William Luther Smith

William “Bill” Luther Smith, age 47, died Sunday, March 23, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.

Bill was born in Washington County Virginia on January 19, 1961, a son of William “Bill” Howard Smith and the late Lois Collins Smith. He was a 1979 graduate of Abingdon High School and attended King College.

Survivors in addition to his father include his sons, Jacob D. Smith and Nicholas C. Smith both of Bristol, VA; his sisters, Rachel Brown of Abingdon and Jenny Bryant and husband Dennis also of Abingdon; his nephew, Josh Bryant and his niece Cali Bryant.

A cryptside memorial service will be conducted at 10:30 A. M. Thursday, march 27, 2008 in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon with Rev. Bryan Hall officiating. Those attending the service are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 10:20 A. M.

The family will receive friends at the home of his sons, Jacob and Nicholas Smith, 24218 Jordan Lane, Bristol, VA or at his father’s home, 19416 Mercedes Drive, Abingdon, VA.

Steve Aaron Terry

Steve Aaron Terry, age 46, passed away Monday, March 24, 2008 in Johnston Memorial Hospital.

He is survived by his parents Roger and Rosa Mullins of Meadowview; his soul mate, Rainey Terry of Damascus; son, Aaron Keith Terry, Bristol, TN and step-son, Justin Phillips, Maryland; step-daughter, Jamie Lea Phillips, Florida; brother, Carl Terry.

There will be a graveside service Thursday, March 27, 2008 at Forest Hills Memory Gardens at 2:00 P.M. Mr. Robert Carty will be officiating. There will be a visitation on Thursday, March 27, 2008 from 12:00 until 1:45 p.m. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens 19415 Lee Highway Abingdon, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Noel Turner, Jonathan Mahala, Dewey Mahala, Jody Davis, Tim Killion, John Wolfe and Will Widener.

Sallie Mae Reynolds

Mrs. Sallie Mae Reynolds, 71, passed Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at the Wellmont Hospice House after a lengthy illness. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and a member of Mountain View Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Charlie and Lela Osborne Delp. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Hal Reynolds and one brother Thomas Delp. She was a resident of Grace Health Care in Abingdon.

She is survived by her son, Randy Reynolds of Abingdon; 3 daughters, Cathie Segar of Tucson, AR, Donia Sue Reynolds of Abingdon, and Elaine Rasnake of Abingdon; 2 brothers, Jack Delp of Abingdon, and Dick Delp of California; 6 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, March 29, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home; however, friends may visit with the family at the home of Mrs. Reynolds.

Mildred K. Scott

Mildred K. Castle Petty Scott, age 85 passed away after a brief illness at Sacred Heart Hospital of the Emerald Coast in Destin, FL on Friday, March 21, 2008. She was born July 10, 1922 in Wise Co VA to James Charlie Castle and Anna Mae Castle.

She was preceded in death by her husband and the father of her children, Edward C. Petty, Sr., and by her second husband, Hulen Scott. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia Reed and her grandson, Mark Weddle.

Mildred is survived by her son, Edward C. Petty, Jr., and wife Rita and family of Milton, WV.; her daughter, Vivian Maxwell and husband Clint of Destin, FL.; her grandson, Oran Zaebst and wife Misty of Bristol, Va,; granddaughter, Sheri Macomber and husband Will, grandson, James Reed; her great granddaughters Amie and Ashley Thompson all of Montgomery, AL., She is also survived by her granddaughter, Susan Arnette and husband Chad and her two young great grandsons, Chase and Jackson Arnette all of Pensacola, FL. Mildred is also survived by her sister Shelby Blankenship of Bluefield, VA and her half-brother James Castle of Honaker, VA. She was a member of Pleasant View United Methodist Church, Abingdon, VA.

A graveside service will be held at a later date in Forest Hills Memory Gardens, Abingdon, VA.

Ann Boyd Brown

Ann Boyd Brown, age 60, passed away on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville TN. Ann will be greatly missed by all of those who knew her.

Ann was born in Russell County VA to the late Taylor Boyd and Polly Gose. Ann was a member of the Lebanon Baptist Church. She graduated from Lebanon High School where she was active in many school activities. Ann graduated from Lees McCrae College prior to completing the Medical Records program at MCV in Richmond. Ann was known for her love of animals and especially horses. She received such fulfillment and joy as she worked as a volunteer with the Wonder Kids Program in Abingdon. Ann retired from Johnston Memorial Hospital in 1995 where she worked as Director of Medical Records.

Ann is survived by her soul mate and love of her life, her husband, Dr. Bob L. Brown; three brothers, John Jenks and wife Elaine, Amarillo, TX, Bob Jenks and wife Ann, Casstown, OH, and Jimmy Jenks, Cocoa Beach, FL; one brother-in-law, Dr. Ronnie L. Brown and wife, Jeannie, Abingdon, VA; one sister-in-law, Nancy Brown, Abingdon, VA, several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.

Funeral services for Ann Boyd Brown will be conducted on Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at 7 pm at the Lebanon Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Edwards officiating. At the family’s request there will be no visitation. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. The family request that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to: The Animal Defense League, PO Box 2099, Abingdon, VA and the Wonder Kids Program, PO Box 17023, Bristol VA 24209.

Don Mullins

Don Mullins, age 62, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at 12:10 P. M.

He was born on December 24, 1945 in Haysi Virginia. Don Worked for over forty years as a welder, foreman and superintendent for Steamfitters Local 602 in Washington D. C. He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Junior Mullins.

He is survived by his mother, Arbutus Fern Mullins of Emory, VA; his children, Donald W. Mullins and wife Gailynn of Gainesville, VA and Teresa M. Propps-Smith of Annapolis, MD; five grandchildren; his brothers and sisters, John C. Mullins and wife Gwen of Bowie, MD, Ralph Mullins and wife Angie of Emory, VA, Roy David Mullins of Emory, VA, Patricia Davis and husband Robert of Maysville, WV and Janice Deel of Damascus, VA and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Monday, March 31, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Tim Stevens officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Shane Mullins, Brandon Mullins, Andrew Mullins, Lee Deel, Matthew Mullins and Connor Mullins. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 12:00 Noon until the time of the funeral service.

Clara Juanita Emmert

Mrs. Clara Juanita Emmert, 79, died Saturday March 29, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and was preceded in death by her husband Richard Emmert.

She is survived by 2 sons, Curtis Emmert of Bristol, TN and Darwin Emmert of Cincinnati, OH; 1 daughter, Judy Moorefield of Abingdon; 1 brother, Vance Whitaker of Damascus; 9 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday April 1, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Pastor John Stapleton officiating. Entombment will follow. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to assemble at the cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday March 31, 2008 from 7-9 p.m. at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.

Louise Grant Dye

Louise Grant Dye, age 61, passed away Saturday, March 29, 2008 at her home.

Louise was born on August 15, 1946 in Washington County, Virginia. She was a daughter of the late Lacy Marshall Grant and Eleanor Leonard Grant. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, John Marshall Grant and William Frank Grant.

She was a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University and was a retired teacher with the Washington County School System. Louise attended Damascus Road Baptist Church and had retained her membership at Bethel Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Homer Beverly Dye; her son, Matthew Dye of Bluff City, TN; her daughter, Bobbie Jo Bishop of Abingdon; her grandsons, Christopher Gage Overbay, Kaelan Gene Fuller and Matthew Bryce Bishop; her brothers, Robert Ryan Grant of Whitehouse, OH and James W. Grant of Torrance, CA and Timothy L. Grant of Abingdon; her sisters, Eula Grant and Shirley Rhoten, both of Abingdon and Mary Gay Schunke of Marion, NC and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Wednesday, April 2, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. John E. Massey, Jr. and Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon. Pallbearers will be Kelly Waugh, Tommy Waugh, David Waugh, Michael Rhoten, Jeff Hensley and Junior Grant. The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.

George Washington Stuart

George Washington Stuart, 78, died Sunday March 30, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was the son of the late Ezekiel and Virginia Stuart. He was of the Baptist faith and attended Rosedale Baptist Church. He worked several years at Meadowview Plant Farm and Kealey-Johnson Greenhouse. He was co-owner and operator of Stuart’s Greenhouse of Meadowview. He was well-known for the quality of his plants and flowers. He was an avid fisherman and a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was preceded in death by a brother Gilford Dutch Stuart and a sister Margie Harold.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rhoda Jane Stuart; his sons, George David Stuart and wife Sherrie, and Joseph Mike Stuart and wife LeDonna; his grandchildren, Deana Stuart of Johnson City, Jenny Stuart Mutter and husband Brian, Amanda Stuart, Brent Stuart and wife Jenifer, and Bradley Stuart, all of Meadowview; great grandchildren, Logan and Jacob Mutter, and Isabella Stuart; 1 sister, Mary Neal of Alvarado; and 3 brothers, Bill Stuart of Abingdon, Tom Stuart of Bristol, and Stoney Stuart of Abingdon.

The funeral service will be conducted Tuesday April 1, 2008 at 8:00 p.m. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon with Rev. Don Paxton and Rev. Jimmie Davidson officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 6 p.m.

The committal service will be conducted Wednesday April 2, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Brian Mutter, Brent Stuart, Bradley Stuart, Dwayne Duffield, Shane Harris, and Jackie Stuart. Honorary pallbearers will be the Senior Adult men’s Sunday school class at Rosedale Baptist Church and Cecil Clifton.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memorial Program, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or to Rosedale Baptist Church, 26396 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA 24211.

Adeline Kingery Moore

Mrs. Adeline Kingery Moore, 92 passed away Saturday, November 1, 2008 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital.

She was a native of Franklin County, Virginia and moved to this area in 1952 from Roanoke, VA. Mrs. Moore was a graduate of Radford College, a retired teacher with the Washington County School System, a member of the Linda Rice Circle, the Holston Hills Extension Club and her friends bridge club, a member of the Women’s Missionary Union and a member of Abingdon Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter P. Kingery and Mary Ella Hudson Kingery, her husband, Chester H. Moore, a son, Chester Kingery Moore, a brother, Charles F. Kingery and a sister, Emma Lee Renick, a sister-in-law, Fern Moore.

She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Ann Young, and Jane Hudson Waters both of Abingdon, VA, two brothers, William R. Kingery and wife Catherine and Walter P. Kingery, Jr., and wife Diane all of Rocky Mount, VA, a daughter-in-law, Barbara Moore, Murrell’s Inlet, SC, a sister-in-law, Berta Moore, Wirtz, VA, five grandsons, Roy P. “JR” Young, San Diego, CA, Mark Moore, Kinnelon, NJ, Patrick Moore, Chicago, IL, Trey Waters, Southern Pines, NC, Jason Waters, Birmingham, AL two great-granddaughters, Lena Moore, Kinnelon, NJ and D’Juna Moore, Chicago, IL, several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Monday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the Abingdon Baptist Church. The funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Monday, November 3, 2008 in the Abingdon Baptist Church with Dr. Steven Pollard officiating. Interment will follow on Tuesday, November 4, 2008 in the Franklin County Memorial Park in Rocky Mount, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Abingdon Baptist Church Building Fund, 361 W. Main Street, Abingdon, VA 24210.

Gaye Easterly

Mrs. Gaye Easterly, age 89, passed away on November 5, 2008, at her home. She had lived in Abingdon for the past 63 years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Frank Easterly, Jr. and her sister, Faye VanDyke.

Gaye was born in Russell County to the late Hobert and Lockie Meade Owens. She taught school in Washington, Wythe and Russell Counties. She loved to read. She was a wonderful cook and a care taker for many.

Survivors include her daughter Kittye Owens and husband Charles, Bristol, VA; two granddaughters, Angie Owens and husband Dwight, Bristol, TN, and Pam Clements and husband Benjamin, Germantown, TN; five great-grandchildren, Abby Owens, Caroline Clements, Owen Clements, Ethan Owens, and Rebecca Clements; one brother Bill Owens and wife Barbara, Abingdon, VA and their daughters Terry and Karen; one brother-in-law, Sam VanDyke, Abingdon, VA; one sister-in-law Jane Murph and husband Bob, Kingsport, TN; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service for Gaye Easterly will be held on Friday, November 7, 2008, at 8:00 pm at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Jim Goddard and Rev. Amy Bartee officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00-7:45 pm prior to the service.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Those wishing to attend the graveside are asked to be at the cemetery by 10:50 am. Pallbearers will be Dwight Owens, Benjamin Clements, Bill Webster, Bill Easterly, Larry Thomas, Bob Boatwright, and Guy Warner. Honorary pallbearers will be Betty Gentry and Betty Webster. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to Pleasant View United Methodist Church, 18416 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA 24210 or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. The family would like to express a special thanks to Dr. Prill and Tara and Wellmont Hospice.
