Lillie Virginia Arnold, 93, of Fries, Va., died Monday, March 3, 2003, in the Waddell Nursing Home, Galax, Va.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 7, at 2 p.m. at the Providence United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gloria Lancaster Rhudy and the Rev. Lacy King officiating. Interment will be in the Providence cemetery.

She was born Oct. 27, 1909, a daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin and Nannie Melvina Parks Arnold.

She is survived by three sisters, Rosa Shupe of Fries, Va., Ethel Smythers of the Piney section of Wythe County, Va., and Elizabeth Turner of Max Meadows, Va.; a brother, Cloyde Arnold of Cooksville, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home in Galax, Va., is in charge of the arrangements.

Ricky Lynn Coake

Ricky Lynn Coake, 51, of Max Meadows, Va., died Monday, March 3, 2003, in Costa Rica.

Arrangements are pending.

Houston F. Casteel

Houston F. Casteel, 85, of Wytheville, Va., died Wednesday, March 19, 2003 in Baltimore, Md.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 22, at 10 a.m. at the Hubbard Funeral Home, Baltimore, Md. Interment will be in Meadowridge Memorial Park in Baltimore, Md.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Casteel; three brothers, Virgil Casteel, Carson Casteel, and Hobart Casteel; and a sister, Carmen Casteel.

Survivors include one son, Danny Casteel of Kentucky; three daughters, Rosemary Qureshi, Carol O'Brien and Freida Ford, all of Baltimore, Md.; a brother, Huey Casteel; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Friday, March 21, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hubbard Funeral Home.

Joseph A. Cooper Sr., 86, of Wytheville, Va., died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, in the Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax, Va.

Edith "Edy" Colley Irvin

Edith "Edy" Colley Irvin, 63, of Rural Retreat, Va., died Thursday, March 20, 2003, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 23, at 2 p.m. at the Summit Baptist Church with the Rev. Donald Tate and the Rev. Jody Blevins officiating. Interment will follow in the Blue Springs cemetery.

She was born in Buchanan County, Va., on Jan. 11, 1940. She was a member of the Summit Baptist Church and was a retired school teacher with the Wythe County School System.

She was preceded in death by her father, Holiday Colley.

Survivors include her husband, H. Dean Irvin of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Kirby Sage of Rural Retreat, Va.; one son, Randal Irvin of Rural Retreat, Va.; her mother, Grace Keene Colley of Vansant, Va.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred and Juanita Colley of Blacksburg, Va., and Frank and Freida Colley of Vansant, Va.; a foster brother and his wife, George and Margaret Looney of Vansant, Va.; three grandchildren, Chris Sage, Justin Sage and Dusty Sage; two great-grandchildren, Autumn Sage and Wyatt Sage; and 13 nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, March 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home at the residence at any time.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Virginia's Hospice, P.O. Box 257, Rural Retreat, VA 24368.

Frances "Frankie" Hudson Bass, 69, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Wythe County, Va., died Thursday, March 6, 2003.

Funeral service will be held Monday, March 10, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in the West End cemetery in Wytheville, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James D. "Jim" Bass; her parents, John H. and Goldie Wheeler Hudson; two sisters, Margaret Ratcliff and Elizabeth Dunford; and two brothers, James E. Hudson and John H. Hudson Jr.

Survivors include five daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie Davis of Columbus, Ohio, Cheryl and Jack Montoney of Groveport, Ohio, Brenda and Charles Longwell of Pickerington, Ohio, Annette and Peter Renault of Pickerington, Ohio, and Melody and Jeff Monahan of Groveport, Ohio; one son and daughter-in-law, James Duane Jr. and Donna Bass of Cincinnati, Ohio; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Jean and Garl Smythers of Port Richie, Fla., Louise and Steve Lins of Sabillasville, Md., Beulah and Howard Dunford of Johnson City, Tenn., and Becky and Harry Rogers of Max Meadows, Va.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert O. "Bobby" and Callie Hudson of Wytheville, Va., Ted S. and Phyllis Hudson of Christiansburg, Va., and Wayne and Bonnie Hudson of Max Meadows, Va.; 15 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

The family will receive friends Sunday, March 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

Ricky Lynn Coake

Ricky Lynn Coake, 51, of the Graham's Forge community of Max Meadows, Va., died Monday, March 3, 2003, in Costa Rica.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 9, at 3 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Sonny Ayers, Pastor Donald Drake and the Rev. Raymond Coake officiating. Interment will follow in at the Bethany United Methodist Church cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, Va., a son of the late Homer Lawrence Coake and Cassie Fowler Coake. He was president of Coake and Sons Electric Company in Pulaski, Va.

He is survived by two sons and daughters, Richard Brent and Hope Coake of Draper, Va., and Randel Brian and Venessa Coake of Max Meadows, Va.; three grandchildren, Kaitlynn Brié Anne Coake, Landon Brent Coake, and Jacob Brian Coake; two stepgrandchildren, Brandon Caldwell and Brian Caldwell; one sister, Sandra Coake Breeding of Johnson City, Tenn.; one brother and sister-in-law, Homer Ronnie and Sally Coake of Draper, Va.; three nieces, Tonya Crigger, Amanda Parks and Megan Parks; two nephews, Robert H. Parks III, and Todd Coake; his best friend, Star; one grandniece, two grandnephews and many special friends.

The family will receive friends Saturday, March 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home or at the residence at any time.

Bobby J. Coleman

Bobby J. Coleman, 65, of Highland Springs, Va., formerly of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, March 1, 2003.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 4, at 11 a.m. at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, Va. Interment was in the Washington Memorial Park.

He was born in Virginia on April 30, 1937.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Edith Coleman.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Coleman; one daughter, Vickie Tipton; one son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Cindi Coleman; one stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Sherry and Ricky Hutchinson; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild; two stepgrandchildren, and two great-stepgrandchildren; three sisters, Freda Bohannon of Richmond, Va., Daisy Fisher of Wytheville, Va., and Debbie Spaulding of Tazewell, Tenn.; two brothers, Donald Coleman and Vance Coleman, both of Wytheville, Va.

Donna Caudill Crigger

Donna Caudill Crigger, 94, of Speedwell, Va., died Friday, March 7, 2003.

Funeral services will be Sunday, March 9, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Doug Stuart. Interment will be in the Speedwell United Methodist Church cemetery, Speedwell, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Emmitt Crigger; and a son, Warren W. Crigger.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Edward Price and Cheryl Crigger of Speedwell, Va.; four grandchildren, Annette Huber of Baltimore, Md., Joseph Crigger of Tega Cay, S.C., Denise Crigger of Fredericksburg, Va., and Darlene Mueller of Baltimore, Md.; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Saturday, March 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

Leonard Ray Hamm

Leonard Ray Hamm, 57, of Groseclose, Va., died Thursday, March 6, 2003, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 8, at 3 p.m. at Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel in Marion, Va., with the Rev. Fed Parker, the Rev. Bill Gravely and the Rev. Bradley Tilson officiating. Interment will be in Wassum cemetery with military honors conducted by the Francis Marion VFW Post No. 4667.

He was born in Gambrills, Md., and had worked at Virginia House Furniture for over 26 years. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, having served in Vietnam. He was a member of the American Legion Post 18, the Francis Marion VFW Post No. 4667 and was active with the Disabled American Veterans.

He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Ray Hamm.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Tilson Hamm of Groseclose, Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, Joshua and Amanda Ham of Groseclose, Va.; one daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Wayne Crotts of Groseclose, Va.; his mother, Ruby Marie Blevins Hamm of Groseclose, Va.; brothers, sisters and their spouses, Louise and Conley Parks of Wytheville, Va., Evelyn and Wesley Pickel of Groseclose, Va., Carl and Lana Hamm of Groseclose, Va., Virginia Glass of Groseclose, Va., Richard Hamm of Marion, Va., Kenneth and Sandy Hamm of Atkins, Va., Edward and Sue Hamm of Groseclose, Va., and Sally and Bill Crotts of Roanoke, Va.; and grandchildren, Laken Gilliam, Sidney Umphrey, Kaitlyn Hamm and Dillon Ray Crotts.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.

Willie Elizabeth "Billie" Wymer Blankenship, 82, of the Crandon community in Bland County, Va., died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at Wheatland Hills Retirement Center, Radford, Va.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 29, at A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home in White Gate, Va., with the Rev. Henry Allen Conley and the Rev. Joe M. Taylor officiating. Burial will be in the Mechanicsburg cemetery, Mechanicsburg, Va.

She was born Oct. 9, 1920, in Marion, Va.

She was preceded in death in 1985 by her husband, Harold Thomas "Bill" Blankenship Sr.; her parents, James Rhudy Wymer and Bessie Mae Carrico; a sister, Mary Wymer Dixon; and brother, Sydney Wymer.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, James W. and Barbara Blankenship of Pulaski, Va., and Harold T. Jr. and Ella Jean Blankenship of Woodstock, Ga.; two daughters and son-in-law, Rebecca B. and Kenneth Brim of Christiansburg, Va., and Michelle Blankenship-Taylor of Roanoke, Va.; grandchildren and their spouses, Jennifer B. and Jeff Repass, Jeannette B. and Jeff Jones, all of Pulaski, Va., Kristol B. and Mark Dudley of Roanoke, Va., and Harold T. Blankenship III of Alexandria, Va.; two great-grandchildren, Kenley Elizabeth Jones and Audrey Rebecca Jones; a sister, Josephine W. Davidson of Marion, Va.; a brother, Walter W. "Doc" Wymer of Pearisburg, Va.; two sisters-in-law, Isabelle G. Blankenship of Roanoke, Va., and Lola C. Wymer of Wytheville, Va.; 19 nieces and nephews; many cousins; special friends, the family of Elmer and Lenora Chewning, and Joanne M. Bingham of Radford, Va.; and many special neighbors and former co-workers.

The family will receive friends Friday, March 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home, White Gate, Va.

Conley Brown "C.B." Martin, 70, of Rural Retreat, Va., died Thursday March 6, 2003.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 11, at 2 p.m. at the Speedwell United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Scott Atkins. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be taken in the church one hour prior to service time.

He was the son of late Samuel A. and Ovella Kincer Martin, and a U.S. Navy veteran.

He is survived by three brothers and sisters-in-law, Dr. Samuel Jr. and Annette Martin of Wytheville, Va., Joe and Virginia Martin of Richmond, Va., and David Lee Martin of Rural Retreat, Va.; special niece, Renita Jones of Germany; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friend Monday, March 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.
