Geneva E. "Geta" Shropshire, 70, of Ivanhoe, Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, in the Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax, Va.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 3, at 2 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel in Austinville, Va., with the Rev. Mike Waller officiating. Interment will be in the Fries Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.

She was born in Grayson County, Va., a daughter of the late Kermit and Ruth Anders Funk.

She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon Groves of Apex, N.C., Darlene and Tim Tilley, and Debbie and Dana Blair, all of Ivanhoe, Va.; two sisters, Lorraine Rotenberry of Fairfax, Va., and Nancy Funk of Burlington, N.C.; two brothers, Jerry Funk of Galax, Va., and Don Funk of Fries, Va.; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Jan. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home.

Esther Fletcher Prescott

Esther Fletcher Prescott, 85, of Bastian, Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at Bluefield Regional Medical Center, Bluefield, W.Va.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home, White Gate, Va., with the Rev. J.D. Clark officiating. Burial will be Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Shiloh cemetery, Hollybrook, Va.

She was born Jan. 19, 1918, in Buchannon County, Va. She was a member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church, 2nd Street, Radford, Va.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Patton and Ethel Bailey Fletcher; her husband, Edward Prescott; a sister, Elizabeth Richardson; four brothers, Oakey Fletcher, Marvin Fletcher, Raymond Fletcher and Shannon Fletcher.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Josie and Larry Havens of Bland, Va.; four sisters, Mazie Akers of Radford, Va., Rachel Brewster of Bastian, Va., Ruth Burton, and Bessie Wells of Rocky Gap, Va.; two grandchildren, Karen Havens of Bland, Va., and Russell Havens of Christiansburg, Va.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Sherwood and Lois Prescott of Radford, Va., James "Lukey" and Lois Prescott of Dublin, Va., and George Prescott of Christiansburg, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Friday, Jan. 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. (service time) at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home.

Robert Blake Hodges

Robert Blake Hodges, 12, of Cold Ridge Community, Ivanhoe, Va., died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003.

Arrangements are pending.

He was a student at Fort Chiswell Middle School.

Richard Allen Umberger

Richard Allen Umberger, 69, of Wytheville, Va., died Monday Dec. 30, 2002.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Bob Billingsley officiating. Interment will be in the Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church cemetery.

He was the son of the late Sidney A. and Neta Rakes Umberger. He was a retired truck driver.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lottie Rice Umberger.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Karen Marie and Roger McPeak of Salem, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard Dale Umberger and Patty Copenhaver of Max Meadows, Va., and Stuart Tracy and Lisa Ann Umberger of Wytheville, Va.; two brothers and sister-in-law, Leon M. Umberger, and Joe Frank and Doris Umberger, all of Wytheville, Va.; six grandchildren, Jason McPeak, Eric McPeak, Adam Umberger, Christopher Umberger, Zachary Umberger and Caleb Umberger.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Dec. 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church cemetery Fund.

Rannie M. Cox

Rannie M. Cox, 68, of Baltimore, Md., formerly of Wythe County, Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003.

Funeral and burial will be later in Baltimore, Md.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Virgie Groseclose Cox; a sister, Janet Cox; and brothers, David Cox and Virgil Cox.

Survivors include by his wife, Jan Cox of Baltimore, Md.; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara C. Marsh of Wytheville, Va., Peggy and James Gravley of Pulaski, Va., Sherry and C.A. Terry of Wytheville, Va., and Pamela Shaffer of Bramwell, W.Va.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerry Wayne and Karen Cox of Fort Myers, Fla., Danny and Stella Cox, and Terry and Rachel Cox, all of Cripple Creek, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Roger Duane Atkins

Roger Duane Atkins, 59, of Roanoke, Va., formerly of Austinville, Va., died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, in a Roanoke, Va., hospital.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, Jan. 30, at 3 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Bud Davis officiating. Inurnment will be in the West End cemetery Mausoleum, Wytheville, Va.

He was a member of the Windsor Hills United Methodist Church and received his bachelor of arts degree from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his father, Pierce J. Atkins.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Shupe Atkins; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Teresa Atkins of Charlotte, N.C.; his mother, Hazel Patterson Atkins of Roanoke, Va.; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Joann Atkins of Wheelersburg, Ohio; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Larry and Susan Shupe of Wytheville, Va.; special friends, Janice and Keith Young, and Bill and Florence Cooper, all of Roanoke, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Jan. 30, from 2 to 3 p.m. (service time) at the Barnett Funeral Home or at the home at any time.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia Society of Virginia or the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

Alfred James Hash

Alfred James Hash, 75, of Bland, Va., died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at his home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 30, at 2 p.m. at Bland Free Pentecostal Holiness Church at Bland, Va., with the Pastor Ron Hutzel officiating. Interment will be in Grandview Memory Gardens, Bluefield, Va.

He was born at Pocahontas, Va., and made his home in Bland, Va., for over 15 years. He was retired from ACL Chemical Company of Elkton, Md. He was a charter member of Bland Free Pentecostal Holiness Church of Bland, Va.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Monroe Hash and Nannie Lou Cochran Hash; three brothers and one sister.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth N. Hash; four daughters, Brenda Hash of Bland, Va., Connie Headley of Elkton, Md., Ruby Miller of Bland, Va., and Connie Baker of Crestview, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Diana Lee Rains of Penns Grove, N.J., and Ruthann Messick of Clarksboro, N.J.; stepson, William Dale Kennedy of Salem, N.J.; two sisters, Louise Worley of Annapolis, Md., and Faye Elder of Oskaloosa, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Mrs. John M. Hash Jr. of Elkton, Md.; an aunt, Grace Whitt of High Point, N.C.; four grandchildren, Jennifer White, Dennie Harper, Christine Headley and Eddie Headley; four stepgrandchildren, Jason Banks, Georgeanna Banks, Kellyanne Messick and William Dale Kennedy Jr.; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Jan. 20, from noon until 2 p.m. (service time) at the Bland Free Pentecostal Holiness Church at Bland, Va.

Rosa Lee Hall Davis, 89, of Wytheville, Va., died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 14, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. James Black, the Rev. Gary Cope and the Rev. Charles McMillen officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul Lutheran Church cemetery, Rural Retreat, Va.

She was born Oct. 11, 1913, in Wythe County, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Davis; son, Devert Donald Davis; and her parents, James Walter and Nora Mae Bland Hall.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Vana Louise and Harold Sharitz of Springfield, Ohio, Mary Margaret Rosenbaum of Max Meadows, and Billie D. Rosenbaum of Wytheville, Va., and Sibbie D. and Bill Akers of Max Meadows, Va.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Edsel C. Davis of Baltimore, Md., and Douglas R. and Ann U. Davis of Wytheville, Va.; one sister, Ovella Turner of Windsor, Va.; five grandchildren, David Matthew Davis, Billie Dean Rosenbaum, Johnnie Lee Rosenbaum, Marilyn Sharitz and Carolyn Sharitz; one foster granddaughter, Joanie Flowers; four great-grandchildren, Kaliegh Davis, Beck Davis, Madison Davis and Heather Rosenbaum; one great-stepgranddaughter, Tiffany Stanovich; two foster great-grandchildren, three sisters-in-law, many nieces, nephews and friends.

The family will receive friends Friday, Dec. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

Madie Hawkins Durkin

Madie Hawkins Durkin, 84, of Hope Mills, N.C., died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at the Carolina Health Care Center, Fayetteville, N.C.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 5, at noon at Trinity United Methodist Church in Austinville, Va., with the Rev. Mike Waller officiating. Inurnment will be in the Bethany United Methodist Church cemetery.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Hawkins Butzgy of Hope Mills, N.C.; a son, Charles B. Hawkins Jr. of Austinville, Va.; two sisters, Nellie Atkins of Tazewell, Va., and Almedia D. Teague of Bensenville, Ill.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A reception will be held Saturday, April 5, following the noon memorial service at Trinity United Methodist Church.

Ethel Dixon Patterson

Ethel Dixon Patterson, 92, of the Pulaski Retirement Community, Pulaski, Va., died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, in the Pulaski Community Hospital, Pulaski, Va.

Funeral service will be held Thursday, April 3, at 3 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Pulaski, Va., with Dr. Randy Frye and the Rev. Richard J. Patterson officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery, Pulaski, Va.

She was born Feb. 25, 1911, in Wytheville, Va. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Pulaski, Va., where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Loyal Worker Sunday School Class.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Lloyd Patterson; and her parents, Rush Jackson Dixon and Minnie Kincer Dixon.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Chuck Shomo of Pulaski, Va.; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Dr. James L. Jr. and Sue Patterson of Colonial Heights, Va., the Rev. Richard J. and Martha Patterson of Morristown, Tenn., and Ronald E. Patterson of Arlington, Va.; seven grandchildren, James L. Patterson III, Johnny Patterson, Tom Patterson, Jennifer Crittenden, Rick Patterson, Chuck Shomo Jr. and Christopher Shomo; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Jo Patterson of Wytheville, Va.; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, April 3, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. (service time) at the First United Methodist Church, Pulaski, Va. The family will be meeting at the home of the daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Chuck Shomo, Oakland Drive, Pulaski, Va.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church, 135 4th Street NW., Pulaski, VA 24301.

Roy William Arthur

Judge Roy William Arthur, 85, of Wytheville, Va., died Friday, April 4, 2003 in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

A memorial service will be held Monday, April 7, at 2 p.m. at the St. Paul United Methodist Church in Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Dr. Donald E. Stansell, pastor of the church, officiating.

He was born in Louisa County, Va., but lived most of his life in Wytheville, Va. He practiced law in Wytheville, Va., for a number of years and was a Circuit Court Judge for 15 years prior to his retirement on Jan. 1, 1985. He was a graduate of the College of William and Mary and its Marshall-Wythe School of Law. He was a member of the college's Board of Visitors for a number of years and a recipient of the William and Mary Alumni Medallion. He was a member of the Virginia Higher Education Study Commission, which recommended the merger of the Medical College of Virginia and Richmond Professional Institute into Virginia Commonwealth University. The commission also recommended the creation of the Virginia System of Community Colleges. Judge Arthur was a member of a number of civic organizations and of St. Paul United Methodist Church. He was a past Mayor of Wytheville, Va. having served from 1946 to 1952.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Watson Arthur and Verna Pelter Arthur; and two sisters, Audrey A. Price and Lucille A. Jones.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Ellett Arthur; a niece, Martha Price Nance; and a nephew, William H. Price.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice. The family requests that no food be taken to the home.

Bertie Mae Umbarger Leedy

Bertie Mae Umbarger Leedy, 101, of Rural Retreat, Va., died Friday, April 4, 2003, in Asbury Place, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 6, at 2 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Will Shewey officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, Va., and was a member of the Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Nora Payne Umbarger; and a son, William Harry "Bill" Leedy.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, James and Margaret Leedy of Rural Retreat, Va.; two grandsons and their spouses, Jeff and Evelyn Leedy, and Eugene and Vickie Leedy, all of Rural Retreat, Va.; four great-grandchildren, Samantha Leedy, Tanya Leedy, Jeffrey Leedy Jr. and Zachary Leedy; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Sunday, April 6, from 1 to 2 p.m. (service time) at the Lindsey Funeral Home or at the residence of her son, Jim Leedy, at any time.

The family suggests that those who prefer, may make memorials to the Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church or to the Rural Retreat Volunteer Fire Department.
