Maudie G. Street

Maudie G. Street, age 85, passed away Wednesday, November 5, 2008. Wife, mother, grandma and friend, Maudie G. Street, was the description of love. She lived her life to serve others, bearing all things, believing all things, hoping all things and enduring all things. (I Corinthians 13:7). She was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.

Born October 11, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Harve and Matilda O’Quinn. She was also preceded in death by husband Link M Street and first husband Clair Rowe; children Sue Rowe Loflin, Joan Rowe Keen, Rufus (Buck) and wife, Anna (Sis) Rowe; infant daughter Marie Rowe; sisters Myrtle Jackson, Lacy Compton and Dollie Sisk; brothers Roley O’Quinn and Tivis O’Quinn; step-children Betty Jo Street, Jerry Street and Wanda Owens.

She is survived by her daughter Gay Rowe of Abingdon, VA; sons Harold Rowe and wife Lilo, of Bristol, TN, and Denny Rowe and wife Barbara, of Abingdon, VA; one half-sister, Bonnie McGhee of Oregon; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, all of whom loved her dearly; several nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends.

The funeral service for Maudie G. Street will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, November 6, 2008, at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, with Reverend Ronnie Matney and Ancil Childress officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. – 6:45 p.m. prior to the service Thursday evening. The committal service and burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Those planning to attend the graveside service may meet at the cemetery by 10:50 a.m. Pallbearers will be grandsons and family members.

Muncy L. Canter

Muncy L. Canter, age 78, passed away on Saturday, November 8, 2008 at his home.

Born on December 12, 1929 in Washington County, Virginia, he was a son of the late Ernest Canter and Sarah Horton Canter. He attended Victory Baptist Church in Bristol and had previously lived in Lubbock, Texas before he and his wife moved back to the Bristol area. While living in Texas, he had worked as a machinist for several years before his retirement.

Survivors include his loving wife Geneva Wilson Canter; his daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Marshall McWilliams of Medina, TX; his brother, Clint Canter of Chilhowie, VA; his sisters, Lacy Mae Grogan and Nancy Jane Smith both of Bristol, VA; four grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Monday, November 10, 2008 in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens) with Dr. Austin Cook and Rev. Eddie Crusenberry officiating. Friends will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the Forest Hills Chapel from 12:00 Noon until the time of the funeral service. Entombment will follow in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

Sue Ratcliffe Powers

Sue Powers, age 75, passed away from this life to be with her Lord on November 8, 2008.

She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Mattie Ratcliffe; her sisters Mary, Annie, Hazel and Gayle. Sue was of the Baptist faith having accepted Jesus into her heart and life many years ago.

Sue is survived by her husband Leo Powers and her nephew Bobby Lester.

Friends may visit with the family from 6:00 – 7:45 P. M. Monday, November 10, 2008 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. A funeral service will follow at 8:00 P. M. with Brother Van Seal and Brother Pat Gilbert officiating. The committal and burial service will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Tuesday in Mount Rose cemetery in Glade Spring, VA. Friends will serve as pallbearers. Those attending the service Tuesday are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 10:50 A. M.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Patel, Dr. Cowan and Dr. Henry for their care that they showed Sue. Thanks are also extended to the many friends and neighbors who have been so kind and also to her caregivers Cheri, Dee and Janie. The family wishes as well to remember and thank the staff of Valley Health Care Center and her hospice nurses for their care and support.

Walter Stacy

Walter Stacy, age 84, carpenter extraordinaire, passed away Sunday, November 9, 2008 at the home of his daughter Gwinda Mullins following a brief illness.

Born on April 26, 1924 in Paynesville, WV, Walter was a son of the late Charlie Stacy and Pattie Church Stacy. His maternal grandparents were the late Wiley and Victoria Church of Paynesville, WV. He was raised by his paternal grandparents the late John R. And Katherine Stacy also of Paynesville, WV.

Walter was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ and was currently attending the Macedonia Church of Christ in Abingdon. Walter was much loved and respected in his community. After becoming disabled as a coal miner with Jewel Ridge Coal Corp., he became a carpenter by trade, building not only furniture and homes, but a strong foundation for his family and friends alike.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Sarah Jane Kennedy Stacy (2005); his lovely daughter, Linda June Stacy (1989); his sisters Erma Boze, Chloe and Francis Stacy; his brothers Willard, Edward and England Stacy and his step-brother, Burl Stacy.

Walter is survived by his children, Gwinda Sue Mullins of Abingdon, VA; Lois Ann Mitchem of Riverview, FL, Donna Gay Kramb of Catlett, VA and Danny Ray Stacy of Gordonsville, VA; 11 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; his sisters, Bessie Keene of Richlands, VA and Flora Vickers of Goodwater, AL.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 6:45 P. M. Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. A funeral service will follow at 7:00 P. M. with Pastors Ronnie Musick and Hobert Kennedy officiating. A graveside committal and burial service will be conducted at 1:00 P. M. Thursday, November 13, 2008 in Stafford Memorial Park in Stafford, Virginia with Pastor Bill Bates officiating. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for memorial donations to be made to the Autism Society of America, 7910 Woodmont Avenue, Suite 300, Bethesda, MD 20814-3067.

Richard Grayson Swafford

Mr. Richard Grayson Swafford, age 67, passed away on Sunday, November 9, 2008 at the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie, Virginia.

Richard was born in Copperhill, TN and was a son of the late Richard R. Swafford and Euna Mae Davis Swafford. He was also preceded in death by his brother Steve. Richard had lived and worked in Cleveland, TN before moving to the Abingdon, VA area in September. He was a U. S. Army Veteran, having served for 8 years.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Angie & Stanley Haynes of Abingdon, VA; his son and daughter-in-law, Richard Jr. & Teresa Swafford of Chattanooga, TN; his brother and sister-in-law, Randy & Joyce Swafford; his grandchildren, Joshua Haynes, Bethanie Haynes and Hannah Swafford and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service honoring Richard’s life will be held at 2:00 P. M. Tuesday, November 11, 2008 in the Cochran, Fitch & Henry Funeral Home Chapel in McCaysville, GA (706-492-3321). Military honors will be provided by the local honor guard in McCaysville.

Irma Louise McCune

Mrs. Irma Louise McCune, 82, died Saturday, November 8, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Pennsylvania, lived most of her life in Ohio, and had lived in Abingdon for the last 10 years. She was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd McCune in 1992. She was a member of Providence Presbyterian Church in Chilhowie. She spent a lot of her time as a volunteer at Johnston Memorial Hospital and as a member of Wolf Hills Quilters. She was a retired registered nurse with 45 years of service.

She is survived by 2 sons; David McCune and wife Juanita of North Manchester, Indiana, and Pat McCune and wife Susie of Meadowview; 1 brother, Charles Lowmaster of Ohio; 3 sisters, Ethel Rae Naff of Virginia, Maxine McCune of Georgia, and Janet DeLARiva of Pennsylvania; 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

A graveside funeral service will be held in Pennsylvania, and a memorial service will be conducted in Chilhowie at a later date.

William Morgan Dyess

William Morgan Dyess, 68, a resident of Abingdon died Monday, November 10, 2008.

He was born in New York, New York and was a son of the late William B. and Mary Morgan Dyess. Though born in New York, he spent most of his life in Northern Virginia before moving to Abingdon five years ago. He served his country from 1959 until 1965 with the United States Marine Corps and had retired from a career working insurance claims with Aetna and SWS Insurance Services. He enjoyed woodworking, building model ships, and target shooting. He will be missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James B. Dyess

Survivors are his wife, Danie M. Compton Dyess, and sister, Frances Dyess Rodgers and husband, William S. Rodgers of Brentwood, Tennessee.

A graveside committal service will be held at 2:00pm Friday, November 14, 2008 at Mountain Home National cemetery in Mountain Home, Tennessee with Highlands Veteran’s Honor Guard conducting military honors. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:00pm Thursday, November 13, 2008 at Farris Funeral Service, 427 E. Main Street, Abingdon, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 246, Abingdon, Virginia 24212.

John Turner Cook, Jr.

John Turner Cook, Jr., age 65, passed away Wednesday, November 12, 2008, at after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Russell County, Virginia, to the late J. Turner Cook Sr., and Margaret Harrison Cook. He was grandson to Smith and Gertie Cook and Ezra and Lucinda Harrison. He was also preceded in death by a wife, Brenda Roark Cook, and by his twin brothers, Leonard Cook and Lester Cook.

John was of the Christian faith. He always went the extra mile to assure the less fortunate children had Christmas dinners and toys. He will always be remembered for his unique way of making everyone around him laugh with his witty remarks and jokes.

He retired from the US Department of Agriculture in 1994 after having spent 26 years as a meat inspector, twenty years of which he was stationed at Valleydale of Bristol. During this time he received numerous awards for superior performance.

Survivors include his wife since June 14, 2008, Marie Riley Cook of the home; one daughter, Kimberly Dawn and husband Terry Peige of Abingdon; two sons: John T. Cook III and wife Mary of Abingdon, and Gregory Wayne Cook and wife Penny of Abingdon; two granddaughters: Santanna Cook of Bristol, TN, and Margaret Cook of Abingdon; one step-daughter, Jessica Riley of Bristol, Virginia and one step-son, Travis Riley of Damascus; two step-grandsons: William Riley and Eric Nooncester; a step-granddaughter, Alexis Williams; two sisters: Shirley Johnson of Roanoke, VA, and Linda Spiva and husband Ern of Huddleston, VA; three brothers: Frank S. Cook and wife Beulah of Blountville, Tennessee; Robert Cook and wife Fay of Bulls Gap, TN, and Benjamin J. Cook and wife Margaret of Roanoke; a close friend he often referred to as his “other daughter”, Heather Wakefield, and two little neighbors who think of him as an extra PawPaw, Meadow and Landon Shelton.

The funeral service for John T. Cook, Jr., will be held at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, November 13, 2008, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Paul White officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. – 7:45 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home prior to the service. Pallbearers will be nephews Anthony Cook, Christopher Cook, Darren Cook, Mark Cook, Richard Cook, Benny Cook, Ronnie and Jay Spiva. Honorary pallbearers will be David Cook and retired and former Valleydale employees, his “working buddies.”

The committal service and burial will be Friday, November 14, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Forest Hills Memory Gardens

Katherine L. Ritter

Katherine L. Ritter, age 62, went to be with Jesus on Tuesday, November 11, 2008. She passed away at her home.

Katherine was born September 17, 1946 in Bristol and was the daughter of the late Charles and Ester Hartsock Tate of Bristol. She was a member of Shiloh Freewill Baptist Church. She was employed at Trav-a-lite of Bristol for 26 years.

She was survived by her wonderful husband of 44 years, Daniel W. Ritter; daughter, Cathy Newland and husband Robert Newland of Bristol, VA; son, Allen W. Ritter of Bristol, VA; daughter Becky Poore and husband Chad Poore of Abingdon, VA; four granddaughters: Stephanie Miller and husband Adam Miller, Laura Newland, Chloe Ritter and Carrington Hobbs; two grandsons: Cameron Ritter and Christopher Hobbs; one great-grandson, Caleb Miller; two sisters: Rose Stratton and husband, Tom Stratton of Hiltons, VA, and Janie Reed of Washington, DC; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, November 14, 2008 at 1 pm at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Walter Statzer officiating. Pallbearers will be Chad Poore, Robert Newland, Adam Miller, Steven Perrigan, Luke Blankenship, and Richard Leonard. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Thursday, November 13, 2008 at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA 24210. In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions be made to Daniel W. Ritter, c/o Farris Funeral Service, PO Box 427, Abingdon, VA 24212.

James Hubert Watts

James Hubert Watts, 48, passed away Wednesday, November 12, 2008.

He was born in Covington, Virginia and was preceded in death by his father, John “Mac” Watts.

James was an avid outdoorsman and loved entertaining and cooking. He was formerly employed with the United Company and the Martha Washington Inn.

Survivors include his wife, Drema Watts, Abingdon, VA, his mother, Mildred Spitler Watts, Covington, VA, his uncles, Horace Watts, Glen Allen, VA, Fred L. Watts, Wilmington, Delaware, his aunt, Eloise Bowers, Albuquerque, NM, special friends, Richard Dunn, Roanoke, VA, Doug Pritchard, Bristol, VA and Gary Carty, Kingsport, TN.

A graveside service will be conducted Saturday, November 15, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor, VA with Pastor Bill Edmonds officiating.

The family will receive friends Friday, November 14, 2008 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hunters for the Hungry, P. O. Box 2579, Abingdon, VA 24212.

Geneva McCormick

Mrs. Geneva “Polly” McCormick, age 79, passed away on Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was born in Washington County on July 7, 1928 to the late Mack and Lydia Bare Kelly. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Adelbert “Delbert” McCormick, and by her brothers, Donald Watson Kelly and Orville Kelly.

Mrs. McCormick was of the Baptist faith and had worked twenty-five years with Virginia Department of Transportation. She loved flowers, and she enjoyed going on rides through the Meadowview area, watching Wheel of Fortune, and eating candy.

Survivors include her great-nephew, Donnie Kelly, and several other nieces, nephews and cousins. The family offers special thanks to her caregiver, Tammie Helton.

The graveside funeral service for Mrs. Geneva “Polly” McCormick will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, November 16, 2008, at Knollkreg Memorial Park with Barbara Farmer officiating. Those planning to attend the service may meet at the cemetery by 12:50. There will be no formal viewing or visitation at the funeral home, but friends may come by to sign the guest register.
