Paul Raymond Hafley

Paul Raymond Hafley, 66, of Rural Retreat, Va., died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, in Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion, Va.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 16, at 2 p.m. at Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel in Marion, Va., with Chaplain Rex Carter of the Virginia State Police officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

He was born in Fairlorn, Pa., to the late Joseph Henry and Minerva Crabtree Hafley. He was a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Rensselaer, N.Y. He had worked at Brunswick, Marion Composites and General Dynamics for over 25 years.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian Catherine Hafley of Rural Retreat, Va.; 10 children, Susan Lee of Lexington, S.C., Richard Hafley of Atkins, Va., Barbara Hafley of Gaston, S.C., Michael Hafley of Rural Retreat, Va., Chipper Hafley of Seven Mile Ford, Va., Nancy Snavely of Rural Retreat, Va., Margaret Yonts of Rural Retreat, Va., David Hafley of Wytheville, Va., Bob Hafley of Atkins, Va., and Cassy Kegley of Rural Retreat, Va.; 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Jan. 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Bradley's Funeral Home.

Bobbie Lee Lazenby Kelly

Bobbie Lee Lazenby Kelly, 73, of Wytheville, Va., died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at Carolina House of Morehead City, Morehead City, N.C.

A service will be held Saturday, Jan. 18, at 2 p.m. at the home on N. 16th Street, Wytheville, Va.

She is survived by two sons, Paul D. Kelly of Dobson, N.C., and Steven C. Kelly of Morehead City, N.C.; a sister, Adele McCorkle of Charlotte, N.C.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Crystal Coast Habitat for Humanity, 1412 Bridges Street, Morehead City, NC 28557; or the Presbyterian Children's Home of the Highlands, 425 Grayson Road, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Brooks Funeral Home and Crematory Inc. of Morehead City, N.C., is in charge of the arrangements.

Dale N. Shaddle

Dale N. Shaddle, 76, of Wytheville, Va., died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, in the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C., after a brief illness.

A memorial service will be held Monday, Jan. 13, during visitation (from 6 to 8 p.m.) at the Barnett Funeral Home with Dr. Don Stansell officiating.

He was born in Sandwich, Ill., later moving to Plano, Ill., where he was a prominent farmer. During the years of 1943-1945, he served as a machinist's mate aboard the U.S.S. Intrepid. In 1973, he moved to Virginia where he became a well-know farmer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee Norton and Mildred Ruth Shaddle; and a son, William Wesley Shaddle.

Survivors include his wife, Annie C. Shaddle of the home; five daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy and Arthur Lawson of Manassas, Va., Holly Sword of Marion, Va., Katrina and Rob Wareham of Mercersburg, Pa., Freda and Harry Edwards of Austinville, Va., and Judy and Larry Alley of Pulaski, Va.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ed Shaddle of Columbus, Ohio, Frank Shaddle of Butler, N.C., and Fred and Mayra Canter of Poncé, Puerto Rico; one sister, Alice Shaddle Baum of Chicago, Ill.; 13 grandchildren, including special farming partner and friend, "Kimmy"; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Monday, Jan. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

Willie Humphrey Brogan

Willie Humphrey Brogan, 94, of Wytheville, Va., died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Kelly Marshall official. Interment was in the Humphrey Family cemetery. Evansham Chapter No. 97 Order of the Eastern Star conducted a memorial service at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25.

She was born in Wythe County, Va., the daughter of the late Chess and Janie Wilson Humphrey. She was a member of Evansham Chapter No. 97 Order of the Eastern Star and Sunshine Rebekah Lodge No. 20.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Brogan; three sisters, Janie Fisher, Mary Mabry and Margaret Dunford; and five brothers, Hardin Humphrey, Raper Humphrey, Charlie Humphrey, Chessie Humphrey and Jack Humphrey.

Survivors include a special nephew and niece, Randall and Stephanie Dunford of Rural Retreat, Va.; one sister, Belle White of Christiansburg, Va.; one brother, Woodrow Humphrey of Max Meadows, Va.; and several other nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Lead Mines Rescue Squad.

Ruby Davis Burchett

Ruby Marie Davis Burchett, 86, of Ivanhoe, Va., died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 2 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel in Austinville, Va., with the Rev. Don Scott and the Rev. Roger Collins officiating. Interment will be in the Odd Fellows cemetery in Ivanhoe, Va.

She was born in Wythe County, Va., a daughter of the late John and Laura Belle McRoberts Davis. She was a former employee of Jafree Shirt Co.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Burchett; a daughter, Katherine Bond; and a grandson, Clinton Orren.

Survivors include eight grandchildren, Brenda and Roger Collins, Debbie and Virgle McMickle, William and Nancy Jefferson, Marchia and John Blair, Jim Dunford and fiancée Mary Shinault, Amanda, Tony and Justin Blair, Seth Dunford, Josh Dunford and Michael Jefferson, all of Ivanhoe, Va.; two sisters, Dorothy Robinson of Max Meadows, Va. and Eunice Davis of Austinville, Va.; special friend, Winifred King; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Leta Neel Deacon

Leta Inez Neel Deacon, 82, of Ceres, Va., died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 1 p.m. at the Highland Bland Funeral Chapel in Bland, Va., with Rick Beam officiating. A private inurnment will take place later.

She was born in Wythe County, Va., a daughter of the late Conley and Eula Brown Neel. She was a member of the Red Oak Union Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mortimer J. Deacon; and a brother, Herman Robert Neel.

Survivors include two brothers and sister-in-law, Vernon and Doris Neel of Bland, Va., and Carroll Neel of Ceres, Va.; one sister and brother-in-law, Grace and Harold Foglesong of Rural Retreat, Va.; one sister-in-law, Edith Neel of Niceville, Fla.; three nieces; four nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Jan. 28, from noon until service time at Highland Bland Funeral Chapel in Bland, Va.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southwest Virginia or the Bland County Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Virginia Crockett Braxton

Virginia Crockett Braxton, 71, of Wytheville, Va., died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 13, at 1 p.m. at the Franklin Street United Methodist Church with the Dr. J.C. Hash, the Rev. Kenneth Sawyers, and the Rev. Reeves officiating. Interment will follow in the Oakwood cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, Va., a daughter of the late Samuel and Lena Valentine Crockett. She was retired from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Thomas L. Braxton Sr.

Survivors include four sons and daughter-in-law, Thomas L. Braxton Jr., James S. and Deborah Braxton, Joseph V. Braxton, and Claude A. Braxton, all of Wytheville, Va.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Georgia Crockett of Wytheville, Va., and Lolena and Sergio Lopez of Speedwell, Va.; one sister, Sammie Cook and Wytheville, Va.; nine grandchildren, Stephanie Suttles, Heather Grubb, Matthew Braxton, Christian Crockett, Micaiah Braxton, Christa Braxton, Jessica Braxton, Nazareth Lopez, and Esperanza Lopez; seven great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Jan. 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel.

Edith Frances Ogle Eveland

Edith Frances Ogle Eveland, 80, of Edgewood, Md., formerly of Wythe County, Va., died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003.

Funeral service will be held Monday, Jan. 13, at 2:30 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in the Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel F. Eveland; her parents, Lonnie D. and Thelma Dodson Ogle; sister, Mildred Hedrick; brothers, Robert "Bobby" Ogle and Malcolm "Mack" Ogle.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Deborah E. and Timothy Farrand of Forest Hill, Md.; son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Betty Cook of Galax, Va.; sister, Pauline Jackson of Hartsville, S.C.; brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Frances Ogle of Grahams Forge, Va.; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews and sisters-in-law.

Virginia Alene Gusler, 75, of White Gate, Va., died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Highland Ridge Rehab Center, Dublin, Va.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home, White Gate, Va., with the Rev. Brad Lewis officiating. Burial will be in the Walkers Creek cemetery, White Gate, Va.

She was born Aug. 6, 1927, at Mechanicsburg, Va.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Andrew and Gladys Hoilman Gusler; and a brother, John Derle Gusler.

Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and John Dorsa of White Gate, Va.; a sister-in-law, Shelbie W. Gusler of White Gate, Va.; two nephews, Mark Gusler and Robert Wiley; and several cousins.

Mary Frances Walters Bishop

Mary Frances Walters Bishop, 57, of Wytheville, Va., died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, in the Edgemont Center, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 16, at 2 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel, Wytheville, Va. Interment will be in the Evergreen United Methodist Church cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, George Bishop of Wytheville, Va.; three sisters, Alma Watson of Winston-Salem, N.C., Nancy Eversole and Jeannie Wright, both of Wytheville, Va.; two brothers, Sidney Walters of Winston-Salem, Va., and Morris Walters of Wytheville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Ruth Dean Ogle, 90, of Lead Mine Road, Austinville, Va., died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, in Rural Hall, N.C.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 16, at 1 p.m. at the Bethany United Methodist Church, Austinville, Va., with the Rev. Mike Waller officiating. Interment will be in the Bethany cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, Va., a daughter of the late Robert and Willie Ruth Austin Dean. She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph R. Ogle; and a brother, Edgar Dean.

Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-law, Robert "Bobby" Ogle of Rural Hall, N.C., and Wayne and Peggy Ogle of Hillsville, Va.; five grandchildren, Jeremy Ogle, Joshua Ogle, Scott Ogle, Anita Ogle and Carolyn Ann Ogle; two great-grandchildren, Meredith Ogle and Bryan Ogle; two sisters and brother-in-law, Alma and Thomas Pearman of Pulaski, Va., and Gladys Grimes of Richmond, Va.; and a sister-in-law, Hazel Dean of Austinville, Va.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Jan. 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Reese Funeral Home, Austinville, Va.

Frances Kegley Grubb, 78, of Wytheville, Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 4, at 1 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Ray Bolen and the Rev. Jerry Bell officiating. Interment will be in the Berea Christian Church cemetery, Wythe County, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Grubb; her parents, Henry Dewey and Bertie Phillippi Kegley; and a son, Michael Dale Grubb.

Survivors include six daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce "Tiny" Hawkins and Paul Lephew of Wytheville, Va., Sandra and Boone Stroupe of Wytheville, Va., Wanda and Stephen Foley of Max Meadows, Va., Patty and Jerry Cox of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Martha and Larry Copenhaver of Wytheville, Va., and Tammy Grubb of Wytheville, Va.; two sons, John R. Grubb and Ronald Grubb, both of Wytheville, Va.; two sisters, Edna Kegley of Wytheville, Va., and Ann Layne of Roanoke, Va.; a brother, Garnett Kegley of Wytheville, Va.; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Friday, Jan. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.
