Sally Sanders Fisher

Sally Sanders Fisher, 89, of Rural Retreat, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 4, at 1:30 p.m. at the Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Billingsley officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

She was born in Tazewell County, a daughter of the late Harve and Mary Compton Sanders. She had been a long-time member of the Asbury United Methodist Church and the Cedar Springs community.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Dale Fisher; her sisters, Ethel S. Cochran and Bannie S. Gill; and a brother, John Sanders.

Survivors include several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Lindsey Funeral Home in Rural Retreat was in charge of the arrangements.

Carl Cecil Halsey Jr.

Carl Cecil Halsey Jr., 59, of Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Wytheville, died Dec. 3, 1998, at his residence.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 9, at 2 p.m. in the St. Luke Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the St. Luke Lutheran Church cemetery.

He was a son of the late Carl C. and Florence Davis Halsey. He was a retired U.S. Navy veteran with 21 years of service, and was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by a son, Richard Reed Halsey; and his wife, Bonnie June Halsey.

Survivors include one daughter, Sherry Halsey of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sons and daughter-in-law, Carl David and Debbie Halsey of Newport, N.C., and Samuel Halsey of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Gladys and Frank Alvis of Hillsville, and Helen and Basil Gordon of Wytheville; one brother, James Halsey of Clinton, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Grace Halsey of Newport, N.C., and Dewayne and April Halsey of Jacksonville, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 9, at St. Luke Lutheran Church after the service.

Memorials may be made to the St. Luke cemetery fund.

Mary Ellen Morehead

Mary Ellen Morehead, 75, of Bland, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec. 31, at 1 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in White Gate with the Rev. Wayne Monroe officiating. A graveside service was held at Shiloh United Methodist cemetery immediately following the funeral services.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew D. Morehead; three brothers, Hubert Wolfe, Junior Wolfe and Kelly Wolfe; and one sister, Edith Yonce.

Survivors include one daughter and her friend, Karen Dillow of Dublin, and Blake Thompson; two grandsons and a granddaughter-in-law, Lee Dillow of Wytheville, and Brook and B.J. Dillow of Bland; and three sisters, Alice Beamer of Richmond, Mabel Beamer of Salem, and Hazel Brunk of Little Creek.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to the Bland County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 10, Bastian, VA 24314.

A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home in White Gate was in charge of the arrangements.

Michael Dean Neel

Michael Dean Neel, 36, of Dublin, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at his residence.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 4, at 2 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Moye and the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Interment followed in the Red Oak cemetery, Ceres.

He was an employee of the Pulaski Furniture Company.

He was preceded in death by his father, Larry Dean Neel; and a sister Tammy Lynn Neel.

Survivors include his mother, Freda Duncan Neel of Dublin; a son, Evan M. Neel of Dublin; two sisters, Rebecca N. Gilbert of Belspring, and Robin N. Tolbert of Kingsport, Tenn.; and a special friend, Mellissa Milton of Christiansburg.

Newberry Funeral Home in Bland was in charge of the arrangements.

Alma Nunn Silcox

Alma Nunn Silcox, 96, of Pulaski, died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, in Highland Manor Nursing Home.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 4, at Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Terrie L. Sternberg officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood cemetery.

Born Sept. 18, 1902, in Pulaski, she was the daughter of the late James Riley and Lucinda Moore Nunn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Edison Silcox; and a son, Thomas Edison Silcox.

Survivors include two sons, Harry Silcox of Burlington, N.C., and Richard David Silcox of Percival, Iowa; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home in Pulaski was in charge of the arrangements.

Victor Elmo Smith

Victor Elmo Smith, 87, of Roanoke, died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, in a local hospital.

Funeral services in Roanoke will be held Thursday, Jan. 7, at 11 a.m. at the Oakey's North Chapel with Dr. Charles G. Fuller and the Rev. Charles Ward officiating. Funeral services in Wythe County will be Thursday, Jan. 7, at 2 p.m. at the Mountain View United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tommy Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in the Smith Family cemetery, near the church in the Crockett's Cove section of Wythe County.

He was retired from Roanoke City Mills as the farm store manager. He enjoyed the outdoors, farming, hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ottie Kirby Smith.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jack D. and Joyce Smith, and Ralph K. Smith, all of Roanoke; and five grandchildren and spouses, Victor K. and Michelle Smith of Chamblissburg, David K. Smith of Roanoke, Kimberly Smith and Steve Slaubaugh of Roanoke, Stan D. Smith of Washington D.C., and Taylor R. Smith of Roanoke.

Oakey's North Chapel in Roanoke is in charge of the arrangements.

Russell H. Steffey

Russell H. Steffey, 90, of Wytheville, died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, in the Birdmont Nursing Home.

A graveside service was held Monday, Jan. 4, at 11 a.m. at the Mt. Ephraim United Methodist Church cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Charles Burnett officiating.

She was born in Russell County, the daughter of the late William and Eliza Garrett Harmon. She was a graduate of Lebanon High School and Bristol Nursing School and was a retired registered nurse. She was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Kent Neal Ager; and her second husband, Floyd Erastus Steffey.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the St. Paul United Methodist Church, 330 Church Street, Wytheville, VA 24382, or the Mt. Ephriam United Methodist Church, Crockett, VA 24323.

Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.

Charlie Thompson

Charlie "Toad" Thompson, 69, of Bastian, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 7, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating.

He was a retired construction worker and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He is survived by one sister, Alma Thompson of Bastian; two brothers, Shuler Thompson of Bland, and Eugene Thompson of Bastian; several nieces, nephews and great-nieces, and great-nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Jan. 7, from 11 a.m. until service time at the Grubb Funeral Home.

George Boone Vaughan Jr.

George Boone Vaughan Jr., 78, of Wytheville, died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999 in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 6, at 3 p.m. at the Wytheville Church of Christ.

He was a member of the Wytheville Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Velma Gregory Vaughan of Wytheville; three stepdaughters, Carolyn Edwards of Salem, Sharon Ferrell of Roanoke, and Martha Frances Fields of Danville; two sisters-in-law, Thelma Lindsey of Pulaski, and Edith Crigger of Dublin; two brothers-in-law, Collin Gregory of Salem, and Clayton Gregory of Pulaski; and three stepgrandchildren.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home but friends may call at the residence at 625 North 6th St. at anytime.

Gillman Funeral Chapel in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.

Nellie Mae Elizabeth Viars

Nellie Mae Elizabeth Viars, 75, of Barren Springs, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, at the residence of her daughter.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 6, at 2 p.m. at the Barren Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Don Frazier officiating. Interment will follow in the Viars Family cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Jesse and Maggie Viars Gravley and was a member of the Barren Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Acie Viars.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Bobby Garwood, and Irma and Curtis Peak, all of Route 1, Draper; four sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Linda Viars, Richard and Christine Viars, Dennis and Nancy Viars, and Douglas and Charlotte Viars, all of Barren Springs; two sisters, Katherine Powell of Greenville, Tenn., and Lucille Bond of Sylvatus; three brothers, Jesse "Baker" Gravely and Kerney Gravely, both of Galax, and Lathern Gravely of Dublin; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Reese Funeral Home in Austinville is in charge of the arrangements.

William Jackson Waller

William Jackson "Jack" Waller, 66, of Marion, died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 4, at 11 a.m. at the Marion Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Bobby Dunford and the Rev. Roger Cregger officiating. Burial followed in West End cemetery in Wytheville.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Owens and Virginia Waller; one brother, Bernard Waller; and one sister, Georgia Hanks.

Survivors include his wife, Mable Waller; one son, Gregory Jackson Waller of the home; two stepsons, Billy Delp of Marion, and Joe Delp of Bristol, Tenn.; one stepdaughter, Barbara Shepherd of Troutdale; five sisters, Ailene Jackson of Pulaski, Susie Dunford of Rural Retreat, Dorothy Gravely of Wytheville, Paige Alderman of Wytheville, and Thelma Davis of Ivanhoe; four granddaughters, three grandsons, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Barnett's Funeral Home in Marion was in charge of the arrangements.

Mawyer L. Willis

Mawyer L. Willis, 98, of Speedwell, died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 6, at 2 p.m. in the Rosenbaum Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. H.T. and Betty Atkins officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

He was retired from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helena Hale Willis; a son and daughter-in-law, Curtis and Margaret Willis; and a granddaughter, Nancy.

Survivors include one daughter, Norma Jean Willis of Speedwell; two sons and daughters-in-law, Storal Bates and Henrietta Willis, and Fred and Lillian Willis, all of Hampton; one sister, Louise Leska of Gathersburg, Md.; two brothers, Elmer Willis of Laytonsville, Md., and Stover Willis of Dayton, Ohio; a special person, Gregory Hale of Speedwell; eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
