VESSELS
Retired U.S. Army Lt. Colonel Lee Vessels of Aylett, Va., departed this life on April 2, 2002 at the age of 77. A native of King William County, Va., he was born on February 28, 1925, the son of Ida Gwathmey Vessels and the late Robert L. Vessels. He married Evelyn Mae Jones in 1948. In 1950 he was graduated from Virginia State University and received his Army commission. He served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. During his highly decorated military career he received many honors and medals. Upon his retirement from active duty in 1968, he became Commandant of Cadets of the John F. Kennedy High School JROTC, where he taught and mentored for 20 years. In 1996 he was inducted into the Virginia State University ROTC Hall of Fame. One of his finest achievements was the establishment of VFW Post 9501 and its Veterans Memorial Monument. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted family, his wife of 54 years, Evelyn Jones Vessels of Aylett; and his three children and their families, his daughter, Yolanda V. Madden and her children, Capt. Willis Madden Jr., Claire Madden and Lt. Camille Blackman; his son, Jerone Lee Vessels; his devoted daughter-in-law, Reginia and their children, Janeen, Alex and Andrew; his daughter, Yvonne Vessels-Hagen; and his devoted son-in-law, Ron. He was predeceased by his son, Rodney in 1976. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Willis III, Sam, Adriel, Xan, Brittney and Tony. Lee is survived as well by his mother, Ida Vessels; sister, Clementine Johnson; and brothers, Wellington, Mackes, Robert and Tyrone Vessels; sisters-in-law, Lou, Rosa, Patrice, Cheryl and Ann Vessels, Dorothy Smith, Grace Bratcher; and brothers-in-law, Harry Smith, Willie Bratcher and Eugene Jones; and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, family and friends across the nation and throughout the world. A funeral service and interment will be conducted at St. Paul Baptist Church, Globe Road in King William, Va. at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2002. The family will receive friends at the H.W. Dabney Funeral Home, 518 N. Washington Highway in Ashland, Va. from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 5, 2002. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lee Vessels VFW Scholarship Fund.

WATTS
Meredith H. Watts, age 85, of Sandston, Va., died March 31, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; his son, James M. Watts and his wife, Jean of New Kent, Va.; his son, Robert W. Watts of Richmond, Va.; a brother, Elbert Watts; and sister, Jane Hamby, both of Atlanta, Ga. A good father, friend and teacher, Mr. Watts was a native of Bridgeport, Ky., a naval aviation instructor during World War II and a 40-year career pilot for Reynolds Metals Co. He began his aviation career after graduating from Georgetown College (1938) where he attended the Civilian Pilot Training program. The family will receive friends at Sandston Presbyterian Church on Friday, April 5 from 4 to 7 p.m. with a memorial service to follow on Sunday, April 7 at 2 p.m. at the same church. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Sandston Presbyterian Church, 13 N. Confederate Ave., Sandston, Va. 23150.

WHITAKER
Eunice Seal Whitaker, 76, of Sparta died Tuesday, April 2, 2002 at her home. Born in Caroline County, she had retired as an accounts specialist with Rappahannock Electric Co-op after 30 years. She was a lifetime member of Salem Baptist church. She was the widow of George Hinton Whitaker and the mother of the late Gary Lane Whitaker. Survivors include a sister, Lois S. Taylor of Sparta; a great nephew, who made his home with her, David Taylor; a granddaughter, Rhonda Reed of Fairfax; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, April 5, 2002 in the chapel of Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, with Rev. Kevin James officiating. Burial will follow in Salem Baptist Church Cemetery, Sparta. The family will receive friends, 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. WILLHOFT
Betty Jane Willhoft, 78, of Highland Springs, died Tuesday, April 2, 2002. She was the widow of William Willhoft and is survived by two sons, Harley (Sonny) and Harry Pearson; one sister and one brother, six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where funeral services will be held 7 p.m. Friday. Interment Roselawn Cemetery in Illinois.

WILLIAMS
Leonard Edward Williams Sr., age 95, of Unionville, Va., died March 31, 2002. Mr. Williams was a native of Roanoke, Va., where he received his early education. He earned a B.S. degree in education from Lincoln University and a master of education degree from Atlanta University. He did advanced studies at the University of Virginia. Mr. Williams was a retired teacher and administrator from the Orange County School System, with over 50 years of experience in public education in Virginia. This teaching experience not only encompassed Orange County but included Farmville, Roanoke and Prince Edward County. Not only was he an esteemed educator, but his loyalty was also noteworthy in serving his country. He was a veteran of World War II, where his tour of duty took him to France, and he earned the rank of Master Sergeant. He was a member of C.S. Bassett Lodge No. 266 in Orange, Va. and was actively involved in the Democratic Party and community affairs. He is survived by his wife, Victoria Terrell Williams of Unionville; sons, Leonard E. Williams Jr. of Richmond and Morton T. Williams of Unionville; daughter, Jacqueline M. Barber of Chicago, Ill.; sister-in-law, Marie Williams of Roanoke; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Visitation at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Orange, Va., on Friday, April 5 from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. Pastor Rippert Roberts will officiate and Rev. Yancy Warren will serve as eulogist. Interment church cemetery. Satchell's Funeral Services, Inc., Orange, Va., assisting the family.

ANDERSON
Edwin A. "Andy" Anderson, 77, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 4, 2002. He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Maxine S. Anderson; daughter and son-in-law, Pamela A. and Robert White of Richmond; sisters, Hope Anderson of Mt. Airy, N.C. and Thelma Burge of Windsor, Va.; grandchildren, Katherine Elizabeth "Katie" and Matthew Robert White. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10). His funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Dale Memorial Park. CARTER
Floyd Douglas Carter, 75, of Dunnsville, died Sunday, March 3, 2002 in a Richmond hospital. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, a P.O.W. and a member of the DAV. He is survived by two children, Misty L. Carter of Village and Douglas Floyd Carter of Dunnsville; one brother, Robert Stanley Carter of Dunbrooke; and one sister, Clara "Woman" Skelton of Baltimore, Md. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 6 at 2 p.m. in the Warsaw Church of God. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening at the Marks-Bristow Funeral Home, Tappahannock.

COLEMAN
Mrs. Lillian Coleman of Richmond departed this life Friday, March 1, 2002. She is survived by her sons, Willis P. Coleman and William H. Coleman; daughter-in-law, Natalie Turner; devoted cousins, Florence Scott and Florence Maroney; nieces and nephews, including, Franklin E. Moore, Sidney Moore, Howard Moore Jr., Samuel Moore, Frances Ellis and Terry Simpson; other relatives and cherished special friends. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Streets, where the family will receive friends Tuesday, March 5, 7 to 8 p.m., and where funeral services will be held Wednesday, 12 noon. Juanita Body Clarkson Cundiff, age 84, of Richmond, widow of Talbert Norvill Clarkson and Roy Thomas Cundiff, passed away Sunday, March 3, 2002. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Henry Body and Emma Mae Hill Body; and two brothers, William Earl Body and Richard Sherman Body. She is survived by her daughter, Donna C. Odom and her husband, Fitzhugh Lee Odom Jr.; two granddaughters, Mary Odom Smith and Clare Odom Frayer and her husband, Matthew Michael Frayer; three great-grandchildren, Keith Trent DeWell, Catherine McKenzie Smith and Madison Nicole Frayer, all of Richmond; four sisters, Pauline June Dove of Churchville, Va., Betty Body Smith, Trina Ramzinsky, both of Roanoke, Virginia and Nancy B. Schlosser of Tucson, Ariz.; three brothers, Dennis Watson Body, Vernon Ward Body and James Edward Body, all of Roanoke, Va.; also numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Cundiff was born in Roanoke County, Va. and was a member of Colonial Place Christian Church. She worked for MCV Hospitals. Remains rest at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday. Garnett Kemp Dinwiddie, 74, of Hallieford, passed away on Monday, March 4, 2002. She was a member of Locust Grove United Methodist Church, Dutton, and had retired from Riverside Convalescent Center, Mathews, as the administration assistant. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eddie and Susie Kemp; and her sister, Edna Daniels. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Alex Dinwiddie; two daughters, Lori D. Bannon and husband, Mike of Midlothian, Valeria D. Thomas and husband, Robert of Mathews; son, E. Norman Dinwiddie and wife, Carolyn of Richmond; two sisters, Lena Tyree of Williamsburg, Gloria Bibb of Camp Hill, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Leslie Thomas, Lindsay Thomas, Lauren Thomas, Leah Thomas, Michael Bannon, Allison Manning, Anna Hatfield; great-granddaughter, Virginia Manning. The family will receive friends at Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews on Tuesday, March 5, 2002 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. in Locust Grove United Methodist Church, Dutton, on Wednesday, March 6, 2002 with burial to follow in Locust Grove Cemetery. DOHERTY
William Joseph (Bill) Doherty Jr., 65, born in Richmond, Va., died at his home in Laguna Niguel, Calif. February 26, 2002. At his side were his wife, Sonia; son, Daniel; and daughter, Doreen. He also left three brothers, Robert Erskine and John Cary Doherty of Arlington and James Daniel Doherty-Glenn of Mechanicsville. Mr. Doherty was a former employee of Virginia Transit Co. in the mechanic's shop. He was buried in the Riverside National Cemetery on March 5, 2002, Riverside, Calif.

FARRAR
Nellie Parker Farrar, 93, of the Masonic Home, widow of George C. Farrar Sr., died Monday, March 4, 2002. She is survived by three daughters, Mary F. Wright of Mechaniscville, Nellie F. Tye of Mechanicsville and Barbara F. Wilkinson of Key West, Fla.; one son, George C. Farrar Jr. of Mechanicsville; one sister, Virginia K. Graham; one brother, Leonard Q. Kidd; 18 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Farrar was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church and a member of the Eastern Star. FIX
Viola Jane Yeatts Fix, 69, of Victoria, Va., died March 4, 2002. She is survived by two daughters, Donna and husband, Mike Snow of Victoria and Sherry Berkheimer and husband, Bruce of Chesterfield; two sons, Steve Fix and wife, Janet of Victoria and Bruce Fix of Texas; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Lula Hite; and brother, Joe Yeatts. She was a former employee of Lea Industries and the Victoria Public Library. The family will receive friends Tuesday (tonight), March 5 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Staples Funeral Home, Victoria, where funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 6 at 2 p.m. Interment will be at Kenbridge Heights Cemetery.
