Willie Humphrey Brogan

Willie Humphrey Brogan, 94, of Wytheville, Va., died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003.

A memorial service will be Saturday, Jan. 25, at 8 p.m., at the Barnett Funeral Home conducted by Evansham Chapter No. 97, Order of the Eastern Star. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kelly Marshall officiating. Interment will follow in the Humphrey Family cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, Va. She was a member of the Evansham Chapter No. 97, Order of the Eastern Star and Sunshine Rebekah Lodge No. 20.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Brogan; her parents, Chess and Janie Wilson Humphrey; three sisters, Janie Fisher, Mary Mabry, and Margaret Dunford; five brothers, Hardin Humphrey, Raper Humphrey, Charlie Humphrey, Jesse Humphrey and Jack Humphrey.

Survivors include a special nephew and his wife, Randall and Stephanie Dunford of Rural Retreat, Va.; one sister, Belle White of Christiansburg, Va.; one brother, Woodrow Humphrey of Max Meadows, Va.; and several other nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. (service time) at the Barnett Funeral Home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Lead Mines Rescue Squad.

Elizabeth Scott Hudson Bralley

Elizabeth Scott Hudson Bralley, 85, of Max Meadows, Va., died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 25, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Scott and the Rev. Aileen Akers officiating. Interment will follow at the West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

She was born in Wythe County, Va. She was a member of Gravley Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Edward Hudson and Claude Bralley; her parents, Floyd Allen and Belle Arnold Scott; one brother, Edward Allen Scott; and one sister, Lucille Scott Richardson.

Survivors include her special caregiver, Rhonda Scott Augilera; special nephews and a spouse, the Rev. Don and Evelyn Scott, Bobby Thomas, and Stanley Scott, all of Max Meadows, Va.; and numerous other nephews and nieces.

The family will receive friends Friday, Jan. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

Eula Sumner Jefferson

Eula Sumner "Mama Eula" Jefferson, 85, of the Rakestown Community in Ivanhoe, Va., died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Jan. 25, at 11 a.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Waller officiating. Interment will follow in the Odd Fellows cemetery, Ivanhoe, Va.

She was born in Grayson County, Va., on Jan. 24, 1917, a daughter of the late Harvey ad Rebecca Mills Sumner. She was a founding member of the Ivanhoe Civic League, a former member of the board of directors of Rooftop of VA CAP Agency in Galax, Va., former Green Thumb worker with the Ivanhoe Civic League and attended the Fairview United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard H. Jefferson Sr.; and two great-grandchildren, Jo Jo Aker and Amanda Dalton.

Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Ellen and George Aker of Piney section of Wythe County, Va., Willie and Deedem Dunford of Ivanhoe, Va., Mildred and Steven Walk of Porters Crossroads section of Wythe County, Va., and Lois and Buster Hensley of Galax, Va.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dickie Jefferson of the home, Jimmy and Linda Jefferson of Shawsville, Va., and Ricky and Rhonda Jefferson of Sanders Mines Road section of Wythe County, Va.; 11 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Joy Bilbrey of Fries, Va.; one brother, John Sumner of Greensboro, N.C.; a special friend, John Selleck of Suffern, N.Y.; a special niece, Nanny Lovell of Grahams Forge section of Wythe County, Va.; and one special nephew, Robert Lazare of Massachusetts.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Reese Funeral Home.

Sue Carol Myers

Sue Carol Myers, 62, of Barren Springs, Va., died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the Kidd Family cemetery with Pastor Raymond White officiating. Burial will be in the Kidd Family cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Frank Edward Myers of Cleveland, Ohio; two daughters and son-in-law, Kathy and Larry Quesenberry of Barren Springs, Va., and Helen Marie Myers of Cleveland, Ohio; a son, Joseph Edward Myers of Max Meadows, Va.; a brother, Richard Samuel Kidd of Barren Springs, Va.; two grandsons and one great-grandson.

Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel in Hillsville, Va., is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert Olen Hall

Robert Olen Hall, 55, of Bland, Va., died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, in the Bluefield Regional Hospital, Bluefield, W.Va.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 11:30 a.m. at the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel, Bland, Va., with the Rev. Jimmy Conley and the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Interment will be in the Robinette cemetery.

He was a marketing executive with ABB and a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by two sons, Aaron Robert Hall of Seattle, Wash., and William Evan Hall of Abingdon, Va.; his parents, Olen and Beulah Hall of Bland, Va.; a grandson, Nathaniel Aaron Hall of Seattle, Wash.; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Jean Hall of Staffordsville, Va.; a special friend, Mitzie Smith of Abingdon, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Monday, Jan. 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel, Bland, Va.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorial donations to Trinity United Methodist Church.

Nannie Rosamond Williams Hedrick

Nannie "Nancy" Rosamond Williams Hedrick, 85, of Galax, Va., formerly of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at her residence after a long illness.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va. Interment will follow in the Mt. Mitchell cemetery.

She was born May 15, 1917, to the late Emmett Jackson and Maude Elizabeth Poole Williams of Wytheville, Va. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church, Galax, Va. In her early years, she was an employee of Carpenter Hosiery Mill in Wytheville, Va., and later Wytheville Knitting Mills.

She was preceded in death by one son, Gary Allen Hedrick; and a daughter, Norma Jean Giles of Roanoke, Va.

Survivors include her husband, Cloyd Neal "Tiny" Hedrick; a son, Randy Hedrick of Spartanburg, S.C.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Rita Hedrick of the home, Debbie Burris of Galax, Va., Pattie and Jeff Collins of Wytheville, Va., and Calvin Giles of Roanoke, Va.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Monday, Jan. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home or at the home in Galax, Va., at any time.

Carolyn Jean Johnson

Carolyn Jean Johnson, 54, of the Huddle Community, Wytheville, Va., died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, in the North Carolina Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 5, at 8 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel, Austinville, Va. Graveside services and interment were held Monday, Jan. 6, at 11 a.m. at the West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and former owner/operator of Nu Boutique.

She is survived by her husband, Ronald E. "Ron" Johnson; two daughters and son-in-law, Rondha J. and Brandon Kitts of Crockett, Va., and Arlie F. Johnson of Wytheville, Va.; a son, Jay Johnson of Wytheville, Va.; her parents, Howard Jr. and Frances Dodson Russ of Wytheville, Va.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Reese Funeral Home in Austinville, Va., was in charge of the arrangements.

Robert H. Mathews

Robert H. Mathews, 82, of Havre de Grace, Md., died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at Harford Memorial Hospital, Maryland.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 3, at 11 a.m. at the Mitchell-Smith Funeral Home in Havre de Grace, Md., with Pastor Robert Savage officiating. Interment was in Bel Air Memorial Gardens.

He was born June 5, 1920, in Smyth County, Va. He was retired from Edgewood Arsenal with over 30 years as a pipe fitter. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He carved decoys with R. Madison Mitchell many years ago.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion Henry Mathews and Lillie May Newman Mathews; two brothers, Leon Mathews and James Mathews; and one sister, Juanita Smith.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Virginia M. Mathews of Havre de Grace, Md.; two daughters, Wanda L. Taylor of Wilmington, Del., and Terri L. Mathews of Havre de Grace, Md.; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Marion H. Mathews Jr. and Garland Mathews, both of Wytheville, Va.; two sisters, Ann Petrov and Lorraine Shipley, both of Wytheville, Va.

Vilma Louise Blevins

Vilma Louise Blevins, 74, of Chilhowie, Va., died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Funeral Chapel in Marion, Va., with the Rev. David Neitch and the Rev. Sharon Wiley officiating. Burial will be in the Thomas cemetery, Marion, Va.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Isaac Hobert and Carrie Mae Hayes; and a granddaughter, Cassandra Blevins.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Page Gilbert Blevins of Chilhowie, Va.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Charlie Funk of Marion, Va., and Sheilah and Arthur Sawyers of Chilhowie, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Sandy Blevins of Wytheville, Va., and Anthony and Judy Blevins of Charlotte, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Amy Neitch of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Michael Funk of Marion, Va., Tina Blevins and Audra Blevins, both of Wytheville, Va., Sarah Plummer of Chilhowie, Va., Elizabeth Blevins, and Emily Blevins, both of Charlotte, NC; three great-grandchildren, Charlie Funk of Marion, Va., Olivia Neitch of Pembroke Pines, Fla., and Kayla Mabe of Marion, Va.; two brothers, O.D. Hayes and Garnett Hayes, both of Marion, Va.; and two sisters, Agnes Pennington and Doris Taylor, both of Marion, Va.

Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 246, Abingdon, VA 24212.

The family will receive friends Monday, Jan. 13, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Funeral Chapel, Marion, Va.

William Miller "Bill" Cooper

William Miller "Bill" Cooper, 85, of Wytheville, Va., died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

A Masonic memorial service will be held Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 2 p.m. in the Crockett Tabernacle with the Rev. Richard Collins officiating. Entombment will be in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Rural Retreat, Va. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

He was a member of Crockett Tabernacle where he served as deacon. He a member of the Wytheville Masonic Lodge No. 82 and a life member of the Royal Arch.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Fannie Miller Cooper.

Survivors include his wife, Helen H. Cooper of Wytheville, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Peggy Cooper of Wytheville, Va.; sister, Carrie Scott of Wytheville, Va.; brother and sister-in-law, Clark and Louise Cooper of Crockett, Va.; three grandchildren, W.M. Cooper, Stephen Cooper and Michael Cooper; four great-grandchildren, Amber Cooper, Tessa Cooper, Clark Cooper and Julianna Cooper; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Katie D. Cooper of Maryland, Julia and Roy Groseclose of Wytheville, Va., Charlotte and Gordon Johnson of Vinton, Va., Louise and Buford Wright of Pulaski, Va., and Leona Porter of Wytheville, Va.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Jan. 14, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. (memorial service time) at the Grubb Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of Southwest Virginia or to the Crockett Tabernacle.

Jessie Iona Taylor Goff

Jessie Iona Taylor Goff, 78, of Wytheville, Va., died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at her residence.

Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Don Stansell officiating. Interment was in the West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

She was manager of Central Drug Store’s soda fountain for many years and was employed by Leggett's department store. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, William E. Goff; her parents, Lawrence E. and Roberta Bailey Taylor; and a brother, Howard G. Taylor; and a sister, Caroline E. Rupe.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Diane Goff of Lynchburg, Va., and Dennis and Judy Goff of Wytheville, Va.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Diana and Dearl Kegley, and Jan and Tony Wolford, all of Wytheville, Va.; two sisters and brother-in-law, Alma T. Coppybarger of Wytheville, Va., and Madge T. and Alan Wilcox of Midland, Mich.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ed and Lillian Taylor, and Fred and Jettie Taylor, all of Wytheville, Va.; loving friend and care giver, Louise C. Walters of Wytheville, Va.; 10 grandchildren and spouses, John and Eileen Goff, Brian and Miriam Goff, Geoff and Carson Goff, Leslie Goff and Will McDow, Lance Goff, Ally Brooke Goff, Chad Kegley, Brad Kegley, Todd Wolford and Brandon Wolford; and three great-grandchildren, Alex Goff, Jillian Goff and Carson Lee "Carlee" Goff.
