Elizabeth Diana Davenport Holmes

Elizabeth Diana Davenport Holmes, 97, of Wytheville, Va., died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at Asbury Center at Birdmont, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services and interment will be Friday, Nov. 15, in Berwick, Pa.

She had been a resident at Asbury Center at Birdmont since 1988. She had graduated from Bloomsburg Normal School and taught in Shickshinny Valley, Fairmont Springs and Beach Haven. She had also taught Sunday school for 35 years, played the piano and sang in the church choir at the Beach Haven United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Holmes; a son, John Edward Holmes; her parents, Samuel L. and Alma Hughs Davenport; two brothers, Bill Davenport and Jack Davenport; and a sister, Harriet Miller.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and John Wark of York, Pa., Jean and Bob Russo of Wytheville, Va., and Carol and Lee Rockwell of Kingsport, Tenn.; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and four nieces and nephews.

Gillman Funeral Chapel in Wytheville, Va., is in charge of the local arrangements.

Bruce Edward Harmon

Bruce Edward Harmon, 54, of Kennel Lane, Wytheville, Va., died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, in the Roanoke Community Hospital, Roanoke, Va.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m. at the Liberty Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Bob Lewis and the Rev. Jack Rutherford officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, Va., Aug. 11, 1948, a son of the late Robert H. and Leona Arnold Harmon. He was a self-employed painter and attended Liberty Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church.

He is survived by special companions Pat and Hoagy Oliver of the home; three sisters and brother-in-law, Mary Frye, Peggy and Clinton Coleman, and Sarah Frye, all of Wytheville, Va.; one brother and sister-in-law, Barry and Joann Harmon of Wytheville, Va.; special friends, Clayton Dunford, Tom Frye, and Timmy Akers; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Friday, Dec. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Liberty Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church, or at the residence at any time.

Mabel Hounshell Creger

Mabel Hounshell Creger, 79, of Marietta, Ga., formerly of Wythe County, Va., died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at the St. Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 29, at 11 a.m. at the Marvin United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tony Perry officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

She was a daughter of the late Dave and Florence Brown Hounshell of Rural Retreat, Va. She was a graduate of Rural Retreat High School and attended West Virginia Business College and East Tennessee State University. She was employed by the Kingsport City School System in Kingsport, Tenn., where she and her husband lived for 40 years. She was a member of the Mafair United Methodist Church in Kingsport, Tenn., and then at the First United Methodist Church of Marietta, Ga.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Edward T. Creger; a son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Barbara Creger of Newnan, Ga.; a daughter, Jo Ann Moss of Powder Springs, Ga.; two grandsons, Grant Moss and Greg Moss, both of Powder Springs, Ga.; a sister, Anna Guy of Birmingham, Ala.; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred and June Hounshell of Rural Retreat, Va., and Dal and Louise Hounshell of Franklinton, La.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Black Lick cemetery Fund at Marvin United Methodist Church, c/o Mary N. Cassell, 1040 Queen's Knob, Wytheville, VA 24382, or to the McConnell Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Mafair United Methodist Church, 1409 East Center St., Kingsport, TN 37664.

The family will receive friends Friday, Nov. 29, following the 11 a.m. service at the Marvin United Methodist Church.

Thelma Porter Groseclose

Thelma Porter Groseclose, 92, of Ivanhoe, Va., died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 28, at 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Robert E. Billingsley officiating. A memorial service will also be held Thursday, Nov. 28, at 8 p.m. conducted by Evansham Chapter No. 97 Order of the Eastern Star. A graveside service and interment will be Friday, Nov. 29, at 11 a.m. at the Bethany cemetery in the Poplar Camp section of Wythe County, Va.

She was born April 23, 1910, in Carroll County, Va., a daughter of the late Robert and Sadie Collins Porter. She was a member of Evansham Chapter No. 97 Order of the Eastern Star and was an avid cat lover.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Clayton Groseclose Sr.; a son, David P. Groseclose; a stepson, Harry C. Groseclose Jr.; and a brother, Jack Porter.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Beth and Ralph Mabe of Wytheville, Va., and Danni and Sam Lowman of Roanoke, Va.; seven grandchildren, Christine Shepherd, Charlene Martin, Melissa Irvin, Carolyn Akers, Dianne Cranford, Mark Lowman and Sammy Lowman; four great-grandchildren, Thomas Clay Irvin, Anna L. Lowman, Miles Lowman and Austin Lowman; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Nov. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. (service time) at Barnett Funeral Home or at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Ralph Mabe, at any time.

Edward Everette Aker

Edward Everette Aker, 76, of Max Meadows, Va., died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, in Edgemont Center, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va. Interment will be in West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

He was a son of the late Edward Garfield and Lila Porter Aker.

He is survived by his wife, Opal Manuel Aker of Max Meadows, Va.; two daughters, Sybil K. Aker of Wytheville, Va., and Pamela Aker Groseclose of Max Meadows, Va.; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Barbara Lawson of Leesburg, Va., Nellie Knuckols of Trinity, N.C., Alice and Clyde Gravely of Wytheville, Va., and Margaret "Tiny" Harmon of Wytheville, Va.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Sam Gordon and Sherelene Aker of Fairfax, Va., Terry Aker of Wytheville, Va., and Jules and Pam Aker of Wytheville, Va.; a half brother, Ralph Porter of Wytheville, Va.; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Dec. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel.

Randell Leon Aker

Randell "Randy" Leon Aker, 46, of Wytheville, Va., died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va. Interment will be in West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Everette Aker.

Survivors include three sons, Quinton Tyler Aker and Seth Lennon Aker, both of Wytheville, Va., and Chris Bishop of Wytheville, Va.; his mother, Opal Manuel Aker of Max Meadows, Va.; two sisters, Sybil K. Aker of Wytheville, Va., and Pamela Aker Groseclose of Max Meadows, Va.; fiancée, Diane Bishop of Wytheville, Va.; and several nieces.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Dec. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel.

William N. Bralley

William N. "Bill" Bralley, 84, of Willoughby, Ohio, formerly of Wytheville, Va., died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002.

He is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn Burke Bralley of Willoughby, Ohio; three sons, Allen Bralley, Michael Bralley and Mark Bralley, all of Willoughby, Ohio; four sisters, Louise Bralley of Abingdon, Nell Lawson of Boones Mill, Kathleen Wright and Iris B. Manuel, both of Wytheville; and four grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Davis Funeral Home in Willoughby, Ohio, was in charge of the arrangements.

Frances Akers Burress

Frances Akers Burress, 73, of Wytheville, Va., died Sunday Oct. 27, 2002, at her residence.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Glennard Quesenberry and the Rev. James Black officiating. Interment will be in the West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

She was the daughter of the late Ernest W. and Madge Poole Akers. She was a member of the Bakers Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church Sunday school class.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Junior A. Burress.

Survivors include a daughter, Lisa Burress Anderson of Wytheville, Va.; a sister, Ethel A. Chapman of Wytheville, Va.; a grandson, Steven Michael Anderson of Wytheville, Va.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Oct. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Wythe County Rescue Squad.

Raymond B. Davis

Raymond B. Davis, 59, of Tampa, Fla., formerly of Bland, Va., died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, in a Florida hospital.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 11 a.m. at Hopewell Funeral Home Chapel in Plant City, Fla. Interment was in Hopewell Memorial Gardens, Plant City, Fla. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, at 6 p.m. at the Bland Bible Church on Route 42 in the Slide area of the county, with Brother Dewayne Martin officiating.

He was born in Bland, Va., a son of the late Carl Davis and Bertie Harden. He moved to the Tampa, Fla., area in 1973. He had served time in the U.S. Army and was a carpenter.

He is survived by his wife, Miriam Davis of Tampa, Fla.; two sons, Lee Davis of Richlands, Va., and Christopher Davis of War, W.Va.; two daughters, Lynn Mayle of Plant City, Fla., and Rebecca Hewitt of Tazewell, Va.; four brothers, Glenn Davis of Cherrypoint, N.C., Teddy Davis, Johnny Davis and Carl Davis Jr., all of Bland, Va.; 13 grandchildren, one great-grandson, several nieces and nephews.

Rita Arlene Aker Midkiff

Rita Arlene Aker Midkiff, 60, of the Piney community of Wytheville, Va., died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002 in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ted Anders officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Zion cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, Va., a daughter of the late Ralph Joseph and Virginia Kinder Aker and was a lifetime member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Tommy Midkiff of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa M. and Pat Stone of Wytheville, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Pam Midkiff of Wytheville, Va.; three grandchildren, Chris Stone, Kristen Midkiff and Emily Midkiff; a brother, Ralph J. Aker Jr. of Wytheville, Va.; four sisters, Frankie Arnold of Salem, Va., Joyce Moore, Carolyn Aker and Wilma Aker, all of Wytheville, Va.; special niece, Amy Sharp of Austinville, Va.; special nephew, Blake Moore of Wytheville, Va.; and several other nieces and nephews.

Gregory R. Pollard

Gregory R. Pollard, 84, of Kingsport, Tenn., died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tenn.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 8 p.m. at the Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Pollock officiating. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 11 a.m. at East Lawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Robert Smith officiating.

Born in Middlesboro, Ky., he resided in Sperry's Ferry, Va., and moved to Kingsport, Tenn. in 1948. He attended Emory & Henry College. He was owner and operator of Copelands Office Equipment where he continued working until his illness. He was a member of Colonial Heights United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army where he served in the Pacific Theater and a member of the American Legion Hammond Post No. 3.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. William O. and Eva Price Pollard; and brothers, Bryan Pollard and Kenneth Pollard.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Miller Pollard of Kingsport, Tenn.; a son, Scott Pollard of Kingsport, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Benjamin Scott Pollard and Anna Beth Pollard; two sisters, Elisabeth Pollard of Kingsport, Tenn., and Eleanor Pollard of Kingsport, Tenn.; and a brother, Oscar Pollard of Wytheville, Va.

Memorials may be made to Wellmont Hospice, 280 Steeles Road, Bristol, TN 37620.

William E. Richardson Jr.

William E. "Rick" Richardson Jr., 49, of Abingdon, Va., died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, Va.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m. at the Farris Funeral Chapel, Abingdon, Va., with Pastor Jimmie Davidson officiating. Graveside services were at 2:30 p.m. at West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va. He was a member of Highlands Christian Fellowship and was an accountant for Glenn Phillips Survey Group and also worked for Abingdon Spatial Technologies. He was a member of the board of directors for Highlands Community Services, a lifetime member of the Abingdon Jaycees, a member of the Abingdon High School PTA Board and a member of the tech crew for the Abingdon High School Falcon Band.

He was preceded in death by his father, William E. Richardson Sr.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Huff Richardson of Abingdon, Va.; two daughters, Jillian Richardson and Suzanne Richardson, both of Abingdon, Va.; and his mother, Jackie Richardson of Abingdon, Va.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Highlands Christian Fellowship, P.O. Box 553, Abingdon, VA 24212.
