Gladys Bott Burge

Mrs. Gladys Bott Burge, age 88, died at University Hospital in North Lauderdale, FL, January 13, 2008.

She was a resident of North Lauderdale, FL for the past 39 years. She is the daughter of the late Luther and Sally Bott of Abingdon, VA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Burge, her son, Carl Harshbarger, Jr., four brothers, Floyd, Orville, Junior and Alfred Bott, and two sisters, Minnie Bott Sperry and Geneva Bott Miller.

Gladys was an active member and supporter of Faith Baptist Church in Margate, FL.

She is survived by four sisters, Ada Goodson, Fort Wayne, Indiana, Lucille Blair and Hazel Wright both of Abingdon, Virginia, and Trula Harless of Bristol, Tennessee. She is also survived by two brother-in-laws, Herman Miller of Bristol, Virginia and Clarence Harless of Bristol, Tennessee and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P. M. Friday, January 18, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. A cryptside funeral service will be conducted at 2 P. M. Saturday, January 19, 2008 in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Howard Leonard officiating.

In Lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to Faith Baptist Church, mail to: Susan James, Bookkeeper, 6950 Royal Palm Blvd., Margate, FL 33063.

Dolly Berniece Ledford

MRS. DOLLY BERNIECE LEDFORD, 88, died Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She lived most of her life in Abingdon and was of the Primitive Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her parents Rean and Erie Singleton and a brother Robert “Bob” Singleton. She spent 55 years working the retail sales industry and was well-known for her biscuits and her philosophy and advice on life to those she knew.

She is survived by her five daughters; Shirley Davidson and husband P. D. of Bristol, Virginia, Kate Kegley and husband Jim of Bristol, Virginia, Mildred Smith of Abingdon, Glen Susan Ledford of Tampa, Florida, and Nancy King and husband Andy of Indian Trail, North Carolina; her brothers and sisters; Thelma Willis of Bland, Virginia, Bill Singleton of Abingdon, Fred Singleton of Saltville, Nell Williams of Bristol, Virginia, Betty Burchette of Nashville, Tennessee, special sister Vergie Singleton of Abingdon, and special brother Bobby Gerald Singleton of Colorado; 13 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren also survive.

The family wishes to extend a heartfelt special thank you to all of Mrs. Ledford’s caregivers for the wonderful care they extended to her.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, January 18, 2008 at 12:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Service, Forest Hills Chapel (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens) with Brother Danny Smith and Brother Darrell Davis officiating. The family will receive friends immediately prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Colonel Steve Kiser, Lee McVey, Cameron Blok-Anderson, Eric Bohlen, Matthew Bohlen, and Adam Bohlen.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital Memorial Program, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tn. 38105.

Thelma M. Hayter

Mrs. Thelma M. "Tam" Hayter, age 86, passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at her home.

Mrs. Hayter was born in Washington County, Virginia on February 7, 1921 to the late Ernest Hayter and the late Vergie Frances Hayter. She attended Meadowview High School and was a member of Abingdon Baptist Church. Mrs. Hayter enjoyed crocheting.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Blair Hayter.

Mrs. Hayter is survived by one son, Tommy Hayter and wife, Betty of Abingdon. One brother; Robert Hayter of Abingdon and one sister; Lillian Price and husband, Bob of Salem, Virginia; two grandchildren; Jennifer H. Neely and husband, Donald of Meadowview, Va and J. Wesley Hayter and wife, Jackie of Abingdon. Two great-grandchildren; Abigail Hayter and Olivia Hayter both, of Abingdon. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, January 18, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Dr. Steven Pollard officiating. Burial will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be J. Wesley Hayter, Donald Neely, Barry Shelley, Mark Yeatts, Ronald Yeatts and John Yeatts. The family will receive friends on Friday, January 18, 2008 from Noon until time for service in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.

The family would like to thank Naomi Barrett and the staff of Hospice of Southwest Virginia, Mrs. Hayters personal sitters; Goldie, Margaret, Barbara, Angie, Zetta, Linda, Brenda, and the Senior Citizens Meals on Wheels.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Abingdon Baptist Church, 361 West Main Street, Abingdon, VA 24210.

Dorothy Ayers Hurley

Dorothy Ayers Hurley, age 95, passed away Thursday, January 17, 2008, at the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie, VA. Mrs. Hurley was born in Richford, NY, on June 7, 1912. She was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Ayers. She was married to Earl Hurley on May 31, 1949 and lived in the Washington, DC area for 31 years before moving to Glade Spring in 1980.

Mrs. Hurley was preceded in death by her husband, who passed away in 1996. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. Also, her extended family includes her church family of Glade Spring Baptist Church.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Baker and his staff and to Dr. Pile and Dr. Parker at Valley Health Care Center. Also, special thanks to the staff, nurses and aids at Valley Health Care Center and to Lisa Crigger and all of the staff of Hospice of Southwest Virginia.

Graveside services for Mrs. Dorothy Hurley will be held at the Old Glade Presbyterian Church cemetery in Glade Spring at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 20, 2008. Services will be conducted by Rev. Steve Byrd. Pallbearers will be Pat McThenia, Dewey McThenia, Tommy DeBusk, Travis DeBusk, George Davis and Bobby Hurley. Those attending the service are invited to meet at the graveside by 1:55 p.m. on Sunday.

There will be no formal visitation at the funeral home. However, friends are welcome to stop by the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service to sign the guest register. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southwest Virginia, 301 E. Valley Street, Abingdon, VA 24210.

Roy Clemons Crusenberry

Mr. Roy Clemons Crusenberry, age 80, passed away Thursday, January 17, 2008, at his home. He was born in Saltville, Virginia, son of the late Rob Crusenberry and Rosa Mae Haynes Crusenberry. He lived most of his life in Washington County and had worked as a carpenter, retiring from Johnson Brothers Construction. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in World War II. Mr. Crusenberry was a member of Palestine Baptist Church, where he served as Sunday School teacher and Deacon. He was an avid deep sea fisherman and hunter.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, E. Marie Crusenberry, and his brothers, Herman Crusenberry and Harold Crusenberry.

Mr. Crusenberry is survived by three sons: Danny Crusenberry and wife Rhonda of Hansonville, VA; Randy Crusenberry and wife Arlene of Abingdon; and James Crusenberry and wife Connie of Abingdon; one daughter, Doris Cullop and husband Kyle of Meadowview; three sisters: Martha Maiden, Nannie Burke and Betty Scott, all of Abingdon; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and special friends: Bea and Joe Andes, Nub Bowers, Luke Johnson, Tom and Ella Mae McFadden.

The funeral service for Mr. Roy Crusenberry will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, January 20, 2008, at Palestine Baptist Church with Rev. Stephen Richardson officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Douglas Cullop, Kyle Cullop, Jr., Chris Cullop, Morgan Crusenberry, Sarah Crusenberry, Hannah Crusenberry, Joey Burke, and Brian Barrett. Honorary pallbearers will be Cody Crusenberry and the men of Palestine Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 19, 2008, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.

The family offers special thanks to Hospice of Southwest Virginia for the loving care provided by them.

Michael Wade Evans

Michael Wade Evans, 38, died Thursday January 17, 2008.

He is survived by his wife, Terri Ann Evans; his son, Joshua Eugene Claude Evans; his mother, Angie Bowman; his step-father, Tim Herndon; his sister Sindy Brabson; his step-son, Michael Ryan Reynolds; his nephew, Shawn Evans; and two nieces, Timeara and Shasha Brannon.

A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. in the Rust Hollow cemetery with Pastor Scott Greaser officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.

Elbert Clifford King

Mr. Elbert Clifford King, age 86, died Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at his home.

Born on January 12, 1922 in Wallen, West Virginia, he was a son of the late John King and Mattie Dorsey King. He was also preceded in death by his infant daughter Janice King (age six months) and his first born son, Raymond C. King who was killed in a mining accident before his 21st birthday, his sister Retha Bevins and his brother Ralph King.

Mr. King retired from Jewell Smokeless Coal Company in 1986 and was a member of the Rowe Pentecostal Church. He was a U. S. Army Veteran of WW II and served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre where he saw combat in New Guinea and Luzon, The Philippines. He was the recipient of three bronze stars and the 30 MM expert infantry rifleman badge.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Sally Lucille King; his sons, George King and wife Barbara of Abingdon and Kenny King of the home; his daughters Darlene Jackson and husband Gary of Abingdon and Kathy Boyd and husband Jackie of Lebanon, VA; his sisters, Ruby Roten and husband Herman of Bluefield, VA, Pearl Yost of Ohio and Shirley Kidd and husband Ralph of Nashville, TN; his brother, J. W. King of Woodbridge, VA; his grandson, Raymond Boyd of Lebanon, VA, his granddaughters, Christy Addison and husband Shannon of Bristol, TN, Carrie Jackson and fiancé Michael Kimery of Abingdon, VA and Tia Hensley and husband Bobby of Flag Pond, TN; his great granddaughter, MacKenzie Addison of Bristol, TN and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P. M. Friday, January 25, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Ancil Childress and Rev. John Stapleton officiating. The Family will receive friends from 11:00 A. M. Friday until the time of service at the funeral Home. Burial will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon. Military graveside rites will be provided by Highlands Fellowship Honor Color Guard. Pallbearers will be Don Boyd, Doug Addison, Shannon Addison, Michael Kimery, Raymond Boyd, Pat Martin, Bobby Hensley and Earl Ratliff. Honorary pallbearers will be Lucas Bates, Anthony Yates, Mack Hale, Paul Shepherd and the Men of Rowe Pentecostal Church.

The family wishes to give special thanks to the nurses, social workers and staff of Wellmont Hospice and the staff of Aid & Assist.

James Clifford Reynolds

Mr. James Clifford Reynolds, age 65, passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at his residents.

Mr. Reynolds was born January 21, 1943 to the late Donald Reynolds and the late Lola Foulks Reynolds in Lorain, Ohio. Mr. Reynolds was a United States Army Veteran and he had lived for the past thirteen years in Abingdon.

Mr. Reynolds is survived by his wife Doris Reynolds; five daughters, Tina Reynolds of Meadowview, Tracy Moyer and husband, Donald of Abingdon, Becky Kennell and husband Robert of Lorain, Ohio, Cindy Hershman and husband, John of Cambridge, Ohio, Jamie White and husband, Charles of Lorain, Ohio, and estranged brother; Donald Reynolds of Lorain, Ohio and one sister, Donna Mucha of Lorain, Ohio. 12 grandchildren; Heather Moyer, James Moyer, Alycia Moyer, Traylee Pizzillo, Courtney Pizzillo, Tahlia Pizzillo, Amandah Kennell, Dylan Kennell, Lyndsie Kennell, David Hershman, William White, and Emily White.

At Mr. Reynolds request no service will be conducted. The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. Reynolds at anytime. 25057 Lee Highway Abingdon, Virginia 24210.

The family would like to send thanks to the nurses and staff of Hospice of Norton, Virginia.

Mary Eleanor Baker

Ms. Mary E. Clark Baker, age 60, went to be with her Lord on January 24, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

She was a resident of Abingdon before moving to New York City for 28 years where she worked at Alexander Department Store for 22 years. She was a member of First Union Baptist Church in Bronx, New York. After retiring from Alexander Department Store she returned back to Abingdon, Virginia where she became a member of Charles Wesley United Methodist Church in Abingdon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mrs. Credell H. Fonte and Floyd Clark, Sr. and a sister Peggy Clark Brown.

She leaves to cherish her memory her only daughter, Paula R. Walker and son-in-law Steven Walker of New York City. Her grandchildren, Porsche, Alexis and Marques Williams. Special sister/cousin; Sylvia S. Stuart, sisters, Izetta Robinson of Abingdon, Carolyn and Larry Sampson of Somerset, New Jersey, Alice McKesson of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Charlene Stigger of Abingdon. Brothers; Floyd Clark, Jr. and his wife, Jeanette Clark of Elizabethton, TN and Jack and his wife, Glenda Clark of Atlanta, GA, special cousin; John Sheffey and a host of nieces, nephews and close friends.

The memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, January 28, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Donald Swift officiating. The interment service will follow in High Point cemetery. The family will receive friends in the funeral home on Sunday, January 27, 2008 from 6-8 P.M.

The family would like to give a special thanks to; Dr. James Denton, Dr. William Cummings, Dr. Simon Pennings and the 3rd floor nursing staff in CCU at Johnston Memorial Hospital.
