Emanuel 'Golden Greek' Zervakis, 73, dies
Jun 26, 2003
Emanuel Zervakis loved racing. And when he couldn't do that any more, he loved designing and building top-notch race cars just as much.
Known as the "Golden Greek" during his heydey on the tracks, Mr. Zervakis won two races in the Grand National (now Winston Cup) series in 1961 and finished third in the points standings that year. Later, he put together cars that Richmonder Sonny Hutchins and NASCAR regular Geoff Bodine rode to victory lane.
Mr. Zervakis died Wednesday after a lengthy illness. He was 73.
A native Richmonder, Mr. Zervakis began his racing career in jalopies at the old Mooers Field in the 1940s. He won his first race and first championship in the Hot Rod Series in 1950 at Royall Speedway (now Southside Speedway).
"He drove for me back in the'50s, and he could really drive a race car," said Junie Donlavey, a current Winston Cup car owner. "He was always a good friend. I always liked being with him. I'll really miss him."
The following year, he graduated to the Modified Series and kept winning, taking the championship in 1959 at Southside Speedway. Mr. Zervakis continued to outsmart and outrace the competition when he reached the Grand National level, winning in Norwood, Mass., and Greenville, S.C., on the big tour.
When Mr. Zervakis stopped racing in 1966, he was the promoter at Southside Speedway for 5 years, then concentrated on building cars for Hutchins and Bodine.
Mr. Zervakis is survived by three sons, Antonious "Butch" Zervakis and his wife, Tracy, Ronald and his wife, Beverly, and Michael and his wife, Elva. He is also survived by his wife, Marie Zervakis of LaCrosse, three grandsons and two granddaughters.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. tomorrow at the Bliley Funeral Homes' Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road. The funeral service will be held there on Saturday at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Dale Memorial Park.
