Robert Chitwood Kirby

Robert Chitwood Kirby, 76, of Wytheville, died Monday, March 17, 1997, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 19, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Richard Hall officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 9.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late James E. and Mettie Swims Kirby. He was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie S. Kirby.

Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Lynda Faye and E.B. Padgett of Roanoke, and Barbara Anne Kirby of Woodlawn; two sons, Robert M. Kirby, and Gerald R. Kirby, both of Wytheville; five sisters, Nellie Reynolds of Austinville, Elizabeth Everheart, Dora Ward, both of Pulaski, Laura Hudson of Max Meadows, and Virginia Heights of Roanoke; two brothers, David F. Kirby of Max Meadows, and James C. Kirby of Wytheville; special friends, Doug and Pauline Jackson; and several nieces and nephews.

Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.

William A. Moore

William A. Moore, 73, of Withers Road, Wytheville, died Monday, March 17, 1997, at his home.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, March 19, at 11 a.m. in the East End cemetery conducted by Dr. Michael Wingard.

He was the son of the late Alan L. and Mabel Greaver Moore.

He is survived by his sister, Ann M. Southard of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and a special cousin, Charles O. Moore of Wytheville.

The Grubb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Frances Hale Pickett

Mary Frances Hale Pickett, 69, of Wytheville, died Sunday, March 16, 1997.

Memorial services were held Monday, March 17, at 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Fred Jennings officiating.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late William P. and Bessie Frances Parks Hale. She was a retired respiratory therapist, having been employed at the Wytheville Hospital and the Wythe County Community Hospital. She was a former member of the West End United Methodist Church and Evansham Chapter No. 97, Order of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. Pickett Sr.; and two brothers, Straley Hale and June Hale.

Survivors include three daughters, Theresa Dalton of Hillsville, Shirley Puckett of Rural Retreat, and Kimberly F. Spraker of Wytheville; four sons, James Allen Valko of Lexington, N.C., Frederick R. Pickett Jr. of Greensboro, N.C., Gary Edward Pickett of Richmond, and David W. Pickett of Gloucester; a foster daughter, Gail Pickett of Richmond; one sister, Louise Brinson of Norfolk; one brother, Graham Hale of Sugar Grove; and 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the American Diabetes Association, Virginia Affiliate, Inc., 1290 Seminole Trail, Suite 2, Charlottesville, Va. 22901.

Thomas Barclay Allison Jr.

Thomas Barclay Allison Jr., 63, of Wytheville died Monday, March 17, 1997, in the VA Medical Center in Salem.

Graveside memorial services will be held Saturday, March 22, at 1 p.m. at West End cemetery in Wytheville with the Rev. Dr. Thomas Sproule officiating.

He was a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He also was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member of Rotary International, the Wytheville Iron Boots Society, the Jaycees and the Wytheville Golf Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Barclay Allison Sr. and Corinne Sexton Allison.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, William Barclay and Robin Gibson Allison of Roanoke; one daughter, Suzanne Elizabeth Allison of Roanoke; one grandson, Benjamin Graham Allison of Roanoke; and four sisters, Elizabeth Allison Mallory of Manassas, Corinne Allison Johnson of Alexandria, Julia Allison Walters and Frances Allison Emerson, both of Wytheville.

The family suggests those who prefer may make donations to the Wytheville Rock House Museum, 150 Monroe Street, Wytheville, Va. 24382.

Mary Elizabeth Taylor Bourne

Mary Elizabeth Taylor Bourne, 77, of Wytheville died Wednesday, March 19, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 23, at 2 p.m. at the Franklin Street United Methodist Church in Wytheville. Interment will follow in the Oakwood cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service.

She was born in Wytheville, the daughter of the late John Henry Taylor and Hannah Mae Foultz Taylor Johnson. She was a member of the Franklin Street United Methodist Church where she was the former secretary of the United Methodist Women and membership chairman and unit leader.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Lee Bourne.

Survivors include two daughters, Annie L. Taylor and Cora Lee Green, both of Wytheville; a brother, James Taylor of Ashtabula, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Kathryn "Libby" Taylor, Donald "Buster" Taylor, Joseph Allen Taylor, Phillip Odell Taylor, Robert Green IV, James William Green, John Edward Green, David Andrew Green and Allen Dwayne Green; six great-grandchildren; a special niece Edna Phillips; and several other nieces, nephews and friends.

The family will receive friends Saturday, March 22, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Barnett Funeral Home or any time at the residence of her daughters.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Franklin Street United Methodist Church Building Fund.

J.P. Gravley

J.P. Gravley, 62, of Route 3, Max Meadows died Tuesday, March 18, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 21, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Don Scott officiating. Interment was in the West End cemetery. Graveside military rites were conducted by American Legion Post No. 9.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jesse J. Gravley.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy S. Gravley of Route 3, Max Meadows; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Connie Gravley of Max Meadows; a granddaughter, Ashley E. Gravley; his mother, Girlie V. Gravley of Wytheville; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Georgie and Bill Farris of Max Meadows and Judy and Burley Dalton of Draper; a brother and sister-in-law, Clyde and Shelva Gravley of Max Meadows; and several nieces and nephews.

Annie Millirons Hancock

Annie Millirons Hancock, 92, of Wytheville died Wednesday, March 19, 1997, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be Saturday, March 22, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. Lawrence Nuckolls. Interment will be in the Family cemetery, Little Creek.

She was born in Bland County and was the daughter of the late R. Lee and Annie King Millirons.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel R. Hancock.

Survivors include a daughter, Naomi H. Nuckolls of Pulaski; two sons, James Lewis Hancock of Rock Hill, S.C., and Larry M. Hancock of Pulaski.; two brothers, Robert Millirons of Bland, and J.D. Millirons of Waynesboro; and seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Millirons Memorial Society Education Fund.

Dallas Gleaves Eversole

Dallas Gleaves Eversole, 89, of Route 2, Max Meadows, the Fort Chiswell Community, died Saturday, March 22, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 25, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Fogus, Rev. Larry Barnes, Rev. Abe Handy, and Rev. Granberry officiating. Entombment followed in the Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Dublin.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Albert and Myrtle Akers Eversole. He began his career as operator of the Ferry at Austinville and was owner and operator of Eversole Drilling Company Inc. for more than 30 years. He was a life member of the Austinville Assembly of God Church where he served as honorary trustee.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hallie Burnett Eversole.

Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Lois and Walt Whisman of Edison, N.J., Irene and Jack Mobellini of Wytheville, Evelyn Eversole of Route 2, Max Meadows, and Carolyn and Joe Arnold of Houston, Texas; four sons and daughters-in-law, Owen G. and Dorothy J. Eversole of Route 2, Max Meadows, Randolph and Donna Eversole of Route 3, Max Meadows, Rev. Willard and Earlene Eversole, and Dewey G. Eversole, all of Route 2, Max Meadows; two sisters, Ruth A. Eversole of Austinville, and Jewett Catron of Wytheville; three brothers, Clifford Q. Eversole of Austinville, Brown D. Eversole of Wytheville, and David W. Eversole of Max Meadows; and 16 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Clara Lindsey Steele

Clara Lindsey Steele, 79, of Knoxville Tenn. died Friday, March 21, 1997, in Ft. Sanders Parkwest Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 24, at 10 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church in Knoxville, Tenn., with the Rev. David Bradford officiating. Graveside services were held Monday at 4 p.m. at the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat with the Rev. Larry M. Bollinger officiating.

She was born in Rural Retreat, a daughter of the late Martin Luther Sr. and Maggie Hackler Lindsey. She was a charter member of Messiah Lutheran Church, a member of Ossoli and had been an American Red Cross volunteer.

She is survived by her husband, Samuel W. Steele; a son and daughter-in-law, Samuel L. and Susan G. Steele of Fairfax; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Trevor Venus of Coventry, England; five grandchildren, Caroline Steele, Lindsey Steel, Rachel Steele, all of Williamsburg, Alison Brack and Jim Brack of Coventry, England; a brother, James C. Lindsey of Rural Retreat; a sister, Evelyn Buck of Grayson, Ky.; and many special nieces, nephews and friends.

Lindsey Funeral Home in Rural Retreat was in charge of the local arrangements.

Foy Aust

Foy Aust, 87, of Draper died Wednesday, March 26, 1997, in the Pulaski Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 30, at 3 p.m. from the Trinity Lutheran Church, Pulaski, with the Rev. Terrie L. Sternberg officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakwood cemetery.

He was the son of the late William Norman Aust and Lucy Southern Aust. A graduate of Pulaski High School, he attended College of William and Mary and graduated from Radford State Teacher College. He served as assistant principal, and as a teacher at Pulaski High School for 16 years. He was also a real estate broker and developer in Pulaski County for more than 40 years. As a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for over 60 years, he served on numerous church committees. He was the founder of the Pulaski Boy's Club which he operated for nine years, a charter member of the Pulaski Lion's Club, a long time member of the Pulaski Elk's Lodge and served on the advisory board of the Pulaski Salvation Army.

He was preceded in death in death by his 11 brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his wife of more than 60 years, Mildred Brockmeyer Aust of Draper; a son and daughter-in-law, Milton N. and Brenda B. Aust of Draper, and Myron R. and Dianne H. Aust of Pulaski; a daughter, Melanie M. Aust of Draper; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, March 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Stevens Funeral Home in Pulaski.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Trinity Lutheran Church, Pulaski, or to the Pulaski Salvation Army.

Richard Mahlon Bell

Richard Mahlon Bell, 61, of Asheville, N.C., and formerly of Austinville, died Tuesday, march 27, 1997, at his home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 29, at 10 a.m. in the Grace Episcopal Church, Asheville, N.C. conducted by the Rev. Father William Edwards and the Rev. Jane Smith.

A native of Austinville and was a son of the late Roy Glenn and Rose Rhudy Bell. He obtained a bachelors degree from Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn., attended the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Columbia, S.C. and received a masters degree in history from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He was a retired school teacher and a college professor and the inventor of the Calendrical System. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church.

He is survived by his wife, Annette Woody Bell of the home; two sons, Thad Bell of Raleigh, N.C., and Nicholas Richard Bell of Marshall, N.C.; and two brothers, David Randolph Bell of Dallas, Texas, and Roy Rhudy Bell of Tampa, Fla.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, 871 Merrimon Ave., Asheville, N.C. 28804, or to the American Cancer Society, 31 College Place Building C. Suite 100, Asheville, N.C. 28801.
