William Melton Peake

William Melton "Mull" Peake, 80, of Pulaski, Va., formerly of Wythe County, Va., died Friday, May 10, 2002, in the Columbia Pulaski Community Hospital, Pulaski, Va.

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 13, at 2 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel, Austinville, Va., with the Rev. Richard Walls officiating.

He was born in Wythe County, Va., a son of the late Jasper and Mandy Davis Peake. He attended the Church of God.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Magdaline Hardy Peake; one son, William Lee Peake; two grandsons, Wayne Smith and Marvin Dwayne Banes; and one granddaughter, Susie Massie.

Survivors include eight daughters and sons-in-law, Effie Mae Banes of Wytheville, Va., Bonnie Stone of Draper, Va., Deanna and Jewel Pauley of Galax, Va., Helen and Buford Corvin of Crockett, Va., Betty Davidson of Cripple Creek, Va., Wanda and Starling Jennings of Speedwell, Va., Linda and Roy Wingfield of Rural Retreat, Va., and Brenda and Junior Stone of Austinville, Va.; son, Harry Peake of Speedwell, Va.; a brother, Harry Peake of Virginia Beach, Va.; a longtime companion, Lucy Massie of Pulaski, Va.; 28 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren, several stepgrandchildren, great-stepgrandchildren, great-great-stepgrandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Gaelen Belize Wood

Gaelen Belize Wood, 16, of Pulaski, Va., died Saturday, May 25, 2002.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 29, at 3 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Third Street and Jefferson Street, Pulaski, Va., with the Rev. William Randall Frye officiating. Interment will follow in Oakwood cemetery, Pulaski, Va.

She was born April 12, 1986, in Charlottesville, Va., and was christened at Christ Episcopal Church. She was an 11th grade student at Pulaski County High School and the Southwest Virginia Governor's School of Math and Science where she was in the top 10 percent of her class. On May 9, she was inducted into the National Honor Society. She was active in clubs and school organizations. She was vice-president of the student body; a member of the drama club, the jazz chorus, the swim team, and was a cheerleader. During her middle school years, she was a volunteer to underprivileged children and last summer and in this school year was a volunteer in the Pulaski Hospital Oncology ward.

She is survived by her parents, Catherine Douglas Morris Wood of Pulaski, Va., and David Clotaire Wood of Draper, Va.; two sisters, Sophie Wood and Aja Wood of Pulaski, Va.; maternal grandparents, David and Douglas L. Morris of Charlottesville, Va.; and paternal grandparents, Clotaire and Florence Wood of Arlington, Va.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Drama Club at Pulaski High School, Cougar Road, Dublin, VA 24084.

Clarence W. Brown

Clarence W. Brown, 78, of Elk Creek, died Friday, April 18, 1997, at his residence.

Funeral services were held Sunday, April 20, at 2:30 p.m. in Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel in Independence. Interment was in Lebanon cemetery, Elk Creek, with Rick Eminhizer officiating.

He was born Oct. 31, 1918, at Elk Creek, a son of Jim Brown and Nancy Hale.

He is survived by his wife, Vurla Roberts Brown of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patsy and Andy Sokol of Max Meadows, and Nancy and Joey Musser of Galax; two sons and daughters-in-law, Junior and Nancy Brown, and Richard and Brenda Brown, all of Elk Creek; one sister, Anna Osborne of Elk Creek; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Con Brown, Fred and Lee Brown, and Lonnie Brown, all of Wytheville; and six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to Elk Creek Valley Volunteer Fire Department, or to the Elk Creek Rescue Squad.

Ethel Margaret Reynolds Crockett

Ethel Margaret Reynolds Crockett, 87, of Route 1, Max Meadows, died Saturday, April 19, 1997, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 22, at 2 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Randy Morris officiating. Interment followed in the Sanders cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Ewell B. Sr. and Maude Coleman Reynolds. She was a member of the Brick United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Drake Crockett; and a son, Eugene Leo Crockett.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Louise and Hubert Surratt of Route 2, Max Meadows; three sons and daughters-in-law, Cecil D. Jr. and Aline Crockett of Salem, Donald H. Sr. and Mary Crockett of Route 2, Wytheville, and Stephen S. "Sandy" and Joyce Crockett of Route 1, Max Meadows; 16 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Rachel Cline, Kathryn Thompson, both of Wytheville, and Dorothy Richenbacher of Manheim, Pa.; and two brothers, Eldridge Reynolds of Austinville, and Billy Reynolds of Max Meadows.

Franklin Pretlow Strough

Franklin Pretlow Strough, 54, of Route 4, Wytheville, died Monday, April 21, 1997, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 24, at 10 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, Wytheville, with Pastor Peter Ouzts officiating. Graveside services will be Thursday, April 24, at 4 p.m. at the Cedarwood cemetery in Edinburg with Father John F. Glovier officiating.

He was born in Harrisonburg and received a B.S. degree in health education at Madison College. He was a representative of the Tuberculosis Association and a representative of the American Cancer Society. He was a former employee of Levere Business Products and manager of Better Homes Furniture. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church; a member of the Wytheville Independent Order of Odd Fellows; and a member of Briar Patch Amateur Radio Club with call letters KK4EJ.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Thompson Strough of the home; two daughters, Lisa Marie Strough of Christiansburg, and Rebecca Lynn Strough of Radford; his parents, Carl F. and Mary Llewellyn Strough of Harrisonburg; and a sister and brother-in-law, Llewellyn S. and J. Ronald Allison of Onancock.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Logan Room at St. John's Episcopal Church.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Wytheville Community College Education Fund in memory of Franklin Pretlow Strough.

Robert Sampson Cregger

Robert Sampson "Bobby" Cregger, 58, of Route 1, Max Meadows, the East Piney Community, died Thursday, April 24, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 27, at 3 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Riggins and the Rev. Randy Morris officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery. American Legion Post No. 9 will conduct graveside military rites.

He was a correctional officer for the state of Virginia and served in the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his father, Samuel S. Cregger.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Riggins Cregger of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela and Gary Doss of Max Meadows, and Lisa and Steve Shoemake of Hattiesburg, Miss.; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert Franklin and Crystal Cregger of Dublin; two grandchildren, Elisha Doss, and Adam Shoemake; his mother, Kathryn Doss Cregger of Max Meadows; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Claude "Sonny" and Jeanette Cregger of Morrilton, Ark., and David and Helen Cregger of Max Meadows; his father- and mother-in-law, Cecil and Annie Riggins of Route 1, Max Meadows; and a special niece, Carlina Neco.

The family will receive friends Saturday, April 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home or at the residence at any time.

Frederick Douglas Jackson

Frederick Douglas "Doug" Jackson, 78, of Route 2, Wytheville, Peppers Ferry Road, died Wednesday, April 23, 1997, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 26, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Richard Lindamood officiating. Interment will follow in the Jackson Family cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Frederick T. and Cora Taylor Jackson. He was a member of the Max Meadows United Methodist Church and was retired from West Grove Knitting Mill in West Grove, Pa.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Gleaves Jackson, and Versal T. Jackson.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline Ogle Jackson of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and David Sampson of Hartsville, S.C., and Barbara and Ronald Detwiler of West Grove, Pa.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Carol Jackson of Maggie Valley, N.C., and Allen and Linda Jackson of Kirkwood, Pa.; two sisters and brother-in-law, Alma J. and David K. Collins, and Mildred J. Dobbins, all of Route 2, Wytheville; a sister-in-law, Zerline Jackson of Austinville; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and special friends, Harry and Bertha Wiles of Route 2, Wytheville.

Donald Siler Crawford

Donald Siler Crawford, 87, of Palm Coast, Fla., formerly of Wytheville, Va., died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at his home in Florida.

He was born in Marion, Va. He was a retired major in the U.S. Army having served in World War II and the Korean War. He had made his home in Florida since 1980.

He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Dorothy Crawford of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Candy and Jim Southern of Maneo, N.C.; a son, Donald Stuart Crawford of Williamsburg, Va.; and three grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Camp Lurecrest Foundation, Micah Crawford, Southern Scholarship Fund, c/o Rich McCulloch, 1235 Lexington Ave., Charlotte, NC 28203.

Hallie Virginia Littreal Landreth

Hallie Virginia Littreal Landreth, 90, formerly of Cripple Creek, Va., died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, in Edgemont Center, Wytheville, Va., after a long battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 24, at 2 p.m. in the Church of God of Prophecy in Cripple Creek, Va., with Pastor Sonny Ayers, Pastor Cecil Frazier and Geary Jonas officiating. Interment will be in the Littreal Family cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Robert "Joe Bob" Landreth; her parents, Bayse and Edith Kirby Littreal; three sisters, Ethel Crockett, Louise Crockett and Ruby Jonas.

Survivors include seven daughters and sons-in-law, Jo Ann Irvin of Winston-Salem, N.C., Jean Widner of Wytheville, Va., Carrie and Rodney Catron of Virginia Beach, Va., Nancy and Robert "Buddy" Akers of Fries, Va., Susan and Larry Shupe of Wytheville, Va., Bobbie Landreth and Robert Dirks of Wytheville, Va., and Debbie and Nelson Dunford of Rural Retreat, Va.; four sisters, Mary Mills, Becky Moore and Rachel Crockett, all of Cripple Creek, Va., and Clarice Sullivan of Fries, Va.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Doris Littreal, and Ralph and Leafa Littreal, all of Cripple Creek, Va.; 14 grandchildren and their spouses, Donna and Bobby Hilton of Mocksville, N.C., Roger Irvin of Rural Hall, N.C., Kathy and Marc Flowers of Advance, N.C., Sharon Jean and Steve Burcham of Wytheville, Va., Teresa and Cliff Peters of Great Bridge, Va., Tammy and Charlie Joyce of Galax, Va., Robert Akers Jr., Joseph L. Judy Riggins Monroe, 47, of Danville, Va., formerly of Carroll County, Va., died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, in the Danville Regional Medical Center, Danville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 24, at 2 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel in Danville, Va., with the Rev. Mark Moore officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

She was preceded in death by her father, Malcolm Harry Riggins; and two nephews.

Survivors include her husband of 29 years, George Monroe Jr. of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy M. and George Trent of Danville, Va.; her mother, Alma Phillips Riggins; a sister and brother-in-law, Denise and James Hillenburg of Wythe County, Va.; six brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Janet Phillips of Franklin, Va., Malcolm Riggins, Roy and Anita Riggins, Mike and Cindy Riggins, Randall and Tammy Riggins, all of Carroll County, Va., and Terry and Linda Riggins of Suffolk, Va.; and five grandchildren.

Hallie T. Neel, 93, of Ceres died Tuesday, April 24, in Birdmont Health Care Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert S. Neel; and a stepdaughter, Maxie.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Elmer Stuart of Ceres; one sister, Mrs. Howe Farmer Jr. of Dublin; two stepdaughters, Shirley Repass of Wytheville, and Trula Lambert of Ceres; one stepson, Garland Neel of Ceres; and two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, 10 step-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Carlie William Pearman Sr., 74, of Route 1, Ivanhoe, the Cold Ridge Community, died Thursday, April 24, 1997, in the Twin County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 27, at 2 p.m. at the Mt. Hope United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joe Arnold and the Rev. Taz Reid officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Hope cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

He was born in Carroll County, a son of the late James Asbury and Rosa Ellen Cox Pearman and was a member of the Mt. Hope United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys Marie Pearman of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Hazel and Roy Bowman of Bristow, and Daisy and Jim Lambert of Fries; three sons and daughters-in-law, Carlie and Anita Pearman Jr., Wilbur Ray and Sandy Pearman, all of Ivanhoe, and Roy Lee and Michelle Pearman of Linden; two sisters, Gladys Barker of Ivanhoe, and Charlotte Patton of Malin Nursing Home, Wytheville; three brothers, Garnett Pearman of Ivanhoe, Thornton Pearman of Fries, and Glen Pearman of Greensboro, N.C.; and 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
