Shirley Lenett Carp

Shirley Lenett Carp, 80, of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Asbury Place, Wytheville, Va.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, April 15, at 11 a.m. at Monte Vista cemetery in Bluefield, W.Va., with Rabbi Beth Jacowitz officiating. The funeral procession to Monte Vista cemetery will leave Barnett Funeral Home, Wytheville, on Tuesday, April 15, at 9:30 a.m.

Born March 21, 1923, in Bluefield, W.Va., she resided in Wytheville, Va., for the past 56 years. She was co-owner with her husband of Carp’s Department Store in Wytheville, Va., for 35 years; an active volunteer in local charities; and a member of Congregation Ahavath Shalom in Bluefield, W.Va.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Marvin Lenett of Pulaski.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Carl Carp of Wytheville; a son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Linda Carp of Rochester, N.Y.; a daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Cliff Williams of New Orleans, La.; a brother and sister-in-law, Sidney and Jean Lenett of Wytheville, Va.; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Monday, April 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville, Va.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to a charity of choice.

Elsie Katherine Dunn

Elsie Katherine Dunn, 84, of Charlottesville, Va., died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Winterhaven in Charlottesville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 14, at 2 p.m. at Hill & Wood Funeral Chapel in Charlottesville, Va. Burial will be held Tuesday, April 15, at 1 p.m. at the family cemetery in Bland, Va.

She attended Radford College where she received her teaching certificate. She taught in a one-room school at Arrowhead from 1937-1940. She was later employed by Michie Company as an editor from August 1940 until her retirement in January 1982.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Thomas Dunn and Annie Kegley Dunn; three brothers, J.T. Dunn, Paul Dunn and Julian Dunn; and a life-long friend, Catherine Harvey.

Survivors include her sister, Elizabeth "Libby" Bird of Bland, Va.; five nieces, four nephews; and special friends, Vickie Williams and the Harvey family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Suite 200, Charlottesville, VA 22911.

Robert Eley Johnson

Robert Eley Johnson, 84, of Wytheville, Va., died Friday, April 11, 2003.

A memorial service will be held Monday, April 14, at 2 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Leland Smith officiating.

He attended Fishburne Military Academy, the University of Missouri and the University of North Carolina, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After retiring as president of R.P. Johnson Sons, he was Wythe County Planner, executive director of Wythe County Industrial Development Corp. and was founding president of Virginia Economic Development Association. He was one of the leaders in establishing Wytheville Community College and was a former member of its board. He was a founding director and first secretary of Wythe County Chamber of Commerce; first president of Wythe County Community Hospital's board of directors; and a charter member of Wytheville Recreation Commission, the Wythe County Community Concert Association and Wythe United Fund. He served for many years as secretary-treasurer of the Smyth-Wythe Airport Commission. He was chairman of the Wythe County Bi-Centennial Committee. He was past president of Wytheville Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow, and a Skelton Fellow. A lifelong member of St. John's Episcopal Church, he had served as a lay reader and vestryman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ovid Montague and Nellie Maie Eley Johnson; his son, Forrest Powell Johnson; and a sister, Betsy Corns Chambers.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Powell Johnson of Wytheville, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Sherry Johnson, Thomas and Patricia Johnson, and Carol Johnson Kitts; grandchildren, Bramley Johnson, Henley Johnson, Allison Johnson and Courtney Johnson; one stepgrandson and his spouse, J.B. and Michelle Kitts; and two great-stepgrandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that friends consider a gift to Wytheville Community College Scholarship Fund or St. John's Episcopal Church, Wytheville, Va.

James Allen "Jimmy" Leedy

James Allen "Jimmy" Leedy, 66, of Rural Retreat, Va., died Friday, April 11, 2003, in Asbury Place, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 14, at 11 a.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel in Rural Retreat, Va., with the Rev. Tony Perry and the Rev. Will Shewey officiating. Interment was in the Black Lick cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, Va.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bertie Mae Umbarger Leedy and Raymond Gleeves Leedy; a daughter Peggy Sue "Susie" Stowers; and a brother, William Harry "Bill" Leedy.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Gordon Leedy of Rural Retreat, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Evelyn Leedy, and Eugene and Vickie Leedy, all of Rural Retreat, Va.; four grandchildren, Samantha Leedy, Tanya Leedy, Jeffery Leedy Jr. and Zachary Leedy; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Black Lick cemetery Fund, the Rural Retreat Volunteer Fire Department, or the Rural Retreat Volunteer Emergency Services.

Jack Albert Arnold

Jack Albert Arnold, 75, of Austinville, Va., died Sunday, March 16, 2003, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 19, at 11 a.m. at the Liberty Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church in the Piney section of Wythe County, Va., with the Rev. Bobby Lewis officiating. Interment will be in the Mt. Zion cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, Va. He was a member of the Liberty Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church and was a former employee of the town of Wytheville, Va. He was a U.S. Marine veteran.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Lewis and Emma Louise Harold Arnold; and a grandson, Johnathan David Arnold.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Jane Irvin Arnold; four daughters and sons-in-law, Shelia Irene and James Kenney of Austinville, Va., Linda and Jerry King of Westfield, N.C., Jackie and Leon Goad of Hillsville, Va., and Lisa Diane Weatherman of Wytheville, Va.; four sons and daughters-in-law, George and Eleanor Arnold of Pinnacle, N.C., Keith and Wilma Arnold, William Douglas Arnold, and Timothy W. Arnold, all of Rural Retreat, Va.; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret Elizabeth Harmon, Elvie and Ram Dunford, Josephine Akers, Ida and Bobby Arnold, all of Rural Route, Wytheville, Va.; 25 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Liberty Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church or at the residence of his daughter, Shelia Kenney, at any time.

Nell Francis Bird

Nell Francis Bird, 91, of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at Asbury Place in Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 17, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Dr. Donald Stansell officiating. Interment will be in the Roselawn cemetery, Marion, Va.

Born Dec. 27, 1911, in Marion, Va., she was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Wytheville, Va. She was a past member of the Wythe County Community Hospital Auxiliary, the Wednesday Club, Wilderness Road D.A.R., Moribana Garden Club, and several bridge groups.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Bird; her parents, Lewis Preston and Mary Sherwood Francis; a sister and brother-in-law, Roxie and Bill Wolfe; and three brothers and sisters-in-law, Ted and Lillian Francis, Percy and Faye Francis, and Jim and Marguerite Francis.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy Bird and Edward Wilson of Wytheville, Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, Paul Edmond and Patricia Bird of Arlington, Va.; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Wilson, Beth Wilson Dowdy, Michael Bird, Catherine Bird Eagleton and Caroline Bird; and three great-grandchildren, Madisyn Dowdy, Alyssa Dowdy and Riley Dowdy.

The family will receive friends Monday, March 17, from 1 to 2 p.m. (service time) at the Barnett Funeral Home.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make donations to St. Paul United Methodist Church or Asbury Place in Wytheville, Va.

John Darren Coe

John Darren Coe, 34, of Wytheville, Va., died Sunday, March 16, 2003, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 20, at 2 p.m. at Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat, Va.

He was a graduate of George Wythe High School and New River Community College.

He is survived by his parents, Charles E. and Ruth Coe of Wytheville, Va.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Janice C. and H.B. Umberger Jr., and Faith C. Umberger, all of Wytheville, Va.; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles Perry and Leigh Ann Coe of Wytheville, Va.; five nephews, Lirk Umberger, Landon Umberger, Jared Umberger, Parker Coe and Peyton Coe; two nieces, Stacie Umberger and Cara Umberger; a great-niece, Emily Umberger; special cousins, Todd Coe and Allen Coe; and special friends, Dee and Sissy Kitts, Tony and Jane Smelser, and David Carter.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the West End United Methodist Church Building Fund or the Wythe County Rescue Squad.

Mike Donald Crouse

Mike Donald Crouse, 68, of Crockett, Va., died Sunday, March 23, 2003, at his residence.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, March 27, at 11 a.m. at the Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Rural Retreat, Va., with the Rev. Doug Stuart officiating.

He was born April 30, 1934, in the Black Lick section of Rural Retreat, Va., a son of the late George and Ella Mae Hale Crouse.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Lucille Crouse of the home; three sons and a daughter-in-law, John Crouse of Glade Spring, Va., Gary Crouse of Rural Retreat, Va., and Carl and Rhonda Crouse of Crockett, Va.; one daughter and son-in-law, Treva and Junior Davidson of Pulaski, Va.; one brother and sister-in-law, James and Pauline Crouse of Rural Retreat, Va.; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Iva Gordon of Thurmond, N.C., Emma Jean Parks of Rural Retreat, Va., and Margaret and Hobert Lowe of Apollo Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Charles E. "Eddie" Hubble

Charles E. "Eddie" Hubble, 72, of Lorton Lick Road, Bluewell, W.Va., died Monday, March 24, 2003, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 27, at 1 p.m. at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell, W.Va., with the Rev. Omar Burns officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens on Courthouse Road, Princeton, W.Va.

Born Jan. 31, 1931, in Ceres, Va., he had been a resident of Bluewell, W.Va., for 42 years and was the owner of Hubble Grading and Lumber Company for 21 years. At the time of his death, he was retired from Swope Construction Company because of his health. He had worked on several highway construction sites in West Virginia and Virginia and strip mining sites of Jr. Pocahontas Coal Company, Joe Turley Coal Company, Anderson and Anderson Coal Company, and Tom Seay Construction Company. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, member of the Ceres Alumni Association and attended the Wilderness Creek Church of God.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Andrew Hubble and Mary Virginia Umbarger Hubble; an infant daughter; and two brothers, W.A. Hubble Jr. and Warren Calvin Hubble.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Ann Hodges Hubble of Lorton Lick Road, Bluewell, W.Va.; a son, Calvin Edward Hubble of the home; a sister, Virgil Ann Britton of Route 1, Ceres, Va.; and a special friend, Kelly Hubbard.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 26, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell, W.Va.

Thomas Hadden Humphreys Jr.

Capt. Thomas Hadden Humphreys Jr., 96, of Roanoke, Va., formerly of Max Meadows, Va., died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, in Roanoke, Va.

A family graveside service will be held Sunday, March 30, at the Draper Valley Presbyterian Church cemetery with Dr. Corty Cooper officiating.

A son of Thomas H. Humphreys Sr. and Beulah C. Botefuhr Humphreys, he received his law degree from the University of Arkansas. He was assistant attorney general of Arkansas prior to World War II. In 1942 he was made Lt. JG in the Navy Reserve. During the war he was stationed on Attu in the Aleutian Islands. He served in Manila during the Japanese war trials as a civilian legal counsel. Following the war, he accepted a commission in the Navy's Judge Advocate General's office with the rank of Lt. Commander. He served on Guam, in Washington, D.C., Boston and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Upon retirement, he lived in Roanoke, Va., and Max Meadows, Va. for the past 40 years. He was a lifelong Presbyterian and Democrat. He was a member of Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death in 1954 by his wife of 47 years, Margaret Mae Mastin Humphreys.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas H. III and Verna Humphreys of Harrison, Ark.; three daughters and son-in-law, Reata Atkinson of Jacksonville, Ark., Cathy Hurst of Roanoke, Va., and Al and Margot Walthall Jolly of Madison, N.C.; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and a special nephew and his wife, Pat and Evelyn Humphreys of Springfield, Va.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church, 2755 Old Baltimore Road, Draper, VA 24324.

Visitation will be held Saturday, March 29, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the home of his daughter Cathy Hurt in Roanoke, Va.

Richard E. "Woody" Bralley Sr.

Richard E. "Woody" Bralley Sr., 63, of Speedwell, Va., died Monday, April 7, 2003, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 10, at 11 a.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel in Wytheville, Va. Interment will be in the Speedwell United Methodist Church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Josie Richmond Bralley of Speedwell, Va.; one son, Richard E. "Woody" Bralley Jr. of Speedwell, Va.; two sisters, Mildred Bralley of Speedwell, Va., and Wanda Sue Stroupe of Rural Retreat, Va.; a brother, David Russel Bralley of Speedwell, Va.; and a grandson, Joseph Lee Bralley.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel.
