Stephen O'Neal

Stephen O'Neal, 49, of Denver, Colo., died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m. at the Marion Baptist Church in Marion, Va. Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 13, in Denver, Colo.

He was a graduate of Marion Senior High School, Virginia Tech with a bachelor of science degree and a master’s degree in chemistry and the University of South Carolina Pharmacy School.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruby Parker O'Neal.

Survivors include his wife, Patti O'Neal of Denver, Colo.; one daughter, Mallorie O'Neal of Denver, Colo.; his father and stepmother, A.V. and Barbara O'Neal of Marion, Va.; and one sister and brother-in-law, Kathy and Andrew Pressing of Wytheville, Va.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Copper Crest Riding Therapy Program.

Seaver-Brown Funeral Service in Marion, Va., is in charge of local arrangements.

Larry Edward Groseclose

Larry Edward Groseclose, 59, of Wytheville, Va., died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 13, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with Vicar Harvey Atkinson and Pastor Joe Shumate officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery.

He retired as a colonel from the Wytheville Police Department with 25 years service and was a member of the Wytheville Fire Department for 20 years. He was a member of the Lebanon Lutheran Church where he had served in various offices and was treasurer of the cemetery Fund.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Martin Groseclose of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Alana Groseclose Hancock of Wytheville, Va., her fiancé, Todd Garwood of Pulaski, Va., and Tracie Groseclose and Donnie Gamble Jr. of Wytheville, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, William Paul and Patricia Groseclose of Wytheville, Va.; grandchildren, Jeremy Groseclose, Lauren Hancock, Britta Groseclose, Rachael Groseclose, Halle Gamble, Julie Groseclose, and Hunter Gamble; his mother, Margaret Groseclose Hall of Cheverly, Md.; his mother-in-law, Adah Umberger of Wytheville, Va.; a sister, Vicky Groseclose Petty of Wytheville, Va.; a brother and sister-in-law, Roy Len and Laura Hall of Cheverly, Md.; special sister-in-law, Patricia Martin of Wytheville, Va.; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Melissa and Frank Cole; several niece, nephews, aunts, uncles and other friends and relatives.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Sept. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Barnett Funeral Home or at the residence at any time.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorial donations to the American Cancer Society, Memorials c/o Jean Lester, P.O. Box 778, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Earnest Bane Davis Jr.

Earnest Bane Davis Jr., 32, of Washington, D.C., formerly of Pulaski, Va., died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Sept. 16, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. James Black officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.

He was a graduate of the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Va., and was employed at the Mt. Vernon Hospital in Chesterfield, Va., as a physical therapist.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Dave and Mary Davis.

Survivors include his father and step-mother, Earnest Bane Sr. and Donna Davis of Clearwater, Fla.; mother, Cheyerl Davis Carbajal of East Bend, N.C.; two sisters, Susan Diane Davis of Dublin, Va., and Debra Lynn Farmer of Pulaski, Va.; a maternal grandfather, Chaffin C. Patterson of Dublin, Va.; maternal grandmother, Peggy Ellen Riggins of Wytheville, Va.; aunts and uncles, Nancy Viars of Dublin, Va., Thelma McDaniel of Pulaski, Va., Douglas Davis of Ivanhoe, Va., and George Marshall Davis of Ivanhoe, Va.; special extended family, Roger and Brenda Dawson, Scott and Leslie Dawson, and Tim and Sarah Dawson, all of Pulaski, Va.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Sept. 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home.

Janet Evans Harner

Janet Evans Harner, 66, of Bland, Va., died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at Pulaski Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 14, at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home in White Gate, Va., with the Rev. Carl Holland officiating. Burial will be in the Mechanicsburg cemetery, Mechanicsburg, Va.

She was born April 10, 1936, at Princeton, W.Va. She was a member of the Bland Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Clay and Gladys Williams Evans; one brother, Charles B. Evans; two sisters, Peggy E. Thomas and Betty E. Thornton.

Survivors include her husband, Harold "Hap" Harner; two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Kathy Harner of Bland, Va., and Tim and Flora Harner of Rocky Gap, Va.; four grandchildren, Kari Beth Harner, Samantha Harner, Jessica Harner, and Evan Harner.

The family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home.

Donald H. Henderson

Donald H. Henderson, 53, of Davenport, Iowa, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island, Ill.

Memorial services will be held Monday, Sept. 16, at 10 a.m. at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, Iowa.

He was born Dec. 8, 1948, to Orville W. and Esther Rasmussen Henderson in Omaha, Neb. He graduated from high school in Saltville, Va. and later from Virginia Tech (VPI). He served in the Army National Guard from 1971 until 1977. He worked as a computer programmer and consultant.

He is survived by his daughter, Sarah Henderson of Davenport, Iowa; a sister, Cheryl Henderson of Atkins, Va.; brother, Robert Henderson of Santa Clara, Calif., and James Henderson of Kaunakakai, Molokai, Hawaii; his parents, O.W. "Swede" and Esther Henderson of Wytheville, Va.; a niece, Carmen McCartney of Kaunakakai, Molokai, Hawaii; and special friends, Jim Hennessey and his family of Coal Valley, Ill.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Sept. 15, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Weerts Funeral Home in Davenport, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to an education fund for his daughter, Sarah.

Dorothy May Hoosier Beamer

Dorothy May Hoosier Beamer, 92, of Bastian, Va., died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at Bluefield Regional Medical Center, Bluefield, W.Va.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 30, at 11 a.m. at the Laurel Fork Baptist Church, Rocky Gap, Va., with the Rev. Allen Mahan officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill cemetery, Bastian, Va.

She was born March 20, 1910, at Konnarock, Va., She was a member of the Laurel Fork Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alexander and Emaline Pennington Huffman; her husbands, Arthur W. Hoosier and Benjamin V. Beamer; a son, James Hoosier; and daughters, Lucille Hoosier and Rena May Hoosier.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Marshall and Janet Hoosier of Salem, Va., Johnny and Colleen Hoosier of Salem, Va., Gerald and Nancy Hoosier of Bastian, Va., and Judy Hoosier of Rocky Gap, Va.; one stepdaughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Edwin Hall of Richmond, Va.; four stepsons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Stella Beamer of Alexandria, Va., Carl and Louise Beamer of Roanoke, Va., Ralph and Ingrid Beamer of Bristol, Tenn., and Edwin Beamer of Pulaski, Va.; 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Friday, Aug. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Laurel Fork Baptist Church, Rocky Gap, Va.

Helen Rosetta Ratcliffe Coffey

Helen Rosetta Ratcliffe Coffey, 78, of Wytheville, Va., died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral service will be held Friday, Oct.11, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Donald Drake. Interment will be in the West End cemetery.

She was the daughter of the late James and Belle Pauley Ratcliffe. She was an active member of Fellowship Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Alco Controls.

She was preceded in death by one brother, J.D. Ratcliffe; and three sisters, Essie Coffey, Georgia Worrell and Betty Jo Dunford.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Donald Leon and Sue Coffey of Wytheville, Va.; sister, Louise Doss of Richmond, Va.; brother, Robert Ratcliffe of Pulaski, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Oct. 10, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

Anna Christine Mabry Nester

Anna Christine Mabry Nester, 75, of Doe Run Road, Max Meadows, Va., died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, in Asbury Center at Birdmont, Wytheville, Va.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, Sept. 5, at 6 p.m. at the Galena Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Vaughn Earl Hartsell officiating.

She was born in Austinville, Va., and was a member of Galena Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Shirley Arlis Nester; her parents, Louis Burton Mabry and Fannie Jackson Colgate Mabry; a son, Alan H. Nester; a sister, Mary Sowers; and a brother, Dick Mabry.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Terry Lee and Jane Testerman Nester of Max Meadows, Va.; stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law, Larry Steven and Linda Peglow Nester of Hampton, Va., and Kyle Walton and Barbara Fariss Nester of Max Meadows, Va.; a brother, Charles W. "Hyde" Mabry of Norfolk, Va.; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her son Terry Nester at any time. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

James Harlan Coleman

James Harlan Coleman, 82, of Max Meadows, Va., died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, in the New River Valley Medical Center, Radford, Va.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 3, at 8 p.m. at the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. H.T. Atkinson and the Rev. James Dunn officiating. Interment will be private.

He was born in Coalwood, W.Va.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard Heath and Dorma Julita Puckett Coleman; two brothers, Glenn Coleman and Paul Coleman; and a sister, Inez Lanter.

Survivors include his wife, Sally Coleman of the home; two daughters and son-in-law, Penny Coleman and Roy A. Viars of Welcome, Md., and Dee Coleman Griffin of Norfolk, Va.; one grandchild, Derek P. Viars of Maryland; three sisters, Fairy Belle Stanley of Salem, Va., Jean Carty of Roanoke, Va., and Aline Crockett of Salem, Va.; and a brother, Bernard H. "Bernie" Coleman Jr. of Christiansburg, Va.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Oct. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. (service time) at the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Nina Neese Blessing Farmer

Nina Mae Neese Blessing Farmer, 88, of Galax, Va., formerly of Rural Retreat, Va., died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, in the Waddell Nursing Home, Galax, Va.

Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 27, at 11 a.m. at the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home Chapel in Galax, Va., with the Rev. Fred Jennings and the Rev. Ben Haga officiating. Interment was in Monta Vista cemetery.

She was born May 29, 1914, in Wythe County, Va., a daughter of the late William E. and Dovie Alice Groseclose Neese.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, James Arthur Blessing and George M. Farmer; three brothers, the Rev. Dean M. Neese, Fred Neese and Frank Neese; and a sister, Mamie N. Vaught.

Survivors include two sisters, Katherine Groseclose of Rural Retreat, Va., and Anna Spraker of Wytheville, Va.; sisters-in-law, Lottie Neese of Wytheville, Va., Wilma Farmer of Galax, Va., Bertie Houtz and Ethel Farmer, both of Salem, Va., and Nell Richardson of Galax, Va.; a brother-in-law, Carlie Farmer of Fries, Va.; two stepdaughters and stepson-in-law, Lowana and Marvin Wullschleger, and Betty Farmer; stepgrandchildren and spouses, Sheree and Clifton Shupe, Kay and Jerry Bolt, and Jimmy and Susan Shreve; great-stepgrandchildren and spouses, Valerie and Terry Whitter, Dione and Brian Ramey, Jordan Bolt, Candice Bolt, Cody Shreve, and Jeffrey Shreve; great-great-stepgrandchildren, Ty Whitter, Weston Whitter, and Maci Ramey; and several nieces and nephews.

Frederic H. Morehead

Frederic H. "Freddie" Morehead, 73, of Wytheville, Va., died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, in the Grayson Rehab Center, Independence, Va.

A memorial service will be Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 8 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Wytheville, Va., with Pastor Steve Ridenhour officiating.

He was the son of the late Robert C. Sr. and Julia Owens Morehead. He attended Roanoke College and was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, former member of the Wytheville Fire Department and a former employee of The Southwest Virginia Enterprise.

He is survived by one sister, Phyllis M. Umberger of Cripple Creek, Va.; a brother, Robert C. Morehead Jr. of St. George, Utah; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Oct. 2, from 7 to 8 p.m. (service time) at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Wytheville Fire Dept.
