Ruth Bernard Atwell

Ruth Bernard Atwell, 86, of Crandon, died Monday, Feb. 3, 1997, in the Kegley Manor in Bastian.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 3 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home in Bland with the Rev. Joe Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in the Mechanicsburg cemetery.

She was the daughter of the late John Samuel and Eula Gordon Bernard.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Berlin Cadet Atwell; two sons; two grandchildren; and a sister.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, John and Eleanor Atwell of Bland; a sister, Louise B. Bird of Bland; a brother, Paul Bernard of Bland; and two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Newberry Funeral Home in Bland is in charge of the arrangements.

Ruth Viola Fore

Ruth Viola Fore, 101, of Wytheville died Friday, Jan. 31. 1997, in Evansham Manor.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Feb. 6, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Henry Horton. Interment will be in the West End cemetery.

She was born May 18, 1895, in Knobsville, Pa., the daughter of Daniel Edward and Loretta Snyder Fore. She moved to Wytheville in 1918 where she was a member of the Ella Johnston Bible Class at St. Paul United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the church. She was employed as a secretary for the late Rolfe S. Ewald at the S.F. Ewald Insurance Agency. In 1936 she accepted a position at the Wythe County Department of Public Welfare where she was employed until her retirement in 1965.

She was preceded in death by her friend and guardian, Geneva Martin Kincer.

Survivors include five cousins, John R. Fore of Blacksburg, Boyd Fore Jr. of East Brunswick, N.J., Fred B. Fore of Chambersburg, Pa., Carole Edwards of Glastonbury, Conn., and Charles Fore of Jackson, Miss.; and a special friend, Kathleen Ewald of Wytheville.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Feb. 6, from noon until service time at the Grubb Funeral Home.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Hillery M. McAllister

Hillery M. "Mac" McAllister, 71, of Williamsburg, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 1997.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. at the Williamsburg Memorial Park with the Rev. Jim Ivey officiating.

He a native of Wythe County and had lived in Williamsburg area for over 40 years. He was retired from Colonial Williamsburg after 26 years of service. He was also a World War II veteran.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy McAllister; and one son, Danny McAllister.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Bruce Peed of Denbigh; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Bonnie Sawyers, and Martha and Lawrence Corvin, all from Wytheville; two granddaughters and husbands, Vickie and Chris Skutans of Williamsburg, and Tammy and Mike Dunbar of Hampton; and three great-grandchildren, Heather, Ryan, and Courtney.

Memorial donations may be made to the James City County Fire Department, Williamsburg, Virginia.

Ernest Harold Poff

Ernest Harold Poff, 82, of Route 1, Point Pleasant, W.Va., formerly of Wytheville, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 1997 at Pleasant Valley Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 7, at 2 p.m. at the Crow-Hussell Funeral Home, 1701 Jefferson Blvd., Point Pleasant, W.Va., with the Rev. John Casto officiating. Burial will follow in the Kirkland Memorial Gardens, Point Pleasant, W.Va., with Masonic graveside rites.

He was born March 20, 1914, in Wytheville, a son of the late Harvey Ernest and Clara Hounshell Poff. A retired carpenter foreman of construction, he was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church in Pleasant Point, W.Va. He was also a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters in Point Pleasant; the Minturn Lodge No. 19 AF&AM; the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry; and the Benni Kedem Shrine Temple.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Copenhaver Poff of Point Pleasant, W.Va. formerly of Wytheville; two sons and daughter-in-law, Burnis and Mary Ann Poff of Letart, W.Va., and Donald Poff of Arnold, Mo.; a brother and sister-in-law, Vance and Helen Poff of Jamesburg, N.J.; seven sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mozelle Poff, Helen Powers, Frances Hudson, Shirley and Jerry Houseman, all of Wytheville, Hazel and Dick Miller of Arlington, Ethel Capps of Brecksville, Ohio, and Jean Argyle of Morongo Valley, Calif.; and four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Feb. 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Crow-Hussell Funeral Home.

Nina Kate Pratt

Nina Kate Pratt died Saturday, Feb. 1, 1997, at the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 3, at 11 a.m. at the Locust Cove Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Rich Cardor and Rev. Luther Watson officiating. Burial was in the Ridgedale cemetery.

She was the last surviving child of Nellie and James Thomas Buchanan and the widow of Marion Thompson Pratt of Locust Cove. She was a charter member of Locust Cove Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by six children, Marion and Gene Griffin of San Antonio, Texas, Stuart and Dreama Pratt of Rural Retreat, Eleanor and Dick Wassum of Independence, Linda and John DiYorio of Wytheville, Janet Pratt, and Jane and Charlie Clark, all of Rich Valley; 11 grandchildren, Dr. Mac Griffin, Tippy Matherley, James Pratt, Tim Pratt, Todd Pratt, Steven Pratt, Chris DiYorio, Ashley DiYorio, Champ Clark, Will Clark, and Ben Clark; and three great-grandchildren, Chace Griffin, Gabriel DiYorio, and Jamie Matherley.

The D.R. Henderson Funeral Home, Inc. in Saltville was in charge of the arrangements.

Jess Stoots

Jess Stoots, 84, of Ivanhoe, died Friday, Jan. 31, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 3, at 2 p.m. at the Fairview United Methodist Church with the Rev. Taz Reid, Jack King and Bud Stoots officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Hope cemetery.

He was retired from the National Carbide Company.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Victoria Stoots; his wife, Mary Jane Jackson Stoots; two sons, Danny Leon Stoots and Charles Wayne Stoots; and a grandson, Ricky Dalton.

Survivors include seven daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret Ann and Lee Hagy of Kent, Ohio, Shirley Mae and Pedro Walk, Betty Jean and M.H. Brown, Mary Faye and Dicky Sparks, Linda Sue Carter, Brenda Gail and Wayne Dunford, and Rhonda Lynn and Junior Lawson, all of Ivanhoe; three sons and daughters-in-law, Hobart Lee and Audrey Stoots of Mantua, Ohio, Jesse Darrel and Denise Stoots of Ravenna, Ohio, and Robert Mitchell Stoots of Ivanhoe; and 42 grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, eight step-great-grandchildren and one step-great-great-grandchild.

Charles Barnitz Jr.

Charles Barnitz Jr., 90, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 1997, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. at the St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Peter Ouzts officiating. Interment will follow in the East End cemetery. Wytheville Masonic Lodge No. 82 A.F. & A.M. conducted a memorial service Friday, Feb. 7.

He was born Sept. 4, 1906, in Wytheville, the son of Charles Henry Barnitz and Frances Lawrence Pendleton Barnitz. He attended Wytheville public schools; the private school of the Misses Shortt in Wytheville; the Millersburg Military Institute in Millersburg, Ky.; and Virginia Military Institute in Lexington.

He first worked on highway construction with Pendleton Construction Company, Inc. Later he was employed by the City of Wytheville as Town Clerk and Commissioner of Revenue. In 1941, after the Radford Ordnance Works plant was opened for the production of powder for use in World War II, he went to work for the Hercules Powder Plant. He retired from there in 1971.

On Oct. 21, 1930, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Wytheville, he married Florence Mildred Warthen. They celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in 1980, and had been married 58 years when she died on Feb. 6, 1989. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and had served on the vestry. He was a member of the Wytheville Volunteer Fire Department, and was a charter member of the Wythe County Rescue Squad, Inc. He was a member and past master of the Wytheville Masonic Lodge No. 82 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, and past district deputy of District 42. He was past high priest of the Wythe Chapter of Royal Arch Masons No. 51.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte Barnitz and Charles "Chuck" Hoelzel of Elizabeth City, N.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, John Alexander and Kelley Barnitz of Magdelena, N.M., and William Stewart "Bill" Barnitz of Tucson, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and spouses, John Alexander "Jack" Jr. and Colleen Barnitz of Las Cruces, N.M., Richard Franklin "Dick" and Donna Barnitz of Rio Rancho, N.M., William Charles "Bill" Barnitz of Las Cruces, N.M., John Christopher and Martina Barnitz of Rulle, Germany, Michelle Barnitz and Kenneth Pruitt of Tucson, Ariz., Mildred "Milly" Hoelzel and Frank DiCintio of Murrieta, Calif., Charles Thomas "Charlie" and Evelyn Hoelzel of Orlando, Fla.; and 13 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Wythe County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 389, Wytheville, Va. 24382.

Myrtle Dorothy Lundy

Myrtle Dorothy Lundy, 83, of Bastian, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 8, at 11 a.m. at the New Hope Union Church in Suiter with the Evangelist Edmond Paul Estep and Rev. Alan Ashworth officiating. Interment will follow in the Suiter cemetery.

She was the widow of James Edward Lundy, and a daughter of the late Monroe and Mary Ellen Parks. She was a member of the New Hope Union Church in Suiter.

She is survived by two sisters and brother-in-law, Virginia Vaught Hall of Huntington, W.Va., and Mamie and Paul Estep of New Castle, Del.; one brother, Bill Parks of Bastian; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggest that those who prefer may make memorial donations to the Bland County Rescue Squad or the New Hope Union Church.

Venolia Catron Marsh

Venolia Catron Marsh, 88, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 1997, at the Edgemont Center.

Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 7, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. Edward Richardson. Interment was in the Berea Christian Church cemetery.

She was the widow of William T. Marsh and was the daughter of the late William Z. and Flossie Cline Catron.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Rita M. and David "Peanut" Richardson of Wytheville, Elva M. "Bobbie" and Joseph L. McAllister of Salem; one sister, Hallie C. Miller of Crockett; one grandchild, Danny Joe and Paula McAllister of Salem; and one great-grandchild, Daniel J. McAllister.

William David Walk

William David Walk, 52, of Oklawaha, Fla. formerly of Wythe County (Porter's Crossroads Community), died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 1997, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 8, at 11 a.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Earl Hanks officiating. Interment followed in the Odd Fellows cemetery, Ivanhoe.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Alvie C. and Ola G. Waller Walk.

He is survived by six children and spouses, William Joseph and Ann Walk of Vinton, David Carter Walk of Virginia Beach, Keith Edward Walk of Winston-Salem, N.C., Christopher Michael Walk of Virginia Beach, Susan Elaine and Peter Hristov of Vinton, and Michelle Elaine and Brian Peterson of Virginia Beach; six grandchildren; two sisters and brother-in-law, Margie W. and Dean Brown of Route 3, Max Meadows, and Margaret Walk of Route 3, Wytheville; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert Stephen and Mildred J. Walk of Route 3, Wytheville, Samuel Pedro and Shirley M. Walk of Route 1, Ivanhoe, and Harry C. Walk of Oklawaha, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Lead Mines Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 502, Austinville, Va. 24312.

Garland Junior Alley

Garland Junior Alley, 73, of Wytheville, died Friday, Feb. 7, 1997, in the Lewis-Gale Hospital in Salem.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Walter Wood officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.

He was born in Carroll County, a son of the late Thomas and Rosa Alley. He served as Staff Sgt. in World War II and was retired from construction and coalfield mining.

He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Walter "T.W." Alley.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Neese Alley of the Home; three grandchildren, Staci Alley-Ash of Hampton, Victoria, Australia, Capt. Todd C. Alley, Ft. Bragg, N.C., and Cadet Jason C. Alley of Citadel Station, Charleston, S.C.; a daughter-in-law, Fredricka Alley of Clover, S.C.; two sisters, Fannie Hudson of Austinville, and Geneva Poston of Wytheville; one brother, Frank Alley of Austinville; several nieces and nephews; and one special great-nephew, Phillip Arnold Jr.

Euna Lee Gray Lambert Brown

Euna Lee Gray Lambert Brown, 66, of Wytheville, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Long officiating. Interment followed in the Bethany cemetery.

She was born July 8, 1930, in Ivanhoe, a daughter of the late Homer and Sallie Lowe Gray. She was former employee of the Counts Drug Store.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Lambert Jr.

Survivors include her husband, Con Brown of the home; a sister, Mrs. Clyde (Helen) Shiflett of St. Louis, Mo.; three brothers, Clifford Gray of Chesterfield, Frederick Gray, and Allen Gray, both of Roanoke; two stepsons, Carson Brown, and Clinton Martin, both of Wytheville; a granddaughter, Crystal Brown of Wytheville; one niece, Teresa Moore of St. Louis, Mo.; and five nephews, James Pierce Jr. of Roanoke, Billy Shiflett of St. Louis, Mo., Larry Gray of Chesterfield, Dennis Gray of Richmond, and Michael Gray of Roanoke.
