Ruth Carpenter, 74, of Max Meadows, Va., died Monday, July 21, 2003, at the Pulaski Community Hospital, Pulaski, Va.

Funeral services will be Thursday, July 24, at 11 a.m. at the Shorts Creek Church of God in Austinville, Va., with Pastor James E. Gholson, Brother Dale Frazier and Brother Carl White Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the Bethany cemetery, Austinville, Va.

She is survived by her husband, Harvey Carpenter of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Terry Odum of Max Meadows, Va.; two sisters, Dorothy Melton of Max Meadows, Va., and Eunice Burris of Austinville, Va.; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Shorts Creek Church of God in Austinville, Va.

Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel in Hillsville, Va., is in charge of the arrangements.

Zella Irene Gravley

Zella Irene Gravley, 74, of Marion, Va., died Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at the Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion, Va.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, July 24, at 2 p.m. at the Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Rural Retreat, Va., with the Rev. Richard Collins officiating.

She was born in Jefferson, N.C.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert P. Gravley; and her parents, Garnett and Rosa Lee Graybeal.

Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Dewayne Arnold, Peggy and Udale Reed, all of Wythe County, Va., Barbara and Frankie Mulkey of Speedwell, Va., and Sandy Jackson of Ivanhoe, Va.; one brother and sister-in-law, Harden and Bessie Graybeal of Mt. Airy, N.C.; three sisters and brother-in-law, Loanie Jones of Kingsport, Tenn. Ruth Greer of Jefferson, N.C., and Esther and Ralph Henderson of Wytheville, Va.; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Friends may visit at the home of Barbara Mulkey, Grayson Turnpike, Speedwell, Va. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Joanne Jackson Dotson

Joanne Jackson Dotson, 67, of Greensboro, N.C., died Friday, July 25, 2003.

Graveside services and interment will be held Monday, July 28, at 11 a.m. at the Odd Fellows cemetery, Ivanhoe, Va.

She was born in Ivanhoe, Va.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dyer and Erlene Sheffey Jackson; a son, Scotty Dotson; and a sister, Faye Riggins.

Survivors include her husband, John R. Dotson Sr. of Greensboro, N.C.; two sons, John R. Dotson Jr. of Sophia, N.C., and Robert P. Dotson of Greensboro, N.C.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Bobbie Kay and Robert Anderson of Salem, Va., and Judy and George McCrary of Greensboro, N.C.; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Foy and Betty Jackson of Greensboro, N.C., M.D. and Phyllis Jackson of Fries, Va., Roger and Patty Jackson of Austinville, Va., and Ranny and June Jackson of Howell, N.J.; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Nannie Wagner Dillow King

Nannie Wagner Dillow King, 84, of Bland, Va., died Monday, July 28, 2003, at Bluefield Regional Medical Center, Bluefield, W.Va.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, July 30, at 11 a.m. at the Bland cemetery in Bland, Va., with the Rev. Lee McIntosh officiating.

She was born Nov. 13, 1918.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Will Keith King; parents, John Ambrose and Minnie Duncan Dillow; three brothers, John Robert Dillow, Noah Dow Dillow and Douglas Leon Dillow; three sisters, Mary Belle Repass, Lutie Marie Dillow and Cynthia Munsey; and a son-in-law, John Price Newberry Sr. Survivors include five sons and daughters-in-law, Eddie and Chris King of Christiansburg, Va., Elbert "Butch" and Brenda King, Tommy and Joyce King, Phillip King and Thelma Lambert, and Grant and Barbara King, all of Bland, Va.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Eleanor Newberry, and Judy and Rick Brown, all of Bland, Va.; 12 grandchildren and their spouses, Keith King, Perry and Kathy King, Rodney and Linda King, Chad and Judy King, Shannon King, Sara and Chad Morehead, Rusty and Theresa King, Dusty and Jeff Dodson, Kevin King, Kelli and Robbie Chewning, Cindy King, and Shanna Brown; three stepgrandchildren and their spouses, John and Linda Newberry, Danny and Christian Newberry, and Joey Newberry; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Janie Pauley, Helen King, and Betty Sadler; one sister-in-law, Sachiko Dillow; and one brother-in-law, Charlie Muncy.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, July 29, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel in Bland, Va., or at the family home at any time.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Bland County Rescue Squad, the Bland County Volunteer Fire Department, or the Bastian Union Church Building Fund.

Dean Odell Miller

Dean Odell Miller, 91, of Wytheville, Va., died Friday, July 25, 2003, at Edgemont Center, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services were held Sunday, July 27, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville, Va. Interment was in the West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va. Graveside military rites were conducted by V.F.W. Post No. 2719 and American Legion Post No. 9.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and participated in five major campaigns in Europe. He was also a member of the V.F.W. Post No. 2719 and was a charter member of the West End United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Beulah Miller; wife of 62 years, Mozelle Stroupe Miller; two sisters, Essie Chapman and June Arnold; two brothers, Richard Miller and Earnest Miller; and a son-in-law, Charles Smith.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty M. Smith of Wytheville, Va.; son, Robert Dean Miller of Martinsville, Va.; three grandchildren and a spouse, Todd and Julia Smith of Roanoke, Va., Megan Miller of Harrisonburg, Va., and Blair Miller of Midlothian, Va.; two great-grandchildren, Hunter Smith and Erin Smith; a brother, David Miller; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Mabel and Lloyd Sult of Wytheville, Va., Opal Cassell of Rural Retreat, Va., and Joan Burchett of Wytheville, Va.; sisters-in-laws and brothers-in-laws, Pauline Crigger of Wytheville, Va., Vance Stroupe of Pulaski, Va., and Estelle and Muncey Jackson of Pulaski, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Edward P. "Honey Bear" Blankenship

Edward P. "Honey Bear" Blankenship, 72, of Wytheville, Va., died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, at Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Graveside service will be held Sunday, Aug. 10, at 3 p.m. at the Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery, Richlands, Va.

He was an employee of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Department of Forestry serving from Montana to Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska for 18 1/2 years. He came to the Wytheville Ranger District in 1979 retiring in 1992 after serving 36 1/2 years. He graduated from Richlands High School in 1948, Bluefield College and West Virginia University and did postgraduate work at Oregon State University. He served as a military policeman in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 9, Moose Lodge of Wytheville, Va., and Big Walker Game & Fish Club.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Eugene "Bliss" Blankenship, Charles R. "Coonie" Blankenship, Harold Ray Blankenship and Jack Brittain Blankenship Sr.

Survivors include his wife of 25 years, L. Rebecca Tarter Blankenship of Wytheville, Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly Lynn and Jimmy Farmer of Rosedale, Va.; a grandson, Jared C. Farmer; a sister, Phyllis Ruth Blankenship of Richlands, Va.; three sisters-in-law, Patsy Fay Fleming of Wytheville, Va., Mrs. Jack (Patty) Blankenship of Tazewell, Va., and Ms. Bliss (Florene) Blankenship of Richlands, Va.; two brothers-in-law, Tandy Jack Fleming of Boise, Idaho, and William R. Fleming of Roanoke, Va.; a special nephew and his spouse, Michael Keith and Marcella Blankenship; special great-nieces and great-nephews, Caroline Blankenship, Avery Blankenship, Elliott Blankenship and Simon Edward Blankenship; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; a constant companion, Bozo; and his beagles.

Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be made to the Ceres Volunteer Fire Department, Little Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Wytheville Fire Department, Wythe County Rescue Squad or the United Way of Wythe County.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Aug. 9, from 6 to 9 p.m. with a eulogy being given by Michael Keith Blankenship at 7 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel in Wytheville, Va.; and Sunday, Aug. 10, from 2 to 3 p.m. (service time) at the Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery, Richlands, Va.

Doris H. LaFrance Martel

Doris H. LaFrance Martel, 84, of Kennebunk, Maine, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, at York Hospital, York, Maine, after a brief illness.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, Aug. 11, at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Manchester, N.H. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary cemetery, Manchester, N.H.

Born Jan. 16, 1919, in Manchester, N.H., she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Alice Demers LaFrance. She lived in Manchester, N.H., most of her life, then lived in Bedford, N.H., before moving to Kennebunk, Maine, three years ago. She worked at J.F. McElwain Shoe Company in Manchester, N.H., for many years.

She was preceded in death in 1995 by her husband, Joseph W.A. Martel.

Survivors include two sons, Richard W. Martel of Wytheville, Va., and Paul A. Martel of Wells, Maine; two daughters, Constance Briggs of North Berwick, Maine, and Gloria Asselin of York Beach, Maine; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Alfred LaFrance of Manchester, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Aug. 10, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, Manchester, N.H.

Barry Lynn McAllister

Barry Lynn McAllister, 49, of Crockett, Va., died Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, at his home.

Funeral service will be held Sunday, Aug. 10, at 8 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel in Wytheville, Va. A graveside service will be held Monday, Aug. 11, at 2 p.m. at Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat, Va.

He was a well-known landscaper in the Wythe County, Va., area for many years.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Isabelle McAllister; and an infant son.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra McAllister of Crockett, Va.; his father, Lindbergh McAllister of Wytheville, Va.; a daughter, Ladecca McAllister of Christiansburg, Va.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Brian and Teri Puckett of Rural Retreat, Va., and Alex McAllister of the home; one sister and brother-in-law, Theresa and Bill Adams of Speedwell, Va.; two grandchildren, Tori Puckett and Jacob Puckett of Rural Retreat, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Aug. 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. (service time) at the Gillman Funeral Chapel.

Mary Margaret Carpenter

Mary Margaret Carpenter, 88, of Cripple Creek, Va., died Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, at the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va., after a short illness.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 11, at 2 p.m. in the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ginny Tompkins officiating. Interment will follow in the Fleming cemetery.

She was a member of Crockett's Chapel United Methodist Church, she taught school in Cripple Creek, Va., in the 40's and she and her husband operated Cripple Creek Grocery for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Loyd W. Carpenter; her parents, Stephen Lawson and Agnes Garber Porter of Cripple Creek, Va.; a daughter, Rosemary Carpenter; three brothers, Stephen "Buddy" Porter Jr., Lt. Col. Phillip Porter, and Daniel Porter; two sisters, Delores "Dolly" Meekins, and Daphne Rhudy; and a daughter-in-law, Linda C. Carpenter.

Survivors include one son, Loyd W. "Bill" Carpenter Jr. of Wytheville, Va.; one daughter and son-in-law, Daphne and Jack Crosswell of Cripple Creek, Va.; three grandchildren and their spouses, Terry W. and Teresa L. Carpenter of Huntersville, N.C., Stephen T. and Sue Carpenter of Rural Retreat, Va., and Kimberly C. and Nick Colvin of Chester, S.C.; three great-grandchildren, Janie Colvin, Drew Colvin and Kelsey Carpenter; two step-grandchildren; Dr. James Crosswell, and Chris Williams; four step-great-grandchildren, Ashley Cassell, Tabitha Kidd, Jay Sharpe Williams and Sarah Williams; one sister, Agnes Bolcer of Wytheville, Va.; one brother and sisters-in-law, Bob and Doris Porter of Cripple Creek, Va., Linda Porter of Tampa, Fla., and Lois Porter of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Fleming Church cemetery Fund, Speedwell Volunteer Fire Department or Speedwell Rescue Squad.

Marie Simmons Durham

Marie Simmons Durham, 91, of Wytheville, Va., died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 13, at 11 a.m. at the Wytheville Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Brad Simpson. Interment will be in the West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

She was a member of the Wytheville Presbyterian Church and was the owner and operator of Durham’s Restaurant.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Lee Durham Sr.; her parents, Yancey W. and Vergie Cruise Simmons; one sister Mettie Cooke; and a brother, Leon Simmons.

Survivors include a daughter, Alis Anuszewski of Prattville, Ala.; sons and daughters-in-law, O.L. Jr. and Carole Durham of Lynchburg, Va., William "Bill" and Kay Durham of Wytheville, Va., Chimer and Delores Durham of Wytheville, Va., and Paxton and Bonita Durham of Vinton, Va.; three sisters, Nell Mills of Pilot Mountain, N.C., Vernie Chandler of Lenoir, N.C., and Edith Simmons of Pilot Mountain, N.C.; 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Aug. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Grubb Funeral Home.

Herbert Carl Farlow, 68, of Radford, Va., formerly of Bland County, Va., died Sunday, June 29, 2003.

Funeral services were Thursday, July 3, at DeVilbiss Funeral Home Chapel, Radford, Va. with Pastor Jerry Gibson officiating. Interment was in Highland Memory Gardens.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Edna Farlow.

Survivors include his wife, Betty L. Farlow of Radford, Va.; one son, Hank Farlow of Midlothian, Va.; one daughter, Gloria Hoover of Blacksburg, Va.; four sisters, Linda Boksa, Audrey Gusler, both of Bland, Va., Edith Ramsey of Dublin, Va., and Delphine Farlow of Maryland; and four brothers, Jerry Farlow, Charley Farlow and Randy Farlow, all of Bland, Va., and Hensel Farlow of Manassas, Va.
