Frankie Armbrister Betzala, 81, of Richmond, died Monday, Aug. 30, 1999.

Graveside service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 1, at 12:30 p.m. in the National Memorial Park, Falls Church.

She was born in Wytheville and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her children, Joseph W. Betzala and Linda S. Groulx; two brothers, Norman Armbrister and Friel Armbrister; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad, Richmond, Va.

Bliley Funeral Home, Staples Mill Chapel in Richmond, is in charge of the arrangements.

Ryland Bertran Brown

Ryland Bertran "Buddy" Brown, 61, of Wytheville, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 1999, in the Bristol Regional Hospital in Bristol, Tenn.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, Aug. 31, at 8:30 p.m. in the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Stansell officiating.

He served in the U.S. Air Force.

He was preceded in death by his father, Amos E. Brown; a daughter, Ylandra Jean Brown; and a sister, Barbara Brown Davis.

Survivors include his wife, Dianna H. Brown; two daughters and one son-in-law, Angela and Dell Willis of Rural Retreat, and Deanna Jean Brown of Wytheville; one son, Ryan Lynn Brown of Wytheville; his mother, Viola Grimes Brown of Wytheville; two brothers, Kenneth Brown and Garland Brown, both of Wytheville; one sister-in-law and her husband, Deloris and Richard Gilbert of Salt Lake City, Utah; four brothers-in-law, Darrell Hendricks, Robert and Ann Hendricks, George Hendricks, and Ray Hendricks, all of Salt Lake City, Utah; and two nephews, Mark Davis and Amos Davis.

Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.

Maynard Gerald Green

Maynard Gerald Green, 60, of Bastian, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 31, at 2 p.m. at Bastian Union Church with the Rev. Greg Dill and the Rev. Lee McIntosh officiating. Interment followed in the Kenner Kitts cemetery in Bastian.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in the Vietnam War and was a member of V.F.W. Post 7969.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Okey and Gertrude Green; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Kenner and Erma Kitts; and his brother, Charlie Green.

Survivors include his wife for 38 years, Ollie Mae Green; two daughters and sons-in-law, Tina and Ted Metayer of Ludlow, Mass., and Teresa and Mike Collier of Remington; a son, Michael Green of Bastian; three grandchildren, Caitlin Green, Teddy Metayer and Alan Collier; his stepmother, Mary Green of Bluefield, W.Va.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Connie and Ben Hayes of Belair, Md., Rose Marie and Billy Rose of Bluefield, and Evelyn and Don Terry of Alabama; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bobby and Lisa Green of Warren, Ohio, and Calvin and Crickett Green of Bluefield; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Carol and Lowell Floyd of Ceres; and many other relatives and friends.

Helen Richardson Hunley

Helen Richardson Hunley, 83, of Wytheville died Friday, Aug. 27, 1999, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 30, at 2 p.m. at the West End United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dennis Milligan and the Rev. Ann Blair officiating. Interment was in the West End cemetery.

She was a daughter of the late John W. and Blanche Smith Richardson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James F. Hunley; a grandson, Craig Mabe; one sister; and four brothers.

Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Lee and Franklin Mabe of Max Meadows, and Linda H. Perry of Johnson City, Tenn.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Clenda Hunley of Wytheville, and Robert "Bob" and Josie Hunley of Groseclose; two sisters, Louise Price of Wytheville, and June Goodwin of Salem; five grandchildren and their spouses, Michael and Kim Mabe of Max Meadows, Jamie and Lisa Mabe of Crockett, Lorrie and Jeff Malcolm of Johnson City, Tenn., Wendy and Lee Williams of Memphis, Tenn., and Heather Hunley and her fiancé, Nick Kapranos; two great-grandchildren, Hanna Mabe and Jackson Malcolm; and two sisters-in-law, Margaret Richardson of Wytheville and Doris Richardson of Salem.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the West End United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1030 W. North St., Wytheville, VA 24382.

David Lee Kelly

David Lee Kelly, 47, of North Augusta, S.C., died Friday, Aug. 27, 1999, in North Augusta, S.C.

Graveside services will be held Friday, Sept. 3, at 2 p.m. at the Kelly Family cemetery in Delvinta, Ky., with the Rev. Garnett Thomason and the Rev. Clarence Thomason officiating.

He was formerly of Lee County, Ky., the Delvinta community, and had lived a short time in Wythe County. He was a son of the late Avery and Beulah McGuire Kelly.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, David Keith and Dreama Kelly of Max Meadows; a sister and brother-in-law, Patsy Ann and Lynn Becker of Byron, Mich.; a brother and sister-in-law, Elwood and Betty Kelly of Kingsland, Ga.; an uncle, Luther McGuire of Beattyville, Ky.; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and special friends, Joe Sports, Ann Sports, Roman Sports, Bill Johnson, and Arland Finley, all of North Augusta, S.C.

William Theron Newberry

William Theron "Woody" Newberry, 37, of the Mechanicsburg community in Bland, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, at Giles Memorial Hospital, Pearisburg.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Aug. 29, at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with the Rev. Earnest Chinault, the Rev. Wayne Monroe, and the Rev. Frank Clifton officiating. Burial was in the Mechanicsburg cemetery, Mechanicsburg.

He was born April 27, 1962, at Bristol, Tenn., a son of William P. "Bill" Newberry of Roanoke and Elizabeth "Betsy" Newberry of Mechanicsburg. He was a superintendent with Harris General and Mechanical Contractors.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Anthony Newberry of Bland; a daughter, Lindsey Newberry of Bland; a sister, Dawn Newberry of Charleston, S.C.; maternal grandmother, Mary Guthrie of Ripplemead; a nephew, Matthew Horne of Charleston, S.C.; his fiancée, Kym Bray of Pembroke; his fiancée's children, Adrianna and Tyler; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Byrnes Chapel United Methodist Church.

Clara Vada Richardson

Clara Vada Richardson, 87, of Barren Springs, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, in the Birdmont Health Care Center in Wytheville.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Aug. 29, at 2 p.m. at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Stuart and Dr. James H. DeBoe officiating. Burial followed in the Little Vine cemetery.

She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Barnes and Margaret Brewer, both of Barren Springs; one son and daughter-in-law, Donnie and Marshah Richardson of Dry Fork; one brother, Rush Horton of Galax; one sister, Alma Martin of Wytheville; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel in Hillsville was in charge of the arrangements.

Claude Davis Shewey

Claude Davis Shewey, 88, of Bland, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 2, at 2 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel in Bland with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Interment will follow in the Temple Hill cemetery.

He was born in Bland County, a son of the late Charles A. and Rose Lindamood Shewey.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Dillow Shewey; two sisters, Lucy Wilson and Ada Davis; and a brother, Robert Shewey.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Polly and Hassel Smith of Bland; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Pam and Gary Collins of Bland, Jerry and Deanna Smith of Wytheville, Connie and Ray Puckett, Kim and John Goins, Sue and Terry Umbarger, Patty and Rich Hankins, all of Bland, Patrick Smith of Bland, and his friend, Sandra Phillippi of Wytheville; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Sept. 1, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Bland County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 75, Bastian, VA 24314.

Phyllis Smith Simmerman

Phyllis Smith Simmerman, 69, of Wytheville, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 1, at 2 p.m. at the Berea Christian Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. Simmerman.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Dana and Jamie Smith of Wytheville; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Charles Michael and Yvonne Simmerman, and Curtis Deane Simmerman, all of Wytheville; three sisters, Mary Hilton and Colleen Dunford, both of Wytheville, and Naomi Perigon of Statesville, N.C.; two granddaughters; one grandson; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

A. Eunice Smethurst

A. Eunice Smethurst, 87, of Bryan, Ohio, formerly of Montpelier, Ohio, died Friday, Aug. 27, 1999, at Community Hospital of Williams County, Bryan, Ohio.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 30, at 11 a.m. at the Wilson-Geesey Funeral Home with the Rev. Sudaulak Layraman officiating. Burial was in Riverside cemetery, Monpelier, Ohio.

Born July 24, 1912, at Pioneer, Ohio, she was the daughter of Gay (Carlyle) and Harry Billow and was a lifelong Williams County, Ohio, resident. A homemaker, she had been associated with the West Bethesda Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Kenneth C. Govin, in 1937; her second husband, Cleo R. Smethurst, in 1978; two brothers, Rollin Billow and Dean Billow; and one sister, Eva Gibney.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Allen and Lois Govin of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Larry and Sue Govin of Max Meadows; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the West Bethesda Presbyterian Church near Montpelier, Ohio.

Peggy Louise Camper

Peggy Louise Camper, 66, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 8, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with Chaplain Marilyn Saarinen officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.

She was born in Glade Spring.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Adrian Camper; a daughter, Deborah Darlene Camper; her father, Paige Osborne; and a brother, Bobby Norris.

Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Janet and Bobby Kennedy of Max Meadows, Ada "Pep" Camper and her fiancé, Curtis Worrell of Blacksburg; seven sons and daughters-in-law, William Hubert and Deborah Norris of Statesville, N.C., Darrell and Karen Camper of Rural Retreat, Michael D. Camper, Mark and Judy Camper, Jeff and Mary Ann Camper, David D. Camper, and Charlie and Lorie Camper, all of Wytheville; her mother, Helen Osborne of Chilhowie; four sisters, Janet "Peanut" Marion of Orlando, Fla., Mildred Vannoy and Mary Socarras, both of Chilhowie, and Linda Owens of Meadoview; four brothers, Ben Osborne, John Osborne, Avery Osborne and Stuart Osborne, all of Chilhowie; 11 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, two stepgrandchildren, one stepgreat-grandchild and many special friends.

Lula Marie Barnette Hall

Lula Marie Barnette Hall, 73, of Bastian, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 9, at 2 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel in Bland with the Rev. Samuel Shupe officiating. Interment will follow in the Bland cemetery.

She was born in Gratton, a daughter of the late Oliver and Ollie Pritt Barnette.

She was preceded in death by her husband, B.F. "Joe" Hall; two sisters, Effie Bennett and Laura Bryant; and five brothers, Alonzo Barnette, Leonard Barnette, Clinton Barnette, Clarence Barnette and Jack Barnette.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Monica Hall of Bastian; a sister, Reba Gross of Bastian; a granddaughter, Beverly Milanese of Fort Riley, Kan.; and several nieces and nephews.

Malcolm Robinson Lawson

Malcolm Robinson Lawson, 92, of Ivanhoe, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at his home.

Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 8, at 2 p.m. at the Forest United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jean Layell and Jack King officiating. Interment followed in the Lawson Family cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Malcolm and Lizzie Jackson Lawson. He was a lifelong Wythe County farmer.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Thelma Shipwash; and his brother, Virgil Lawson.

Survivors include four nieces Addie Wier, Mary Goodman and Ruth Andrews, all of Pulaski, and Alice Taylor of Fries; three nephews, Foster Lawson of Ivanhoe, Malcolm Lawson of Richmond, and Marion "Popeye" Lawson of Max Meadows; one special great-nephew, Philip Bevil of Pulaski; and a host of other great-nieces and great-nephews.
