, Va., with Evangelist Gregory Dill officiating. Interment will be in the Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church cemetery.

She was a member of the Stony Fork Community Church.

She was preceded in death by a son, W. Cecil Crigger; and her parents, William A. and Minnie Clark Lambert.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Lloyd W. Crigger of Wytheville, Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Ronnie Dooley of Wytheville, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Jo Crigger of Blue Ridge, Va., and David and Linda Crigger of Wytheville, Va.; two brothers and sister-in-law, Junior Lambert, and Raymond and Ollie Lambert, all of Little Creek section of Bland County, Va.; four grandchildren and spouses, Chris and Regina Crigger of Blue Ridge, Va., Jennifer and Rodney Holcomb of Bluefield, W.Va., David E. Crigger of Wytheville, Va., and Amanda Dooley of Bluefield, W.Va.; two great-grandchildren, Sean Holcomb and Megan Crigger; and a special friend, Luella Corder Farmer of Wytheville, Va.

Leona Priscilla Doss Crowder

Leona Priscilla Doss Crowder, 91, of Welch, W.Va., formerly of Austinville, Va., died Friday, June 20, 2003, in the Welch Community Hospital, Welch, W.Va.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 23, at 11 a.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel in Austinville, Va., with the Rev. Larry Buckland officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany cemetery in Poplar Camp section of Wythe County, Va.

She was born Jan. 23, 1912, in Kimball, W.Va. She was a former member of the Sheeptown Church of God and a member of the Big Four Pentecostal Holiness Church in Welch, W.Va.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas Doss; her second husband, the Rev. Martin Crowder; her parents, Levi and Virgie Richards Burks; and several sisters and brothers.

Survivors include a granddaughter, Priscilla Myers of Welch, W.Va.; six stepdaughters, Elsie Porterfield of Gladys, Va., Swansia Scarberry of Moneta, W.Va., Mrs. Herbert (Aileen) Sisk, Zola Shorter and Mary Frazier, all of Austinville, Va., and Mildred King of Bristol, Tenn.; one stepson, Martin Crowder Jr. of Proctorville, Ohio; a half brother, Harry Collier of Florida; 38 stepgrandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Virginia Kirkland Gibson

Virginia Kirkland Gibson, 93, of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, June 21, 2003, at her residence.

A memorial services will be held Wednesday, June 25, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Wade Tucker officiating. Interment will be in Green Hills Memorial Gardens, Cedar Bluff, Va.

She was born May 4, 1910, in Tacoma, Wash. She moved from Richlands, Va., to Wytheville, Va., 22 years ago and was a retired hospital clinic administrator. She was a member of the Wytheville Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Summerfield Gibson; her parents, Harry P. and Lilie Jack Kirkland; and two sisters, Erma Gilmore and Irene Gerlach.

She is survived by one daughter, Gail Gose of Johnson City, Tenn.; one son, Richard Kirkland "Kirk" Gibson of Wytheville, Va.; and three grandchildren, Katherine Gibson of Charlotte, N.C., Rebecca Haworth of Johnson City, Tenn., and Richard F. Gose of Conway, S.C.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 25, from noon until 1 p.m. (service time) at the Barnett Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Wytheville Baptist Church.
