Virgie Lee Blackwell Crabtree

Virgie Lee Blackwell Crabtree, age 85, passed away Friday, January 25, 2008 in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion, VA, after a long illness.

She was the daughter of the late George Washington and Sallie Helton Blackwell. She was a lifelong resident of the Blackwell Chapel Community of Washington County where her late husband, William H. Crabtree, owned and operated the Crabtree Grocery for over 40 years. She was also preceded in death by four brothers: Clarence, Jim, Ernest and Roscoe Blackwell.

She was an avid gardener.

She is survived by three sisters: Lucille Snodgrass, Bristol, VA, Mary Martin, Emory, VA, Polly Hoback, Roanoke, VA, four nieces and six nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted Sunday, January 27, 2008 at 8:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Service, Main Street Chapel with Pastor Scott Spence officiating.

The committal service will be conducted Monday, January 28, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. in Knollkreg Memorial Park. Those attending are asked to assemble at the funeral home by 2:30 p.m. The procession will leave at 2:50 p.m.

Pallbearers will be nephews and family. Honorary pallbearers will be James Crabtree, Johnny Crabtree, Thomas Eddy and Danny Atwell.

The family will receive friends Sunday, January 27, 2008 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the funeral home.

Shirley Deel

Shirley Ann Elswick Deel, 59, died at her home on Saturday, January 26, 2008 after a very long illness.

She fought a courageous battle with kidney failure. She was a retired employee of Natalie Knitting Company, Chilhowie, VA. She was the daughter of the late Kenis and Jane Stiltner Elswick. Her family was the most important thing in her life. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and wife. She will be sadly missed by her family and all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband of 37 years, William C. Deel, three daughters: Melissa Coalson and husband Johnny, Marsha Deel all of Glade Spring, VA and Misty Hasty and husband Mitch, Meadowview, VA, six grandchildren: Jessica Tilson and husband William, Jonathan Coalson and wife BreeAnne, William and Travis Cannon, Julian and Nathan Hasty, one great- granddaughter: Hannah Jane Tilson, three brothers: Frank and Don Elswick, Abingdon, VA, Bill Elswick, Big Rock, VA, seven sisters: Genny Johnson, Mary Ward and Ola Lambert all of Grundy, VA, Sandy Deel, Vansant, VA, Ruby Potter, Belfast, VA, Carol Mullins, Church Road, VA and Velma Trembly, Portsmouth, VA.

The funeral service will be conducted Monday, January 28, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Service, Main Street Chapel with Rev. Frank Newsome, Rev. Freddie Ramey, Rev. William McClanahan and Rev. Danny Yates officiating.

The committal service will be conducted Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Old Glade Presbyterian cemetery with Rev. Paul Ketron officiating. Those attending are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 1:55 p.m.

The family would like to thank Home Health and Hospice for all of their support.

The family will receive friends Monday, January 28, 2008 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in the funeral home.

Beulah Mae Hubble

Mrs. Beulah Mae Hubble, age 89, died January 26, 2008 in National Health Care Center of Bristol after a brief illness.

Beulah was born in Russell County, Virginia and lived there until she moved to Bristol in 1958. She was employed as a dental assistant. She was a member of Midway Baptist Church.

Beulah is preceded in death by her husband, Walter Byrd Hubble her parents, Will and Dona Robinson, three sisters, Virgie McCloud, Audrey Williams, and Merlie Rasnic Wallace, two brothers, Jimmy Robinson, and Newlin Robinson, and daughter-in-law-, Barbara Hubble and son-in-law, Bill Hickman.

Beulah is survived by her children Merlie “Chubby” Johnson and husband, R.B., Nancy Hickman, Roger Hubble and wife, Ruth and Ronnie Hubble and wife, Laura. Ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Beulah loved her family, friends, and flowers especially roses.

The funeral service will be conducted at 7 P.M. Sunday, January 27, 2008 in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service (Located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens 19415 Lee Highway Abingdon, VA) with Rev. Dexter Terry officiating. The family will receive friends in the Forest Hills Chapel from 5 to 7 P.M. on Sunday, January 27, 2008. The interment service will be conducted 2 P.M. Monday, January 28, 2008 in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. All those wishing to attend are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 1:45 P.M. Pallbearers will be granddaughters and grandsons.

Arthur Fields

Arthur Fields, age 72, went to be with the Lord on January 25, 2008.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Flora Fields; his brother Clinton Fields, and his daughter Carolyn Jessee.

Mr. Fields lived his life as a devoted Christian. He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by everyone.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Rachel Lowe Fields; his three sons: Jimmy Fields and wife Terry; Joseph Fields; and John Fields and wife April, all of Abingdon, VA; his daughter, Barbara Stallard and husband Morris of Saltville, VA; his son-in-law, Barry Jessee; his sister Birtie Little; his brother Dewey Fields and wife Rosie all of Abingdon, VA; several grandchildren, several great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Monday, February 4, 2008, in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Johnny Spencer and Rev. Howard Rowe officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. View United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 1:00 P. M. until the time of the funeral service. The family is also gathering at the home of his son, Jimmy Fields, 5038 Little Wolf Run Road, Bristol, VA.

Madge Lee Inscore

Madge Lee (Polly) Inscore passed away Monday, January 28, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA after a brief illness.

Born in West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Robert Monroe Inscore and Kansas Louella Taylor Inscore. She was also preceded in death by her brother Ronald Inscore.

Polly was a longtime resident of Washington County, VA and was employed at Westinghouse Corporation until the time of the plant closure. She was also a former employee of the Abingdon Journal-Virginian Newspaper. She attended the Trigg Street Church of God.

Survivors include four sisters, Ruby Decker and husband Joe of Norfolk, VA, Peggy Lou Gobble and husband Bob of Bristol, VA, T. S. Inscore and Kathy York both of Abingdon, VA; three brothers, Gene Inscore and wife Kitty, John Inscore and wife Peggy Joyce, and Bobby Inscore and wife Mildred all of Abingdon; several aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Thursday, January 31, 2008 at the Blackwell’s Chapel cemetery with Pastors Wayne Chant and Roger O’Quinn officiating. Those attending are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 1:50 p.m. At Polly’s request, there will be no formal visitation at the funeral home. However anyone who wishes may stop by the funeral home to sign a guest register for the family. The family will receive friends and guests at any time at the home of her brother, John Inscore, 27821 Honey Locust Road, Abingdon, VA or at the home of her other brothers and sisters. In place of flowers, the family has asked that memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Central and Western Virginia Chapter Office, 674 Hillsdale Drive, Suite 1, Charlottesville, VA 22901.

Marvin Richard Owens, Jr.

Marvin Richard Owens, Jr., age 40, died Monday, January 28, 2008 from injuries received in an ATV accident.

Richard was a native of West Virginia and had resided in Abingdon for the past twenty-three years. He was preceded in death by his father, Marvin Richard Owens, Sr. and his maternal grandfather, Corley Hamrick.

Survivors include his mother and her husband, Wilma and Larry Green, Webster Springs, W.VA,
one son, Justin Richard McCracken Clevinger, W. VA, two daughters, Desteni Owens and Danazia Owens both of Wytheville, VA, one half-brother, Hank Owens, Damascus, VA, two sisters, Cindy Barbe and husband James and Brenda McCourt and husband Chris all of Webster Springs, W. VA, paternal grandparents, Larkin and Martha Owens both of Meadowview, VA,
maternal grandmother, Arzona Hamrick, Webster Springs, W. VA, a niece, Tuesday McCourt, a nephew, Shamus McCourt, many uncles, aunts and cousins, former wife, Kelli Owens Davidson, Wytheville, VA.

The family will receive friends Thursday, January 31, 2008 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Home, Abingdon, VA.
The funeral and burial will be Saturday, February 2, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. in Webster Springs,
W.VA.

Minnie B. LaRue

Minnie B. LaRue, 95, formerly of Abingdon and Tazewell, Virginia, died Tuesday, January 29, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband J. S. (Spurgeon) LaRue as well as her parents and siblings. She was born in Kimball, West Virginia and spent the early years of her marriage in Bartley, West Virginia. She was a long-time member of the Order of the Eastern Star, belonging to chapters in Berwind (now Bramwell), Tazewell, Abingdon, Bluefield and Bristol. She was also a member of both the Knoxville, TN and the Bristol TN/VA chapters of the Embroiderers Guild of America. She was a patron of the Arts Depot, Barter Theater and William King Center for the Arts in Abingdon.
Mrs. LaRue served for many years as a volunteer at Johnston Memorial Hospital and was elected as Volunteer of the Year in 1994. At the time of her move to Lexington, she had served for 14, 000 hours as a hospital volunteer. Her generosity in teaching others to weave, knit, crochet, tat and embroider introduced her to a wide circle of people wherever she lived. She always supported charitable events with the products of her talented fingers.
At the time of her death, she was a resident of Kendal at Lexington. She became an enthusiastic member of the community at Kendal, volunteering in the Assisted Living area and as a weekend receptionist. She was an accomplished bridge player and belonged to bridge groups at each of her homes.
She is survived by her son, Lewis H. LaRue (Susan) of Lexington, Virginia; her daughter, Fay Andrews (Douglas) of Morristown, Tennessee; six grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, February 2, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, Va.). The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1:00 p.m. Entombment will follow in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Forest Hills.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Rockbridge Area Hospice, P.O. Box 948, Lexington, Va. 24450; Kendal Staff Appreciation Fund or Fellowship Fund, 160 Kendal Dr., Lexington, Va. 24450 or the American Heart Association.

Garnett Elmer Taylor

Garnett Elmer Taylor, age 67, died Tursday, January 31, 2008. He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Ada (Caudell) Taylor, his brother, Jerry Taylor, and a grandchild, Timothy Neece.

He is survived by three children: Junior Taylor of Fall Branch, TN; Gary Taylor of Meadowview, VA, and Becky Kegley of Abingdon, VA; one sister, Faye Price of Abingdon; one brother, Billy Taylor of Glade Spring, VA; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild and two nephews.

A graveside service for Garnett Taylor will be held at Caudell cemetery at 2:00 p.m, Sunday, February 3, 2008, with Rev. Roger O’Quinn officiating. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Haley T. Webb

Mr. Haley Thomas Webb, Sr., 78, died Sunday June 1, 2008 at the Select Specialty Hospital. Mr. Webb was born and raised in Franklin County, Virginia and had lived in Washington County for 48 years. He was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church in Meadowview. He retired from U.S. Gypsum with 30 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gardenia Webb, his parents, and a son Tim Watkins.

He is survived by 5 sons; Fred Watkins of Washington D.C., Richard Watkins of Bristol, VA, Haley Thomas Webb, Jr. and Mark Webb both of Bristol, TN, and Stanley Webb of Johnson City; 2 daughters; Delores Fullen of Bristol, TN and Barbara Webb of Johnson City; 1 brother; Edward Webb of Franklin Co, VA; 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, June 7, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with the Rev. William Austin officiating. The family will receive friends immediately prior to the service beginning at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in the Meadowview cemetery. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Blanche Leota Fraley Anderson

Blanche Leota Fraley Anderson, age 96, died Monday, June 2, 2008 at Grace Healthcare center in Abingdon., VA. after a lengthy illness.

Blanche was born on May 23, 1912 in Washington County, Virginia. She was a daughter of the late William H. Fraley, Sr. and Nora Long Fraley. She was also preceded in death by her husband Alexander C. Anderson; her brother, W. H. Fraley, Jr. and her sister, Nina Fraley.

She had worked with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington D. C. for 35 years and had lived in Fairfax, VA until her retirement at which time she moved to Bristol, VA. While living in Bristol, she was a member of State Street United Methodist Church where she attended faithfully until her illness prevented her from doing so. She had formerly resided at the Westhaven Retirement Center in Abingdon for 8 years.

Blanche is survived by her sister-in-law, Ollie Fraley of Abingdon; her nephew, James W. Fraley and wife Eveleen of Abingdon; her nieces, Laurice Hayton and husband Stanley of Kingsport, TN and Annette F. Lester and husband Roger of Abingdon, VA; 5 great-grand nieces and nephews and 7 great-great grand nieces and nephews.

A cryptside funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 P. M. Wednesday, June 4, 2008 in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Knollkreg Memorial Park with Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating. Entombment will follow the service. The family will receive friends Wednesday in the Mausoleum Chapel from 2:00 P. M. until the time of the funeral service.

Daniel Nelson Hensley

Daniel Nelson Hensley passed away on June 5, 2008 at his home. He was born on February 22, 1982 in Havre de Grace, Maryland. He was a graduate of Abingdon High School and Virginia Highlands Community College.

Daniel was preceded in death by his mother, Connie Stahler.

He is survived by his father, Lester Neal Hensley, Abingdon, VA, two brothers, Lester Neal Hensley, Jr., Myrtle Beach, SC and Eugene Bascom Hensley, Florida, one sister, Melissa Ann Adams, Thief River Falls, Minnesota.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 8, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. in the Valley View Freewill Baptist Church in the Spoon Gap Community with Pastor Greg Dingus and Rev. Ken Holmes officiating. Burial will follow in the Valley View cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Brad Bailey, Eric Bailey, Will Ennis, Brandon Hensley and Kenneth Ray Hensley, Jr. Adam Roark, Tony Roark, Jr., and Derrick Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Daniel Jones, Tony Roark, Heath DeBusk and Danny Rowe.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. in the Valley View Freewill Baptist Church or anytime at the home of Goldie Roark.

Jacob Tyler Bowers

Jacob Tyler Bowers, age 18, died Thursday, June 5, 2008, as a result of an accidental drowning. Tyler was a 2008 graduate of John S. Battle High School. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, James C. Bowers, Sr., and Ray Moretz, and by his great-grandfather, Clarence James Bowers.

Tyler is survived by his mother Melissa Viers and step-father Eric Viers of Bristol; his father James C. Bowers, Jr. of Bristol; his grandparents: Shirley Moretz, Floye Tester and Roy Tester, all of Bristol; his sister, Heather Bowers of Bristol; his aunts: Lisa Blackson of Abingdon; Teresa Johnson of South Riding, VA; Carla King of New Mexico; and Wanda G. Rouse of Bristol; and several cousins.

The funeral service for Tyler Bowers will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 9, 2008, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Jimmy Epperson and Rev. Howard Leonard officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. View cemetery in Bristol. Friends will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends Monday at the funeral home from noon until the time of service.

Mary Louise Fitzpatrick

Mary Louise (Mary Lou) Moxley Fitzpatrick, age 83, died Saturday, June 7, 2008 at the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, TN.

Mary Lou was born on May 2, 1925 in Mount Vernon, Ohio, a daughter of the late Clarence Moxley and Grace Poole Moxley. She was a graduate of Mt. Vernon High School and graduated with a major in psychology from Columbian College in Washington D. C. which is now known as American University.

Before her marriage, she had worked at the Review and Herald Newspaper in Tacoma Park, MD, the Chief of Naval Offices at the Pentagon in Washington D. C and the Federal Communications Commission also. It was during this time that she had a blind date with George R. Ftizpatrick, who would later become her husband of 52 years. He would retire as Lt. Colonel with the United States Air Force. He had a distinguished career in which he served during WW II, Korea and Vietnam. Lt. Colonel Fitzpatrick was responsible for developing the first 'ground-traffic' radar system.

She was very proud of her ancestry and more specifically that she descends from four of the Mayflower Pilgrims, Miles Standish, John Alden, Pricilla Mullins and William Mullins.

Mary Lou was active in supporting her husband's military career and raising their family Upon his retirement form the military, they made their home in McLean, Virginia where Mr. Fitzpatrick continued his working career with Page Northrup and Corland Communications.

Survivors include her daughters, Karen Marleen Fitzpatrick Hall and husband Harold Raymond Hall, Jr. and Colleen Fitzpatrick Batsakis and husband George John Batsakis; her son, John Thorpe Tyler, Jr.; her grandchildren, Morgan Fitzpatrick Hall, Brittany Nicole Hall, William Phillips (Phillip) Bass III; Ryan Walsh, Dustin Walsh, Georgie Grace Batsakis, Mary Margaret (Maggie) Basakis and Christopher Thorpe Tyler; her great grandchildren, John Terry Tyler and Sarah Tyler.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 7:00 P. M. Monday, June 9, 2008 at St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church in Bristol, Virginia with Rev. Timothy E. Keeney as celebrant. The family will receive friends at the church from 6:00 P. M. until the time of the service.

Mary Lou will be taken to the Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon, Virginia. A service will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at the funeral home chapel. Burial beside her husband will take place at a later date in Arlington National cemetery.

In place of flowers, the family has asked that those wishing to honor Mary Lou's memory to please consider memorial donations to the Education Fund of St. Anne, Roman Catholic Church, 300 Euclid Avenue, Bristol, VA 24201.

The family wishes to recognize the nursing staff of 2 West at Bristol Regional Medical Center for their kindness shown to Mary Lou and her family.
