Canna Bowers Litz

Canna Bowers Litz, 90, of Rural Retreat, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998, in the Francis Marion Manor in Marion.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 15, at 11 a.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rance Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat.

She was born May 6, 1908, in Grayson County, a daughter of the late Hugh and Nancy Sexton Bowers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard B. Litz.

Survivors include two sisters, Emma Vaught of Rural Retreat, and Thelma Ratcliffe of New Market; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Fairview United Methodist Church cemetery Fund.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home.

Carnie Ramey

Carnie Ramey, 75, of West Lee Highway, Wytheville, died Sunday, Oct. 11, 1998, in the Lewis-Gale Hospital in Salem.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 15, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with Evangelist Gregory Dill officiating. Interment will be in the West End cemetery. The American Legion Post 9 will conduct military graveside rites.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and Korea and was a member of Stage Road Chapel in Wytheville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Nancy Ball Ramey.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita W. Ramey of the home; two daughters, Frances Anne Eagle of Carrollton, Texas and Regina Rose Bankston of Williamson, W.Va.; six sisters, Anna Wright of Detroit, Mich., Tina Wellman of Welch, W.Va., Lurla Daniels of Ypsilanti, Mich., Helen Hall of Viper, Ky., Loretta Mullins of Wytheville, and Nancy Louise McGuigan of New Haven, Ind.; three brothers, James Ramey of Turkey Creek, Ky., Arlie Ramey of McAndrews, Ky., and Franklin Ramey of Williamson, W.Va.; and four grandchildren, Daryle Eagle, Philip Eagle, Jason Bankston and Adam Bankston.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

The Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.

Louis Andrew Vipperman

Louis Andrew Vipperman, 72, of Rural Retreat, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, in the Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 15, at 2 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Stephen Tilley, the Rev. Thomas Bunting and the Rev. Bob Neese officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat with Marion V.F.W. Post 4667 conducting graveside military rites.

He was born in Atkins, a son of the late Andrew Jackson and Eva Mary Schneider Vipperman. He attended the Mt. View Church of God in Saltville, was a veteran of the U.S. Army of World War II, and an honorary member of the Rural Retreat Volunteer Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife, Rachel Overbay Vipperman of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Eva Vipperman of Rural Retreat; two grandchildren, Mary Ann Vipperman of Rural Retreat and Pvt. Jason Vipperman, U.S. Army, of Ft. Sill, Okla.; four sisters, Luella Authenrieth of Rural Retreat, Ruby Cook and Myrtle Cook, both of Bel Air, Md., and Virgie Whitley of Have De Grace, Md.; one brother, Clerance William Vipperman of Dalzell, S.C.; a sister-in-law, Viola Overbay of Atkins; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Volunteer Fire Department or the Rural Retreat Emergency Services.

The family will receive friend Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel or at the residence at any time.

Kathleen Davis

Kathleen Davis, 91, of Atkins, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 28, at 1 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Joe Shumate and Pastor Ed Schaack officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat.

She was born in Atkins, a daughter of the late George S. and Grace Repass Davis. She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Rural Retreat.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Davis and Fred Davis; and two sisters, Maxine Davis and Ella Davis Selvage.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Hildred Keyes Davis of Atkins; five nieces and one nephew; several cousins; and special friends and neighbors, Ailene and Bill Buck of Atkins.

The family will receive friends Monday from noon to 1 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home before the service.

James Carl Anders

James Carl Anders, 73, of Rural Retreat, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 6, at 3:30 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Thomas J. Bunting officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat with Marion V.F.W. Post No. 4667 conducting graveside military rites.

He was born in Smyth County, a son of the late William Glenn and Nannie Mary Pierce Anders. He was a veteran of World War II having served with the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. He was a farmer by trade all his life and was a superintendent, Sunday school teacher and trustee at the First Church of God of Groseclose for several years.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Ilene Bise Anders of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Joy Anders and Daniel E. Ceary of Maryland; one son and daughter-in-law, Carl Randolph and Diana G. Anders of Rural Retreat; one granddaughter, Christina Ceary; six grandsons and a spouse, Timothy L. and Michelle C. Anders, Randall W. Anders, Ryan C. Anders, Micah Ceary, Philip Ceary, and Ben Ceary; one sister, Mary Anders Hambline of Harrisonburg; and two brothers, William G. Anders Jr. and Charles Anders, both of Marion.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Emergency Services or to the Rural Retreat Volunteer Fire Department.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Dec. 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home or at the residence at any time.

Alice Faye Rhodes McDonald

Alice Faye Rhodes McDonald, 51, of Route 2, Wytheville, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

A memorial service was held Thursday, Dec. 3, at 4 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Leonard Davis.

She is survived by her husband, Billy McDonald of the home; three daughters, Mary Grace Brownlee of Jackson, Ga., Rachel Leigh Cox of Rural Retreat, and Helen Kasey McDonald of Wytheville; two sons, Daniel Woodson Cox and David H. Cox Jr., both of Wytheville; her mother, Mary Lou Rhodes of Jackson, Ga.; one brother, Alchron J. Rhodes Jr. of Loganville, Ga.; and six grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mildred Simms

Mildred "Myd" Simms of Tampa, Fla., died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at her residence.

A graveside service will be held Monday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m. in the West End cemetery, Wytheville, with the Rev. Leland F. Smith of St. John's Episcopal Church officiating.

A native of Rural Retreat, she had been a resident of Tampa, Fla. since 1926. She was a retired teacher of the Hillsborough High School in Tampa, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald W. Simms; and her parents, Georgia Kate Staley and Edward E. Buck.

Survivors include several cousins including, A.P. Hammond Jr. of Roanoke, Marguerite B. Keatley of Cumberland, Md., Frances B. Barnett of Wytheville, and Virginia DuRand of St. Paul, Minn.

Barnett's Funeral Home in Marion is in charge of the local arrangements.

Bara Milgrim Christian

Bara Milgrim Christian, 85, of Wytheville, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 10 a.m. in the Grubb Funeral Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Jack Martin.

She was the widow of Kenneth Christian.

She is survived by two nieces, Betty Foster of Wytheville, and Evelyn Robertson of Richmond; and several other nieces and nephews.

Phillip F. Hubble

Phillip F. Hubble, 52, of Jacksonville, Fla., died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, in a Jacksonville hospital.

Funeral services and burial will be held at the Arlington Park cemetery and Funeral Home in Jacksonville, Fla.

He was born in Pearisburg, but was raised in Rural Retreat by his grandfather, the late Carl T. Hubble, and an aunt, Verna H. Henley. He was a professional truck driver for the Winn-Dixie Corporation.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frank W. Hubble.

He is survived by his wife, Roxie C. Hubble of Jacksonville, Fla.; four step-children; his mother, Marie M. Hubble of Roanoke; one sister, Pam Hall of Max Meadows; two aunts, Evelyn H. Lundy, and Verna H. Henley, both of Rural Retreat; and a special cousin, Beverly Wynn of Rural Retreat.

Arlington Park cemetery and Funeral Home in Jacksonville, Fla. is in charge of the arrangements.

John Crockett Mustard

John Crockett Mustard, 86, of Pearisburg, died Friday, Oct. 30, 1998, in Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m. in the Givens Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Charles Lockerby officiating. Interment followed at 3:30 p.m. in the Scottsville cemetery, Scottsville.

He was born in Mechanicsburg, on July 21, 1912, was a son of the late John C. Mustard Sr. and Effie Wagner Mustard. He was a member of the Pearisburg First United Methodist Church, a veteran of World War II and served in 717 Tank Battalion of the U.S. Army. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and was stationed at Danville, Gordonsville and Camp Pickett. He was a member of the American Legion and was a member of the Monroe Lodge No. 301 A.F.&A.M., Appomattox.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Duncan Mustard.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Nina Mustard of Williamsburg; four brothers, Wayne Mustard of Bland County, Jacob "Jake" Mustard of Bland County, Albert Mustard of Emporia, and Kermit Mustard of Pulaski; one sister, Josephine Stowers of Bland County; two grandchildren, Stacey Mustard, and Melissa Mustard, both of Chapel Hill, N.C.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Music Fund at Pearisburg First United Methodist Church, 1101 Valley View Dr., Pearisburg, VA 24134.

Givens Funeral Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

Farrest N. Parks

Farrest N. Parks, 73, of Gambrills, Md., formerly of Rural Retreat, died Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, in the Ann Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Md.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with Harvey Gates officiating. Interment followed in the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Hurley and Willie Mae Fulton Riggins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Leonard Parks.

Survivors include two daughters, Rebecca Schreffler of Gambrills, Md., and Rachel Hickerson of the home; one son, James Garland Parks of Easton, Md.; one sister, Opal Hubble of Rural Retreat; five grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
