Calvin Olcott Turpin

Calvin Olcott Turpin, 61, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m. at the Wytheville Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Michael Wingard and the Rev. Dr. Thomas Sproule officiating. Interment followed in the East End cemetery.

He was born in Wytheville, a son of the late James Robert and Gladys Browning Turpin. He was a former employee of Farris Brothers' Dairy in Newbern and was currently employed by the Wythe County School System. He was a member of the Wytheville Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Bob Turpin.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Eddie Brewer of Wytheville, Hope and Chris Alderman of Crockett, and Kirstie and Michael Smith of Wytheville; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Jeff Turpin of Wytheville, and Barry and Tina Turpin of Marion; two sisters, Kay Turpin Smith and Ellen Turpin Munger, both of Roanoke; one brother, Charles B. Turpin of Knoxville, Tenn.; and eight grandchildren.

Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.

James Rufus Cooper

James Rufus Cooper, 83, of Elkton, Md., died Sunday, May 23, 1999, at home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 27, at 2 p.m. at Crouch Funeral Home in North East, Md., with the Rev. Dr. Stephen D. Hokuf, pastor of First Baptist Church of North East. Interment will be in the North East Methodist cemetery in North East, Md.

He was born Aug. 13, 1915, in Crockett a son of the late Franklin and Fannie Miller Cooper. He was a resident of Cecile County, Md., for 34 years. He was an electrician and lineman and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for 50 years, and the IBEW Union Local 70 in Washington, D.C., for 40 years. He was a member of the West End United Methodist Church and the Fraternal Lodge #82 for 49 years, both in Wytheville. He was also an avid gardener and collector.

He was preceded in death by two siblings, Charlie Cooper and Elsie Cooper.

Survivors include his wife, Katie Davidson Cooper of Elkton, Md.; two daughters, Shirley Hoffman of Henderson, Nev., and Peggy C. Johnson of Colora, Md.; three grandchildren, Jeff Kirk of Reston, Julie Kirk Atkinson of Perryman, Md., and Jim Hoffman of Kissimmee, Fla.; one sister, Carrie Scott of Roanoke; two brothers, Clark Cooper of Crockett, and William Cooper of Wytheville; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Crouch Funeral Home.

Rupert Crockett

Rupert Crockett, 85, of Austinville, died Saturday, May 22, 1999, at home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 27, at 10 a.m. at the Zion Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church, Austinville, with the Rev. Eugene Crockett officiating. The body will be taken to the church two hours before service time.

He was born Sept. 5, 1913, a son of the late Rev. Charlie and Jeannie Crockett.

He was preceded in death by his son, Rupert Crockett Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Beatrice V. Crockett; a son and daughter-in-law, Claude H. and Margaret Shabazz of Radford; a daughter and son-in-law, Delores C. and Max Snell of Christiansburg; 11 grandchildren and their spouses, Ronald E. Snell, Max A. Snell Jr. of Christiansburg, Brenda T. and Andre Motley of Christiansburg, Steven A. Snell of Huntington, W.Va., Donald W. and Debbie Snell of Christiansburg, Donna Manns of Radford, Diane C. Shabazz of Virginia Beach, Michelle S. and Dennis Shultz of New Jersey, Millicent and Patrick Mills of Virginia Beach, Callie C. Smith of Charlotte, N.C., and Tyrone Crockett of Los Angles, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Madelyn Williams of Detroit, Mich.; 17 great-grandchildren; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Ella Mae Williams of Washington, D.C., Agnes Eades of Wytheville, Mable and Frank Nelson of Austinville, and Shirley Watkins of Washington, D.C.; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Sherman and Vera Crockett of Austinville, Albert and Bessie Crockett of Max Meadows, Eugene and Mable Crockett of Austinville, and Archie Ray Crockett of Washington, D.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 26, from 7 to 8 p.m. at Claytor Dean Funeral Home at 2000 West St., Radford.

Betty June Dalton Draughn

Betty June Dalton Draughn, 61, of Wytheville, died Sunday, May 23, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, May 26, at 1 p.m. in the West End cemetery.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Teresa Dalton of Wytheville; a grandson, Kevin Dalton of Wytheville; an aunt, Maude Johnson; a cousin, Margie Blair; and two special friends, Jimmy BeCraft and Wayne Gilman.

Gillman Funeral Chapel in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.

Helen Elizabeth Martin Jowers

Helen Elizabeth Martin Jowers, 79, of Wytheville, died Friday, May 21, 1999, in Edgemont Center.

Funeral services were held Sunday, May 23, at 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Michael Wingard officiating. Graveside service was held Monday, May 24, at 11 a.m. at the West End cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Fred Painter Martin and Maude Belle Johnson Martin. She was a member of the Wytheville Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Glen Jowers Sr.; and a son, William G. "Bill" Jowers Jr.

Survivors include one sister, Edna Lena Hutton of Greensboro, N.C.; one brother and sister-in-law, William Jasper and Mary Hays Martin of Knoxville, Tenn.; a special friend and cousin, Charles Watts of Wytheville.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Wythe County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 389, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Angela Nester Payne

Angela "Angie" Nester Payne, 39, of Barren Springs, died Saturday, May 22, 1999.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 26, at 2 p.m. at the Barren Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Kent Lewis and the Rev. Don Frazier officiating. Interment will follow in the Sutphin cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

She was employed by Volvo North America.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Myra and Adam Edwards of Route 2, Max Meadows; her parents, Malcolm and Shirley O. Nester of Barren Springs; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Charlotte "Pam" and Rufus Cloud of Cana, and Sabrena and Gary Rorrer of Draper; two nieces, Alysen Rorrer, and Sarah Rorrer; and one nephew, Avery Nester.

Walter Wayne Payne

Walter Wayne Payne, 44, of Barren Springs, died Saturday, May 22, 1999.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 26, at 11 a.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rick Lindamood and the Rev. Ronnie Stuart officiating. Interment will follow in the Charity cemetery.

He was employed by AMSCO.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Myra and Adam Edwards of Route 2, Max Meadows; his parents, Walter H. and Marie P. Payne of Route 2, Max Meadows; one brother and sister-in-law, Dennis D. and Janet L. Payne of Route 2, Max Meadows; one niece, Andrea Lynn Stone of Pulaski; one nephew, Darren C. Stone of Barren Springs; a special friend, Gene Cornett of Wytheville; and several aunts and uncles.

Rufus Eugene Phillips

Rufus Eugene "Gene" Phillips, 68, of Hillsville, died Sunday, May 23, 1999, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 27, at 2 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel in Austinville with the Rev. Clayton Quesenberry and the Rev. Audie Arnold officiating. Interment will follow in the Phillips Family cemetery.

He was born in Carroll County, a son of the late Rufus Roy and Sadie Mae Coleman Phillips.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Velva Dalton and Margie York.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Mae Phillips of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and Scott Johnson of Hillsville; four sons and daughters-in-law, Clifton E. Phillips of Hillsville, Garnett L. Phillips of Radford, David L. and Lisa Phillips of Hiwassee, and Terry and Glenna Phillips of Austinville; six grandchildren, Clifton B. Phillips, Angela E. Phillips, Michael Phillips, Jessica Phillips, Lauren Phillips and Matthew Phillips; two great-grandchildren, Kevin B. Phillips, and Jared Phillips; six sisters, Violet Hughes of Richmond, Lois Sharp of Austinville, Norma Semones of Hillsville, Alma Riggins of Austinville, Emma Riggins of Galax, and Merline Davis of Hillsville; and a brother, Haswell Phillips of Richmond.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home or at the residence at any time.

James Phillip Tickle Sr.

James Phillip "Phip" Tickle Sr., 83, of Graham Road, Draper, died Monday, May 24, 1999, at his home.

Funeral service will be held Thursday, May 27, at 11 a.m. from the Draper's Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Wilfred Overton officiating. Burial will follow in the Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church cemetery.

He was born in Dublin on May 15, 1916, and was the son of the late George Shannon and Bertie Mae Cassell Tickle. He was a retired employee of Klopman Mills, Newbern, with 29 years of service. He was a member of the Draper's Valley Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ruby Windle Tickle of Draper; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Bessie Tickle of Draper, Jerry and Linda Tickle of Morris, Minn., and Johnny and Ruby Tickle of Draper; a brother and sister-in-law, Hubert and Fleeta Tickle of Dublin; grandchildren and their spouses, Chris and Lynne Tickle of Richmond, Jeff and Kelly DeWitt of Greenville, S.C., Lee and Daphne LaFleur of Draper, Derek and Kim Tickle of Pulaski, Jeff Tickle, Julie Tickle, and Bethany Tickle, all Morris, Minn.; great-grandchildren, Phillip and Pierce Tickle of Richmond, and Kayla and Matthew DeWitt of Greenville, S.C.; and grandchildren by devotion, Jennifer and Angela Hill, Joey and Bradley Rigney, and Ryan McCollum.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Draper's Valley Baptist Church.

Imogene Martin Rickey

Imogene Martin Rickey, 69, of Wytheville, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at her residence.

Graveside services will be held Sunday, Jan. 24, at 2 p.m. in the East End cemetery with the Rev. Robert Hudler officiating.

She was a daughter of the late Joseph and Emma Martin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel J. Rickey; and four sisters.

Survivors include two sisters and four brothers-in-law, Bee Cook of Princeton, W.Va., Gertrude "Trudy" and Garland "Mosey" Hale of Speedwell, Ed Fuller of Weirsdale, Fla., Alton R. Paisley of Piney Creek, N.C., and Clarence Coleman of Christiansburg; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home but friends may call at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Gertrude and Garland Hale in Speedwell at anytime.

Alice Lucille Ward

Alice Lucille Ward, 81, of Wytheville, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Leonard Davis officiating. Interment will follow in the Oakwood cemetery.

She was born in Wytheville, a daughter of the late John and Dora Thompson Stepteau.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick Ward; and a brother, Harrison Stepteau.

Survivors include a sister, Virginia Jones of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Monday, Jan. 25, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

R.B. Blankenship Jr.

R.B. Blankenship Jr., 66, of Wytheville, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 1997, in a Roanoke hospital.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Jan. 19, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home conducted by Pastor Amy Oehlschlaeger. Interment will be in the St. Luke Lutheran Church cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his parents, R.B. "Brown" and Edith Davis Blankenship.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley D. Blankenship of Wytheville; a daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Eddie Richardson of Wytheville; a son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Bobbi Blankenship of Wytheville; a sister, Mary Ann Brown of Radford; a brother, Donnie Blankenship of Fairfax; a granddaughter, Tasha Nicola Blankenship; and four step-grandchildren, Jessica Reffitt, Ricci Reffitt, Carly Robinson, and Kate Robinson.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.
