Hazel Dell Reed

Mrs. Hazel Dell Reed, age 85 passed away Sunday, October 26, 2008 in the Greystone Health Care Center, Blountville, TN.

She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, VA and was preceded in death by her husband, Marion Reed and a brother, John Rosenbaum.

Survivors include three sons, Issac Reed of Rocky Mount, VA; Junior Reed and Robert Reed, both of Greensboro, NC; four daughters, Virgie Thomas of Chilhowie, VA; Cordelia Reynolds of Greensboro, NC; Lula Arnold of Bristol, TN; and Vivian Canter of Roanoke, VA; a special friend, Elsie Carr of Abingdon, VA; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at 8:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Service, Main Street Chapel with Pastor Roger Ball officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. – 7:45 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.

Interment will be conducted Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the Bethel Presbyterian cemetery. Those attending are invited to assemble at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. for the procession to the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Frankie Canter, Kermit Thomas, Jr., Dwayne Campbell, Tommy Arnold, Dennis Canter, Jr., and Jimmy Reynolds.

Pauline Hester McCray Jackson

Pauline Hester McCray Jackson, age 81 passed away on Tuesday, October 28, 2008 in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion, VA.

Born on October 9, 1927 in Washington County, Virginia, Pauline was a daughter of the late Dale McCray and Ruby Johnson McCray. She was also preceded in death by her husband William L. Jackson, her daughter, Teresa Griffey and her brothers James McCray and Charles McCray. Before her illness, she attended the Lighthouse Baptist Church in Saltville, VA.

Survivors include her daughters, Brenda Jackson and Carolyn Call and husband David all of Chilhowie, VA; her sons, Charles Jackson and wife Jackie and Eddie Jackson and wife Joy all of Meadowview, VA; her brother, Garnett McCray of Ocala, FL; her sisters, Hassie Webb of Abingdon and Edith Sanders of Melbourne, FL; several grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 A. M. Thursday, October 30, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Benny Frye officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 -7:45 P. M. prior to the service on Thursday. The committal and burial service will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Friday at the graveside in Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon. A procession will leave at 10:45 A.M. Friday going to the cemetery. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

Lorraine Conley

Lorraine Conley, age 68 passed away Sunday, October 26, 2008 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital.

There are no known surviving family members.

A graveside service will be conducted Thursday, October 30, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

Gregory Alex Cole

Gregory “Greg” Alex Cole, 55, passed away October 27, 2008 in Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tennessee.

He was born October 3, 1953 in Washington County, Virginia and was a son of the late William A. “Bill” and Lillian Nadine Musick Cole. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County and Bristol. Greg was a Graduate of John Battle High School Class of 1972 and had graduated from Virginia Highlands Community College and East Tennessee State University in 1977. He was a member of the national honor society for Boy Scouts of America called the Order of the Arrow and had served his country with the Army National Guard and later with the U.S. Army Reserves. He had worked with Holbrook Surveyors in Bristol and Cole Nurseries and was on the planning committee that helped establish 911 Emergency Services in Washington County. Greg was a collector of military memorabilia and was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hike and camp. He will be missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Willard L. and Vennie Kiser Musick, and paternal grandparents, Arthur and Pauline Stark Cole.

Survivors are his wife, Betsie Anderson Cole; Sisters-in-law, Anna Jo Mesler and husband, Bill of King, North Carolina, Ouida Sexton of Kingsport, Tennessee, and Anita Pierce and husband, Ed of Kingsport; Brother-in-law, Cleve Anderson and wife, Becky of Kingsport; Aunts, Ace Lester and husband, Jim of Bristol, Tennessee, and Joyce Cole of Bristol, Virginia; Uncles, Clyde Cole of Bristol, Virginia, and Dan Cole of Roanoke, Virginia. Numerous Nieces, Nephews, and Cousins also survive.

A celebration of the life of Greg Cole will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2008 at 3:00pm at Suburban Christian Church, 20290 Wood Howell Road, in Bristol, Virginia with the Minister Richard Panell officiating. Family and Friends are welcome to gather and share fond and fun memories of Greg. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the church on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made as memorial contributions to either, Suburban Christian Church, Haven of Rest Ministries, 624 Anderson Street, Bristol, Tennessee 37621, or the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 11454, Alexandria, Virginia 22312.

Jean H. Price

Erma Jean Hamm Price, 81, of Abingdon died Thursday, October 30, 2008 at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tennessee.

She was born July 20, 1927 in Russell County, Virginia to the late Barney Roosevelt and Nannie Jessie Hamm. After graduating from the former Temple Hill High School, she entered Johnston Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, where she became a registered nurse. Mrs. Price dedicated her life to training young people to be loving, caring nurses and to providing the best of care to her patients in her 47 year career at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, C.B. Price; sisters, June Stallard and Roberta Hamm; and brothers, Roy Lee, Edgar McNeil, Claude Henry, and Clyde Emery Hamm.

A loving mother, sister, and grandmother, she is survived by one son, David Allen Price and wife, Suzanne of Greeneville, Tennessee; one special sister and loving caregiver, Peggy Hamm of Castlewood and Abingdon, Virginia; one brother, James Roger Hamm and wife, Paulene of Castlewood, Virginia, step-grandchildren, Ashley Shelton and Beth and Evan Echols of Greeneville, Tennessee, and two step great grandchildren, Geran and Gabriel Echols of Greeneville, Tennessee. She is also survived by her step mother-in-law, Margaret Price and half sister-in-law, Lee Price both of Abingdon; sister-in-law, Mollie Dingus of Kingsport, Tennessee; nieces and nephews, Elizabeth Stallard of Coeburn, Virginia, Reba Gilliam and husband, Roger of Highland Springs, Virginia, Annette Dezarne, Suzanne Sherfey and husband, Nick, and Rebecca Dezarne of Kingsport, Tennessee, James Hamm of Castlewood, Virginia, Roger Hamm of Hohenwall, Tennessee; special nephew, James Stallard and his wife, Betty and son Kevin of Castlewood, Virginia, and several nieces and nephews-in-law. She is also survived by a host of good friends and neighbors.

The family wishes to express special thanks to the nurses, staff and volunteers of Wellmont Hospice House of Bristol, Tennessee, and to Dr. William Baker and his nurse, Belinda of Abingdon for the loving care given to the Price family.

Funeral services for Mrs. Jean Price will be conducted at 2:00pm Sunday, November 2, 2008 at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, with the Rev. Walter Weikel officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Eugene Price, James Crabtree, Eddie Gray, James Stallard, Claude Robert Johnson, and James Carlyle. Honorary Pallbearers will be Kevin Stallard, Evan Echols, Jim Carlyle, Larry Short, and Joe Phipps.

The family will receive friends at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service from 6:00pm until 8:00pm Saturday.

Goldie Pearl Roark

Mrs. Goldie Pearl Roark, 71, of Abingdon went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 29, 2008 at her home.

She had spent most of her life in Abingdon and was the daughter of the late, Bascom Hensley and Alice Hubbard Hensley Isennock. She was a member of Valley View Freewill Baptist Church and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Marion Cicero Roark; sisters, Linda and Kathy Hensley; and brothers, Vernoy and Dallas Hensley.

Survivors are her four children, Tony Roark and wife, Nancy, Connie DeBusk and husband, Frank, Lisa Ennis and husband, Will all of Abingdon, and Lorrie Smith and husband, Tim of Chesterfield, Virginia; sisters, Fayetta Williams and husband, Alvin of Forest Hill, Maryland, Lucille Jones and husband, Bobby of Mulberry, Florida, and Beverly Bailey and husband, Barry; brothers, Neal Hensley, Kenny Hensley and wife, Ann, Robbie Hensley and wife, Delores, and Randy Hensley and wife, Debbie all of Abingdon; eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services for Mrs. Goldie Roark will be conducted at 11:00am Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at Valley View Freewill Baptist Church (19423 Spoon Gap Road, Abingdon) with Rev. Herbert Bailey and Gary Roark officiating. Interment will follow in Valley View cemetery. Pallbearers will be Heath DeBusk, Adam Roark, T.J. Roark, Derrick Smith, Steve Miller, Derek Fitzwater, Brad Bailey, and Eric Bailey. Honorary Pallbearers will be Orville Roark, Fred Roark, McKinley Miller, Charlie Ray Miller, Barry Bailey, Mike Doss, Josh Boone, Junior Norris, Jeff Stiltner, Danny Rowe and Members of Valley View Freewill Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends at Farris Funeral Service from 7:00pm until 9:00pm Monday evening.

The family would like to especially thank, Dr. Monahan and Betty Gail, Dr. Swan, Dr. McGarry, Dr. Ty Rich, and all the people at Cancer Outreach Center for their special care.

Robert Earl Kerr

Robert Earl Kerr, 82, passed away Monday, March 31, 2008, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was born in Hellier, Kentucky, son of the late Frank Chapman Kerr and Myrta Mullins Kerr. He served in the United States Army, including two tours of duty in Korea, one in France and one in Fairbanks, Alaska. He retired as SFC E-7 from the United States Army after more than twenty years of service. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers: Gene Kerr, Jim Kerr and Bob Kerr; and by his sisters: Helen Rose, Pauline Montiel, Madge Mullins, and “Wimp” Johnson.

Mr. Kerr is survived by his wife of 56 years, Madeline Owens Kerr; his daughters: Kathy Kerr Chandler and husband Barry of Salem, VA; and Cindy Kerr Jordan and husband Cal of Hillsborough, NC; his brothers: Joe Kerr and wife Barbara of Sarasota, FL; and Frank Kerr and wife Deb of Abingdon; his sister, Sue Valletta of North Myrtle Beach, SC; two grandchildren: Robert Wesley Jordan and Regan Vaughn Chandler; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Robert Earl Kerr will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2008, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, with Hal Rose officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Wednesday night at the funeral home. A military graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2008, at Forest Hills Memory Gardens, with military rites performed by the U.S. Army Honor Guard from Ft. Lee, Virginia. Honorary pallbearers will be Barry Chandler, Cal Jordan, Robert Jordan, Joe Kerr, Frank Kerr, Bill Williams, Benny Kerr, Roger Rose, and Mike Cole. Those attending the service are invited to meet at the gravesite by 12:50 p.m. on Friday.

Canzis C. Horn Rude

Mrs. Canzis C. Horn Rude, age 85, died Sunday, June 29, 2008 at the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie, VA.

She was born on April 9, 1923 in Buchanan County, Virginia and was a daughter of the late William Vinson Horn and Susan Catherine Van Dyke Horn. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Nelly Keen, Polly Horn, Eva (Tennessee) Cantell and Charity Blankenship and her brothers, Harrison Horn, Hoover Horn, Coy Horn and Howard Horn.

Survivors include her sisters, Donie Ferrel of Meadowview, VA; Lida Godbey of Abingdon, VA and Onie Brown of Indiana; her brothers, Claude Horn of Glade Spring, VA and Jay Horn of Marvin, VA as well as several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P. M. Thursday, July 3, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Luther Bowman officiating. Burial will follow in the Esaw Riffe cemetery in Grundy, Virginia. Friends and family members will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 9:00 P. M. Wednesday at the funeral home. A song service will be held during this time.

Jacob Garland Minton

Jacob Garland Minton, age 27, passed away Thursday, January 31, 2008. A lifelong resident of Washington County, he graduated from John S. Battle High School. He attended Virginia Highlands Community College and was a senior at University of Virginia – Wise. Jacob was an avid snowboarder and a gifted guitarist. He was a member of Pleasant View United Methodist Church and attended Highlands Fellowship.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Richard Garland Minton and Martha June Minton; and his maternal grandfather, Granville Owens.

Jacob is survived by his parents, Jeffrey and Mary Minton of Abingdon; his grandmother, Mrs. Virchel Owens of Abingdon; his brother, Robbie Minton and wife Stacey; two nephews, Luke Minton and Kade Minton; one niece, Maggie Minton; and a special friend, Aimee Gendreau of Seattle, WA.

A graveside funeral service for Jacob Minton will be held at 11:00 a.m. Sunday, February 3, 2008, at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus, VA, with the Rev. Dr. Charles Starks officiating. Pallbearers will be Nick Maiden, Justin Noonkester, Scott Collins, Anthony Harless, John Calhoun and Jon Odem. There will be no formal visitation at the funeral home, but friends are welcome to visit with the family at Jacob’s parents’ home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Washington County Life Saving Crew, PO Box 65, Abingdon, VA 24212.

Brian Keith Odell

Brian Keith Odell, age 32, passed away Friday, February 22, 2008. He was born and raised in New Mexico and had moved to Virginia in 1997. He was a Christian and had attended Mt. Carmel Christian Church. He enjoyed fishing, hiking and camping, and he loved the outdoors. Brian had a very loving, kind and gentle heart. He loved his family and friends very much. He was a very special person and will be greatly missed.

Brian is survived by his wife, Monica Odell of Meadowview; his son, Jordan Brian Odell of the home; his mother, Mary Kathleen Odell of Albuquerque, NM; his father, Bill Odell of Albuquerque; four sisters: Jade Adams of Albuquerque, Laura Odell of Albuquerque, Tara Martin of Aztec, NM, and Cassandra Odell of Farmington, NM; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Brian Odell will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 2008, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Minister Jim Pence officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the funeral home prior to the service.

James Ellis Lowe

James Ellis Lowe, 78, of Austinville, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, in the Pulaski Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 7, at 11 a.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jean Layell officiating. Interment followed in the Bethany cemetery.

He was born in Carroll County, a son of the late Robert and Cora Porter. He was a member of Beulah United Methodist Church and was retired from the New Jersey Zinc Company.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Gore; and a brother, Robert Elvis Lowe.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Jo Stuart Lowe of the home; three sons, Porter Lowe of Austinville, Danny Lowe and Ronnie Lowe, both of Blacksburg; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Alma and John Blankenship of Abingdon, and Mildred and Charlie Jackson of Austinville; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Reese Funeral Home in Austinville was in charge of the arrangements.

Leece G. McBride

Leece G. McBride, 64, of Ceres, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at his home.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 20, at 2 p.m. at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Robert Bowman and Arnold Marrs officiating. Burial followed in Browns Chapel cemetery at Stoney Ridge.

Born April 10, 1935, in Tazewell, he was a son of the late Samuel Conley McBride and Cecilia Barnett McBride. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of the AARP.

He is survived by his wife, Annie Helen Marrs McBride; three daughters and sons-in-law, Juanita and Barry Bourne of Indiana, Anita McBride of the home; and Sue Ann and Jimmy Sparks of Ceres; three brothers, Clarence McBride and Henry McBride, both of Welch, W.Va., and Jack McBride of Maryland; a half sister, Lorraine Schroder of Florida; five grandchildren, Keith Bourne, Allesha Bourne, Vanessa McBride, Natasha Boyd, and Samuel Sparks; a grandchild due April 5; and a great-grandchild due March 26.

Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell was in charge of the arrangements.

Ada Inez Poole

Ada Inez Poole, 93, of Bel Air, Md., died Saturday, March 4, 2000.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 8, at 9 a.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. H.T. Atkinson officiating. Interment will be in the Comers Rock cemetery.

She was the daughter of the late Emmett S. and Mary Jane Shupe Flanagan and the widow of French C. Poole.

She was preceded in death by a son, William Poole; a brother, Austin Flanagan; and a sister, Minnie Lee Hall.

Survivors include five children, Lillian Willis of Hampton, John Poole of Conowingo, Md., Russell Poole, Douglas Poole, and Robert Poole, all of Bel Air, Md.; a sister, Marie Hawkins of Rural Retreat; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.

John E. Thompson

John E. Thompson, 83, of North Tazewell, died Monday, March 6, 2000, at Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 8, at 2 p.m. at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Bill Hankins and the Rev. David Blankenship officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens at Bluefield. Military graveside rites will be conducted by members of Barns-Beavers V.F.W. Post 7136 of Tazewell.

Born Feb. 22, 1917, in Bland County, he was a son of the late John Edward and Rachel Pauley Thompson. He was of the United Methodist faith and was employed by C&A Lumber Company of Bishop for 20 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of Barns-Beavers V.F.W. Post 7136 and the Disabled American Veterans. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary Patterson Thompson; two daughters and a son-in-law, Claudine Thompson and Chuck Parlier of Morgantown, N.C., and Tina Louise Thompson of the home; two grandsons, Lance Adam Parlier and Shane Alexander Parlier; and several nieces and nephews.

Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell is in charge of the arrangements.
