Ada Virginia Wyatt Mize

Ada Virginia Wyatt Mize, 90, of Wytheville, Va., died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville, Va. Interment will follow in the Groseclose Chapel cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, Va., and was a member of the Carmi Baptist Camp.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob W. "Jake" Mize; her parents, Sidney and Rosa Jane Snow Wyatt; and two children, Robert Lewis Mize and Dennis Ray Mize.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis E. and James Viars, Sylvia Kaye and Larry Viars, all of Max Meadows, Va., and Tammy Lynn Gravley of Wytheville, Va.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Olin Rex Mize of Grahams Forge, Va., J.C. Mize of Blacksburg, Va., Donald D. and Rosemary Mize of Greenville, S.C., and Richard Dale and Karen Mize of Stony Fork, Va.; 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one step-great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

Joseph Lawrence Pickett

Joseph Lawrence Pickett, 92, of Ivanhoe, Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002.

Reese Funeral Home in Austinville, Va., is in charge of the arrangements.

Paul William Doss Sr.

Paul William Doss Sr., 87, of Louisa, Va., died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at the home of his son, Paul Doss, in Gloucester, Va.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, July 24, at 11 a.m. in Signal Hill Memorial Park, Hanover, Va.

He was a native of Simmons, W.Va. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and had worked in the mining industry for over 40 years and retired from Warren Brothers Construction.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Minnie Coffey Doss; and a daughter, Betty Louise Ogle of Flint, Mich. Survivors include his wife, Amanda Louise Doss; three sons, Paul William Doss of Gloucester, Va., James Carson Doss of Carolina County, Va., and Melvin Randall Doss Sr. of Chesterfield, Va.; two brothers, Maynard Doss of Christiansburg, Va., and Willard Doss of Roanoke, Va.; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, July 23, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Andrews Funeral Home, Gloucester, Va.

Memorial donations may be made to Riverside Walter Reed Hospice, P.O. Box 1130, Gloucester, VA 23061.

Roderick Wesley Gravely

Roderick Wesley Gravely, 33, of Max Meadows, Va., died Sunday, July 21, 2002.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 24, at 11 a.m. at the Memorial Christian Church in the Draper Valley section of Pulaski County, Va., with the Rev. Johnny Howlett officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Brenda Joyce Gravely; paternal grandparents, William Estel and Jessie "Dollie" Gravely; and maternal grandfather, Charlie T. Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Beth A. Gravely of the home; two sons, Brandon K. Gravely and Derrick Gravely, both of the home; his father, Norman Doug Gravely of Max Meadows, Va.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Lisa and Bruce Ogle of Max Meadows, Va., and Michelle and Timothy Woods of Draper, Va.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Douglas and Lora Gravely of Max Meadows, Va., and Darrell and Tina Gravely of Draper, Va.; maternal grandmother, Ersel M. Smith of Max Meadows, Va.; mother-in-law, Catherine Callahan of the home; a special friend and cousin, Nathaniel "Junior" Hughett of Max Meadows, Va.; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and close friends.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, July 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those who prefer may make donations to the his sons’ college fund in care of his wife.

Willie Mae Snowden

Willie Mae Snowden, 85, of Camden, Ohio, died Monday, July 8, 2002, at Greenbriar Nursing Center in Eaton, Ohio.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 12, at 10:30 a.m. at Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home in Eaton, Ohio, with John Wilbur and Scott Richards officiating. Burial was in Fairmount cemetery, Camden, Ohio.

She was born Nov. 21, 1916, in Levee, Ky. She was a Camden High School graduate.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Loyd and Hassie Miller Williams; her husband, Floyd Embry Snowden in December 1997; brothers, Shelby Williams and Dallas Williams.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Lehmkuhl of Rural Retreat, Va.; two sons, Gary C. Snowden of Camden, Ohio, and Kenneth A. Snowden of Huntington Beach, Calif.; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Bill Williams of Eaton, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home in Eaton, Ohio, was in charge of the arrangements.

James Austin Umberger

James Austin Umberger, 88, of Black Lick section of Wythe County, Va., died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, in Asbury Center at Birdmont in Wytheville, Va.

A graveside service will be held Sunday, Jan. 27, at 1:30 p.m. at the Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church cemetery.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, C.J. and Betty Pugh of Wytheville, Va.; two grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel.

Flowers will be appreciated but the family suggests that donations may be made to the Mt. Mitchell cemetery Fund or the Agape Food Pantry.

Ruth Colleen Semones Melton

Ruth Colleen Semones Melton, 76, Route 3, Max Meadows, the Gunton Park community, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 1997, at her residence.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Rocky Dalton officiating. Interment followed in the Jones cemetery in Gunton Park.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Harvey and Gertrude Dean Semones. She was a member of the Gunton Park Church of God of Prophecy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Gordon Melton.

Survivors include five sisters, Florence Duncan of Tarpon Springs, Fla., Jane Quesenberry, Maggie Arnold, both of Pulaski, Evelyn Martin, and Alice Tickle, both of Max Meadows; two brothers, Dale Semones of Hanover, and Charles Semones of Pulaski; a special niece, Hilda Jarrett of High Point, N.C.; special great-nephew, Sgt. Timothy Pauley of Germany; and several other nieces and nephews.

Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.

Ethel Marie Robinette

Ethel Marie Robinette, 85, of Atkins, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 1997, at Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home in Marion.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial followed in Pleasant Hill cemetery in Groseclose.

She was the widow of Glen "Ping" Robinette Sr.

She is survived by two daughters, Shelba R. Crigger of Rural Retreat, and Betty R. Brantley of Houston, Texas; one son, Curtis Robinette of Rural Retreat; two sisters, Verda Voltz of Fawn Grove, Pa., and Avis Bainbridge of Joppa, Md.; and three grandchildren, Tony Pickett of Knoxville, Tenn., Amy Robinette, and Mary Pat Robinette, both of Rural Retreat.

Seaver-Brown Funeral Services were in charge of the arrangements.

Martha Glorena Tuggle

Martha Glorena Tuggle, 69, of Rocky Gap, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 1997, in a Bluefield Hospital.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m. at the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry Ramey officiating. Burial will follow in the Tuggle cemetery in Rocky Gap.

Born in Rocky Gap, she was a daughter of the late John G. and Minnie Lambert. She was a member of the Honaker Baptist Church and retired as a cook from the Rocky Gap Combined School after over 35 years of service.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Randolph Tuggle; a son, Steven Allen Tuggle; and two brothers, Roscoe Lambert and Cecil Lambert.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Larry Wayne and Pamela Tuggle, Ronald Dale Tuggle, and John Douglas and Kelli Tuggle, all of Rocky Gap; a sister, Helen Forcione of Bethesda, Md.; two brothers, John Henry Lambert of Warsaw, Mo., and Wesley Allen Lambert of Rocky Gap; and a grandson, David Wayne Tuggle of Rocky Gap.

Mercer Funeral Home in Bluefield, W.Va. is in charge of the arrangements.

Guy C. Dunford

Guy C. Dunford, 72, of Route 3, Max Meadows, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Richard G. Lindamood. Interment will be in the Family cemetery in Gunton Park. A Masonic memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 1, at 8:30 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel.

He was a retired truck driver and farmer.

He was preceded in death by father, George Guy Dunford; a son, Jimmy N. Dunford; and a brother, G. Paul Dunford.

Survivors include his wife, June C. Dunford of Max Meadows; a daughter, Carol D. Fowler of Max Meadows; a son, G.C. Dunford of Max Meadows; a sister, Wilma D. Ward of Max Meadows; two brothers, Alan A. Dunford of Max Meadows, and Harry J. Dunford of Pulaski; his mother, Myrtle Poole Dunford of Wytheville; a special friend, Liza Collins; five grandchildren, Fred G. "Freddie" Fowler III, Robert E. "Bobby" Fowler, Jimmy N. Dunford Jr., Jacquelyn Dawn "Jackie" Armbrister, JoAnna Michele Dunford; one great-grandchild, Whitney E. Armbrister; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Feb. 1, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Grubb Funeral Home or at the home of his daughter, Carol Fowler, at any time.

Mary Katherine Frye

Mary Katherine Frye, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 1997, in the Vista Hospice in Houston, Texas.

Funeral services and entombment were held on Monday, Jan. 27, in Houston, Texas. Memorial services will be held at a later date at Flat Rock Methodist Church in Grayson County.

She was a daughter of the late Richard Guy and Ruth Fulton Frye of Cripple Creek and Ravenna, Ohio. Her grandparents were the honorable Samuel Montreville and Margaret Huddle Fulton of Independence; and Samuel Thomas and Fannie Fisher Frye of Cripple Creek. She traced direct lineage through her great-grandfather, John Earhart, to the late Amelia Earhart. Following graduation from Independence High School, she attended Berea College in Kentucky, receiving a bachelors degree in chemistry; a masters from the University of Alabama and a doctorate from the University of Texas. She began her career as a registered laboratory technician with the Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, Ohio. For a number of years, she was associated with the Atomic Energy Commission in Oak Ridge, Tenn. In 1993 she retired as senior director of the Shell research laboratories of Houston where she was employed for over 25 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, and a brother, Samuel Guy Frye of Pulaski and Independence.

Survivors include her husband, Budd C. Guin of Houston; two sisters, Margaret Fulton Frye Holmes of Rochester, N.Y., and Hallie Guiese Frye Huddle of Wythe County; two nieces, Kay Frye Gallimore of Floyd, and Rebecca Sue Huddle of Wytheville; two nephews, Robert Edward Lee Huddle III of Indian Valley, and Jeb Stuart Earhart Huddle of Wytheville; an uncle, Thomas Brown Frye of Abbs Valley; and a number of relatives and friends in both Wythe and Grayson Counties.

Lloyd W. Suthers

Lloyd W. "Jake" Suthers, 66, of Route 2, Wytheville, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 1997, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Feb. 1, at 11 a.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Dr. Charles Burnett. Interment will be in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Rural Retreat.

He was a retired farmer and was inducted into the Wythe County Sports Hall of Fame, and was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War. He was the son of the late Albert E. and Betty Williams Suthers.

He is survived by his wife, Naomi Kincer Suthers of Wytheville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Linda Suthers, Danny and Tammy Suthers, David and Lisa Suthers, all of Wytheville; one sister, Sue Reardon of Rural Retreat; five brothers, Charles S. Suthers, Earnest B. Suthers, Herman A. Suthers, Thomas R. Suthers, Harold N. Suthers, all of Wytheville; and seven grandchildren, Cliff Suthers, Tyler Suthers, Kristin Suthers, Kevin Suthers, Kenneth Suthers, Robert Suthers, and Carla Suthers.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Paul United Methodist Church or to the American Diabetes Association, Va. Affiliate, 404 8th St. N.E. Suite C., Charlottesville, Va. 22902.
