Shirley Ann Ashe Smith

Shirley Ann Ashe Smith of Wytheville, Va., died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 23, at 3 p.m. at the Franklin Street United Methodist Church, Wytheville, Va.

She was born in Pocahontas, Va., and was educated in the Tazewell County Public School System. She also attended Bluefield State College, Bluefield, W.Va. She was a Silhouette of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. of Beckley Southern West Virginia Alumni Chapter. She received certification in American Banking from the American Institute of Banking through Wytheville Community College. She worked as a teacher's aide in the Wythe County Public Schools and at First National Exchange Bank in Wytheville, Va. Because of illness, she retired on disability in 1979. She was a member of Franklin Street United Methodist Church in Wytheville, Va., a former president of the Women's Society of Christian Services and served as a soloist in the community. On June 2, 1956, she married Ernest E. Smith Sr.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Taft and Katherine Kendrick Ashe; and two brothers, Billy Ashe and Michael Ashe.

Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Ernest E. Smith Sr. of Wytheville, Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Marshall Murray; a son and daughter-in-law, Ernest E. Jr. and Dixie Smith; a brother and sister-in-law, Jerry Allen and Elizabeth A. Ashe; five grandchildren, Brianna, Demetrick, Trey, Leann, and Devin; one great-grandchild, Maliah; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and friends.

The family will receive friends Sunday, March 23, from 2 to 3 p.m. (service time) at the Franklin Street United Methodist Church.

Chapel Funeral Home in Bluefield, W.Va., and Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville, Va., are in charge of the arrangements.

Ruth Hilton Phillippi

Ruth Hilton Phillippi, 88, of the Cedar Springs community in Rural Retreat, Va., died Monday, March 3, 2003, at her home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 6, at 1 p.m. at the Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. J. Scott Adkins and the Rev. Michael Hoyle officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, Va., and was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen Guy Phillippi; one daughter, Dixie Aileen P. Ireson; her parents, Leland Wise and Leona Waddell Hilton; two sisters, Zella Kitts and Reba Minor; and one brother, Frank Hilton.

Survivors include four nieces, Jean Burnett of Marietta, Ga., Lois Lucas of Michigan, Louise Warner of Pennsylvania, and Patsy Pope of Fayetteville, N.C.; four nephews, Harold Minor of Dickson, Tenn., Richard Phillippi, Pete Phillippi and John Phillippi, all of Wytheville, Va.; and several grandnieces, grandnephews, other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home or at the residence at any time.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Volunteer Fire Department or to the Rural Retreat Emergency Services.

Catherine Foote Griffis

Catherine Foote Griffis, 85, of Rural Retreat, Va., died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, in Asbury Place in Wytheville, Va.

Graveside services will be held Friday, April 11, at 2 p.m. at the West End cemetery in Wytheville, Va., with Steve Smith officiating.

She was born in Wytheville, Va. She was a member of the Wytheville Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Elmer Griffis; her parents, James D. and Lady Byrd Miller Foote; one sister, Patty Lipinski; and one brother, James Foote.

Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Margaret Peggy Foote of Florida, and Ginnie Griffis of Silver Spring, Md.; one brother-in-law, Richard Griffis of Silver Spring, Md.; an aunt, Zephanna Miller of Wytheville, Va.; several nieces and nephews; and many cousins including a special cousin, Sue Govin of Max Meadows, Va.

The family will receive friends Thursday, April 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home.

Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be made to the Hospice of Southwest Virginia, 600 West Ridge Road, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Dondee Alice Stoots Swecker

Dondee Alice Stoots Swecker, 76, of Pulaski, Va., died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at the University of North Carolina Hospital, Chapel Hill, N.C.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 21, at 11 a.m. at the Bower Funeral Chapel in Pulaski, Va., with Pastor Jerry Collins and Pastor L.J. Rippey officiating. Interment was in the Bethany cemetery in the Poplar Camp section of Wythe County, Va.

She was born Oct. 9, 1927, in Wythe County, Va. and was a member of the Pulaski Church of God on Bob White Blvd., Pulaski, Va.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur Stoots and Gertrude Worrell Stoots; four sisters, Mannie, Bessie, Laura and Hazel; and three brothers, Orel, George and Robert.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Thomas Haymon Swecker of Pulaski, Va.; a son, Doug Swecker of Pulaski, Va.; a daughter, Sue Dicker of Barren Springs, Va.; four granddaughters, Rhonda Hinkley, Jennifer Abdelwahed, Holly Duncan and Christy Lowe; seven stepgrandchildren; two brothers and sister-in-law, Ray and Nancy Stoots of Pulaski, Va., and Coy Stoots of Barren Springs, Va.; and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Threcia "Dot" and Andrew Matney of Dublin, Va., Edith and Robert E. Lee Jones of Pulaski, Va., and Violet and Howard Viars of Bassett, Va.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Pulaski Church of God, P.O. Box 2109, Pulaski, VA 24301.

Melissa Fay Britnell Sult

Melissa Fay Britnell Sult, 29, of Wytheville, Va., died Monday, March 17, 2003, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 18, at 7 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church in Wytheville, Va., with Pastor Donald Drake officiating. Interment will be in Hillcrest cemetery, Haughton, La.

She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and a former employee of Kmart.

She was preceded in death by a stepbrother, Tony Freeman of Monroe, La.

Survivors include her husband, David Sult; a son, Timothy Harrell Sult of the home; mother and stepfather, Patricia and Frank Morgan of Princeton, La.; father and stepmother, Steve and Suzanne Britnell of Monroe, La.; a sister and brother-in-law, Cheryl and Jerry McCombs of Lake Charles, La.; three stepsisters, Lola Karowski, Charlotte Strickland and Amy Davis, all of Maiden, La.; a stepbrother, Ted Freeman of Monroe, La.; maternal grandparents, P.A. and Mildred Crews of Princeton, La.; and paternal grandmother, Katherine Skains of Bossier City, La.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 18, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Fellowship Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Jude Children's Hospital.

Edna Mozelle Stroupe Miller

Edna Mozelle Stroupe Miller, 87, of Wytheville, Va., died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 15, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Steve Johnson officiating. Interment will be in the West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

She was a charter member of the West End United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Lula Stroupe; two brothers, Cecil Stroupe and Raymond Stroupe; and a son-in-law, Charles Smith.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Dean Odell Miller; a daughter Betty Miller Smith of Wytheville, Va.; a son, Robert Miller of Martinsville, Va.; a son, Robert Miller of Martinsville, Va.; a grandson and his wife, Todd and Julia Smith of Roanoke, Va.; two granddaughters, Megan Miller of Harrisonburg, Va., and Blair Miller of Midlothian, Va.; two great-grandchildren, Hunter Smith and Erin Smith of Roanoke, Va.; two sisters, Pauline Cregger of Wytheville, Va., and Estelle Jackson of Pulaski, Va.; a brother, Vance Stroupe of Pulaski, Va.; three sisters-in-law, Joan Burchett of Wytheville, Va., Opal Cassell of Rural Retreat, Va., and Mabel Sult of Wytheville, Va.; two brothers-in-law, David Miller of Rural Retreat, Va., and James Chapman of Wytheville, Va.; a special niece, Beulah Sult; and many other nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Monday, April 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home or at the home of Betty Miller Smith at any time.

Kyle "Kettlefoot" Lethcoe, 90, of Chilhowie, Va., died Thursday, March 27, 2003, in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, Va.

Graveside funeral services were held Sunday, March 30, at 3:30 p.m. at the Baptist cemetery in Glade Spring, Va., with Pastor Benny Bowman officiating.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen Fields Lethcoe; and a son, Jim Ed Lethcoe.

Survivors include one daughter and sons-in-law, Myrna Jean and Don Barr of Chilhowie, Va., and Ben Tugman of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three sisters, Faye McGlothlin of Algeria, Ohio, Lee Wade of Fredericksburg, Ohio, and Penny Singleton of Abingdon, Va.; one brother, Lester "Pete" Lethcoe of Abingdon, Va.; 11 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Jerry Wayne Stamper Sr.

Jerry Wayne Stamper Sr., 54, of Rural Retreat, Va., died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, in the Veterans Hospital, Salem, Va.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 5, at 1 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel, Rural Retreat, Va., with the Rev. Richard Gregory officiating. Interment will be in the Fairview United Methodist Church cemetery. American Legion Post No. 229 will conduct graveside military rites.

He was born in Chilhowie, Va. He served in the U.S. Army and was a lifetime member of American Legion Post No. 229 and Francis Marion Post No. 4667, VFW. He was a lifetime member of the Rural Retreat Volunteer Emergency Services.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert L. and Lydia Parsons Stamper; two brothers, Steve Stamper and Billy Stamper; and father-in-law, Robert I. Keene Sr.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara K. Stamper; two sons and daughter-in-law, Jerry Wayne Jr. and Brandy Stamper of Haysi, Va., and James David and Jennifer Stamper of Marion, Va.; four daughters and sons-in-law, Angela and John Harris of Saltville, Va., Amy and Glenn Buchanan of Marion, Va., Susan and Richard Stiltner of Saltville, Va., and Heather Stamper of Rural Retreat, Va.; one stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Eddie and Missi Mills of Harrisburg, Pa.; one stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Robyn and Alfred Rosenbaum Jr. of Rural Retreat, Va.; eight brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert W. and Carolyn Stamper, Jimmy and Sue Stamper, Jeff and Rhonda Stamper, Tim and Tina Stamper, all of Marion, Va.; Jack and Mary Stamper of Greenacres City, Fla., John and Connie Stamper of Aurora, Colo., Charles "Buster" Stamper of Chilhowie, Va., and Ray and Cassie Stamper of Chilhowie, Va.; three sisters and sons-in-law, Linda and Jim Mros of Aragon, Ga., Brenda and Gene Hayden of Marion, Va., and Judy and Richard Brisson of Suffolk, Va.; his mother-in-law, Bessie Keene of Rural Retreat, Va.; special friends, Carson Cooper of Marion, Va., and Wayne Henderson of Rugby, Va.; 14 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Roy Vernon Manning

Roy Vernon Manning, 83, of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at Asbury Place in Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 8, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Robert "Bob" Billingsley officiating. Interment will be in the Jackson Family cemetery.

He was born in Galax, Va., a son of the late Roy Clinton and Zollie Moore Manning. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a charter member of the Lead Mines Ruritan Club with 52 years of perfect attendance and was retired from Hobart N. Grubb.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Jackson Manning; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy and Maggie Manning of Dublin, Va., and Stephen and Connie Manning of South Boston, Va.; four grandchildren, Brian Manning, Christian Manning, Karen Cook and Brennan Manning; and one sister-in-law, Dell J. McKenney.

The family will receive friends Monday, April 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

Janie Louise Hudson Marlar, 86, of Max Meadows, Va., died Saturday, April 5, 2003, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 8, at 2 p.m. in the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va., with Pastor Larry Barnes officiating. Interment will be in the West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

She was a longtime member of Pickett's Chapel Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey B. Marlar; her parents, Frank and Bertha Hollingsworth Hudson; two sons-in-law, Harold W. Mabe and Steve Stevenson; and several sisters and brothers.

Survivors include three daughters and a son-in-law, Lois Stevenson of Seaford, Del., Margaret and Franklin McHone of Max Meadows, Va., and Leetha Mabe of Max Meadows, Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, Harvey Elwood and Mary G. Marlar of Rome, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Lucille Hudson of Max Meadows, Va.; a special niece, Iva Jean Smith of Max Meadows, Va.; 10 grandchildren and their spouses including Carol and Steve Ryan of Wytheville, Va., Diana and Jim Lloyd of Rural Retreat, Va., Kenneth and Diane Mabe of Boones Mill, Va., and Danny and Deanna Mabe of Wytheville, Va.; several great-grandchildren and great-stepgrandchildren; and several other nieces and nephews.

Alice Smith McAllister

Alice Smith McAllister, 87, of Roanoke, Va., died Saturday, April 19, 2003.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 21, at 1 p.m. at the Bethany Christian Church, 3115 Fleming Avenue, NW, Roanoke, Va., with Pastor Michael Valentine and Pastor Ronald Smith officiating. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

She was born in the Muskrat section of Wythe County, Va., on Oct. 15, 1915, the fifth of 10 children of the late Edgar and Blanche Smith. In 1937, she married G. Hood McAllister. She was a retired cosmetologist from Smartwear Irving Saks. She was a member of Bethany Christian Church.

She is survived by her husband, Hood McAllister; two sons and daughters-in-law, Eddie and Frances McAllister of Roanoke, Va., David and Mina McAllister of Richmond, Va.; one daughter and son-in-law, Donna Trobaugh and Bill Forbes of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; five grandchildren, Ted McAllister of Cloverdale, Va., Rodney McAllister and Doug McAllister, both of Charlotte, N.C., Alicia McAllister of Virginia Beach, Va., and Andrew McAllister of Richmond, Va.; and three great-grandchildren, Caleb McAllister and Hannah McAllister, both of Cloverdale, Va., and Tate McAllister of Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, E.L. Smith and Fred Smith, both of Wytheville, Va.; and two sisters, Danner Armbrister of Kansas, and Thelma Baumgardner of Roanoke, Va.
