Conway Howard Smith

Conway Howard Smith, 89, formerly of Pulaski, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 1997, in St. Louis, Mo.

Graveside services were held Friday, Jan. 24, at 11 a.m. at Oakwood cemetery, Pulaski, with the Rev. Steven R. Emory officiating.

Born Dec. 19, 1907, in Pulaski, he was the son of the late Lewis Edward and Eva Howard Smith. He owned and operated B.D. Smith Brothers, a Pulaski print shop, for 45 years. He was an author, writing three books about Pulaski County. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy in Okinawa, Japan. He was a Mason for 67 years.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Williams Smith of St. Louis, Mo.; and one daughter and son-in-law, Rosemary and Michael Wicks of St. Louis, Mo.

Thomas M. Seagle and Sons Funeral Home, Pulaski, was in charge of arrangements.

Sara Louise Watson

Sara Louise Watson, 78, of Richmond and formerly of Wytheville, died Friday, Jan. 24, 1997.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in the West End cemetery.

Born in Maryville, Tenn., she spent her early childhood in Winston-Salem, N.C. until moving to Wytheville. Married on Dec. 7, 1941, she was a member of the Wytheville Baptist Church, and served as dietitian and manager of the Scott Memorial School in Wytheville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Troy A. Watson Sr.; a sister, Elizabeth Udell; and three brothers, James Spraker, Oren Spraker, and Watson Spraker, all of Wytheville.

Survivors include six children, Janet W. Grimes, Troy A. Watson Jr., both of Richmond, Carol W. Rawls of Laurel, Md., Gary L. Watson of Scarborough, Me., Vicki W. Kensky of Tampa, Fla., and David L. Watson of Mooresville, N.C.; one brother, Robert F. Spraker Sr. of Wytheville; 13 grandchildren, Kimberly and Patrick Rawls, Brian Becraft, Amy Pigford, Emily Grimes, Adam and Lesley Watson, Alison and Jessica Watson, Nicholas, Lindsay, Ashley, and Michael Watson; and 10 nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 25, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the local chapter of the American Lung Association.

The Grubb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Eva Virginia Armbrister

Eva Virginia Armbrister, 88, of Wytheville, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 1997, in the Kegley Manor Nursing Home.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 11 a.m. at the West End cemetery.

She is survived by a niece and nephew-in-law, Bonnie Armbrister and Dann C. Miller of Grafton, Ohio; a great-nephew, Jerry Miller of North Ridgeville, Ohio; and two great-great-nieces.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

Gillman Funeral Chapel in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.

Geneva Bishop

Geneva Bishop, 89, of Rocky Mount, formerly of Ivanhoe, died Friday, Jan. 17, 1997, in the Franklin Memorial Hospital.

Graveside memorial services were held Monday, Jan. 27, at 1 p.m. at the West End cemetery with the Rev. Jerry Long officiating.

She was born in Ivanhoe, the daughter of the late Dr. James J. and Nannie Morgan Bishop.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jerry J. Bishop and Landon E. Bishop.

Survivors include two nephews, Dr. John M. Bishop of Raleigh, N.C., and John Lopez of Atlanta, Ga.; and a cousin, John H. Morgan III of Ivanhoe.

Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.

Nettie Wohlford Catron

Nettie Wohlford Catron, 94, of Wytheville, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 2 p.m. at the West End cemetery, Wytheville.

She was born in Crockett. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church since 1916, a teacher for the Wythe County Public Schools from 1922 until 1935, and also was a retired civil service worker for the Norfolk Naval Supply Center in 1970 with 30 years service.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Clarence Catron; and her parents, James Cloyd and Mollie Miller Wohlford; a sister, Ella May W. Grubb; two brothers, George Wohlford and William C. "Jaybird" Wohlford.

Survivors include three sisters-in-law, Beulah L. Wohlford of Barco, N.C., Vivian K. Catron, and Emma H. Umberger, both of Wytheville; five nieces, Helen C. Wilson of Wytheville, Doris W. Sawyers and Betty W. Loomis of Barco, N.C., Paige B. Omohendro of Huntington, W.Va., and Lena Faye C. Crockett of Cripple Creek; eight nephews, Dewey W. Catron of Wytheville, William "Bill" Wohlford, Jack Grubb, both of Roanoke, Rodney N. Catron of Virginia Beach, Charles C. Catron of Salem, Darrell NB. Catron of Monroe, N.C., Walter Graham BeCraft of Elk Creek, and William "Buster" Catron of Wytheville; a special grand-niece, Teresa C. Peters of Chesapeake; special grand-nephew, William Sawyers of Barco, N.C.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Wythe County Rescue or the Rural Rescue squads.

Alma Nell Henderlite Crawford

Alma Nell Henderlite Crawford, 80, of Rural Retreat, died Monday, Jan. 27, 1997, in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 1 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Countiss and the Rev. Ray Haskett officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat.

She was born in Atkins, a daughter of the late William F. and Nellie Cora Musser Henderlite Sr. She was a member of the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church and owner-operator of the Econo-wash Laundromat in Rural Retreat.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Franklin Crawford.

Survivors include two sisters, Thelma Harden of Wytheville, and Blanche Gouge of Bakersville, N.C.; a special great-nephew and wife, Skipper and Stephanie Patton of Rural Retreat; and several other nieces, nephews, other great-nieces and nephews.

The family requests that those who prefer, may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Emergency Services.

James Sterling Dunford

James Sterling Dunford, 83, of Route 3, Max Meadows, the Gunton Park community, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Albert Linville, the Rev. George Freeman and the Rev. William Littreal officiating. Interment will follow in the Jones cemetery in Gunton Park.

He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Jim and Nebrada Wright Dunford.

He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Robert Dunford.

Survivors include his wife, Bertha E. Dunford of the home; four daughters and sons-in-law, Mildred and Bill Edwards, Wanda and Johnny Smith, all of Archdale, N.C., Janice Rogers of Pulaski, and Minnie and Ricky Freeman of Max Meadows; five sons and daughters-in-law, Lee Roy and Minnie Jane Dunford of Route 3, Wytheville, Thomas and Loretta Dunford of Cripple Creek, James Buford and Brenda Dunford of Max Meadows, Ronnie and Trish Dunford of Trinity, N.C. and Gary Dunford of Pulaski; two sisters, Ethel Mae Moore of Stockton, Calif., and Edna Gillespie of Natural Bridge; and 20 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

Roy Lawrence Hancock

Roy Lawrence Hancock, 60, of Bland, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 1997, in Radford Community Hospital, Radford.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 27, at 1 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with the Rev. Steve Dawson officiating. Burial was in the Sifford cemetery in Parrott.

He was born Jan. 29, 1936, at Radford, a son of the late Robert Cecil and Alma Cressell Hancock.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Hancock; and two brothers, Robert Louis Hancock and Edward Hancock.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Tanya Hancock of Bland; seven sisters, Catherine Cox, Joyce Johnson, Peggy Treadaway, all of High Point, N.C., Edna Hyatt of Belleville, Ill., Louise McHenry, Opal Furr, and Barbara Furr, all of Trinity, N.C.; three grandchildren, Ariel Hancock, Heather Hancock, and Natasha Hancock.

A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home in White Gate was in charge of the arrangements.

Christopher Paul Harless

Christopher Paul Harless, 13, of Bastian, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 1997, in the Princeton Community Hospital.

Graveside funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 24, at 11 a.m. at the Rose Hill cemetery, Bastian, with the Rev. David Wall officiating.

He was born June 13, 1983, at Princeton, W.Va., a son of David Wayne and Mary Childress Harless of Bastian.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Andrew Harless of Bastian; maternal grandmother, Eunice Shrader Childress of Bastian; paternal grandmother, Elsie Tabor Harless of Rocky Gap; and several uncles, aunts and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations to be made to the Christopher Paul Harless Trust Fund, c/o First Virginia Bank-Southwest, Bland, Va. 24315 for the purchase of equipment for handicapped children.

Clyde C. Lambert

Clyde C. Lambert, 72, of El Paso, Texas, formerly of Wytheville, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 1997, in an El Paso, Texas hospital.

Graveside funeral services will be held at the Fort Bliss National cemetery at Fort Bliss Army Base in El Paso, Texas.

He was the son of the late Robert L. and Fannie Terry Lambert of Wytheville. He retired from El Paso Natural Gas Co. after 20 years of service. He served in the United States Air Force during World War II, Korean Conflict, and Vietnam War. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a resident of El Paso, Texas, for 25 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances; and a grandson, Michael.

Survivors include two daughters, Frances Ellen Quinn of El Paso, Texas, and Joann Mauermann of Belvera, Germany; one son, Robert "Bobby" C. Lambert of Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, Estel Lambert of Zellwood, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

Kaster-Maxon & Futrell Funeral Home in Texas is in charge of the services.

Cihmer Morgan Collins

Cihmer Morgan Collins, 68, of Barren Springs, Va., died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, in the Pulaski Community Hospital, Pulaski, Va.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Jan. 27, at 1 p.m. at the Barren Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Don Frazier officiating. Interment will follow in the Foster Falls cemetery. Grover King Post No. 1115 V.F.W. will conduct graveside military rites.

He was born in Wythe County, Va., a son of the late David Graham Collins and Ferrill Elizabeth Morgan Collins. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force with 22 years service and he had Strategic Air Command training with the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division. He is a retired sergeant with the Wythe County Sheriff's Department with 14 years service. He was a member of the Barren Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church and Grover King Post No. 1115, V.F.W.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley McPeak Collins of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Deborah Collins Pike, and Donna and Billy Ogle, all of Hillsville, Va.; three grandchildren, Amy Pike Hancock of Wytheville, Va., Joshua Ogle, and Jacob Ogle, both of Hillsville, Va.; two great-grandchildren, Zachary Curtis Hancock, and Thomas Morgan Hancock; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty and Harry Seagle, Dorothy Rose, Mary and John Burcham, and June Morgan, all of Wytheville, Va.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, David Keith and Alma Collins of Wytheville, Va., the Rev. Richard and Peggy Collins of Max Meadows, Va., and Samuel and Geri Collins of Wytheville, Va.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home or at the residence at any time.
